In the past, there have been many December blockbuster hits including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This December seems to be the month of potential blockbuster hits with Academy Award winning directors behind them. Plenty of promotion has gone into James Cameron’s latest film “Avatar” which is an action/fantasy film starring Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation”). Clint Eastwood’s latest film “Invictus” has some Oscar buzz to it and it stars Matt Damon and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman. Peter Jackson directs the screen adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” which has also garnered some Oscar buzz and it is definitely one of my top picks to see this December.

Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) brings “Nine” from stage to screen with an all-star cast including Academy Award Winners Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson. Another film that has Oscar buzz surrounding it is “Up in the Air” starring Academy Award Winner George Clooney. Before Robert Downey Jr. reprises his Iron Man role this summer, he first tackles on the role of “Sherlock Holmes”, which looks fun and action packed. Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale star in “Everybody’s Fine” which is probably the only film that takes place during the Holiday season. In terms of family films, there’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”.

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Last Station” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. “The Last Station” is a historical drama based on author Leo Tolstoy’s life and the cast is top notch. The film stars Christopher Plummer (“The Sound of Music”), James McAvoy (“Atonement”), and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” is Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) final film and looks to be quite a show. (tratto da Nuovo Oggi di sabato 28 novembre 2009) – Peter Jackson regista premio oscar per la trilogia de ‘Il Signore degli Anelli’ e cineata cult per le sue pellicole d’esordio come ‘Bad Taste’ era giovedì mattina a Roma, presso l’Hotel St. Regis Grand, per presentare la sua ultima fatica ‘Amabili Resti’. Una thriller difficile, sporco e affato facile da girare e recitare.
“In qualsiasi film con elementi fantastici è fondamentale che i personaggi credano a quello che si fa, così come il regista: quando si chiede al pubblico di intraprendere un viaggio, si firma una sorta di contratto. E’ come strizzare l’occhio e dire ‘d’accordo, crediamoci per due ore’. Per questo cerco di filmare in modo realistico anche gli aspetti piu’ fantastici di ogni mio film, come quando per ‘Il signore degli anelli’ usavo la handycam per le scene di combattimento”. Così Peter Jackson ha presentato alla stampa italiana la sua ultima fatica, ‘Amabili resti’, tratto dal best seller di Alice Sebold (edizioni e/o), in uscita negli Stati Uniti l’11 dicembre (in tempo utile per gli Oscar), mentre da noi sara’ nelle sale dal 5 febbraio distribuito da Universal.
Ad accompagnare il regista neozelandese la protagonista principale del film, Saoirse Ronan, già candidata dall’Academy per ‘Espiazione’, ora chiamata ad impersonare il delicato ruolo di Susie Salmon, quattordicenne brutalmente assassinata, che dopo la sua morte rimane sospesa in una sorta di limbo dal quale continua ad osservare la vita dei suoi familiari e delle persone care: “Come attrice e anche da spettatore, è stato difficilissimo per me accettare come le sia stata rubata la vita – racconta la giovane interprete – ma allo stesso tempo è stato proprio questo ad aiutarmi ad entrare nel personaggio, un’adolescente tipica, amata dai genitori. Dopo questo film capisco davvero cosa si possa provare in certi momenti, e il dolore provato da chi rimane”.
Nel cast, oltre a Saoirse Ronan, i genitori di Susie sono interpretati da Mark Wahlberg e Rachel Weisz, la nonna da Susan Sarandon e nel ruolo di Mr. Harvey c’è Stanley Tucci. “Sono stati tutti straordinari – dice Peter Jackson – ma ovviamente il compito piu’ difficile è toccato a quest’ultimo, che ha accettato la parte ma si percepiva quanto non fosse a suo agio a dover rendere quel personaggio. Stanley Tucci ha tre figli, e’ una persona gentile ed e’ un grande attore: per superare l’ostacolo, si e’ servito della metamorfosi richiesta per il ruolo, dal parrucchino biondo e i baffi fino alle lenti azzurre per gli occhi. Guardandosi allo specchio, si allontanava da se stesso e si riconosceva in Mr. Harvey. E’ stato questo a fargli prendere le distanze dal personaggio, un serial killer che non doveva trasformarsi in ‘icona pop’ o ‘cool’ come Hannibal Lecter, ma che rimanesse defilato, patetico e anonimo come certa carta da parati”.
Primo lavoro realizzato da Peter Jackson lontano dalla Nuova Zelanda (“dovevamo per forza di cose girare in Pennsylvania, dato che nel libro di Alice Sebold molti dei luoghi che vengono raccontati nascono dal ricordo diretto dell’autrice, anche se gli interni e la post produzione sono stati fatti in Nuova Zelanda”, spiega il regista), ‘Amabili resti’ potrebbe per alcuni versi ricordare ‘Creature del cielo’, che lo stesso Jackson realizzò nel 1994: “Quel film era basato su un vero omicidio avvenuto in Nuova Zelanda e molte idee le prendemmo dal diario di una delle vittime – dice il regista – mentre in questo caso ci siamo basati solo ed esclusivamente sul romanzo e sulla chiave di lettura piu’ affascinante, data dalla domanda che ogni essere umano, almeno una volta nella vita, si sarà posto: che cosa succede quando si muore? Che cosa accade dopo? Ovviamente non so dare una risposta, ma credo che in un modo o nell’altro ci sia una continuazione. Quello che conta, comunque, è che il film non vuole aprire dibattiti o proporre verita’ su questo tema, ma semplicemente rispettare quello che ogni opera di finzione dovrebbe prefiggersi, ovvero intrattenere il pubblico”.
Per farlo, Peter Jackson insiste molto sull’equilibrio tra il mondo terreno e l’ipotetico universo – immagini e colori che scaturiscono dai pensieri, dai sogni e dalle visioni di Susie – in cui la rimane sospesa l’esistenza della protagonista: “‘Amabili resti’ affronta un tema difficile e delicato – prosegue il regista – non solo imperniato sull’aldilà. Il film poteva essere grigio, deprimente, ma sarebbe stata una scelta troppo semplice, scontata. Abbiamo preferito trasparisse un’energia positiva, tale per cui Susie è come se non morisse mai, sopravvivesse in un’altra forma. In fondo, non è solamente la storia di un omicidio, ma anche un racconto che parla d’amore, attraverso il dolore e il cammino che è chiamata a compiere la famiglia di Susie per ritrovare la pace e capire che possono comunque continuare ad amare la figlia”.

Foram divulgados novos cartazes de  Um Olhar do Paraíso (The Lovely Bones),  novo filme de Peter Jackson. A produção é uma das mais esperadas de 2010 e conta a história de Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), uma menina de 14 anos que é estuprada e morta por  Harvey (Stanley Tucci), vizinho da família. A menina vai para o céu, onde começa a acompanhar a vida de  seus parentes, amigos e do próprio assassino. O filme é uma adaptação do romance Uma Vida Interrompida – Memórias de um Anjo Assassinado, de Alice Sebold.

Apesar de toda a expectativa em torno da produção, o filme já mereceu palavras duras da Variety e o chamou de “decepção artística”

“Jackson prejudica trabalho sólido a partir de um elenco bom, com show de evocações celeste que perturbam gravemente as ligações emocionais com os personagens”.

“O diretor tem o capricho de criar cenários em constante mudança que descrevem uma vida após a morte evocado de A noviça rebele, de  O mágico de Oz ,  O Pequeno Príncipe” ou Teletubbies.”

Estilo é estilo

Jackson é um bom diretor, não há como negar. Ele é capaz de contar histórias dramáticas como niguém, mas como todo diretor que se preze ele tem estilo próprio. Tim Burton, por exemplo, tem um estilo muito pessoal. Não é preciso esperar os créditos para saber que se está vendo uma produção dele. Com Jackson também é assim.

Quem teve a chance de assistir Almas Gêmas (de 1994 e que marca a estreia de Kate Winslet no cinema) também há de concordar que Jackson é simplesmente  viciado em fazer  filmes visualmente fortes. Uma história real de duas amigas envolvidas com um assassinato é simples demais para ele. Era preciso fazer com que a insanidade delas fosse exposta ao espectador. E ele fez. É esse o estilo de Jackson, razão pela qual ele estava tão apto a comandar a trilogia Senhor dos Anéis.

O problema do estilo meio megalomaníaco (isso não é uma crítica, de mofo algum) do diretor é o risco constante de errar a mão. Se passar do ponto a coisa desansa e é o que a Variety afirma que teria acontecido com Um Olhar do Paraíso.

É esperar para ver. O filme chega às salas brasileiras em 22 de janeiro. Enquanto isso, o trailer da produção nos dá algumas pistas.

The Lovely Bones se está haciendo de rogar, logrando ser una de esas tapadas que, pese a su reparto y director, llegan al final de la temporada sin hacer ruido para luego acaparar súbitamente toda la atención. La película a priori lo tiene todo para arrasar en los grandes premios, pero por lo que se empieza a escuchar, le sobrará competencia. Peter Jackson se pasa al drama (con toques sobrenaturales, y muchos efectos especiales, eso sí) con esta historia sobre una niña asesinada que se debate en el cielo entre ayudar a paliar el dolor de su familia o pararle los pies a su asesino. Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli y Saoirse Ronan forman el interesantísimo reparto principal de la cinta, que debuta el 11 de Diciembre.

The Previews!

As I sat waiting to watch New Moon this past weekend – I got a glimpse of three new movies that I’m excited to see.  Two of which include my favorite: Amanda Seyfried (from Mamma Mia!).

The first movie, Letters to Juliet caught me off guard- emotionally.  The film centers around the city of Verona, Italy – Juliet’s statue/balcony – and the letters of love addressed to Juliet.  I have once visited the city and saw Juliet’s statue a couple years ago, and the preview  reminded me of Verona’s beauty. I only wish I could go visit again!

The movie is due on in May 2010 – a perfect time of year to make a trip to Italy. . .

The other Seyfried movie, Dear John, is with Channing Tatum and is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel- so automatically we all know it will be a sob-fest.  Naturally, this movie is due out in February 2010 – near Valentine’s Day  – how fitting.

Be prepared to bring tissues to the theater.

Lastly, the novel The Lovely Bones written by Alice Sebold, is coming to the big screen – and I’m excited yet terrified to watch it.  The cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Saoirse Ronan (Atonement). The Lovely Bones has been one of those books that has both haunted and intrigued me.  Aspects of the book have stayed with me – in the corner of my mind – and that to me is what makes the book.  Having the ability to shock and remain with the reader demonstrates how powerful a well-written book can be.

The preview gives me goosebumps . . . its due out January 2010.

2010 looks like a promising year for the box office!

When The Lovely Bones was published in 2002 it took off like a shot, catapulting its author, Alice Sebold, high into literary stardom. This dark, wrenching novel of disquietude and loss is the story of Susie Salmon, a 12 year old girl who is raped and murdered in an underground den by a neighbor one afternoon when she takes a shortcut home from school. Susie narrates the story from a place of solitude – her own personal heaven – where she observes her grief-stricken, traumatized family as they come to terms with her death while searching for answers about the crime. She also watches as her killer evades justice. Written in spare, at times lyrical, at times graphic, prose, Sebold’s novel is unsettling in its evocation of a conflicted afterlife, as well as its depiction of a terrifying, brutal crime that tears a family apart.

Now, seven years after it appeared as a book, The Lovely Bones will be a film. The bestselling novel has been brought to filmic life by Peter Jackson, the director behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with an impressive cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, and the amazing young actress, Saoirse Ronan. It’s even scored by Brian Eno. Watch the trailer below. To me, it’s one of the most compelling, artful trailers I’ve seen in a long time, and promises a deeply emotional experience with a searching tone and eerie, almost painted, beauty to it.

This movie looks amazing and if the film adaptation is as good as the book; I really think “The Lovely Bones” can be a real Oscar contender!

Love has never been so passionate, damn evil little sisters.

When 13-year-old Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) discovers a lustful letter and witnesses a sexual encounter between her older sister (Keira Knightley) and a servant’s son (James McAvoy), her confusion prompts her to finger the young man for a violent crime.

This film is based on the Ian McEwan novel, that some have said is unfilmable, and might as well be after this, because no other film we be able to top this. This film drips with so much prestige you soon forget it ever had it in the first place.

This film is one of the more beautiful ones that I have seen of all time. Many of the colors change in order to show how different their relationship is turning out to be, and just right through these colors you can just feel the emotion pouring right out of the screen. There are some scenes in this film that are just mesmerizing of how their filmed. The set-pieces were really good looking and actually did look like it was in the 30’s, and last but not least there is just one amazing scene at Dunkirk in WWII, and basically that whole one scene just completes the whole film.

If there were any problems with this film was that its pace changes countless times and seems a little too all over the place. I also felt that this film was one of those very cliched romantic films based on just the simple words “I love you” to convey a new feeling of love and passionate emotion. Some lines in this film are very predictable, and it just seemed like another love story.

At the Oscars, Atonement won for Best Score, out of their other 6 nominations and to be truly honest I have no clue of how and why. I mean the score is unique but I just found it to be annoying at times mixing in the clicks on the keyboard and heavy breathing to mix in with the score.

The film is brilliantly-told through many different points of views. At some scenes I didn’t quite understand what was happening and then when I found out it actually explained a lot.

Between James McAvoy and Keira Knightley I couldn’t tell if they were going out or not. They really did feel like an actual true couple in this film. McAvoy plays the young servant’s son with such authenticity and anger that he just comes off as a really strong and true character and Keira Knightley gives one of her best performances yet, and shows she can’t be out acted. The really young Saorise Ronan actually does a good job and you can just feel sympathy for her as she doesn’t actually know what’s going on and she does do the best to her ability.

The film really does work with it’s central message. I felt that the ending was very effective and true and shows just how great a story can be, with enough emotional strife to add along. It shows how one little white lie, can change lives forever.

Consensus: Atonement features strong performances, a powerfully emotional story, and some really lovely shots, but ultimately falls too short of greatness, due to little misfires.

8.5/10=Matinee!!

Le prochain Peter jackson s’annonce quant même d’être une petite merveille. C’est sur que j’irais bien le voir celui la. Ensuite on aura droit à Tintin, mon dieu oO qu’est ce qu’il en a fait du chemin depuis Badtaste !

Le prochain film de Peter Jackson sortira en France le 27 janvier 2010, avec un casting plus qu’alléchant, à mon humble avis, puisqu’on retrouvera dans le rôle principal Saoirse Ronan (repérée dans Atonement/Reviens-Moi). Ses parents sont interprétés par Rachel Weisz et Mark Wahlberg, sa grand-mère par Susan Sarandon. Stanley Tucci est aussi de la fête puisqu’il interprète le meurtrier de Susie, l’héroïne du film (non, ceci n’est pas un spoiler).

L’histoire d’une jeune fille de quatorze ans, violée et tuée, et qui observe depuis le paradis les effets que se mort cause sur les membres de sa famille et de son entourage. Toujours à la recherche du corps de leur fille, ses parents s’écartent de plus en plus, son père devient obsédé par la vengeance et sa sœur se transforme progressivement en la femme qu’elle ne sera jamais.

Más allá de la ciudad se encuentran las Regiones Desconocidas, que nadie ha explorado todavía. Los habitantes de Las Ascuas han vivido confortablemente durante doscientos cincuenta años, mientras sus comercios han estado bien abastecidos. Pero llega un día en que poco a poco, dejan de estarlo; y para colmo las luces de las farolas y todos los focos empiezan a parpadear. Se preguntan qué pasará cuando el generador central, que funciona gracias a un río subterráneo, se estropee del todo. Lina, una niña de trece años, acaba de empezar a trabajar como mensajera, y ello le facilita el acceso a ciertos secretos.

OPINIÓN PERSONAL:

En idea original, la historia merece de nota un 9.

En película, de forma general, le daría un 6′5, (es solo mi opinión).

Los fallos que he encontrado han sido pocos pero han hecho que mi valoración sobre la película fuese bastante mala:

-No se le ha sacado todo el provecho posible a la idea (aunque está basada en un libro, en el que, espero, si hayan explotado al máximo la idea).

-Hay demasiadas escenas oscuras, así no se puede apreciar lo suficiente el mundo subterráneo en el que nos quiere sumergir la película.

-La historia se desarrolla tan apresurada que no da tiempo a conocer a todos los personajes, salvo a los dos protagonistas.

Por lo demás, esta es una gran película y se la recomiendo a todos aquellos que tengan tiempo libre y no se decidan que película quieren ver.
