<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1371" title="Embroideries" src="http://regularrumination.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/embroideries1.jpg?w=219" alt="Embroideries" width="219" height="300" /> I have been a huge fan o f Marjane Satrapi since reading  <em>Persepolis</em> a year or so ago.  Her unique, deceptively simplistic drawing style is so moving and her topic of writing, life in Iran, is something that we so rarely get such an intimate glimpse of.  <em>Embroideries</em> is a smaller collection that is simply a conversation between women, talking about sex, marriage, love and men.  If you are a woman, you will find yourself in these pages.  It never fails to amaze me how we are all connected, that though our experiences are so extremely different, being a human being, or being a woman, is an experience that you can share across all boundaries.</p>
<p>Marjane&#8217;s grandmother, who we got to know in <em>Persepolis</em>, is leading this conversation and it is filled with aunts, mothers, friends and sisters.  These images and stories will make you laugh, but they will also touch your heart and make you cry.  Highly recommended!</p>

<p>Summary: The memories of Marjane Satrapi, growing up during the Iranian Revolution as the world around her becomes more oppressive and dangerous. Chronicles her flight from Iran to France and her eventual return.</p>
<p>Impressions: I&#8217;d heard the graphic novel this film is based on is very good. The film is good, too, and the art is wonderfully simple 2D black and white which allows the audience to focus more on the historical context and the emotions of the characters. You begin to feel incredible sympathy for Marjane as her once &#8220;normal&#8221; life is continuously limited and those close to her begin to vanish or betray her expectations. While there are some constants in her life, at the end of the film even they cannot withstand the test of time. What was saddest about this film was that when Marjane was out of her element she still could not escape the memories and guilt felt from her time in Iran.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#3366ff;">Un viaggio in treno è stato l&#8217;occasione per leggere tutto d&#8217;un fiato il bellissimo Taglia &#38; cuci di Marjane Satrapi, già nota autrice del meraviglioso Persepolis. Sì, me lo sono davvero bevuto, questo libro. Un libro che va all&#8217;essenza stessa della vita, entrando nella dimensione privata femminile. Le donne della famiglia Satrapi e le loro amiche disquisiscono di matrimoni, amore, sesso, disavventure. C&#8217;erano dei momenti in cui ridevo da sola, per la gioia del mio compagno di scompartimento. La cosa meravigliosa è che mi ci sono ritrovata tantissimo. Anche la mia famiglia-tribù, in Francia, ha riti simili. </span></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#3366ff;">Dopo la grande cena del venerdì sera, gli uomini (molto pochi, per la verità, perché di tribù prevalentemente femminile si tratta) si eclissano e le donne si ritrovano nella piccola, intima cucina. Mentre si rassetta e si inizia l&#8217;eterno lavaggio dei piatti, si comincia già a tagliare &#38; cucire. E gli argomenti non sono poi così diversi da quelli descritti dalla Satrapi. Laddove le donne sono più o meno relegate alla sfera privata, la libertà di comportamento e di linguaggio diventa possibile solo in un universo tutto femminile, nel quale possono accedere (e solo fino a una certa età) soltanto i bambini. Si parla di quello che si conosce e di quello che è importante: nascite, matrimoni, tradimenti, funerali, affari di famiglia. E naturalmente di sesso, con una lubricità che mai ci si aspetterebbe. Bellissimi, nel libro della Satrapi, gli episodi legati al problema della verginità. Non si può certo entrare nei dettagli, ma ritrovo il pragmatismo e la scanzonatezza di quelle incredibili donne in quelle della mia famiglia. Silenti in presenza degli uomini,  discretamente portano avanti la baracca, con un pugno di ferro che non ha bisogno di parole. &#8220;<em>Lasciate che gli uomini si riempiano la bocca con la propria importanza. Noi parleremo in privato, taglieremo e cuciremo, apriremo noi stesse solo a chi ci sa capire, e regneremo incontrastate nelle nostre cucine e nei nostri salotti, padrone della nostra casa.</em>&#8220;  E noi &#8220;donne emancipate&#8221; degli anni zero, avremo mai quel potere assoluto sui nostri uomini?</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>La protagonista di Persepolis, il romanzo autobiografico a fumetti di Marjane Satrapi, è diventata un personaggio replicabile. Mi spiego. Sebbene Marjane sia la stessa autrice che racconta la propria storia con l&#8217;obiettivo, come da lei più volte ribadito, di mostrare come essere iraniane e donne non è né una sfiga di per sé né costituisce sinonimo di persona pericolosa, tuttavia essa è ora utilizzata in rete (cfr <a title="persepolis replicante" href="http://www.spreadpersepolis.com/" target="_self">http://www.spreadpersepolis.com/</a>) per raccontare la storia delle controverse elezioni iraniane utilizzando &#8220;il punto di vista di Marjane&#8221;, estranea all&#8217;operazione.</p>
<p>Certo conoscevamo nel mondo del fumetto molti replicanti e versioni tarocco soprattutto legati al mondo Walt Disney, ad esempio i mickey mouse yugoslavi, eppure non mi risulta ci siano altri esempi di personaggi autoriali, nati da forme di autobiografismo e soprattutto dal mondo underground, che siano stati utilizzati da altri. Si tratta di un effetto dell&#8217;arte nel era della sua riproducibilità particolare e intrigante. Che testimonia ancora una volta la potenza comunicativa del romanzo di Satrapi (di cui consiglio la lettura anche di &#8220;Pollo alle prugne&#8221;). Forse si sentirà un po&#8217; la vittima di una clonazione, ma mi sembra un progetto che vale la</p>

<p>Semana passada, num surto consumista sem precedentes, comprei quatro livros de quadrinhos – quadrinhos, não: <em>graphic novels</em>! – lançados recentemente no Brasil. Dois deles fizeram sucesso por estas bandas – ao menos a princípio – por conta dos derivados: os longa-metragens de <strong>Persépolis </strong>e <strong>Valsa com Bashir</strong>. Os outros dois foram <strong>Nova York</strong> – a ótima coletânea das obras de Will Eisner que mergulha fundo na cidade para emergir de lá com toda aquela gama de personagens melancômicos (achei que eles mereciam um neologismo) aos quais só mesmo o autor de <strong>Avenida Dropsie</strong> saberia dar vida – e <strong>Retalhos</strong> – o quadrinho autobiográfico de Craig Thompson, que retrata a infância e a adolescência (com atenção especial ao primeiro amor) do aspirante a desenhista mal nascido entre uma família de cristãos fervorosos do interior do Wisconsin.</p>
<p>A idéia inicial era comprar <strong>Persépolis</strong>. Tive ganas de ler o livro graças ao Nick Hornby (acostumem-se, é possível que ele tenha cadeira cativa neste Ababelado por um longo tempo), que comenta o livro em <strong>Frenesi Polissilábico</strong> e – golpe de misericórdia – reproduz dele alguns trechos. Fiquei encantado pela sensibilidade da desenhista, que reconta a complicada história da revolução iraniana sob a ótica da menina que ela foi um dia. Os desenhos de Marjane Satrapi, em seus traços ingênuos, quase infantis, formam um todo tão consistente com os textos, de uma perspicácia profunda, que só mesmo o olhar de uma criança, quando revisitado pelo do adulto a que deu origem, é capaz de revelar.</p>
<p>A cada página de <strong>Persépolis</strong>, revivo um pouco do sentimento que experimentei há mais de 10 anos, quando li pela primeira vez<strong> O Sol é para Todos</strong> (<em>To Kill a Mockingbird</em>), de Harper Lee (a amiga do Capote, interpretada por Katherine Kenner no filme homônimo). Há certas perguntas que só as crianças podem fazer impunemente. Há muitas perguntas de criança que eu gostaria de fazer para mim mesmo, mas não tenho mais coragem. Quem sabe um dia consiga matar o <em>mockingbird </em>que canta aqui dentro e que toma de mim a palavra toda vez que tento ser honesto comigo mesmo.</p>
<p>Na esteira de <strong>Persépolis</strong>, comprei <strong>New York</strong>, por pura empolgação: gosto do traço, do clima e do humor de Eisner. Como <strong>Persépolis</strong>, a versão cinematográfica de <strong>Valsa com Bashir</strong> foi muito elogiado por terceiros que viram o filme (coisa que pretendo fazer em breve), daí resolvi aproveitar o momento (e a promoção) e meter no carrinho. Não li nenhum dos dois ainda, mas creio que não haverá decepção alguma.</p>

<p>A única aposta verdadeira que eu fiz foi <strong>Retalhos</strong>. Puta lance de sorte! <strong>Retalhos </strong>é uma das coisas mais tocantes que eu já li nos últimos tempos (livros tradicionais inclusos). Admiro demais essas pessoas que são capazes trabalhar por meio da arte os fragmentos mais complexos da própria biografia. Se pensar nessas coisas já é, não raro, um trabalho pra lá de penoso, se para conseguir falar disso sem pirar muita gente recorre a um analista, pense no estágio de amadurecimento (ou desespero) que a pessoa precisa alcançar para retrabalhar essa “matéria de memória” e apresentá-la – diante de si mesmo e do mundo – num livro, num filme ou num poema? Não consigo me imaginar fazendo tal coisa e talvez esse fato explique porque considero isso uma façanha e admira quem dela é capaz.</p>
<p>Sou do time dos “medrrrrosos”, como diria Clarisse, um voyeur do heroísmo alheio. Prefiro encarar meus fantasmas de uma distância segura – coisa que, até então, só a arte conseguiu me proporcionar –, que me permita compará-los com os fantasmas dos outros, para não me sentir assim tão só.</p>
<p>Mas não só os fantasmas. É bom reviver a beleza da vida no traço dos outros – traços que, também nós, traçamos um dia pelo mundo. É fácil reviver nos desenhos de Craig a tensão e os conflitos que envolvem a descoberta do amor e do sexo na adolescência. É bom rever &#8211; de longe &#8211; aquela insegurança que um dia pareceu eterna, mesmo que tenha durado aquele curto período que vai dos 12 aos 19 anos. E é bom perceber que o passado a gente remonta assim, quadro a quadro, feito uma <em>graphic novel</em>.</p>

<p><em>Pinocchio</em>, by well known French comix artist <strong>Winshluss</strong> was awarded the Fauve d’or (best comic book prize) at the 37th <em><a rel="#someid0" href="http://www.bdangouleme.com/49-prize-list-2009-fauve-dor-best-comic-book-prize" target="_blank">Angoulême International Comics Festival</a> </em>in France this year. Winshluss, is the pen name of <a href="http://www.lambiek.net/artists/w/winshluss.htm" target="_blank"><strong>Vincent Parannaud</strong></a> who might also be familiar to some as co-director (with Marjane Satrapi) of the animated film <em>Persepolis</em>.</p>

<p>In <em>Pinocchio</em>, Winshluss has created a wonderfully dark, comic noir interpretation of Carlo Collodi’s classic children’s story. The artwork is primarily done in pen and ink, and watercolor but switches to paint for larger splash panels. He references a terrific range of illustrative styles and history in the story from late 18th century pen and ink, to early French film pioneer Georges Méliès , through early Disney, and underground comix.</p>

<p>Though Disney’s 1940 animated <em>Pinoccho</em> seems to have become the definitive version here in the U.S., Winshluss&#8217; work is much closer to Collodi than Disney in spirit. Like Collodi’s originally serialized story of the wooden marionette, Winshluss&#8217; updated version was first published serialized as chapters in <em>Ferraille Illustré</em>, a French comics journal. Winshluss’ graphic novel is an adult noir movie that at times is both comedy and tragedy. The narrative begins with a shooting, and then flashes back to Pinocchio’s creation (he is now a robot-like android) and adventures. Collodi’s original story is also darker (Pinocchio is hung, Jiminy Cricket is killed…) than Disney’s version. Both versions portray Pinocchio going from one manipulative situation to another. Winshluss has also injected politics into his story which also played a part in Collodi’s original.</p>

<p>The Angoulême site described the book as an “Opera”, which it is in its visual lushness and drama. For the most part, the book is wordless, with multiple characters&#8217; points of view all adding to the sum of Pinocchio’s story. Jiminy Cafard (Cafard translates as cockaroach, as well as hypocrite and a feeling of severe depression)&#8211;Pinocchio’s companion&#8211;provides the most talking in the book.  It seems appropriate and provides comic relief.</p>

<p>As of now Winshluss’ <em>Pinocchio</em> is only available in French (which won’t stop you from enjoying it even if you’re not a French speaker) and through overseas online merchants . Hopefully it will be distributed in the states in the near future.</p>

<p>Det finnes grovt sett to typer religionskritikk.</p>
<p>Det er kritikk som tar utgangspunkt i at religion i seg selv er ”galt”, og man kritiserer selve det å være religiøs, eller religionen som fenomen.</p>
<p>Så er det religionskritikk som diskuterer hva som er god, og hva som er dårlig religion, men som ikke mener at religion i seg selv er galt.</p>
<p>Om man skulle overført det til tenkning om politiske systemer, f. eks, så ville det ene vært å kritisere at man har politikk, fordi man mener at det i seg selv er galt – og det andre ville være å se på hva ved de forskjellige politiske systemer som er bra, og hva som er dårlig. Hva som bør forbedres, og hva som fungerer rimelig all-right.</p>
<p>På samme måte som jeg synes at diskusjonen om vi skal ha politikk eller ikke er forholdsvis naiv, og på grensen til dum, har jeg litt det samme forholdet til religionskritikk. Vi har religion. Vi blir ikke kvitt religion. Og mange av oss mener også at det er mange gode ting med det at vi er religiøse vesener.</p>
<p>Men vi trenger religionskritikk. Vi trenger modne, reflekterte fortellinger om folks religiøse utvikling. Og noe av det triste i at religionskritikk av typen ”vekk med religion” får så stor plass er at den andre typen religionskritikk og tenkning ofte forsvinner. Men den dukker opp, her og der, ikke minst i kunst og litteratur.</p>
<p>Og nå også i tegneserier.</p>
<p>Favorittene mine på tegneseriefronten de siste årene er <a href="http://beatesrasteplass.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/tepper-blankets/">Craig Thompsons Blankets</a>, <a href="http://beatesrasteplass.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/rabbinerens-katt/">Joann Sfars Rabbinerens katt 1</a> og <a href="http://velveteenrabbi.blogs.com/blog/2008/05/joann-sfars-the.html">2</a> samt <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persepolis_(graphic_novel)">Marjan Satrapi Persepolis</a>.  De har enkelte ting til felles, blant annet religionskritikk ”av det andre slaget”. De befinner seg i forholdsvis forskjellige religiøse univers, med unntak av at de dekker tre monoteistiske religionene, jødedom (Sfar), islam (Satrapi) og kristendom (Thompson.)  <img class="size-full wp-image-820 alignright" title="blankets-041" src="http://beatesrasteplass.wordpress.com/files/2009/02/blankets-041.jpg" alt="blankets-041" width="105" height="148" /></p>
<p>Både Thompson og Satrapi har sterke oppvekstromaner der vi følger forfatteren selv gjennom vanskelige barne- og ungdomsår og hvor noe av det som blir vanskelig er nettopp det religiøse miljøet de vokser opp i, med hykleri og sterke forventninger til hva som er rett og galt. Hos Thompson som vokser opp i Moinnestoa, USA, er dette også en indre drift – han er selv et svært religiøst menneske som ønsker å gjøre ”det rette”. Hos Satrapi som vokser opp i Iran i det Khomeini kommer til makta er det snakk om ytre press, for ikke å si tvang til å følge religiøse lover hun selv ikke har noe forhold til å ville etterleve.</p>
<p>Begge disse bøkene er sterk kritikk av de religiøse miljøet de vokser opp i. Men det er noe mer. Hos Thompson er det også en religiøs utvikling av en genuin, personlig religiøsitet. Det som ikke minst blir kritisert i boka er de religiøse tolkningene han blir presentert – og han kommer frem til en annen måte å lese og tolke på som står støtt i avslutningen av boka. <p>Hos Satrapi er det de ytre formene som blir kritisert, hykleriet hos de som tar på seg en religiøs form, ikke bare fordi de må, men også fordi de har mye å tjene på å fremstå som inderlige ”rettroende” Hva som er Satrapi sin egen religiøse overbevisning kommer ikke mye til utrykk i boka, men også hos henne finnes det et øyeblikk der noe genuint trenger igjennom de hykleriske religiøse rammene. Hun vil inn på universitetet, og for å gjøre det må hun gjennom et intervju for å se om hun er ”rettroende”. Hun regner med at hun ikke kommer igjennom det. Men så skjer det jeg opplever som spesielt: Hun kommer til en mann som ikke er skinnhellig. Han er en som er oppriktig troende. Og hva skjer? Hun kommer inn, på sin ærlighet.</p>
<p>Dette er bare en liten sekvens i boka, men for meg ble den viktig. Dette øyebikket hvor man fikk tak i en annen type religiøsitet og den ble stående som en et lysglimt.</p>

<p>Sfar sin bok er av en helt annen type. Dette er bøker hvor man problematiserer religion, ofte sett gjennom øynene på en katt. Vi møter oppriktig troende, hyklere, sjarlataner, propaganda, rasisme og friksjoner både innen en religion og mellom religioner. Det er bokstavelig talt en reise i religionskritikk, og en intelligent, morsom og klok sådan.</p>
<p>Alle tre anbefales på det varmeste til religionskritikere, av alle slag.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-54" title="images" src="http://stateofdenmark2.wordpress.com/files/2009/01/images.jpeg" alt="images" width="86" height="124" /> Marjane Satrapi (author of <em>Persepolis</em>)  has another graphic novel out entitled <em>Chicken with Plums</em>.  This one takes place in Tehran in 1958 and features Nasser Ali Khan a tar (which to the best of my knowledge is similar to a guitar/sitar) player.  When his wife breaks his tar, Nasser is unable to find a replacement.  Without his music, Nasser loses the will to live and the majority of this graphic novel takes place in the span of the eight days it takes Nasser to die.  Full of flashbacks, this graphic novel is heartbreakingly tragic and yet, Satrapi still is able to find some ironic humor in life.</p>
<p>Now, I must say, I am not much of a graphic novel reader.  For some reason I find it very difficult to read both text and pictures at the same time.  That being said, Satrapi&#8217;s graphic novels have a charm and artistic quality to them that I find readable.  The flashbacks were easily identifiable by the black background and I quickly flew through this 83 page novel in less than an hour.   In fact, I plan on reading <em>Embroideries </em>next.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Het is alweer enige tijd geleden, maar vanavond duik ik hoogstwaarschijnlijk nog eens een filmzaal in. Voor filmliefhebbers is <a href="http://www.theroxytheatre.be/" target="_blank">The Roxy Theatre</a> in Koersel een uitstekend alternatief voor de Euroscoop -en Kinepoliszalen. Op maandag draait men er steevast &#8216;de betere films&#8217; tijdens de Elan Filmavonden. <a href="http://www.theroxytheatre.be/">http://www.theroxytheatre.be/</a></p>
<p>&#8216;The Roxy&#8217; in Koersel biedt (voor mij althans) verschillende voordelen op filmgebied. Je hebt er (meestal) geen ellenlange wachtrijen, de prijzen zijn aanvaardbaar, de drank kost er geen 5 euro per consumptie, je mag zelfs je zwaardere bieren mee de zaal innemen én je mag nog zelf bepalen welke seat je wil (zonder dat idiote voorverkoopsysteem dat men elders hanteert). Kortom: enkel voordelen!</p>
<p>Vanavond &#8216;Waltz with Bashir&#8217; van Ari Folman, een animatiefilm over de Libanese oorlog begin jaren &#8216;80. Benieuwd of het vergelijkbaar gaat zijn met &#8216;Persepolis&#8217;, de verfilmde versie van de stripromans van Marjane Satrapi. Voor de liefhebbers hier alvast de trailer van &#8216;Waltz with Bashir&#8217;.</p>

<p>We missen op tv dan wel de ongetwijfeld spannende finale van Expeditie Robinson 2008, maar hey &#8230; Hiukwan wint die toch, dus waarom zouden we wel kijken. Dan kunnen we even goed lekker onderuit in een filmzaal gaan zitten/hangen/liggen (schrappen wat niet past). Zeker als we bepaalde recensies mogen geloven is het geheel meer dan de moeite van het bekijken waard, we gaan ervoor vanavond. <a href="http://www.8weekly.nl/index.php?art=6812">http://www.8weekly.nl/index.php?art=6812</a></p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong></p>
<p>Deze animatiefilm is absoluut de moeite waard. De droomsequentie met de honden aan het begin en de slotbeelden zijn écht beklijvend. Bijzonder goede muziekscore ook van de Duitse avant-gardistische en nogal eclectische muzikant <a href="http://www.maxrichter.com/" target="_blank">Max Richter</a>. Er zitten slechts 2 tracks in die niet van zijn hand zijn, nl. &#8216;Enola Gay&#8217; van OMD en &#8216;This is not a love song&#8217; van PIL. Voor de liefhebbers het allereerste muzieknr uit de film, helaas zonder bewegend beeld (dat moet je er zelf bij dromen). <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
