We are three Christian women in our early twenties, in three different stages in our walk with Christ. Our mission is to show that it is possible to have fun and be happy all the while serving the Lord. We hope to reach young Christians, those who are confused as well as just anyone who would like to know our opinions on certain things and our beliefs. I am 22 years old, student who has taken a year off, writer, and I just began my walk with Christ. As you will find out on Tuesday in my testimony, my life was really rocky. Thanks to God, I am out of that time in my life and moving on to a brighter future. I am an English major and hope to publish book in the near future, either poetry or any sort of creative writing. I love to write and read- which may seem like I am a nerd, but I enjoy doing it. In my blog I have showcased some of my poetry, which to me is a form of therapy. Sarai:

I’m 21 years old and a single mother to an amazing four year old boy. I accepted Jesus on August 2006 but decided to change who I was and give myself completely to Him about a year later. I’m currently on break from school because of financial issues. My main career goal is to help homeless families as well as prevent as many abortions as possible. We’ll see what God has planned. I’m also a writer. I enjoy writing stories, quotes and poems about God, love, family, friends and just about anything that comes to mind. A dream of mine is to publish a book or two or ten.  I also blog/vlog about random things, one of the topics being weight loss. Given all that we know about the story that unfolds in the history of the descendents of Abraham, the reference to going ‘down to Egypt’ (Gen 12:10) is ominous, surely.

The covenant promise had been restated in 12:6, with the first direct reference to the actual land that God had intended in the first promise. And it wasn’t Egypt. The text also leads us to understand that Abraham has some sort of a religious experience and worships God between Bethel and Ai.

And yet at the first sign of lack he emigrates. He leaves the land of the promise for the land the engineer, and in so doing he takes to himself the task of engineering his own security. Seeking only self-preservation and he effectively sells Sarai to secure his own safety.

So many times I’ve heard this story referred to and preached but only as a bump in the road that leads inexorably to Abraham’s sainthood. This was a challenge to faith in which he didn’t cover himself in glory but thankfully he learned from the disobedience.

Never once have I heard this story from the perspective of Sarai. What did it feel like to be chattel? To be involved in an abusive relationship where one’s personal integrity could be traded so callously? What was it like to be utterly at the whim of someone more powerful who was not slow to exercise that power in self-interest?

In order to get around the moral difficulties this passage poses, I’ve heard all sorts of explanations for what ‘taken into (Pharoah’s) palace’ (Gen 12:15) means. Even some of the commentators explain it as ‘she was introduced’ to Pharoah – like Pharoah had a garden party and Sarai’s reward for trading her virtue was an invite to meet a powerful man.

The word ‘taken’ is often used in the context of marriage and of all that follows, and though it is not explicit in the passage surely this is the intent. Pharaoh had sex with Sarai. Sarai was forced into an adulterous relationship by her husband, but who is really being unfaithful here?

Abraham’s moral cowardice is staggering, and it begins when he packs up and leaves the Promised Land, and the ‘going down’ to Egypt describes a moral and ethical descent to terrible depths.

And Sarai’s helplessness and powerlessness is heartbreaking.

Then we’ve got to cope with something else in the story. Abraham profits hugely from his deception.

Not only that, but Pharoah’s household suffers terrible diseases. (Pharoah does too, but then we might argue that he also exercises power callously, taking a woman just because he could. But at least he thought she was unmarried.)

Where is the justice in the story?

Abraham emerges embarrassed but with greatly enhanced material wealth. Nothing is said about Sarai (though Jewish tradition fills in a little bit, adding that whilst in Pharaoh’s harem she met Hagar – but more of that later).

What was it like in their bed the first night out of Egypt and heading back to famine-ravaged Canaan? What ground did the conversation cover? How was Sarai’s spirit damaged by the experience of being bought and sold by wealthy men? Can it go some way towards explaining her later behaviour towards Abraham?

There are a lot more layers to this story than might be realised. And they’re real layers. It’s not the first time a man used a women to his own ends. Not the first time spouses were faithless. And the reality is also that when this kind of things happens the consequences are not confined to the principal characters. Many innocent people suffer the impact of my faithlessness, my inability to hold to a covenant.

In Genesis 16 Sarai is in the place of Abraham, and he plays the role of the Pharaoh. In the face of a pressing need, childlessness this time, she presents an innocent, powerless woman to the powerful Patriarch in a painful echo of her experience in Gen 12.

Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant and gave her to her husband to be his wife. (Gen 16:3)

Just look at the complex of relationships his wife…her maidservant…her husband…his wife.

Has Sarai learned from her husband’s pragmatic, self-interested behaviour? Or is this revenge? When the trap is laid she turns on Abraham and blames him for her predicament. Has this resentment been stored up for years and years? In front of Abraham she claims to have ‘put my servant in your arms’, but earlier it was clearly stated she gave Hagar as a wife.

Just as in the previous example of spousal abuse Abraham is silent and it all happens around him. Is this because he had already surrendered the moral high ground by what he did in Egypt? Here, he limply hands the outcomes to Sarai to do as she pleases with Hagar. ‘Do what you think is best’ he says, but we already know that neither of them are prone to good judgment and decision making.

Past hurts and wounds are raw and continue to control present behaviour.

And what of Hagar in all of this?

“Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev… he went on his journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.”  Genesis 13:1-4

Many people today read scripture without asking questions of the text.  If we don’t stop to consider the motives of the people we are reading about, we may miss the bigger picture.  Genesis 12:1 – 13:4 is a story of reconciliation.  I am not sure why those who determined where the chapters should begin and end in the modern bible did not end chapter 12 here, as it brings the early part of our story with Abram full-circle.  If we think this portion of the text is about how God calls Abram, he goes to Canaan, takes a little trip down to Egypt and has a run-in with Pharaoh, but then goes on his way, we are missing the story!  See my previous postings for more details.

There is spiritual significance to many of the events between the time Abram is called by God in 12:1 and his return to the altar in 13:4.  Abram’s decision to go to Egypt in and of itself was not necessarily wrong or sinful.  It is true that we don’t know if God intended him to go to Egypt for provision or if God would have provided in Canaan despite the famine.  However, Abram’s decision to lie about Sarai being his sister was a sin.  Instead of trusting God for protection, Abram feared the Egyptians and sought to protect himself at the expense of the safety of his wife.  And like any lie, we see the trouble that ensues culminating in the confrontation with Pharaoh.  This seemingly simple lie on Abram’s part could have caused Pharaoh to commit the much greater sin of adultery.  It also resulted in unjust gain to Abram.

If we read what Abram did matter-of-factly, or don’t look at what he did as really lying or otherwise doing anything wrong, we miss the significance of the ending of this part of the story: the return to the altar.  In fact, the text refers to the place where Abram had his tent “at the beginning”.  This is speaking of the spiritual life of Abram and its new beginning with God, as Abram’s actual beginning would be back in Ur of the Chaldeans which is now the past.  Some translations even speak of Abram ‘descending’ to Egypt, in contrast to him ascending back to a better spiritual condition after the ordeal.

This interpretation shows us that when when we lie, we must go back to the time and  place before we sinned to set things right with God again – back to the place of the altar to call upon the name of the LORD – before we can move forward again spiritually.

God calls Abram, and by faith he goes to Canaan.  Upon arrival he builds altars there, but then what?  Now that he is in Canaan, he has these great promises from God, but does he know if he is going to see any fruit himself?  It is as if Abram was saying “Now what God?  I followed you here, but what I see is a famine.  I hear things are good in Egypt (a humanistic representation of the world) so I will go there for a time (just until this famine is over!)”  Then on the way, Abram makes a compromise; he realizes the danger of having a very beautiful (though 65 year old) wife, and he makes the decision to lie, potentially putting his wife in great danger to spare his own life.

Then what unfolds shows the mysterious nature and unexpected grace from God.  Though Abraham lied, God saw fit that he was blessed abundantly, despite his sin.  This probably made him feel quite guilty about lying in the first place.  Also, God seemed to have protected Sarai as well, bringing great plagues upon Pharoah and his house on her account.  How do you think Abram will feel when he finds out that some calamity came upon Pharaoh ultimately because of his lie?  God had a fervent jealousy for Abram and his wife, and their marriage.  And so God delivers Abram out of the situation, out of Egypt, and back on his way to Canaan, safely and with many goods in hand.

How would Abram feel at this point?  There may be a telling silence and a chance to repent, or speak up, during his encounter with Pharaoh: “What is this you have done to me?” No answer.  ”Why did you not tell me she was your wife?”  No answer.  ”Why did you say “She is my sister,” so that I took her for my wife?  Again, no answer.  Abram cannot speak because he is probably embarrassed, ashamed, and confused, though glad to be alive and glad to be getting his wife back.

This can be a picture of a new believer coming to Christ, only to step into the Promised Land and fail to see the bigger picture. God calls us, in essence, away from our earthly family (those who do not believe in God,) because conversion sets you apart and can make you feel alone from your own flesh and blood.  This is why we seek the church as our new family.  Then during a famine, be it spiritual, financial or otherwise, we turn back to the worldly way of doing things again, the path to which is filled with danger and compromise.

But God’s grace is more than sufficient here.  Instead of allowing Abraham to sojourn in the world a while, or danger to befall him or his wife, he ends up escorted back out of Egypt bearing even more property and servants.  Do you think God was trying to show him something?  Not that he would be rewarded for lying, but instead Abram is left to consider that he should have simply trusted God in the first place which would have avoided this whole ordeal.  Abram would also be understanding the mercy of God, that God Himself would intervene on his behalf, and strike with plagues the most powerful man in Egypt on account of keeping him and his wife safe, and to get them out of Egypt, where he did not want them.

This is not the first time Egypt will be sought as a refuge during a time of famine, and also not the last time Egypt would be left with spoils in hand.  And Even Egypt is not immune to famine as we see later in Genesis.  This whole event prefigures what is to come with the Israelites.  Likewise, spiritually speaking, this event prefigures what happens quite commonly to us as Christians.

And where does Abram go as he sheepishly leaves Egypt?  Gen 13:4 “to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.”  And so with God’s kindness and mercy, He calls us back to Himself.

“Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife?  Now then, here is your wife, take her and go.”  Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.”  Gen. 12:19-20

With such few details in the narrative it is easy to either overlook Pharaoh’s character, especially if we are more concerned with Abram and Sarai.  However it really is difficult to ignore this event considering the context and expected outcome, which does not happen.  We have Abram, who decides to sojourn to Egypt on account of the famine in Canaan.  Abram has a concern about the Egyptians with respect to his wife’s beauty to the point where he is afraid the Egyptians will kill him.   Abram was correct in that his wife’s beauty was so highly regarded that Pharaoh’s official’s took her to him, and essentially gave Abram payment for Sarai.

So far Abram’s judgment of the Egyptians seems correct.  They did find his wife beautiful, and they did take her, but have spared his life.  However God intervenes and sends plagues upon both Pharaoh and his house.  Considering that Pharaoh is a very powerful man, and probably does not know the God of Abram, what would we expect to happen at this point, if we did not know the outcome of this story?  It would not be unreasonable to think that Pharaoh, who seems to have made the connection between Sarai and the plagues, would drive her away at the very least, or worse have her killed.  Even if the fear of God were upon him and he let Sarai go safely, what is his concern with Abram at all at this point?  In his eyes, Abram had done him wrong by deceiving him and had received material wealth in return!  Most certainly we would expect Pharaoh would have him killed or maybe thrown into prison.  But this is not what happens.

Instead Pharaoh calls Abram to have a face to face conversation.  Pharaoh is showing a great deal of restraint; he is one of the most powerful people in the world at the time confronting the man who deceived him. But yet Abram and Sarai walk away from the incident unharmed.  Not only unharmed, but even protected by the men that would likely wish to harm them (Pharaoh’s men), and to top it all off, their possessions are all still in hand.    Surely Pharaoh would have demanded back the multitude of sheep, oxen, donkeys and servants he gave Abram!  But Pharaoh did not.

Was the hand of God against Pharaoh?  Yes.  Did Abram misjudge Pharaoh’s character?  Yes.  Look at the words of Pharaoh’s questions to Abram: “Why did you not tell me she was your wife?”  ”Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife?  Now then, here is your wife, take her and go.”  There is a certain restrained poise to his words;  it is as if he is speaking to Abram as a person showing his reasonableness, not a powerful ruler.  It would seem that, though Pharaoh may have desired a beautiful woman such as Sarai at his side, he was not willing to cross the boundary of adultery, much less kill Abram as Abram feared.  It is almost as if his words to Abram are humbly showing Abram that he has in fact misjudged his character.  You can almost feel the regret of Abram, as he realizes the trouble he has brought upon Pharaoh and his house, not to mention troubling God to intervene because of his actions, realizing this may have all been for naught.  Perhaps he should have just told the truth, but instead he allowed his fear, combined with his preconceived notions about Pharaoh and the Egyptians (and perhaps even pride about his wife’s beauty) to dictate his actions.

This portion of scripture is as much about God’s intervention to protect Sarai as it is about judging our perceived enemies motives.

“Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.” Gen. 12:13

When Abraham makes the decision to sojourn in Egypt due to the famine in Canaan, along the way he quickly realizes a problem; his wife Sarai is extremely beautiful.  This is a problem because he is entering the land of Pharaoh, a man who he presumably reaps where he does not sow, and the people of Egypt are not known for their good morals.  Abraham has a serious concern that he will be killed and his wife taken.  So what does he do?  He asks his wife to lie about their marriage.

There is speculation as to whether Sarai was actually his half-sister or not, (Gen. 20:12) however the point is that they were actually married (Gen. 11:29) and Abraham was putting his wife in potential danger, which if nothing else could have resulted in unintentional infidelity on her part.  Just read how the author of Genesis speaks of the plagues brought upon Pharaoh and his house:  “But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.” This tells us that, at least in the eyes of the author, the marital relationship supersedes any familial relationship.

We do not know for certain if Pharaoh actually laid with her or not; however, Rashi asserts that the plagues brought upon Pharaoh by God were designed to prevent cohabitation for the purpose of keeping Sarai safe.  It would seem that God was more willing than Abraham to protect their marriage and his wife’s sanctity.

So what did Sarai say when Abram asked her to lie?  Nothing.  At least, no words of hers are recorded throughout the entire ordeal.  We get the impression that she silently nodded perhaps; and this even knowing what Abraham was saying was probably true about the Egyptians and their sexual tendencies.  Certainly this is something she did not want to do.  But this display of silent obedience speaks volumes, as it shows that her willingness to obey her husband is ultimately what procured safety for both of them.  Even if Abraham’s moral judgment may have been in error, God Himself intervened to protect her (Gen. 12:17).  Some may say this was on account of Abraham’s righteousness; I would say it was on account of her display of submission to her husband. My reasoning is that through this point in the narrative, the outstanding trait of Abram is not his righteousness – that word has not been used to describe him at all yet; but rather, his willingness to listen to the calling of God, who called him from his father’s house to a land God would show him.

The obedience of Sarai is an important element in the early stages of Abram and Sarai’s walk of faith together, as their marriage symbolizes what married couples today should strive for:  For the husband to be willing to respond to the call of God in faith, and for the woman to strive for obedience to her husband, knowing that even if he is not perfect, ultimately God is in control.

The Angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.”

Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.”

And the Angel of the LORD said to her:
“ Behold, you are with child,
And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
Because the LORD has heard your affliction.
He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”

Hagar has been cast off by Sarai after acting too “uppity”. But God comforts Hagar with the knowledge that her child will, like Abram, be the father of a great nation.  Unfortunately, he will also be like a wild beast, fearing others and considering all of them his enemy.

History has shown that Ishmael’s descendants are the same; their isolationist policies and harsh social and religious customs keep them cut off from the rest of the civilized world.

Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.

Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” ~ Gen. 17:3-8

God first lays out what He intends to do as His part of the covenant. He changes Abram’s name to Abraham. I hope He changes my name too!

He reiterates that He will be their God — God’s desire is to be our “exceedingly great reward”, loved and appreciated for Who He is.

He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. ~ Gen. 17:12-13  

God graciously includes not just Abraham’s descendants in His covenant, but also any servants or slaves who are part of His household. This is a first, but also a foreshadowing of God’s ultimate plan.

Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.

 

And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”

 

Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”

 

And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”

 

Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

 

But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.” ~ Gen. 17:15-22
