प्रहलाद पठाए पड़न साल ॥

Prahlaad was sent to school

संगि सखा बहु लीए बाल 

He took many of his friends along with him

मो कउ कहा पड़्हावसि आल जाल

He asked his teacher, "Why do you teach me about worldly affairs?

मेरी पटीआ लिखि देहु स्री गोपाल

Write the Name of the Dear Lord on my tablet

नही छोडउ रे बाबा राम नाम ॥

O Baba, I will not forsake the Name of the Lord.

मेरो अउर पड़्हन सिउ नही कामु ॥१॥

I will not bother with any other lessons

संडै मरकै कहिओ जाइ ॥

Sanda and Marka went to the king to complain

प्रहलाद बुलाए बेगि धाइ ॥

He sent for Prahlaad to come at once

तू राम कहन की छोडु बानि ॥

He said to him, "Stop uttering the Lord's Name

तुझु तुरतु छडाऊ मेरो कहिओ मानि ॥२॥

I shall release you at once, if you obey my words

मो कउ कहा सतावहु बार बार ॥

Prahlaad answered, "Why do you annoy me, over and over again?

प्रभि जल थल गिरि कीए पहार ॥

God created the water, land, hills and mountains.

इकु रामु न छोडउ गुरहि गारि ॥

I shall not forsake the One Lord Rama; if I did, I would be going against my Guru.

मो कउ घालि जारि भावै मारि डारि ॥३॥

You might as well throw me into the fire and kill me

काढि खड़गु कोपिओ रिसाइ ॥

The king became angry and drew his sword

तुझ राखनहारो मोहि बताइ ॥

Show me your protector now!

प्रभ थ्मभ ते निकसे कै बिसथार ॥

So God emerged out of the pillar, and assumed a mighty form

हरनाखसु छेदिओ नख बिदार ॥४॥

He killed Harnaakhash, tearing him apart with his nails

ओइ परम पुरख देवाधि देव ॥

The Supreme Lord God, the Divinity of the divine,

भगति हेति नरसिंघ भेव ॥

For the sake of His devotee, assumed the form of the man-lion.

कहि कबीर को लखै न पार ॥

Says Kabeer, no one can know the Lord's limits

प्रहलाद उधारे अनिक बार ॥५॥४॥

Meditation

Sant Kabir

 

O Brother, sing the praises of Lord’s Name Rama, Govind, Hari. The effort does not require japa (religious recitations), tapa (austerities) and Sadhana (strenuous religious practices) or the like, nor does it involve any expense. But because of desire for progeny, wealth and pleasures and forgetting God, often lead one astray.

 

Kabir says: He on whose lips the Name of God is not there that mouth is a litter bin.

 

भजो रे भैया राम गोविंद हरी ।

जप तप साधन कछु नहिं लागत, खरचत नहिं गठरी ॥

संतत संपत सुख के कारन, जासे भूल परी ॥

कहत कबीर राम नहीं जा मुख, ता मुख धूल भरी ॥

Sant Kabir

 

Without the Master, who can show the path? The way is terribly difficult. Doubt crosses the path like rivers gliding through mountainous regions and there is egotism like big boulders in the rivers. There are passion and anger too like two huge mountains on either side; ambition dogs the footsteps like a thief. And pride and vanity descend like rain from overhanging clouds; self-deception violently tosses one like the winds.

 

Kabir says: Listen O ye good men, how can one traverse the path (without a Master as guide)?

 

गुरु बिन कौन बतावे वाट बडा विकट यम घाट

भ्रांती की पहाडी, नदिया बिचमें अहंकारकी नाड 

काम क्रोध दो पर्बत  लोभ चोर संघार बडा विकट यम घाट

Swamiji, though you preach that constant chanting of Lord's name is the only way for liberation at modern times, you also give lectures about other paths like Athma Vichara, Raja yoga and Meditation. Which path do you follow?

Without a farmer, the land is not planted;

Without a thread, how can the beads be strung?

Without a loop, how can the knot be tied?

Just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. 

 

Without a mother or father there is no child;

Without water, how can the clothes be washed?

Without a horse, how can there be a rider?

Without the Holy Saint, one cannot reach the Court of the Lord.

Sant Kabir

 

Twelve years pass in childhood, and for another twenty years, he does not practice self-discipline and austerity.

 

For another thirty years, he does not worship God in any way, and then, when he is old, he repents and regrets.

 

His life wastes away as he cries out, "Mine, mine!"

 

The pool of his power has dried up.

 

He makes a dam around the dried-up pool, and with his hands, he makes a fence around the harvested field.

 

When the thief of Death comes, he quickly carries away what the fool had tried to preserve as his own.

 

His feet and head and hands begin to tremble, and the tears flow copiously from his eyes.

 

His tongue has not spoken the correct words, but now, he hopes to practice religion!

 

If the Dear Lord shows His Mercy, one enshrines love for Him, and obtains the Divine Lord's Name “Hari”.

 

By Guru's Grace, he receives the wealth of the Lord's Name “Hari”, which alone shall go with him, when he departs in the end.

 

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints – he shall not take any other wealth with him.

The Nirguna School of Brahmavadis, of which Kabir and the succeeding saint-poets were the chief exponents, regarded the Name and its Japa to be of immense value. They had a child like faith in the infinite glory of the Name.

 

Doha of Dadu Dayal (1544 – 1603) {who was an illustrious follower of Kabir and a great devotee}:

 

The Universal Spirit is like a thread in a rosary which pervades all animate and inanimate creation and revolves through all forms (representing various beads in the rosary) is a fitting aid to this Japa.

 

It is such a Japa that Dada refers to in the following lines:

 

“दादू माला सब आकारकी;

कोई साधू सुमिरै राम“

 

“The various forms (in this Universe) are the beads of the rosary;

Only can a Sadhu (Saint) remember Rama”

The dumb cannot explain the taste of the sugar he tastes. Likewise the one who is immersed in the Divine bliss will not be able to explain the eternal happiness being experienced.

 

Sri Sri Muralidharaswamji says;

 

The benefits of chanting the Divine Name and the taste one could experience out of it cannot be explained in words.

 

Rather than speak at length about the greatness of the divine name, prove it by chanting.

Rivers do not drink their own water, nor do trees eat their own fruit, nor do rain clouds eat the grains reared by them. The wealth of the noble is used solely for the benefit of others. Even after accepting that giving is good and that one must learn to give, several questions need to be answered.
When should one give?
We all know the famous incident from Mahabharat. Yudhisthir, asks a beggar seeking alms to come the next day. On this, Bhim rejoices, that Yudhisthir his brother, has conquered death! For he is sure that he will be around tomorrow to give. Yudhisthir gets the message. One does not know really whether one will be there tomorrow to give! The time to give therefore is Now!!
How much to give?
One recalls the famous incident from history. Rana Pratap was reeling after defeat in a war. He had lost his army, he had lost his wealth, and most importantly he had lost hope, his will to fight. At that time in his darkest hour, his erstwhile minister Bhamasha came seeking him and placed his entire fortune at the disposal of Rana Pratap. With this, Rana Pratap raised an army and lived to fight another day.
How much to give?
The answer is “Give as much as you can!”
What to give?
It is not only money that can be given. It could be a flower,your time,knowledge or even a smile. It is not how much one gives but how one gives that really matters. When you give a smile to a stranger, that may be the only good thing received by him in days and weeks! “You can give anything but you must give with your heart !”
Whom to give?
Many times we avoid giving by finding fault with the person who is seeking. However, being judgemental and rejecting a person on the presumption that he may not be the most deserving is not justified. Give without being judgemental !
How to give?
Coming to the manner of giving, one has to ensure that the receiver does not feel humiliated, nor the giver feels proud by giving. Let not your left hand know what your right hand givesCharity without publicity and fanfare, is the highest form of charity. Give quietly. While giving let not the recipient feel small or humiliated. After all what we give never really belonged to us. We come to this world with nothing and will go with nothing. The thing gifted was only with us for a temporary period. Why then take pride in giving away something which really did not belong to us? Give with grace and with a feeling of gratitude.
What should one feel after giving?
We all know the story of Eklavya. When Dronacharya asked him for his right thumb as Guru Dakshina, he unhesitatingly cut off the thumb and gave it to Dronacharya. There is a little known sequel to this story. Eklavya was asked whether he ever regretted the act of giving away his thumb. He replied, and the reply has to be believed to be true, as he was asked when he was dying. His reply was “Yes ! I regretted this only once in my life. It was when Pandavas were coming in to kill Dronacharya who was broken hearted on the false news of death of his son Ashwathama and had stopped fighting. It was then that I regretted the loss of my thumb. If the thumb was there, no one could have dared hurt my Guru! The message to us is clear. Give and never regret giving !
How much should we provide for our heirs?
Ask yourself, “Are we taking away from them the gift of work, a source of happiness?”. Leave your kids enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing”. Quoting Sant Kabir: “When the wealth in the house increases, When water fills a boat, Throw them out with both hands“

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

 

Do not move away from a Sadhu or your Guru because he did not/does not speak to you.

 

Kabirdas explains, "We move with our neighbours, friends and relatives. If some misunderstanding arises with them feel happy and blessed. Just drop that relationship because if they are affectionate towards you, you will not come out of it. If any misunderstanding arises with Sadhus/your Guru, do not give it up as a blessing but somehow try to earn back their association. Do everything to earn their Grace back. Kabirdas gives a wonderful example for this – 'we go to the market and buy a 'măla' (chain) made of ordinary beads worth some 5 or 10 rupees for our child. When this breaks we throw it away as it is not of much worth. However, when the diamond or gold necklace bought for the child gets cut, we repair it and keep it safe. Relationship with other people is akin to the chain made of ordinary beads while association with Mahans is akin to diamond or gold necklace. Do not feel happy and blessed if their association gets cut. Go repeatedly to their Presence and somehow manage to bring about reconciliation.' He speaks on the glory of Satsangh and Sadhus. The reason for this is that he yearned very deeply for a Guru and attained Him with lots of difficulties.

 

Kabirdas, in spite of belonging to Islam religion, was attracted to Rama Năma. He desired to receive upadesa of this Mantra from Ramananda, a great Mahatama in Kăsi.

 

Kabirdas dressed up only as befitting his religion. Everyday he would go to the gates of Ramananda's ashram and await him. He would plead with everyone who walked out of this gate, "I desire to receive upadesa of Rama Năma from the Guru. Please recommend my case to him." But, none seemed to help him. Instead they advised him to chant the Mantra of his religion. He would plead, "No! My heart desires only Rama Mantra. Please speak about me to the Guru." Not at all discouraged by the words of others, he would stand at the gates of the ashram all through the day, everyday, without fail. He never once felt that he should not return here as none seemed to help him. For months he stood at the gates of the ashram, awaiting the Grace of the Guru. Mahans have no sleep. The 'Atma', remaining as a 'Săkshi', watches the body taking rest. This is a kind of 'nishtai'. Humans are caught in the three states of 'jagrat' (waking), 'swapna' (dream) and 'sushupti' (dreamless sleep). But, Mahans are in the fourth state of 'turiya'. Therefore, there is no sleep for them. When Ramananda was in this state, he heard the conversation between his 'puja murtis' Rama and Lakshmana. Rama told Lakshmana, "Oh! Lakshmana! Let us leave this ashram!"

 

Lakshmana asked the brother, "Brother! Why do you wish to leave this ashram?"

 

Rama explained, "There is a person coming to the gates of this ashram every day desiring to receive upadesa. But, none seem to help him. Why then should we remain here?"

 

Immediately, Ramanada pleaded with Rama, "Oh! Lord! I was not aware of this till now. I will find out and give upadesa to this person. You should not leave this ashram. You must remain here, please."

 

Early the next morning Ramananda took his 'kamandalu' and japa măla and wearing the 'Păduka' (Holy sandals) walked to Hanuman ghat on the banks of the Ganges for his bath. Kabirdas was lying on the steps leading to the river, weeping, "Today, too, I have not received upadesa of Rama Năma. I have not been able to receive the Grace of the Guru!" He lifted his head when suddenly the Păduka worn by Ramananda hit his head! Mahans always have the Lord's name on their tongue. Since, his foot hit against something in the dark, Ramananda uttered, 'Rama! Rama! Rama!' The Sun had not yet risen but Kabirdas looked at this Sun that was Ramananda! Ramananda stood there lustrous like the Sun! Kabirdas's heart leaped with joy as he heard Rama Năma uttered from the lips of the Guru. He thought, "I desired upadesa of Rama Mantra from the Guru. But, how blessed am I that I have received it at the banks of the Ganga with the blessings of the Guru's Păduka touching my head!" From that moment onwards Kabirdas began incessant japa of the 'Tăraka Mantra'. Due to his deep bhakti he attained the highest state.
