We have a friend who just loves to organise elaborate weekends away and on this occasion we packed our overnight bags and made our way to Falls Creek in the beautiful alpine region of Victoria, Australia.

Those of you not familiar with Australia, may be surprised to know that we have an alpine region and although it’s most frequently visited during the winter months, during the rest of the year it attracts bushwalkers, downhill bikers and in our case FEASTERS.

Feasts offer an opportunity to give the friends in our lives and the food on our plates the kind of time and attention that often goes amiss in the day-to-day busy-ness of life.

Add to this a crazy amount of food and wine, free massages and hookah and you’ve got a party.

Not wanting to see jelly left off the menu, we needed to create a special treat.

Known as the King of Berries we were inspired by the late season punnets of ruby red and plump raspberries at our local market; which we suspended in a Raspberry infused vodka cosmopolitan mix.

Who could refuse these mouthfuls of pure indulgence?

At Shot-Tails Jelly Shots we’ve been surprised by how often people ask if they can eat the little wooden plates our delicious jelly shots are served on.

So this got us thinking; what if the entire Jelly Shot was edible? An Edible Cocktail!!!

Fancy, Wobbly, Tasty | Biodegradable | Less washing up afterwards

Now that was an idea that needed further research and development but we were quick to get results and we popped out our first sample; the French Mojito Jelly Shot.

For the French Mojito Jelly Shot we infused the white rum with fresh mint leaves, sensuously stirred in smack of fresh lime-juice and a bisous of Elderflower liqueur and presented this sophisticated and sultry twist on the traditional Mojito on a beautiful mint leaf.

The result, like our Jelly Shots, was mixed. We all agreed they looked fantastic and the French Mojito Jelly Shot was delicieux but the mint leaf… well some thought it was really tasty others however found it a little too leafy.

We love getting feedback and exploring new ideas and the Edible Cocktail is work in progress but we’re confident it will be a hit with some refinements.

What do you think of our Edible Cocktail: French Mojito Jelly Shot?

At Shot-Tails Jelly Shots we are committed to the principle of EEO.

EEO you ask? That’s right, Equal Enjoyment Opportunities for everyone including our lovely vegetarian and vegan friends who enjoy a jelly shot as much as the rest of us.

Driven by EEO and our Shot Tails jelly shot motto, Fancy, Wobbly, tasty, we began experimenting in our jelly-shot-kitchen. We take this stuff seriously you know, it’s not all champagne and sunshine.

Our goal? To create the most perfect vegetarian-friendly Shot-Tail jelly shot that everyone can enjoy.

We quickly discovered this was no small task; in fact it was an adventure full of intrigue, mishaps and teamwork. We began, like all good adventures do, on the web and advice from jelly shot pros from around the world pointed us towards the veggie jelly alternative Agar Agar.

No that wasn’t a stutter, Agar Agar is actually the Malay name for a flavourless gelling agent, derived from cooked and pressed red algae from which the jelly is produced and is a popular replacement for gelatine, especially desserts in Asia.

In the jelly-shot-kitchen we enthusiastically produced our first Agar Agar Shot-Tail jelly shot. The result: fancy, not wobbly, not-so-tasty. While holding its shape beautifully, instead of that delightful silky and soft sensation you get from jelly, we experienced a crumbly and slightly hard texture.

Not easily discouraged we experimented with pectin (too soft), pectin + Agar Agar (too weird) and then we discovered VegeSet;
“a vegetarian setting agent suitable for both sweet and savoury dishes that sets completely clear”. Accompanied by an encouraging tweet from Paul McCartney, we knew we were on to something good.

With VegeSet and Agar Agar in hand and more tireless nights in the jelly-shot-kitchen ensued. Using only the best methods in food science (a little bit of this, taste – meh; a little bit of that, taste – yum) we successfully created the most Fancy, Wobbly, Tasty Apple Martini Shot-Tail jelly shot imaginable. Success!

Or was it? Committed as we are to excellence, we garnered the expert opinion of our friends at a high-tea picnic last weekend. Our reputations as purveyors of fancy, wobbly, tasty were at stake.

Tension built amidst the beautiful surrounds of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens as the veggie-friendly Apple Martini Jelly Shots were passed amongst the picnic-goers. The unanimous response from veggies and non-veggies, alike:

“I can’t believe it’s not gelatine.”

Case closed: EEO for all!!!

Keep an eye out for our new range of vegetarian Shot-Tails jelly shots as we extend our product offering in this exciting new direction.

OK, then there are other times when the interweb serves up nothing but fortune…behold, the Sep. / Oct. 2010 issue of Fiasco Magazine featuring Ford Men’s Isaac Weber in an editorial photographed by Christian Rios and styled by Raul Guerrero. I’ve yet to get my paws all over this issue and out of necessity have settled for an otherwise fine digital version. In a departure from Isaac’s Hero cover story by Doug Inglish the 6’1″ (185 cm) American goes all monochromatic wearing pieces from the Calvin Klein menswear F/W 10 collection and a pair of goggles courtesy of the stylist. The Ford Models Blog last saw Isaac in early July with his appearance on PRODn, the Art + Commerce blog.

Please visit Fiasco Magazine online to see this editorial and the rest of the Sep. / Oct. 2010 issue. Also please visit the site of Christian Rios to see more of his fine photography.
