Mr. Satriani is well known for his fantastic tone, and also the versatility of the instrument he’s designed that we’re discussing now. A core part of the flexibility of this instrument is in the ‘push-pull’ tone control. This opens you up to a range of single coil type sounds not unlike the configuration on a telecaster. That’s right, not only can you get searing lead lines, but glorious twang too!

In my view this guitar is an excellent buy, and great value for money – you’ll get a lot of mileage out this guitar! £399 is the price…let us know where we need to send it!

Non è peccato mortale  sostituire Virgilio con Alice Cooper! E se – sì: è peccato mortale, m’ho da confessare…
E l’amico della kerkoporta presta i polsi: per formulare fastidi e ferrare il forte sentire – altro. Oltre il BellPaese buonista che caramella carmina e canta cliché: zecca l’oro che copre tutte le carie e tutte le carenze. Carenza che buca la pagina la parola il plasma: nella marea massmediatica di bbbuoni/socialmente impegnati/altruisti/benefattori/attivisti d’ogni sorta – chi sono i cattivi? E se non sono i giovani sono i metallari e quando sono giovani&metallari – sono prede prelibate da patibolare. E se prima l’etichetta [dai gloriosi esponenti della gloriosa Italietta Ipocrita] era: *alfiere dell’anoressia*, ora è: *paladina dei metallari*. Vera è la violenza con cui difendo ogni mio dire/dare – e non ho nessuna intenzione di smettere. Perché e per chi – non è difficile comprendere: troppo comodo parlare/prosare/poetare nei corposculi di qualche/qualsivoglia corrente. Assuefatti e accecati e accomodati nell’Arcadia e nell’Ammmore – asserire che la parola è cruda e crudele, che l’essere umano [tanto perfettibile quanto fallibile] prova e provoca Rabbia – è [ancora] realtà che non si vuole accettare.

E allora? Non potendo assumersi la responsabilità di tutta la gamma emotiva, non sforzandosi più d’indagare quelle scomode zone d’ombra – che non è mai piacevole percorrere quelle pieghe, quelle delle passioni più pericolose – la maggioranza deve *trovare i colpevoli*. Gli aizzapopoli, i corpi violenti da violentare. Gli abiti da bruciare per purificarsi. Abiti e ambiti naturalmente adatti allo scopo: e allora – attacca i metallari che, AnimaliBruttiCattiviDannati, suonano/sondano anche gli stati più scuri/secreti dell’umanissimo sentire/sentirsi!

E allora: vi dico non basta! Non basta dirsi controcultura e poi bigottare buone azioni. E allora vi dico: affarinculo le denunce davanti e dietro lo schermo, mentre si coccolano scheletri armadi e maschere – quando nessuno vede [ma qualcuno vede/vedrà sempre: OGNI mondo è un mondo piccolo]. E allora vi dico: dedico tutto – al popolo borchiato che conosce la Rabbia e – quando distrugge – è per costruire: domani migliori.

E, in primis, ringrazio il di lui kerkoportante Guglielmo Amore. E si ringrazia – sempre – Fabrizio Centofanti e LPELS tutta per aver permesso la pubblicazione dei primi estratti [ché lapidazione da parte dei puristi si prepara. Well at school we’ve had a blues project to do in music. So, I went round to my friends house who has a drum kit but never had lessons, and my pianist friend. (I’m a guitarist) And we made some pretty cool tunes for our homework. Seeing as the drummer has never had lessons, he’s good. Video coming up later.

A revista Time fez recentemente uma lista com os 10 melhores guitarristas de todos os tempos. A lista é a seguinte:

03. B.B. King
04. Keith Richards

08. Les Paul
09. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Prince

Estas coisas das listas dos melhores de sempre, têm sempre muito que se lhe diga. Eu tenho a certeza absoluta que o critério principal foi o gosto pessoal de quem fez a lista. Todos os rankings de guitarristas que vi até agora, têm o Jimi Hendrix no topo. E sempre será. Mas analisando as coisas friamente, ele é o melhor guitarrista de sempre? Eu nem me atrevo a contestar isto, é um lugar-comum. Se ele merece? Provavelmente sim, pôs a guitarra na ribalta e isso é muito. Aquilo que mais aprecio no Jimi hendrix são duas coisas que me faltam: um sentido rítmico apuradíssimo e a forma como misturava ritmos e melodia, criando assim uma harmonia extraordinária, poucos conseguem criar tanta riqueza musical apenas com uma voz e guitarra. Em baixo estão dois exemplos daquilo que acabo de dizer. O segundo “Little Wing” é das minhas músicas preferidas, é de um bom gosto incrível e tem um solo que derrama feeling, como é de costume no Jimi Hendrix.

Muito disto passa pelo problema em homenagear pessoas vivas, ou que ainda estão a construir a lenda, tais como Steve Vai e Joe Satriani. Estes dois são absolutamente incontornáveis. Não se pode fazer uma lista dos melhores de sempre sem os incluírem. A questão passa muito pelo critério, que além do goisto pessoal, é a influência noutros músicos. Certamente o Hendrix é a maior referência nesse domínio. O próprio Satriani o admite e o elege como o melhor. Mas então próprio Satriani não é uma influência? Absolutamente. Nem se questiona. A maior da minha geração, e essa quando fizer uma lista dos melhores guitarristas, vai incluir esse nome de certeza. Eu até uso uma guitarra do modelo dele, palhetas da mesma marca, cordas, etc. Não imito o som porque não tenho ouvido, talento e material para isso.

E quanto ao Steve Vai, é difícil ser influencia porque ninguém consegue tocar como ele. O Satriani é mais alcançável, não digo tecnicamente porque isso é outro campeonato, mas as harmonias, o uso de frases com muitos pull-off’s e hammer-on’s, o uso modo lidío que também é muito usado pelo Steve Vai, o qual confere um sabor exótico nas músicas, coisas que podem ser absorvidas, menos mirabolantes, o Satch distingue-se muito pela dimensão em termos de composição que consegue dar à guitarra. Pois é, este senhor Satriani fundiu este exotismo com o rock,juntando aquele som único e uma técnica magistral (O Hendrix não tinha tanta, lamento, mas é mesmo assim) criou um estilo que influenciou muita e muita gente. Está para os guitarristas da actualidade como o Hendrix para os hippies, mas com uma grande diferença. O Jimi Hendrix estava associado a um movimento de libertação cultural, uma mensagem de liberdade e paz numa altura conturbada. Isso é fundamental para a criação de um ídolo, uma referência, não critico isso, a música serve para isso e o Hendrix transmitia essa cultura a cada nota que atacava.

Este artigo fala de uma coisa muito importante. A injustiça de compara guitarristas de estilos muito diferentes, blues, flamenco, heavy, jazz, etc. São campeonatos diferentes, o Paco de Lucia certamente tem lugar nesta lista. Sou grande adepto do Slash, mas um segundo lugar parece-me esticar um bocado a corda. Rolling Stone também elaborou uma lista do género onde classificou o Kurt Cobain como o 12º melhor guitarrista de sempre. Eu sem exagero, consigo pensar em 50 guitarristas melhor que ele. Mas uma coisa eu não posso negar, se calhar se forem contabilizadas as tentativas de aprendizes de guitarra em tentar tocar o riff inicial da “Come Has You Are”, e comparando com as tentativas em tocar os riffs daqueles 50 em que estou a pensar, provavelmente o Kurt Cobain ganha por “quinjajero”. É uma geração inteira com guitarras cheias de autocolantes a ouvir o “MTV Unplugged in New York” e a passar um charro à gaja que gostam. No fim, são essas coisas que contam. Que se lixe o Satriani…

Na lista da Time, consta um nome que diz muito, Yngwie Malmsteen. Eu não o colocaria no top ten, porque foi alguém que se perdeu no tempo, a qualidade da música foi-se perdendo gradualmente e é um tipo cheio de “manias”. Mas uma coisa é certa, o primeiro álbum dele, Rising Force, continua a ser dos melhores de sempre do heavy neo-clássico. Uma mistura espectacular entre heavy-metal e o barroco, dois estilos que assentam como uma luva um no outro. Porquê? Virtuosismo. Essa é a qualidade principal que os executantes do dois estilos devem possuir. Muitos outros guitarristas fizeram o mesmo, Rhandy Roads (Ozzy Osbourne), Jason Becker, Marty Friedman (Megadeth), Kiko Loureiro (Angra), Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow & Deep Purple), Tony Macalpine, Michael Angelo Batio.

Este guitarrista sofre de uma doença degenerativa rara que o deixou impossibilitado de tocar, ainda compõe com o auxilio de um computador. Esta é a sua virtuosíssima versão do 5º Capricho de Paganini.

Mas existe sempre uma coisa que impressiona os leigos da guitarra, o “show off”. E o maior especialista nessa matéria é o Michael Angelo. Tem uma técnica e habilidade impressionantes, toca com guitarras de dois braços ao mesmo tempo e faz assim umas trocas de mãos alucinantes e coisas do género. Mas é apenas circo, pois a música é completamente desprovida de feeling.

Eu não discordo que o Prince e o Keith Richards constem da lista, mas consigo pensar em melhores guitarristas, mas o Prince é muito bom e a maioria das pessoas desconhecem esse facto. A presença de Les Paul (falecido recentemente) também compreendo, inventou o modelo Les Paul, absolutamente famoso em todo o mundo guitarrístico, além de ser ele próprio um bom guitarrista. O Chuck Berry é considerado o criador do rock & roll. O Jonh Lennon disse que se houvesse outro nome para o rock & roll seria Chuck Berry. Aqueles riffs de guitarra são reconhecíveis de imediato e a presença em palco com os movimentos de pernas que deram origem à postura rock dos guitarristas. Fica aqui o vìdeo da sua famosíssima “Johnny B. Goode”.

E este é um dos seus famosos “moves”, o “duckwalk”, mais tarde imitado pelo Angus Young dos ACDC.

Há guitarristas que se destacam pela elegância da sua musica. Exemplos disso são o Eric Jonhson e o Steve Morse. O Eric tem dos melhores sons de guitarra que já ouvi e um técnica extremamente subtil. Um primeiro convidado dos G3, um grupo de 3 guitarristas onde 2 são o Satriani e o Vai e outro é um convidado. Uma cimeira dos 3 grandes. Fica a qui uma das suas preciosidades, “Manhattan”.

O Steve Morse é outro exemplo de elegância, mais ainda, de versatilidade. Uma çao de bom gosto e de domínio técnico de todas as técnicas de guitarra. Fica aqui um vídeo de um solo maravilhoso, feito nos Deep Purple, pois ele é o guitarrista dessa banda, em detrimento do Malmsteen, é bem melhor do que ele.

Os guitarristas de blues Peter green, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Albert King, Albert Collins, etc. Não consigo nomea-los todos, são muitos e muito bons. Estes influenciaram outros guitarristas de todos os estilos. No metal não há muito guitarristas, dos bons, que não tenham influências destes artistas e utilizam escalas de blues nos seus solos.

Na fusão proliferam geniais músicos. Fusão é um estilo que mistura jazz com outros estilos diferentes, rock, blues, e frequentemente música do mundo. Da parte dos guitarristas há muito bons exemplos como Pat Metheney, Al di Meola, Frank Gambale, etc. Já tive oportunidade de ver Meola ao vivo e tenho um cd autografado, é genial, mistura flamenco e latino com outras. O Gambale é um guitarrista que tem muitos livros publicados e é fenemonal na ´tecnica de sweep picking, ou seja, varrer as cordas com a palheta e fazer aperggios.

Este vídeo é de uma música do Meola, “Mediterranean Sundance”, ele toca com o Paco de Lucia e faz parte de um disco obrigatório para qualquer guitarrista. O “Friday Night in San Francisco”.

Este é o Frank Gambale, num vídeo a mostrar como se fazem arpeggios, atençaõ também ao baixista, Jeff Berlin.

Bem, eu podia continuar a falar de guitarristas, mas vou abreviar e passar a um estilo do qual sou profundo admirador, o Heavy-Metal. Aqui abundam grandes músicos. A dupla de guitarristas dos Iron Maiden é disso exemplo. O Dave Murray e o Adrian Smith definem o que é o metal. Nem vou entrar em detalhes, eles têm tudo, os om, a personalidade, a humidade e a técnica…Fica aqui uma das minhas preferidas e muito underrated, “Stranger in a Strange Land”.

Eles são tantos, que até parece mal falar deles só de passagem, já referi alguns, mas o Angus Young dos ACDC tem de merecer um reparo especial, são muitos riffs famosos e muito bom gosto. O Alex Skolnick dos Testament, um dos melhores guitarristas do thrash e a aluno do Satriani,um dos meus preferidos. O Dimebag Darrel dos Pantera, que reinventou o metal, o Criss Oliva dos Savatage, e por aí fora. Não me lembro de mais, mas são muitos. Ah, e não me posso esquecer do Brian May, apesar de não ser metal, Queen tem um guitarrista com um estilo único que tocava com uma moeda, que tinha um som que muitos tentaram imitar sem sucesso.

Vou finalizar esta extensa enumeração de guitarristas com um dos que mais me tocou, o Jonh Petrucci dos Dream Theater. Técnica e feeling desta maneira é uma coisa única. Um marco na história do metal. Nem vale a pena dizer mais nada é único. E não aparece na patética lista da Rolling Stone dos melhores 100 guitarristas do mundo, é mesmo isso, conseguíram fazer um alista sem o incluir, nem a ele nem ao Satriani…

O que me mete mais nojo nisto tudo, é o facto do Satriani ser conhecido pela história com os palermas do Coldplay. Experimentem escrever satriani no g0ogle e vejam qual é a palavra que aparece a seguir. Em relação à suposta imitação desses gajos, eu até acho que fazem coisas interessantes, não ouço, se é para ouvir pop, ouço U2 que é muitíssimo melhor. Mas o pessoal fica todo contente com aquela música “Viva la Vida” que supostamente é uma cópia da “If I Could Fly”. Se é ou não, não sei, mas uma coisa é certa, nem é do melhor de Satriani, longe disso.

ps: Faltam aqui imensos nomes (Santana…:D), eu também não me atreveria a fazer uma lista dos 100 melhores, simplesmente uma dos meus 100 preferidos, e não passam disso estas listas, sejam elas sobre guitarristas, álbuns ou bandas. E já agora, estou aberto a críticas, com sempre.

Bem, lembrei-me agora de alguns nomes que não de forma alguma ser esquecidos, Santana, Eddie Van Halen e Nuno Bettencourt.

Já agora algumas uma curiosidades em relação a este video. O pormenor do Santana a desviar a guitarra quando pressente o feedback do amplificador (1:17) dá um ar caótico ao concerto. Genial, quando vejo este concerto e outros em woodstock, dá-me a impressão que foi simplesmente um grupo de pessoas que se juntou para tocar música “Hey, queres vir tocar uns acordes? Não tenho grande equipamento, mas vai estar lá um pessoal fixe e tal, Hendrix, Santana, The Who, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker.” O baterista que toca com o Santana, Mickaël Shrieve, foi o músico mais novo que tocou nesse festival, e destacou-se pelo solo que faz nesta música. Como é que me esqueci do Van Halen?! Acho que poucos guitarristas popularizaram uma técnica como o Van Halen com o tapping. É uma técnica onde se utiliza a mão que segura a palheta para “martelar” directamente na corda na casa pretendida. Dá um efeito espectacular, e é a foram mais fácil de fazer coisas rápidas. Mas não é só por isso que ele se destaca, tem um sentido rítmico excelente, e os acompanhamentos dele são de um bom gosto tremendo. E sempre cheio de pinch harmonics lá pelo meio, assim grosseiramente, são os “gritos” que se ouvem a sair da guitarra. Algo que é usado e abusado no heavy-metal, Zack Wilde, Glen Tipton (Judas Priest), são bons exemplos.

Também me olvidé de falar dos guitarristas portugueses. E começo já pelo açoriano Nuno Bettencourt, imigrou para os EUA e foi considerado o herdeiro do Van Halen em termos estilísticos. Aquilo que falei do Van Halen em termos técnicos aplica-se ao Nuno, mas o português envereda um pouco mais pelo funk. Eu só não percebo é porque é que este tipo é tão pouco conhecido em Portugal, guitarrista dos Extreme, os autores da famosíssima “More Than Words”. Fica aqui um grande solo, lindo mesmo, pleno de técnica e sentimento, e eu não me canso de frisar o quanto estas duas características são importantes para um guitarrista.

Mas há outros, o Gonçalo Pereira, cheio de técnica e com um estilo muito próprio, também desconhecido em Portugal. Mas posso dar mais exemplos, Pedro Jóia; Joel Xavier, Paulo Barros. Todos eles muito bons. Este último é o guitarrista dos Tarântula, uma banda de Heavy-Metal portuguesa.

Otro guitarrista que dio el salto a la fama a traves de internet. Natural de Brasil, se hizo famoso al ganar el 2008 Guitar Idol, concurso en el que participan guitarristas de todo el mundo interpretando creaciones propias.

Abanderado de las guitarras Crafter y los amplificadores Carvin, es un guitarrista muy técnico, limpio y preciso. Sonido muy en la onda Satriani (en el video podemos verlo con una Ibanez Joe Satriani 10th cromada), unos tappings muy floridos, sweep pickings, y toda clase de florituras.

Merece la pena escuchar su interpretacion del “Surfing with the alien” de Joe Satriani.

1. The Background

This is the first album from the “super group” Chickenfoot. The group has been dubbed a super group because all four members have been successful either on their own, or with another group that has garnered accolades from the music industry and fans. Joe Satriani, the guitar virtuoso, fits into the former category and Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith are recognizable names from former mega-bands. At first listen, this album is pretty much what you would expect from a talent-laden foursome like C-Foot. There is a lot of screaming from Hagar and a ton of kick-ass guitar playing from Satriani. Chad Smith provides a very solid back beat and Michael Anthony provides the same unexciting and completely non-innovative bass playing for which he is famous.

2. The Substance

Overall, the album is very well produced. The sound quality is great. Satriani plays a well constructed rhythm guitar when necessary and his lead licks are clean and crisp. He also has some great ‘sounds’…that’s the only way I can describe them. Listen to “Soap on a Rope”. He rips off these little pops in between the big, meaty riff of the song…pure Satriani. Sammy Hagar sounds freakin’ ridiculous! This dude lets loose with some screams that are reminiscent of Roger Daltry! I mean, primal; that’s the label I would put on them. Give a listen to “Oh Yeah”. The scream at the middle and towards the end almost makes your blood curdle! My only jag for Hagar is the lyrics. They are trite and a continuation of his wine, women and song motif. Yawn, heard that lyric before. The drumming on the album is good. I would have enjoyed hearing a little more creativity from Chad Smith, but he did what he was hired to do; keep the beat for Hagar and Satriani. Michael Anthony was back in two aspects: his mediocre bass playing and his strong, extremely high-pitched harmonies on backing vocals. I missed those backing vocals from Anthony. Listen to “Turnin’ Left”. It’s classic Michael Anthony straining the limits of the male vocal range! His bass playing is solid, if not very innovative. His booming bass combined with Smith’s drumming produces a full, solid beat on this recording.

4/5. If you’re a fan of good, solid, rock-hard, rock music, go out and pick up this album. There were only one or two songs that I didn’t care for; one of them being the obligatory slow ballad. Satriani, Hagar, Anthony and Smith put their egos aside and combined to make some great music. In this case, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Aşa cum a spus şi Joe Satriani, eu îl consider pe Les Paul originalul Guitar Hero, omul  care a creat standardul muzicii acutale şi un chitarist de neîntrecut.

Fact is; Rock in this country is very nearly dead. (however slightly off tangent clicking here is the band can save it)

I hate admitting it, but once again, the figures don’t lie. Old school rock and metal bands in the UK’s Top 40 Chart display nothing which hasn’t heavily been listened to past the turn of the century. Nirvana for goodness sake haven’t released anything “new” for a number of years now really have they? Other than keeping Courtney Love in cash to help finance young Frances Bean’s 17th birthday party in a weeks time by releasing old material being almost passed of as new. Maiden, AC/DC, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam! Nothing really that new at all.

“..if we’re going to do this properly then we’re going have to get a guitarist, let’s talk to Joe Satriani. As far as I’m concerned he’s the best guitarist in the world.” – Sammy Hagar.

Now THAT, is a great RocknRoll quote. A band of musical brothers wondering what the next step is with regards to progression in the phases of global stardom, just grab a world reknowned guitarist, piece of cake.

Chickenfoot have a slightly different turn though on the Top 40 Rock Chart. They have everything that sounds very familar from various depths of rock and metal and have hybridised them all together producing something that sounds classical in the Hard Rock cafe Wurlitzer jukebox.

When listening to Chickenfoot’s self-titled debut album it immediately to me sounded like it was nothing new. The style of vocals are heavy, powerful, borderline-screaming-rock aggression. The crashing drummer’s symbals and cheeky high-hats. Rattling, thunderous basslines and a guitarist which sounds like he’s trying to be Joe Satriani. And oh yeah, it is Joe Satriani!

So when looking at the rock charts and you see Chickenfoot amongst all the greats, they’ve done nothing new but there’s a jolly good reason for them being there. This is classic rock people bit just a bit fresher than what we’re used too.

Tal vez no, pero si detrás del desarrollo de estos modelos están Steve Vai y Ibanez la cosa cambia. Ahora las primeras séries de Ibanez Jem son modelos valorados y apreciados por los coleccionistas y los incondicionales de la marca y del artista.

Si, pero…es realmente igual el modelo que se pone a la venta (normalmente a precios elevados) al modelo que lleva el endorser?. Pues en algunos casos si y en otros…las diferencias son notables, ya sea porque la madera es escogida de forma especial o bien porque incluye elementos o modificaciones que el modelo de série no lleva. Como anécdota en el Festival Leyendas de la Guitarra que se realizó en Sevilla en el 92 con la presencia de grandes estrellas de las seis cuerdas (Vai, Satriani, Bettencourt, May, Walsh…) el mismo Steve Vai acudió al evento sin ninguna guitarra con lo que tuvieron que buscar varias Ibanez Jem de entre las tiendas de Sevilla que tenian stock del modelo, ningún problema: las guitarras que usó Mr.Vai en la gala eran modelos de estricta série.

Como acercarse al sonido “personal” de cierto artista?. Sinceramente?…nuestro consejo es que no lo intentes, aunque pudieras disfrutar de todo el equipamiento de tu ídolo o artista preferido (con lo cual deberias, en la mayoría de los casos destinar una cantidad considerable de dinero), sin embargo Vai, Satriani, Timmons, Slash, Beck o cualquiera que quieras nombrar siempre sonaran a Vai, Satriani, Slash, o Beck independientemente de la guitarra, amplificador o otros elementos que utilicen. La magia reside en los dedos, dirigidos por el cerebro.

No obstante es bueno tener ciertas referencias en cuanto al sonido que uno quiere conseguir o simplemente le gusta. Una eslabón (de tantos) que forman la cadena que configura  el “sonido personal” de cada uno son las pastillas. Es una parte relativamente asequible dentro del gran conjunto que puede llegar a conformar el  ”tono” y es relativamente fácil sustituir un set de pastillas (o electrónica) para conseguir modificar en alguna forma el sonido. Junto a los modelos comerciales que todos conoceis de las marcas habituales (DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, EMG, Lindy Fralin, Fender, Lace Sensor, Bareknuckle…), existen modelos “signature” construidos bajo las especificaciones del endorser, con un cierto números de vueltas de bobina, ciertos materiales magnéticos, cable de determinado grosor…todo ello para conseguir una respuesta sonora y señal de entrega adecuada.

Deci ca sa fac iar o povestioara, cretina dupa unii, cu piese misto din care sa reiasa ce si cum am facut eu, o sa incep cu o piesa care nu stiu cat de bine explica unde am fost eu aseara, dar este pe aproape. In prima faza seara superba a inceput cu piesa de mai jos

Guitar instrumental work is difficult to get the public to be pleased by it. Only true Rock and Metal guitar fans I feel can appreciate it (if any cares to dispute then please do).

His songs on his player are definately Vai/Satriani influenced, I mean, who isn’t though really? But their mantle is an awkward one to climb to being as they have been there for so long and never been removed from it. Will they ever?

Possibly so if Mr. Connally here didn’t have to quite do everything all by himself. After putting the tracks together, putting them down and to the morons, copy and pasting, copy and pasting then the work currently available to listen to is pretty impressive. Initially aprehensive about the tunes that I’d here i find myself flowing along and enjoying them because too many times they are eye-cringing, boring or just way OTT.

The balance of sound is there, the highs match the lows but I feel the journey which the tracks take us do not really take you very far. You want to chillout, be flown to magical places on this magic carpet called Guitar Solo but your’re just taken to the kitchen for another cup of Chai.

It’s difficult for me to appreciate this kind of work nowadays as the variety I feel can not really progress any further than what it has done due to the already mentioned maestros previously said.

Same old, same old it may be, but on the positive note, it is right up there though. The depth of the growling, supporting rythym humming along with the delighful, wailing over the top that good old Zakk loves to bits and has done for blinking years. Cognitive Dissonance is cool as. Fast and furious at parts and grows wonderfully, harmonious, soothing and great production for what you could say is a bedroom guitarist.

Sunday…yey and *sigh* in the same time.  Was almost impossible to sleep the ngiht before so all I wanted since the first hour was a nice bed and a long shower. But the festival was too cool to wish away from it. Anyway, wI woke up and happily noticed a cloudy sky. Finally no more boiling (I was to be so wrong, the clouds were gone in 2-3 hours ). Frenkie told us that at night he was hearing some beeps and some sounds made by a camera zoom. Poor man. My video camera was somehow on…I brought it wiht me to fil the crowd in the camping on Sunday morning. Well, I managed to film but with the small camera that doesn’t have sound recording. It is a difference between people on friday and on sunday – checkout the crowd videos on youtube.

So, Frenkie brought the car closer to the cmaping, we took our stuff in and off to the festival. UFO opened the day with their old fashioned heavy metal that seemed pretty appealing to the relatively small number of present people. And perhaps more than half of them with a hangover (or more). I have no idea why I went to see Warbringer in the Maruqee 1 tent…but I got to hear some very high pitched guitar riffs on some very fast drumming and I think the singer was saying ‘Fuck’ every 2nd word (it’s not like most of the other bands used this word a lot, but they had the most of it). On my way to sit down and wait for Lamb of God I pased by Marquee 2 and heard bits of Diablo Boulevard. Another band to certainly check out as their rhythm and vocal seemed very pleasant to me. Again, something rocknrollish.

Then mmm, Lamb of God. Frenkie pointed out that they had like 32 speakers on the stage or so, but obviously they don’t use them all. Yet, the sound was incredibly powerful. Your stomach was vibrating with their bass. Considering their crazy groovy songs, it was expected to see huge moshpits again. And was one of the first bands that allows the crowd to sing and they stop ALL instruments. Most bands have either the drums, or a backing vocals or so. Also the vocalist was very talkactive which I actually like at shows and he interacted a lot with the crowd making them spin around or so, and he even took a little shower on stage.  His harsh voice remained as powerful for the entire performance and I can still hear the crowd’s screams when they played walk with me in hell. They also played other of the favorites such as Walk with me in hell, Ruin, Ruin, Redneck, Black Label.

Back to tent 1 to checkout Scar Symmetry…and interesting mix of power metal like with growling, as they had two vocalists with two different vocal skills and ranges which flow ok on the death metal rhythms. Trivium started after on the main stage and their double bass seemed impressive, same the energy of the singer or the guitarists who kept running from one end to the other of the stage. Yet, I was inside the press area, almost unable to move anylonger. Frenkie went to see Eths inside the smallest tent – a growling female fronted band – and he told me that it was packed and there were folks with Trivium tshirts at the entrance, DURING Trivium’s performance on the main stage. I am sorry I missed them. Candlemass in Marquee 1…the guy looks as awful as he did in Oslo, but the show was even worse since they didn’t have the scene settings and his ‘dark’ movements made no sense. I moved along quickly to check out Suicidal Tendencies. Again, no regrets on that decision. Some damn good thrash metal they played. I mean, I haven’t heard much of this genre and haven’t been too attracted by it, but seeing bands like this one live sort of changed my mind. God, give me enough time to listen to so much good new music. Again, it was another band who didn’t bother at all with any stage show. All they had was their music and the insanity of the crowd.

Chickenfoot…now that’s watching legends live.  When you have vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen and Montrose), bassist Michael Anthony (ex-Van Halen), guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on the stage, all you can do is sit down and be amazed. It was like their 7th show together after they had just released an album. But you couldn’t see it’s a new band, due the experience of the members. They were again, so natural and delivered an incredible show (even if the music is not the catchiest I ever heard. I can hardly remember it, but each of the guys did a good job) and I hope that many of the young crowd is gonna end up checking out their old pefomances. The singer made a joke on the guy who was watering the crowd, saying he hopes there’s tequilla or at least vodka, since water would kill those people. Then he also asked to be sprayed.

On again to another powerful show from Devil driver. Think it had the most crowdsurfers, but the music was totally insane and the drumming was impossible. I enjoyed how the guitarist kept changing the ‘front’ plan of the stage so everyone of them got to ’show off’.  And as if I didn’t have enough loud music, I moved along to see Sacred Reich. Holy shit, the organizers were brave to put them in a tent. They played their asses off, they had one of the loudest crowd I heard and I think they were screaming outside as well. Again, old school thrash metal that convinces me to  listen to it some more.

A break from crazy music to hear Disturbed on the main stage. Another uninteresting vocalist and another band I would have happily considered in a smaller tent and replace it with Sacred Reich or Anthrax for example. But before I went to see Anthrax (I was happy I knew the name :p ) I stopped by Epica. Aye, cool chick on  vocals but I heard to songs of theirs and I only knew there were two songs because there was a break at some point and she spoke a little. Ok music but seemed too repetitive. So we moved to Anthrax’ tent. Again, it was packed. It was crazy in there with everyone headbanging, crowdsurfing (over and over again) or jumping up and down. Or moshpiting but those I didn’t really see too well. I heard they have a new vocalist but in my opinion he did a hell of a job. He electrified everyone. And he seemed as if he was plugged in since he had the same amount of energy at all parts of his performance.

Nightwish time. I admit I like some of their old songs, some I actually love. I don’t like Tarja, but I admire her voice. I heard very little of the new kid (hardly a girl or a woman) and I knw she had a totally off voice. But god, when she started to … produce sounds, I felt the need to cover my ears. For Christ sake, I know they didn’t want a Tarja copy, but then don’t ask a kid to sing Tarja’s songs. She can’t do high notes or if she does they’re too strident. The long melodic notes are turned into a lower piteched ‘aaaaa’s that are very unpleasant. The songs are totally rearranged and actually Marco has to play the stronger parts (that belonged to Tarja). And she is ugly, she is fake…oh well, it’s their choice of a vocalist. It was an extreme turn off for everyone I spoke to and we were happy when it ended. They had some nice fireworks and fires during the show, but uncool as it wasn’t completly dark. Actually, considering it was one of the headliners, I didn’t really see the crowd too interested. There was plenty of room in front. Manson had more people gathered for his performance.

We moved our asses to the tent where Children of Bodom was playing.  They had some keyboard problems and the keyboardist was pissed at the beginning of the show as he kept calling the technician. But the show was cool, again too bad they were in a tent. Not the best band I know but the crowd was again coming in huge numbers and really enjoying the music. I heard people complaining about the setlist, as they didn’t include all the expected hits:

Last band came on the main stage. Or last man or whatever. Manson. Marylin…I was looking forward to see his show, to see how weird or crazy it can get. But after seeing plenty of people imitating his looks in the crowd (I was feeling to desire to stop them and tell them they’re ugly) I already had enough. His show started with a huuuuuge curtain blocking the view on the stage and you could see the smoke coming from behind. Eventually they lifted it and everything was red due the smoke and lights. So actually I recall seeing a red show with some incredible ugly people on stage…Musicaly it was Manson, dunno, sound was good but really not my cup of tea. We left even before half of his show and by the time it ended we were in Eindhoven and soon zzzleeeping. And I woke up with a flu..and, oh well, the rest is unrelated to festival so there’s time for more posts.

Am dormit prost. Chiar foarte prost. Asta după ce am adormit greu. Pur şi simplu, m-am învârtit de pe o parte pe alta, m-am holbat în tavan şi m-am gândit la ce nu reuşisem să fac ieri.
