It was primarily down to one lady, Lisa Gerrard, who’s new album more than tripled the hits of the second placed artist.

In her native Canada, singer-songwriter Sarah Slean is an award-winning star whose last album charted in the Top 10 and who regularly performs in respectably large venues to adoring fans. Over the course of her six studio albums and over a decade of shows, she’s developed a reputation as a spellbinding, intelligent performer with a talent to be reckoned with. Never heard of her? The fact that she has never toured Europe once in all that time might have something to do with that. She’s visited, briefly, with a couple of concerts in Paris many years ago, but as far as Wears The Trousers is aware, she has never once played a gig in the UK.

Well, it looks like that is going to change in the new year as a listing has appeared on the website for London venue The Borderline for a Sarah Slean gig on February 2, as one of two support acts for Nashville duo The Bittersweets (the other is Royal Wood). Tickets are on sale now, priced only £9 + booking fee. Hopefully some more European dates will surface soon. For now though, clear your diaries. This is not to be missed!

Sarah Slean and the Art of Time Ensemble (led by pianist Andrew Burashko) I am now a firm believer i

Sarah Slean and the Art of Time Ensemble (led by pianist Andrew Burashko)

I am now a firm believer in the idea of art & music being restorative to the soul. All week I grind away at college trying to make heads or tails out of the complex 3D Animation software program I am learning, where confusing numbers, ratios, grid patterns and endless menu options make my head swim. I swear that I come home with a headache 9 times out of 10 after attending my morning college class. And the fact that each class is 5 hours long just makes things more headache inducing. So last night it was a treat to attend a performance of semi-classical music with The Art of Time Ensemble featuring Sarah Slean. The project takes 12 hand-picked (by Sarah) songs, from Canadian musicians and reinterprets them using classical and jazz influenced arrangements. The result: gorgeous music that could/would/should soothe any savage beast. Standout songs last night included Leonard Cohen’s Dress Reheasal Rag and Mary Margaret O’Hara’s To Cry About. And there were even two classical pieces that were thrown in to bookend the intermission. One a violin concerto by Beethoven and the other a modern work by a Canadian composer. Sweet sounds. And better than an Advil!

The newly opened Koerner Hall (no photos allowed during the performance)

The other great thing about attending last night’s performnace was that I finally got a chance to see the newly designed Koerner Hall at The Royal Conservatory of Music (on Bloor St. right beside the ROM). And the hall is spectacular! Intimate but with a good capacity, comfortable seats, great sound, great sightlines, tasteful decor… you couldn’t ask for anything more. But we did anyway. You see I went last night to the show with my pal Scott (also a Sarah Slean die-hard fan), and we simply waited in the lobby by the ticket booth till someone with too many tickets on their hands offered up a seat to give away. And it worked for both of us. We didn’t get to sit together, but we both got in au gratis! I knew the place wouldn’t be sold out, and I also knew there would be some seat padding going on, so I figured there was bound to be some unclaimed tickets come showtime. I know the system and how to work it. Plus I am totally broke these days. I would love to pay for the arts, but for now all I can pay is “attention”.

Julianne Moore ruled the TIFF roost this year with three, count them, three films each, while celebrated runners-up George Clooney, Colin Firth and Amands Seyfried each appeared in two TIFF entries. All of which is true, except for two guys I forgot to mention. Don’t know how I missed him, but Willem Dafoe also deserved to be in that top spot with Colin and Julianne, as he appeared in no less than three TIFF titles this year: Antichrist, Daybreakers and Farewell. Sorry about that, Willem. And yes, Paul Bettany, who played Charles Darwin in the opening night film Creation and Lord Melbourne in the closing night film Young Victoria, should have been listed with Clooney, Firth and the young Ms Seyfried in second place. And yes, I’m just hoping I didn’t miss anyone else.

PLAYBOY OF THE EASTERN FILM FESTIVAL: After three capacity crowds jammed the TIFF cinemas where her much-discussed documentary on Hugh Hefner premiered last week, director Brigitte Berman admitted that

BENNETT: talking about Hef

by the time she finished shooting she had an embarrassment of riches, and had to delete scenes she loved from the original version to bring the film to a more manageable size. Deletions included interviews with the magazine magnate’s two sons, and the stories they tell about how they were treated in high school as Hugh Hefner’s offspring are apparently so fascinating that Berman intends to include that footage as a separate feature when the film is released on DVD. At a Q&A after the film she informed us that Playboy is the second best-known brand in the world — “Coca-Cola is number one,” she added — and that the toughest interview subject to secure, surprisingly, was Tony Bennett. “His agent is very protective of him, as he should be. But as soon as Tony was told of the request, he was all for it, and just a pleasure to work with.”

Did any key players from Hef’s past actually turn her down? ”Yes,” replied the ever-candid Oscar-winning director — “Gloria Steinem, Jules Pfeiffer and Bill Cosby.”

WHO WON WHAT: As T.O. filmfest chief Piers Handling noted on Saturday night, TIFF delivered not only 335 films but also 10 days of consecutive sunshine – “the summer we did not have.” But thanks to superb programming, meticulous planning and the more than 2,000 volunteers (!!) who help make it happen, it was truly a festival to remember.

It is a still morning. Crisp air hints at the coming of the autumn and winter to come. The sky is grey, yet bright. This rendition of Pie Jesu (a hymn usually included in the Roman Catholic mass for the deceased) sounds out through the windows and doors.
I’m writing this post for several reasons, the first being that I’m sure you guys are SO

I’m writing this post for several reasons, the first being that I’m sure you guys are SO interested in my musical taste (notice the sarcasm in that sentence?). The second, of course, is that I really have nothing else to write about. Well, that’s not completely true. I have some topics rolling around in my brain, but since it’s 12:15 at night I really don’t want to write about anything too thought-provoking. So instead, here’s a handy list of some songs I’ve really been enjoying lately. If you have some extra iTunes money, why not check these out?

Honey Please by Heathers
Oh, the things you can do with two voices and an acoustic guitar. The harmonies in this song are amazing. Gives me goosebumps each time!

They All Surrounded Me by Eisley
Okay, so I have TON of Eisley songs (they’re my favorite band, after all), but I bought this semi-recently, so I thought I’d put it on the list. It’s such a creative song- I love the irony in the lyrics.

Kaleidescope Machine by Katie Costello
The fact that this girl wrote the song and is still a teenager is mind-boggling. It’s an amazing song that never fails to cheer me up.

The Calculation by Regina Spektor
You should check out Regina’s entire new album, “Far”. Besides “The Calculation”, my favorites include “Human of the Year” and “Eet”. All in all, it’s really a great album.

Modern Nature by Sondre Lerch
I’ve recently really gotten into Sondre Lerch, and this song is absolutely adorable. I love how they use both male and female vocals. I discovered this song through the movie Dan in Real Life- apparently Sondre composed most of the soundtrack. It’s especially cute for a movie soundtrack, so I suggest giving it a try!

All This Beauty by The Weepies
I’m a HUGE Weepies fan, so I guess it’s only natural that I love this song. The lyrics are so bright and descriptive.

Sweet Ones by Sarah Slean
I’m currently sounding this one out on the piano. It’s such a quirky song and kind of has a cabaret feel. I always sing along. XD

500 Miles (I’m Gonna Be) by The Proclaimers
Yet another song I discovered through a movie (the movie in question being Benny and Joon, one of my favorite movies in the entire world). It’s one of my all-time favorites!

Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne
Yes, I’m also pretty into older songs as well. This is probably thanks to my parents, of course. Anyways, I love the piano in this song! Upbeat piano tunes always make me especially happy.

Always A Bridesmaid by The Good Life
Hey look! Another upbeat piano tune! I’ve been meaning to work this out on the piano, but I’ve never really gotten around to it. Oh well… maybe eventually.

Frozen by Tegan and Sara
This is definitely one of their older songs, but it’s still great (like anything this band does). Definitely give it a look-see (but is that possible with music…?)!

Paper Bag by Fiona Apple
I love the bluesy feel to the song. No, scratch that. I love Fiona Apple in general (most of the time).

Comme des enfants by Coeur de pirate
Yes, the lack of capitolization was on purpose. But anyways, I’m head over heels with this song, despite the fact that it’s in French (and I’m really bad at French). It’s kind of awkward when I try to sing along, but that doesn’t stop me!

Don’t Wake Me Up by The Hush Sound
This was the first Hush Sound song I ever heard, and to this day it remains my favorite. Unfortunately the band is taking a “break”, which makes for a very sad Cocoa. Oh, and Michael Jackson is dead! Music is dying…

It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me by Billy Joel
Billy Joel is one of my favorite artists, and “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me” is probably my favorite song by him, even though the rest of my family is partial to “Vienna”. I love that song as well, but it doesn’t compare!

Expiration Date by Pomplamoose
Why is it that virtually nobody has heard of Pomplamoose (youtube.com/pomplamoosemusic)? They’re positively fabulous! Go look them up. Now.

Ievan Polkka by Loituma
Yes, this is the song featured in the leekspin video on YouTube. Yes, I have it on my iPod. It’s addictive… DON’T JUDGE ME!

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? by She and Him
I love Zooey Deschanel, and when I found out she had a band (with M. Ward, of all people!) I was quite happy. When I found out that I liked her music even more than her movies, I was ecstatic.

Handkerchiefs by Winterpills
It’s an incredibly sad song (it makes me teary!), but I love it nonetheless. It always helps me calm down.

Thinking, Drinking, Sinking, Feeling by Slow Club
Yes, this is the song on the Lays commercial! I love the ending when all the horns come in.

Wow, that was really long, wasn’t it? I’m tempted to add more to the list, but I’m sure you all have much better things to do. So good night, America! I think I’m going to turn in. We’re shooting some scenes for drama tomorrow, and I want to look somewhat rested!

June missed being our most busiest month by just 21 hits so March 09 still holds the crown of busiest month – however for the first time ever one artist completely outrun everyone else by such a margin, their top post (our most viewed post this month) had more hits than the second, third and fourth busiest posts combined! Well done the Imogen Heap – everyone’s gone mad over the tracklist for Ellipse and we’ll be buying the album on release day so expect a sharp review on the day (provided its in shops – we couldn’t get a copy for Speak For Yourself in a store and had to buy online and wait). Patrick Wolf, Dead Can Dance & Vienna Teng’s album reviews all followed behind. Here’s the top 10 artists followed by the only two game reviews on site (we will be doing a top 5 game hits too). Congrats to Lisa Germano for making a new entry and Tori Amos, number 1 last month, dropped straight back out the charts again! June should be a busy month with lots of reviews not just here, but over on new site I Love Disaster Movies, which is another personal indulgence to another hobby of mine! Enjoy the summer!

Art Of Time Ensemble featuring Sarah Slean
Black Flowers •••
Pheromone

A collaboration between Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Slean and classical musicians collectively known as the Art Of Time Ensemble, the concept behind Black Flowers has its origins in a two-night live residency held in May 2007 at Toronto’s Enwave Theatre. Appropriating songs from the contemporary Canadian songbook, Slean and her crew went about fashioning completely new versions of songs by her compatriots. Taking in such diverse artists as Feist, Leonard Cohen, Ron Sexsmith and Lynn Miles, Slean and Art Of Time Ensemble director Andrew Burashko have managed to craft a rather coherent studio set, utilising Slean’s main instrument, the piano, and weaving it around inspired classical arrangements by her classical cohorts. Not particularly well known outside Canada, Slean’s debut Blue Parade was released independently in 1998, and she has since put out another three albums, perhaps the most far-reaching of which was last year’s The Baroness. Although she is distinctly her own person with a unique voice, to help contextualise her musically think fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, and also, indirectly, singers kd lang and Madeleine Peyroux, whose jazz-infused sound this album adopts.

Black Flowers is bookended by two Leonard Cohen songs, ‘Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye’ from his 1967 debut Songs Of Leonard Cohen, and ‘Dress Rehearsal Rag’ from 1971’s Songs Of Love & Hate, and they are arguably the strongest of the nine tracks on offer. The former adds strings and double bass to Slean’s piano, adding a warm depth of sound that the sparser original does not have, and Slean really has a chance to show off her vocals. However, and this is a pervasive problem on the album, some instrumentalists (the saxophone here, and on other songs the offender is a soprano clarinettist) are a somewhat dated and unwelcome addition to the arrangements, perhaps giving them an undeservedly naff quality. ‘Dress Rehearsal Rag’ keeps things simple and close to Cohen’s arrangement of sparse guitar, but also adds flourishes of piano and strings. Although it lacks the desperation of Cohen’s version (the song is about a nervous breakdown), Slean brings a compelling drama to proceedings. Again, that soprano clarinet is back, but can’t quite ruin things.

Other highlights on the album include the title track, originally by folk singer Lynn Miles. Against a backdrop of mournful strings and acoustic guitar, Slean expertly tells this sad, pastoral story of a love lost forever. ‘I’ll Never Tear You Apart’s pizzicato piano chords, double bass and interweaving strings completely reinvigorate Martin Tielli’s original, while ‘Dandelion Wine’ is all string quartet and guitar and only enhances the brilliance of Ron Sexsmith’s expert songwriting. John Southworth’s ‘Eyes Are The Flowers’ again uses only the sparsest of arrangements, first with string quartet then delicate piano. Another highlight comes with Feist’s ‘Monarch’, the title track from her little known pre-fame debut, which is marvellously given a sonic overhaul with piano scales and strings, where Slean once again gets to showcase those vocal chords.

Black Flowers is really an example of what a good covers album should be, with brave and inventive arrangements and an expert choice of songs that possess an internal logic, and will surely hold its own among Slean’s impressive canon of self-penned works.

i often take pictures with my phone with the thought that i will later blog about them. as you may already be thinking, that rarely happens so now i’m putting them all up at once. hurrah!

this one is taken from the east-side wall of savoy. there used to be quite a cool piece of graffiti featuring heath ledger as the joker that incidentally my friend amber was mildly obsessed with. this person was obviously not amused by its removal.

this is the spot on whyte where southside sound used to reside until it went out of business a couple of weeks ago and now vivid print is preparing to open. some of you may recall that i blogged vivid print ages ago. they are fantastic and therefore this is good news, despite the obvious flaw that i’m moving in less than a week.

this picture comes from a fantastic night out on my last visit to calgary. after closing out twisted, kathryne, laura and i headed to tubby dog where we arrived just in time for last orders. incidentally, when asked for a name, we chose simply ‘vagina’ and then when our dogs were ready the (it has to be said FANTASTIC) tubby dog employee yelled out ‘VADGE’ to the assembled throng of late night hot dog enthusiasts. brilliant.

this is from the empress on their most recent beers for queers night during pride week. the poster is from their pride float which was an old school bus done up like a hippy van with protesters holding signs inside; one of whom was presumably not wearing any pants. we did go to the pride parade (a first for jo-ann and myself) but we ended up just bee-lining for the beer gardens (queer gardens?) and watching the parade arrive at the finish. it was fantastic, obviously.

this is a picture of the view from the roof of the business building where i had class a few times during the spring semester. class on the roof is amazing.

i had to snap a picture of this as i walked by. one has to support fellow recessionistas and as you all know, i’ve been rocking the discman, recessionista style.

this was in the paper and i just love the headline. THE DAYS OF SMILY AND NODDING ARE OVER! hysterical.

this was in the garbage room at work. could there be a more disgusting description for a tub full of fat? it’s probably from fucking chili’s where it seems as though everything on the menu has been through the deep-fryer at one point or another. speaking of chili’s, when it first opened jo-ann and i decided to give it a try on three separate occasions, enjoying none of them, and wondering on each subsequent occasion why we’d gone back after disliking it on the previous one and then two occasions. obviously, we became angry at both chili’s and ourselves for stupidly returning to a restaurant have never liked. we have a pact never to return to chili’s

this is a sign from the west edmonton mall transit centre. now i’m sorry but isn’t the act of waiting for a bus at least a little similar to loitering? this seems like a ridiculous and unenforceable rule. surely if someone accused you of loitering you could just say that you were waiting for a bus. isn’t the point of bus terminal for you to loiter until the arrival of a bus?

and this has been my life in pictures for the last few months.

This will change in June with an action packed month ahead! Here’s the top 10:
