Bali offers something for everyone. From humble homestays to lux resorts, boutique B&Bs to private villas, whether to save or splurge, you’ll find the hotel that is just right for you.

For me that means a boutique hotel with clean, comfortable rooms, stylish decorations, a good breakfast, friendly staff and most importantly, it must have that certain something that is hard to describe but results in simply feeling home.

I have listed my favorites and a few that come highly recommended by friends or popular review. If I’ve stayed there myself, I’ve added a *. To give you an idea of how much you’ll be spending, I’ve added a price estimate:

$= Less than EUR 40 per night
$$= Between EUR 40 and 100 per night
$$$= More than EUR 100 per night

South Bali

Ellie’s in Nusa Dua *$ – One of my favorites. Clean, cozy and the managers are lovely. A bit remote, but everything else makes up for that. We did a full venue hire, which proved a truly unforgettable experience.

Rumah Bali in Tandjung Benoa *$$ – Fabulous bed and breakfast just 150m from the beach. Excellent food as it’s part of Bumbu Bali, one of Bali’s top restaurants.

Legong Keraton in Canggu *$$ – Owned by my relatives. Right on the beach. A bit big for us to be honest, but great if you’re in Bali to surf. The rooms are spacious and very clean.

Villa Balquisse in Jimbaran $$ – Boutique hotel or villa rental run by Moroccan-Belgian lady. Friends give this one a rave review.

The Villas in Seminyak $$$ – If you’re willing to splurge, this is the one Harper’s Bazaar says keeps “sheer luxury in style”.

The Bale in Nusa Dua $$$ – And if you care to splurge even more, this one rates among the top hotels in the world.

Ubud

Tegal Sari *$ – Best hotel we’ve ever stayed at. Elegant, clean, friendly, great value for money. They offer free transportation in Ubud, and free breakfast in your room (or balcony with the stunning view).

Nick’s $ – Hotel, pension and homestay with good reviews for those who travel on a budget.

Lady Bamboo $$ – A cozy bed and breakfast in the heart of Ubud.

Alila $$$ – Famous for its infinity pool and friends say it was lovely, great service and beautiful hotel.

Sanur

Flashbacks $ – This Australian owned Bed and Breakfast is cute, friendly and clean, and right in the centre of Sanur.

Tropical Bali Hotel $ – Slightly remote location, but clean, spacious rooms around a nice pool. Very nice owners.

Tandjung Sari *$$$ – Looking for some luxury in a more authentic setting, this boutique hotel has been in style since 1962. Has definitely the quietest, most pristine stretch of beach in Sanur.

North Bali

Kubu Lalang in Lovina *$ – Loved it. Very clean, friendly and relaxed with comfy daybeds and good breakfast.

Damai in Lovina $$$ – Supposedly has the best restaurant on the island.

East Bali

Lumbung Damuh $ – Relax in a traditional wooden structure on stilts on the beach.

Seraya Shores *$$ – Beautiful and romantic; great chef.

Alila Manggis $$$ – Luxury resort near Candi Dasa famous for its cuisine and cooking school.

With all its beaches, it will come as no surprise that water sports are high on the agenda. Bali is a surfer’s paradise, with the best surfing for experts in Uluwatu and Canggu and in Kuta for beginners. Scuba diving is another popular choice, as the water in Bali is warm all year long. The best diving spots are in the east in Amed and Tulamben where you can take PADI certified diving courses. You can also snorkel here, or head to the west to Menjangan (Deer) Island, which supposedly has the best variety of fish and coral.

Other water activities include white water rafting in Sayan, west of Ubud; kayaking on some of the quieter rivers and on Lake Tamblingan; canoeing at Lake Batur; and dolphin watching by sunset in Lovina in the north.

In Nusa Dua, Sanur and other coastal resorts, wind surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, and other water related fun such as banana boat, flying fish, etc. can be found in abundance.

Hiking through the rice paddies is a good way to explore the inland and small villages of Bali. And so is mountain biking. Bike-Baik or Banyantree tours organize downhill cycling tours with visits to farms and plantations. Both activities can take you up the volcanoes, which are definitely worth a visit, and overall not too strenuous.

If you decide to stay in a resort, you can make use of the golf courses, tennis courts and swimming pools. You can also go fishing, bungee jumping, or sailing to one of the smaller nearby islands. If you go sailing, you can either rent a luxury yacht for the day, or hire a local perahu for an hour or so.

Not being an athletic person myself, I have undoubtedly missed a few sports, but we did go parasailing in Sanur, which was great fun.

Schoene Gruesse

Alex

Bali Travel – Things That You May Not Know You Can Do In Bali
Here is a starter list of 20 new things you may want to try when you are next in Bali:
1) Cruising ; Pick a boat of your choice, and head for the high seas! Nowadays Bali has a great selection of safe boats to choose from. Go for a fun filled family outing or go more adventurous with some of the latest cutting edge crafts which deliver the speed.
Bali Hai Cruises, Sea Safari Cruises, Bounty Cruises.
2) Bird Park ; You don’t need to be a bird watcher to enjoy this colourful park. Even better, arrive later in the afternoon, and enjoy some amazing sun-set melodies. Take a morning off, and discover the beauty of an array of tropical birds Bali has to offer. A great choice for enthusiasts and families. (located at Taman Burung – open 08:00 – 18:00 daily) .
3) Bali Dance Performances ; Be enthralled by unique Balinese dances ! Try to catch one of each of: Kecak, Legong and Fire Dances, at least. There are dozens of different troupes to choose from, each with their own following. Keep in mind, shows in hotels and tourist restaurants offer vanilla flavour, and sometimes mechanical re-creations of the real thing. Head out to some of the villages, and you will be handsomely rewarded with the authentic fare.
4) Diving ; Put your PADI license to use, or if you are a diving newbie, just do it, and get your PADI certificate in Bali! A range of dive organizers for the experienced, and dive schools for the new comers are available to choose from. Some offer PADI ‘Youth Scuba’ courses for ages 5+.
5) Designer Shopping ; No, I am not talking about the ‘fake originals’ that litter the streets of many other Asian locations. In the recent years, Bali has attracted some of the most talented original designers, and artists from around the world (both the East and the West). This coupled with the inherent artistic capabilities of the Balinese, means that Bali today enjoys a large number of original designer shops. You can find anything from post-modern lighting installations, to Imperial Chinese style sideboards, and from original water fountain designs to some of the best jewelry designed and manufactured anywhere in the world.
6) Fishing; Go after that marlin or try your hand at yellow fin tuna! Most boats provide full tackle, bait and a running commentary, a friendly, giggly banter which makes the day out that much more enjoyable. (fishing boats from Benoa Harbour or Sanur)
7) Dolphin Watching; Enjoy these all-time favourites in their natural habitat. They are at their best first thing in the morning. Also, the soft hues of the sun-rise provide amazing colours for the photography enthusiasts. However, you will need to plan ahead for this one, since Lovina is in the North of the island, and you will more than likely be staying in a hotel or a rental villa in the south.
Elephant Safari Park; Arguably, one of the best in South East Asia! Great location and landscaped gardens. Don’t forget to do the elephant safari ride.
9) Jet Skiing; Re-create those favourite Baywatch moments! Due to their environmental impact, only available at some selected beaches across the island.
Only for those who get withdrawal symptoms from being away from the hustle and bustle of big-city life! All the noise, thrills and danger of the real thing! Choice of single or double carts
10) Helicopter Tours ; Go on, splash out for that once in a life-time experience! Spectacular views over Bali even Lombok. Take in the gentle rice terraces from the best vantage point, or get up close and personal with a volcano! Not cheap, but certainly an experience never to forget. (Air Bali)
11)Golfing; A number of 18 hole courses are available across Bali . As you would expect, each more beautiful than the other. Relax on an easy course, or challenge yourself to one of the more demanding courses designed by professionals. Either way, don’t miss the spectacular views over the Indian Ocean or one of Bali ’s great volcanoes. Most courses in Bali are to international standards, and many offer clubhouses and recreational facilities for the rest of the family.
12) Kite Boarding; Some great wind and lift, as well as the equipment for rental is available at Nusa Dua beaches . But make sure you have a great story lined up for your insurance company! Keep in mind, this really is an Extreme Sport.
13) Monkey Watching ; Experience mischievous macaques in full action! Also, some good restaurants and eateries nearby. However, be careful of your cameras, glasses and the like! The Sacred Monkey Forest – Ubud
14) Horse Riding; Enjoy one of the equestrian centres at your doorstep! Selection of horses, with courses for the beginners. Wonderful escorted tours through the rice terraces and tide permitting down the beach. (Umalas or Saba Bay Stables)
15) Mountain Cycling ; If you like cycling, why not enjoy a leisurely cycle with views of the Batur volcano! Lots to see, lots to learn, all on two wheels with an experienced guide. Bali Adventure Tours
16) Slingshot (Reverse Bungee); Defy gravity Bali style , with some spectacular 50m views! (That is, if you remember to open your eyes!) Not for the faint-hearted. Organisers follow international safety standards.
17) Paragliding ; Throw yourself off the sheer cliff faces of Uluwatu into the Indian Ocean! As a beginner you can enjoy great tandem jumps with well qualified professionals with great safety records.
18) Surfing ; If you’ve come with your board you’ll know where to go! If you are keen to learn, there are many schools to choose from, just head for the beach! Whilst Kuta is a good all rounder, Uluwatu ,Padang-Padang, and Balangan can provide some great tubes to test the more experienced. (some offer surfing lessons for ages 5+, so the whole family can enjoy surfing all together) .
19) Temple Ceremonies; Few visitors to Bali realise that in most instances you will be welcomed to attend local ceremonies as an observer. If you are lucky enough, you may be able to catch one of the Full Moon or Dark Moon ceremonies which attract devotees from far a field and are some of the most colourful events on the island. The great thing is, there is a temple ceremony every single day of the year in Bali, just ask around to find the nearest one during your stay. Please remember that a sensible dress code, and polite/respectful behaviour are essential for continued hospitality towards foreign guests. (Also, please note that women are not allowed in the temples during their menstrual period.

Setelah H+4 klo ngga salah, suasana kmbali seperti biasa,benar2 panass!

The kris or Keris is distinctive, asymmetrical dagger from Indonesia. Both weapon and spiritual object, the keris is considered as possess magical powers. The earliest known kris go back to tenth century and most probably spread from the island of java throughout South-east Asia.

Kris blades are usually narrow with a wide, asymmetrical base. The sheath is often made from wood, though examples from ivory, even gold, abound. A kris aesthetic value covers the dapur(the form and design of the blade, with some 40 variants), the pamor(the pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, with approximately 120 variants), and tangguh referring to the age and origin of a kris. A bladesmith, or Empu, makes the blade in layers of different iron ores and meteorite nickel. In high quality kris blades, the metal is folded dozens or hundreds of times and handled with the utmost precision. Empus are highly respected craftsmen with additional knowledge in literature, history and occult sciences.

Kris were worn everyday and at special ceremonies, and heirloom blades are handed down through successive generations. Both men and women wear them. A rich spirituality and mythology developed around this dagger. Kris are used for display, as talismans with magical powers, weapons, sanctified heirlooms, auxiliary equipment for court soldiers, accessories for ceremonial dress, an indicator of social status, a symbol heroism, etc.

Over the past three decades, kris lost some of their prominent social and spiritual meaning in society. Although active and honoured Empus who produce high-quality kris in the traditional way can still be found on many islands, their number is dramatically decreasing, and it is more difficult for them to find people to whom they transmit their skills. It was said that some kris helped prevent fires, death, agricultural failure, and many other problems. Likewise, they could also bring fortune, such as bountiful harvests. Kris could also have tremendous killing power. Some are rumored to stand on their tips when their real names are called by their masters. When making a blade, the blademaker could infuse into the blade any special spiritual ands power the owner desires.

In Bali now kerismaker it’s still 3 persons, they are already old persons and only one person still make the keris. It’s difficult to find people make the keris, because there is not motivation for balenese craftsman for make it. Why? Because for make the keris need many capital ( like nickel, iron, steel, charcoal from teak wood). And a new original balenese keris could have price from 300 USD, that’s why craftsman they don’t want to make it and there is not many buyers.

A young balenese craftsman I MADE SUMARDIYASA ,24 years old has a dream for continuing this tradition make the original balenese keris . After finished high school 2003, he begin learn working as a craftsman at home autodidact. He learned make knifes, sickles, spears and at 2007 learn make the keris(dagger). His ancestors give an assignment to be craftsman and forbid to work at the others places. When he refused request the ancestors, 6 months was unlucky and got the big problem, always was suffering from disorientation. When he promised to the ancestors to be a craftsman, he got back the lucky and got the calm. That’s why now he work as craftsman and blademaker to continue the balenese culture make the keris, and make motivation to the others craftsman to continue this tradition. The God give his divine revelation to communicate with the spirit of the keris, how to check the good keris and the bad keris for anyone.
