I am so happy that C.A.L. is together today. We went to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Here’s how it went down:

We got there obscenely early and there were already crowds there. All the cops have New Yorker accents. C. stopped counting balloons (that parents paid for and) kids let go at 127. And kids really do say the darndest things:

“Hi Indians! I’m learning about you in Social Studies!”

“Ooh look, jump rope! You know the Chinese are really good at jump-rope” (looking up at L., a Chinese student).

“I’m Canadian”

“Is that Santa Dude?” (Dad’s response: “What, are you from CALIFORNIA or something?”)

The parade was fantastic–worth the early morning with groggy friends in tow on the subway and fighting to maintain our spot near the front. And the cold. Boy it was cold that early in the morning, the coldest I am willing to tolerate without complaining every 30 seconds. Any colder than that and people will quickly get tired of me.

And now we’re listening to beautiful Santana music in Spanish. Santana, by the way, is from the same neighborhood that I spent most of my childhood in (in CAL). And English songs turned into Spanish–Demi Lovato is so much prettyier-sounding in Spanish, it turns out.

Sigh, this has been a great break so far, the best I could have ever asked for, considering life and all. The past few days have been great.

Tomorrow’s Black Friday and it’s going to be another absurdly early morning and another epic day worthy of its own blog entry (trust me, there will be one–if I don’t pass out for a good 23 hours to recuperate from all this epicness).

And now on to warmed-up chocolate cake and clean-up. What a day, what a day.

It was a most significant year for me: I discovered two passions that have remained with me ever sin

It was a most significant year for me: I discovered two passions that have remained with me ever since: football (or what our American friends call soccer) and reading. The latter came first, in the shape of comic books. I never had much time for the Marvel comics type, which weren’t that big in West Germany anyhow. My first comic purchase, in 1973 when I was I Grade 2, was a rendering of Laurel and Hardy, known in Germany by the less than gratifying moniker Dick und Doof (Fat and Dim), which I bought on a train journey with my sister. But that wasn’t as good as the old film shorts which were shown on German TV on Friday afternoons. So I went on to the comic book version of Looney Tunes, with Porky Pig (or Schweinchen Dick), Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Tweety and Sylvester, Roadrunner et al. This coincided with a failed campaign to persuade German TV not to pull the weekly Looney Tunes show from its schedule, a decision made due to the cartoons’ violence.

At about the same time, I picked up on the Fix & Foxi cartoons, a rather tame comic book with a cast of characters of varying attractiveness. My older brother by six years scoffed at Fix & Foxi, and waged a brutally relentless propaganda campaign against the comics and their originator, Rolf Kauka, whose good reputation my brother impugned in slanderous ways of such factually challenged nature, it would make Rush Limbaugh seem like a model of thoughtful tact and scrupulous truth. His objective: to get me reading the weekly Micky Maus comics (I now suspect that he figured he wouldn’t need to buy a copy if I did, and at the age of 13-going-on-14, he didn’t really want to be seen buying Micky Maus). So Fix & Foxi were dumped for the Disney comic, henceforth to be ridiculed and scorned. And he was right: I absolutely loved the adventures of Donald, his nephews and Onkel Dagobert (Scrooge), though I followed Micky and Goofy’s stories only halfheartedly. One winter-related memory stays with me: standing in the local, rather small supermarket by the very hot gas heater, which was covered with a polished stone slab, above which the magazines were kept (clearly the relationship between intense heat and paper did not worry the managers). Never since have I felt so comfortable in a shop.

Also in 1974 I read Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Langstrumpf (Pippi Longstocking) trilogy, which I knew from the Swedish TV series (I had a big crush on Anika). A few years ago, when Any Minor Dude was younger, I read the books with him. I still enjoyed them very much, probably as much as he did.

And so to the music that soundtracked my year1974. As always I am anxious to issue the caveat that I do not necessarily endorse the songs featured.

Lobo – I’d Love You To Love Me.mp3
This was first released in 1972, but entered the German charts only I late 1973, and topped the hitparades in early 1974. But before we amuse ourselves at the tardiness of German hipness, let it be recorded that I’d Love You To Love Me became a massive UK hit only in the summer on the back of its European success. I’d Love You To Want Me came into demand after playing in the background of an episode of the hugely popular police detective series Der Kommissar (the cultural inspiration behind the title of Falco’s huge 1982 hit), which just about every German watched on Friday nights. I think the youngest of my older sisters had the single. The singers name, Spanish for wolf, sounds like he belongs in the cast of the contemptuous Fix & Foxi comics. It will surprise most readers to learn that Lobo was not the singer’s real name. At passport control, he was better known as Roland Kent Lavoie. And one may be tempted to maintain a low opinion of a singer calling himself Lobo, but our man’s first group, The Rumours, also included Gram Parsons and Jim Stafford, who featured on the first Halloween mix.

Walter Scheel – Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen.mp3
As far as I can recall, this was the last record I brought at grandmother’s prompting, possibly because I could take very little pride in it. Still, it is a record of some historic interest. There can’t be many leading politicians whose careers featured a sojourn into the pop charts. Walter Scheel was West Germany’s foreign minister when he recorded this, a traditional German song (of the Volksmusik genre) about hitching a lift with a postal carriage, which he recorded with the Düsseldofer Männergesangsverein (Düsseldorf men’s singing club). It is said that Scheel recorded the single in a bid to obtain support for his ultimately successful bid to become German president, a lagely ceremonial position, in 1974. Before becoming president, Scheel also briefly served as interim chancellor after the great Willy Brandt resigned over a spying scandal (one of his top aides was exposed as an East German spy). Scheel’s successor as foreign minister was the treacherous Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who never had a Top 10 hit. (Thank you to Teena for turning up the MP3 of this.)

The Sweet – Teenage Rampage.mp3
Teenage Rampage was the hit in early 1974, The Six Teens (which will feature in 1974 Part 2) later in the year. It may be the nostalgia speaking, but I think these are my favourite Sweet songs. Teenage Rampage is the anthem for the revolution of the youth with The Sweet as the insurrection’s heralds, as though they are The Who for the bubblegum brigade (The Sweet were big Who fans, and Townsend in turn praised the group). “The kids are finally startin’ to get the upper hand. They’re out in the streets, they turn on the heat and soon they could be completely in command. Imagine the sensation of teenage occupation.” It was like punk need never happen.

.

Ringo Starr – Photograph.mp3
A good case could be made for Photograph being the best solo single by an ex-Beatle. In fact, some people argue that Ringo’s was the most impressive of the Fab Four’s post-Beatles careers. I don’t think I would agree with those people as much as I disagree with those who dismiss Ringo’s solo output, which did produce a handful of fine songs. The truth is that Ringo started from a base of low expectation: for the haters, it’s the easy (and lazy) option to claim that he failed to proceed from that, and the advocates of Ringo’s genius might be overegging things because John, Paul and George did not quite meet the genius of the Beatles era. In any case, Photograph — Ringo’s best solo song and biggest hit — was co-written with George Harrison.

.

Dan The Banjoman – Dan The Banjoman.mp3
Where is the banjo the title is promising us? The synth-like sound was apparently created by the overlaying of several guitar tracks. Sounds more like someone blowing on a comb to me. You don’t really hear instrumentals in the charts anymore — well, not since the 1970s. Back then, every year one or two instrumentals would become big hits. Before Dan the Banjoman there was Popcorn and Mouldy Old Dough. And Springwater’s mournful I Will Return, (which, like Popcorn, featured HERE). Dan The Banjoman was a project of the same guy who did Springwater, the multi-instrumentalist Phil Cordell, who died in 2007. It became a West German #1 hit twice, returning to the top spot after featuring in a commercial for orange juice.

.

Goodness, this is an awful novelty Schlager song. Vicky informs the titular Theo with deafening stridence which broaches no dissent that they are going to Lodz, a city in Poland. But Vicky clearly hasn’t thought this through, even as she correctly identifies the sound a cow makes (oh, but she does). To travel from the capitalist, imperialist Federal Republic of Germany to the socialist workers’ paradise of Poland was not as simple as packing an overnight bag and hopping into your Volksie bus. Just organising the visa was a bureaucratic nightmare. And then there were the border controls as Vicky and Theo would enter the workers’ and peasants state of the Democratic Republic of Germany! No, Theo, you don’t really want to go to Lodz. I wonder how many German readers of my age adapted the lyrics to: “Steh auf, Du altes Murmeltier, bevor ich Dir die Fresse polier’”? For our German friends, the skit by the once very funny comedian Otto Waalkes, riffing on Theo in sermon mode.

.

The Rubettes – Sugar Baby Love.mp3
The reader may be surprised to learn that Any Major Dude With Half A Heart has quite a vocal range. Your correspondent can drone a manly baritone, whirr like a tenor, and squeal a mean falsetto, even without testicular interference. But your humble servant’s falsetto cannot reproduce the ear-bursting, dog-attracting eunuch’s call in Sugar Baby Love without risking damage to the vocal chords. This was one of the big summer hits of 1974, alongside Lodz-bound Theo, the universally beloved Seasons In The Sun, MFSB’s Philly soul anthem TSOP, and the next song.

.

Charlie Rich – The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.mp3
I would sing this at a karaoke, with good cheer and no measure of embarrassment. I’d be the Thinning-hair Fox. They called Charlie Rich “The Silver Fox”, and I cannot think of any other grey-haired performer in the upper reaches of the charts at the time, or many at any time (if we discount the legions who dye their hair, of course). So here we have a true innovator, a man who not only embraced his middle age, but flaunted it — grey hair, midlife-crisis denim shirts & cowboy boots combo, the whole old geezer thing. It’s tempting to dismiss the song because it was popular, but it’s a damn good country song. The man’s heartbreak and regret are palpable, possibly because he realises that the age of disco is approaching and he won’t ever again pull most beautiful girls in the world like he used to.

.

Candlewick Green – Who Do You Think You Are.mp3
Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods – Who Do You Think You Are.mp3
Opportunity knocked for Candlewick Green. The group won the famous British TV talent show, and were signed by Decca (a label forever condemned to finding the new Beatles in compensation for Dick Rowe’s failure to see talent in the original Beatles, at an audition at which they really did suck; a failure which even the signing of the Rolling Stones could not make up for). It took Candlewick Green a couple of years to score their solitary hit, and even then stalled at #24 in Britain. The song, written by Des Dyer and Clive Scott of fellow one-hit wonder band Jigsaw, was a North American hit in the version by Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods, whose version I include here for my transatlantic friends (they also covered Paper Lace’s Billy Don’t Be A Hero). If any of the songs here sounds like 1974, I’d say it’s Who Do You Think You Are.

.

Santana – Samba Pa Ti.mp3
Samba Pa Ti was originally released in 1970, but became a hit in West Germany only in 1974. I suspect somebody in my immediate surroundings had the record, but who? Of those in my family who bought records, only my mother would have bought this, but I knew all her records, and she didn’t have that. So I can only guess that the amiable couple who lived above us, Peter and Karin, with whom our family regularly socialised, had a Santana thing going on. Either way, I was impressed with Samba Pa Ti (another instrumental, of course), which sounded terribly adult to me. When I hear it, I smell a particular strawberry-scented bubblegum which was very popular at the time, which goes to show just how suggestive of faint memories music can be.

Well. Been AWOL for a while, but I now return with another entry in my ever expanding cache of point

Well.

Been AWOL for a while, but I now return with another entry in my ever expanding cache of pointless lists that nobody asked for.

Recently I was involved in a discussion about cover songs. No, I don’t know why. The point is, it spawned this little ditty -

The Top Ten Cover Songs You Probably Didn’t Even Realize Were Cover Songs.

It really is exactly what it says.

Ten: “The Man Who Sold the World.” (Nirvana)

I almost hate to admit it, but I think I genuinely prefer Nirvana’s live, unplugged version of this song to David Bowie’s 1970 original album version. While such a statement may seem somewhat blasphemous, in Nirvana’s defense I heard their version first – and, to add insult to injury, it’s really good. I suppose that your enjoyment of this song, like most on this list, simply boils down to when you were born, or when you first heard it. If you’re a child of the ’70s, you’ll probably prefer Bowie’s version. If, however, you are a child of the glorious ’90s, you’ll probably go for Kurt’s take on it. Regardless, the irony of the situation does not seem lost on Bowie himself. Thanks to Cobain covering it, even to this day when Bowie performs the song himself he comes across “kids that come up afterwards and say, ‘It’s cool you’re doing a Nirvana song.’ And I think, ‘Fuck you, you little tosser!’”

I think even Kurt Cobain could get behind that one. And he wasn’t really known for shooting off his mouth. (Just the area above it.)

Nine: “Black Magic Woman.” (Santana)

I honestly was not aware, literally up to this very moment, that this was originally a Fleetwood Mac song. Peter Green wrote it in 1968; Santana made it a hit in 1970. Better luck next time, Peter Green. Well, at least you still have Fleetwood Mac who I’m sure is going to be huge andOH YOU QUIT THE BAND.

BTW…who the fuck is Peter Green?

Eight: “Mr. Tambourine Man.” (The Byrds)

Bob Dylan is probably one of the most covered artists of all time. I say “probably” because I don’t know for sure and I’m too lazy to look it up. But rest assured, he’s gotta be, like, top twelve at least. Anyways, this is another instance of a song taking me by surprise. I’m sure more people are familiar with the Byrd’s trippy version of this song than Dylan’s original – myself included. Either version is solid, though – in fact, it has the (meaningless) honor of being only one of three songs to be included twice on Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Songs. Not too shabby for a song about tambourines that (at least in Dylan’s version) doesn’t include any tambourineing.

Seven: “Lovers in a Dangerous Time.” (The Barenaked Ladies)

Little bit of Canadian content for y’all.

The Barenaked Ladies are a strange beast. They’re all fairly talented musicians who can write a hook filled pop masterpiece seemingly whenever they want to. It’s usually combined with bizarre to nonsensical lyrics that range from obscure pop culture references, to abstract fragments, to genuinely insightful commentary – all the while being either rapped by Ed Robertson or operatically sung by Steven Page with gleeful abandon.

Occasionally, they have curbed their wackier tendencies to produce something much more subdued and restrained, which can at times border on being fully beautiful.

Like their cover of this Bruce Cockburn song. After it’s release in 1991 (fittingly for a Cockburn tribute album) it became a Canadian radio staple – a certifiable hit for the band. Even now it continues to crop up on the radio from time to time, though you rarely – if ever – hear Cockburn’s original.

Six: “No More I Love Yous” (Annie Lennox)

This song easily could have made my Thirteen Guilty Pleasure Songs You Hate to Love. (Or Love to Hate) list as well. But it didn’t, and luckily it’s found itself a new avenue for infamy on my blog as being a catchy as hell song we all instantly recognize as an Annie Lennox ditty, but was in fact originally written and performed by some band called “The Lover Speaks.” No, I’ve never heard of them either, and when I type the name into Google image search, a confusing array of pictures, none of which features anything remotely similar to a band, comes up. So apparently even the internet has forgotten about them as well.

I think that what I’m trying to say is, cover though it may be…I think Annie’s pretty much got a monopoly on this song. Good for her!

Five: “Downtown Train.” (Rod Stewart)

Rod Stewart covers Tom Waits. There’s something funny to be said here, but I honestly don’t know what it is.

No, not funny – weird.

The Stewart song is the radio friendly one; the Waits version is the “good” one. In fact, if there ever comes a time when you’re contemplating downloading or buy Rod Stewart’s entire discography, I urge you to just download Wait’s 1985 masterpiece Rain Dogs instead. You can thank me later.

Four: “Hallelujah.” (Jeff Buckley)

Now, to be fair, I think people are about as aware of the Buckley version of this beautiful song as they are of the Leonard Cohen original. Both versions are excellent, by the way – thanks to Cohen’s poetic lyrics and simple, yet evocative melody. But it will forever be associated with Buckley – partly due to his untimely and tragic death, and partly do to his stunning and haunting arrangement of it. Cohen wrote a classic, artistic ballad; Jeff Buckley perfected it.

Three: “Nothing Compares 2 U.” (Sinead O’Connor)

I had no idea this was originally a Prince song. I suppose the number “2″ and the letter “u” in the title should have helped tip me off, but it didn’t. I truly thought this was an original song by Sinead. And, after hearing Prince’s version, I’d like to continue thinking that, please.

Incidentally, this song title was the inspiration behind U2’s name.

No it wasn’t.

Two: “Respect.” (Aretha Franklin)

“Respect” is to Aretha Franklin what “Nothing Compares 2 U” is to Sinead O’Connor – a signature song. A song that we immediately identify with these artists, and, when thinking about these artists, it’s usually the first one that pops into our noggins’. It seems odd then, that both these womens signature songs should be covers. I don’t really know what that says about them, except that they both totally own these tunes. Otis Redding may have been the first to spell out the word “respect” for mass audiences, but it was tailor made for the Queen of Soul. I’ve never heard Otis Redding’s version of the song, and have no need to; no one could possibly come close to matching Aretha.

One: “All Along the Watchtower.” (Jimi Hendrix)

Dylan’s was good. HIS was better.

From the iconic opening guitar riff, to the whacked out solo, this is the definitive version of Bob Dylan’s tune. It’s been covered countless times since, but Jimi’s 1968 version remains the one to top. It’s a song that makes people go “REALLY?” whenever somebody mentions that it’s not a Hendrix track, but one of Dylan’s.

Which I think perfectly sums up just what this list is all about.

Well.

There were a few more songs that I came across that would have fit this list, but I tried to wittle it down to the best ten. Feel free to tell me what I missed and mock my attempt in general below.

So, until tomorrow, enjoy some Annie Lennox.

And you damn well know you will.

Track list:
01- Them Changes 3:22
02- I Still Love You, Anyway 4:14
03- Heart’s Delight 4:08

You know it. Its awesome an its not the Santana, pretender version that gets used on supermarket commercials. Kick back and enjoy.

From Wikipedia
“Oye Como Va” is a song written and composed by Latin jazz and mambo musician Tito Puente in 1963 and popularized by Santana’s cover of the song in 1970 on their album Abraxas, helping to catapult Santana into stardom with the song reaching #13 on the Billboard Top 100. The song also reached #11 on Billboard’s Easy Listening survey and #32 on their R&B chart.

The title comes from the first words;

This song gave Santana his first number one song, spent 12 weeks on top of the Billboard charts, won Song Of The Year, Record of The Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2000 Grammys, and was the last number one hit of the 1990’s and first number one of the 2000’s. To put it shortly: This song was massive!

22
“Making Movies is casting spells…” how the Rolling Stones and the Beatle helped promote satanism in 1967…. the end of this is DEEP!
Let’s look at the FRUIT of satanism, idolatry, and rebellion against God, from 1967. NOT Freedom- addictions, broken lives, sexual diseases, suicides, abortions, and broken families
How drugs are related to witchcraft. Jimi Hendrix testifies to his servanthood to satan. Whoever is taken captive to this, there is still time. Jesus Blood is powerful and can still redeem their soul into life, before they die.
satan is a lie. Even thru the greatest entertainers (false prophets) in the world. How the Beach Boys created the culture of southern California and created witchcraft music. Kurt Cobain… 90s grunge satanist, (I think he may have gotten saved before he died… Hallelujah!). Also NIN and U2 are covered in here!
Supernatural is a 1999 concept album by Santana. The songs on the album represent one man’s personal emotions through its various Cuban and Latin rhythms. It went 15 times platinum in the US and won eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

The album, conceived by Clive Davis and A&R’d by Pete Ganbarg, was phenomenally successful, eventually selling over 25 million copies worldwide; it is generally seen to have revived Santana’s dormant career.[weasel words].

“Supernatural” debuted at #19 on the Billboard Hot 200 on July 3, 1999 but topped (after 18 weeks) the chart on October 30, 1999 and stayed there for 12 non-consecutive weeks. It included the hit single “Smooth”, which featured Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas on vocals, and was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks. The follow-up single, “Maria Maria” (which featured The Product G&B), was #1 on the same chart for 10 weeks. Santana and Rob Thomas won 2 Grammys for their collaboration on the song “Smooth” while Santana and Everlast won another for the song “Put Your Lights On”.

AllHipHop Reports Rapper Juelz Santana has responded to recent comments that former group member Cam

AllHipHop Reports

Rapper Juelz Santana has responded to recent comments that former group member Cam’ron made in regards to a potential Dipset reunion.

Juelz appeared on AllHipHop.com’s Eric B. and Friends morning show yesterday (November 18), where he addressed Cam’ron’s most recent statements claiming that “Dipset was over.”

While the prospects of a reunion between estranged group members like Jim Jones, Hell Rell and Freaky Zeeky are slim, Juelz remained somewhat optimistic, despite Cam’ron’s refusal to do business with his former allies.

According to a Juelz, the root of the dispute is centered around a bad business deal with Diplomat Records, which was run by Cam. The label released Juelz’ first two albums From Me to U (2003) and What the Game’s Been Missing! (2005).

“I would love to do it,” Santana told AllHipHop.com. “If you really look me and Jim [Jones] been shouting out the Byrd. Despite the situation with Cam and despite Cam getting on radio interviews saying ‘oh I will never do nothing with them again.’ My whole thing for not being next to Cam at this moment was ‘cause we had a bad business situation…I didn’t understand how I person that I thought was my brother could put me in a situation like that, even though I respect the situation just by putting me in the game, I’ll never take that away, but I couldn’t just stand there and just be a fool no more.”

Despite Cam’s statements that Dipset is finished, the Harlem native recently launched Dipset West, with his former group members.

“I put a lot of bricks in that building,” Juelz stated. “So my work was more than put in, so even if you can say you brought me to the game, well guess what, I gave you everything for brining me to the game. I helped build that Diplomat building to the top floor. When you think of Dipset I’ll always be in your brain. If Cam feels like for whatever reason he is too big to get over whatever happened, or he’s too stubborn or whatever the case may be, so be it. At the end of the day, I am comfortable. I can look in the mirror.”

As for Juelz Santana is not wasting any time moving his career forward, with several mixtapes planned, in addition to releases by his group Skull Gang and his own solo album, Born to Lose, Built To Win.

Santana recently shot a video in Los Angeles for the single “Homerun” with chart topping New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne which will be featured on the album.

So far, featured artists on Juelz’ third studio album include Chrisette Michelle, Chris Brown and others

Sometimes, the cover becomes more popular and successful than the original release. Did you know that Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” is such a cover? It was originally a Fleetwood Mac song.

Now this wasn’t the Fleetwood Mac that attained worldwide success in the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s. This was the original Fleetwood Mac that formed as part of the London Blues scene in the late 1960s, led by guitarist Peter Green.

The song was originally penned by Green and released as a Fleetwood Mac single in 1968. Unfortunately, Green had severe mental health issues as he struggled with the onset of schizophrenia. These problems were enhanced by his abuse of LSD. Years later, after regaining some of his health, he commented that he “went on a trip and didn’t come back.”

Two years after the Fleetwood Mac release, on November 14, 1970, Carlos Santana and his self-named band released their version of “Woman” reaching the #4 spot on the U.S. Billboard and forever linking it in the minds of the music world to Santana.

Here’s Santana playing their signature tune live in Australia.

And the Santana version is actually a medley with Gabor Szabo’s “Gypsy Queen.”

play#Gabor+Szabo:Gypsy+Queen:573699:s84118.15673.10613.1.1.66%2Cstd_a294ed47f1e5ad3d6f34274a6d1efe80

Szabo was a Hungarian refuge who escaped the Communist regime there and emigrated to the United States in 1956. He began playing guitar at the age of 14, having been inspired by the jazz recordings he had heard on the Voice of America broadcasts.

So we have a British band, inspired by the blues of the American south, penning what would be an international hit for a Mexican-American band, who had incorporated the Hungarian folk-influenced jazz of a refuge from Communist tyranny. Now that’s rock and roll!

Been awhile since I’ve been able to check in here. I figured I’d stop in and post up on some of the things that have happened and those that are rumored.

Tony Reagins Contract

I’m happy with the Angels extending Reagins’ contract. With Scioscia’s extension and now Reagins, this shows a stability that this team has become known for. I also think this extension is going to be a prelude to some big moves this offseason, but more on that later.

The rumor mill…gotta love the off-season. Where to start?

John Lackey – I don’t think the Angels are going to re-sign him. I think that they will make an offer in good faith hoping to sign him, but he’ll go elsewhere. My gut is telling me that he’ll sign in the NL somewhere, be it the Mets or the Brewers. He will probably get 5-6 years for $15 million per. Too rich in my opinion for the Angels. I have always liked Lackey’s competitive nature and his ability to pitch the big game. But Lackey has never felt like a true ace to me. I’ll be sad to see him go, but I just don’t see how the Angels can sign him at what he’ll be seeking.

Figgins – Figgins is coming back, I’m pretty sure of it. The Angels do not have a suitable lead off hitter. I think if asked, most fans would say Aybar would be the leading candidate to replace Figgins at the top of the order. But the numbers say otherwise. Let’s take a look.

Aybar has career .285 batting average and .353 on base percentage. He finally got to play full time and it showed. He hit .312 in 2009, which really helped bring up his career .262 average. Playing full time has really allowed Aybar to shine. But is he ready for a leadoff role? The .298 OBP prior to 2009 says otherwise. Granted, those numbers come in less playing time, but if you watch him at the plate, you can see he’s better deep in the lineup.

Figgins on the other hand. has a career .298 batting average and .395 on base percentage. He was more patient at the plate this year by drawing 101 walks…36 more than his previous best in 2006. Figgins also ranked 3rd overall in the majors in runs scored in 2009 with 114. Pujols was first and Pedroia was second.

Unless the Angels are looking to trade for a true leadoff hitter and let Figgins go, there isn’t anyone suited within the organization to fill Figgins’ shoes.

I’ll post up my thoughts on the Curtis Granderson rumors later.

Pretend Time!

Now it’s time for me to pretend I’m Tony Reagins and tell you what my offseason plans are. Rumors have it that the Blue Jays are looking for a middle infielder, a starting pitcher and relief help. I offer up Saunders, Aybar and Jespen (or some minor leaguers in lieu of Jespen) for Roy Hallay. This would be contingent on being able to sign Halladay to a contract.

Brandon Wood gets his chance to play full time by moving back to SS and taking over for Aybar. There’s no pressure offensively on him as he’ll be batting deep in the lineup.

I sign Vlad to a 1 year with 2nd year option on the cheap. Vlad is still a feared hitter and can still do damage despite declining power numbers. Signing him at $7 million per with incenives will be a bargain to DH and hit deeper in the lineup.

I sign some bullpen help, but make a serious run at Jose Valverde. He’s the best closer available and can be insurance to Fuentes (or a replacement) depending on the situation coming out of spring training.

I re-sign Oliver for 2 years to solidify the bullpen even more. Getting Shields back from injury and signing Oliver replaces Jespen and brings the bullpen back to a more reliable relief situation.

I shop Gary Matthews Jr to whomever may be interested. I don’t think he’ll be traded, but if the right deal comes along to solidify the team and perhaps the minors, even at the expense of picking up his salary, I certainly consider it.

I also look to pick up a solid #5 starter. If I can bring Jon Garland back cheap, I do it. But there are plenty of pitchers available that can be had cheaply. If nothing fits, O’Sullivan can fill in, as can Palmer.

2010 lineup:

Figgins – 3B

Abreu – RF

Hunter – CF

Morales – 1B

Rivera – LF

Napoli/Mathis – C

Kendrick – 2B

Wood – SS

Rotation

Halladay

Weaver

Santana

Kazmir

Free Agent/O’Sullivan/Palmer

Bullpen:

Oliver

Shields

Bulger

Fuentes

Valverde

Arredondo

Ortega

Rodriguez

Rodriguez

Bench:

Quinlan

Izturis

Sandoval

After the last few offseasons, I think the Angels are really poised to make a big splash this year. Frustrating postseasons and the inability to land th players they targeted via trades of free agency have had an impact. The Angels will incapable of making a trade for Miguel Cabrera or landing CC Sabathia or Mark Teixeira. The thoughts of what could have been with Teixeira at 1B and Morales in LF make me drool! The Angels have not made a huge move in the offseason since landing Vlad in 2003. Signing Hunter was big, but not huge.

It’s time to do it again, this time it will have a direct impact on the postseason.

And Tony, if you’re reading this, my counselling is for hire.
