Kemudian ia membungkus sisa-sisa, dan di pagi hari, kambing selalu hidup kembali untuk menarik kereta.. Ketika putra seorang petani yang diundang untuk berbagi istirahat makan salah satu kambing ‘kaki menyedot tulang sumsum, kaki hewan tetap patah di pagi hari, dan anak itu dipaksa untuk melayani Thor sebagai pelayan untuk mengimbangi kerusakan.

Pandemonium

Oh Hellz Yeah.

Satyr, of legendary Black Metal band Satyricon sent a message of support to Dio, who recently was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

“I grew up as a huge Rainbow fan and records like ‘Rising’ were huge for me. We had heard a lot of speculation that things had turned for the worst for him but Satyricon and myself would like to wish him all of the best for getting through this and getting better in the future.”

This shows that Dio has inspired people from all over the world and in many different cultures.

Here’s a thing that could use some words alongside it.

The story goes: I listen to music like everyone else, and some of that music is from a long time ago. I’m interested in the history of American music, of blues and folk and country, the rural stuff from before the 1950’s, before everything went electric.

Context is everything. In music and art. The context of this music is pretty fascinating stuff, and I try to read what I can on the subject. Over the last few years it’s created this landscape in my head, this semi-fictional place full of imagery, full of scenery and characters and stories.

Drawing can be very interesting if you look at it in a stream-of-consciousness. All imaginative practice is, I suppose, instinctive by nature.

You draw what feels right where it feels right.

I don’t like approaching a composition that’s carved in stone. I like to start with a vague idea and just let it sort of unfold at it’s own pace.  It’s the same with collage art. The process is a bit like playing with a Ouija board: you gather all the pieces and just push them around the page until something happens.

I was once lucky enough to hear a lecture by German illustrator Thomas Fuchs (www.thomasfuchs.com) who said a number of things that got under my fingernails, particularly about the suggestive nature of the visual image. He said that most of the time you don’t even need to think of an idea: if you know where to look, and how to look, those ideas suggest themselves to you. They impose upon you.

And I think that’s about right. Some ideas really do give themselves to you. The shape of something, the texture, the colour, the size; in context, they tell you what to think. These things suggest ideas that are guilty by association. And then it’s so obvious you can’t believe you didn’t see it before.

The context of this image is: the music of the rural South, and what I associate with that environment. Not just from the music. But from the culture, and history. Especially prevalent is the religious association –  the rural American South of the 1920’s and 30’s lies in the shadow of church steeples and burning crosses.

Gospel music and blues music are brother and sister, one sacred and the other profane.  

The Lord’s music versus the Devil’s.

We are Holy, they are Pagan.  

In this context, the blues musicians are atavistic mutants from the ancient Greek woodlands, a physical perversion of carnal sin. Their songs were about lust, about genitals and intercourse and adultery. Make no mistake: half of these songs, these songs from the age of our grandfathers, these songs from an age we are always told was more innocent, these songs are about pussy.

So the players become satyrs, and the juke-joint dances they played become Dionysian frat parties in some Hellenistic myth.

From there it becomes a call and response thing. You look at the pagan religions of the ancients and the associations flow freely: the landscape becomes Mesopotamia, the Mississippi River becomes the Jordan, the Euphrates; the biblical inundation becomes the great flood of 1927 that crushed the levees; the death cults and slavery of Pharaonic Egypt become the mortality rate and servitude of post-Reconstruction existence.

Eventually you end up with this semi-mythological place, a surreal landscape where Hieronymus Bosch meets the cotton gin culture.

Harlequin Teen – September 29, 2009 (first published in 2004)

Elphame, a satyr goddess born to a human mother and centaur father, has never felt a part of life.  She has been worshipped and taken care of to the point no one feels comfortable enough with her to be free to speak to her like a friend.  She has always been on a pedestal in the eyes of the people in Partholon.

Elphame decides it is time to strike out on her own.  Along with her brother, she travels across the country to restore the long abandoned MacCallan Castle.  A century has passed since the terrible Fomorian battle that killed many of Elphame’s clansman.  While tales of ghosts keep most people away, Elphame feels the pull of the castle and knows deep in her soul she is meant to restore it and claim the castle as her own.  She is meant to become The MacCallan, the leader of the clan.

Love is something Elphame assumed she would never experience.  Who would want to love someone so clearly not human.  She loves her strong hoofed legs, but at the same time is aware how they set her apart from everyone around her.  She is completely caught off guard when she meets Lochlan, a hybrid Fomorian who claims to be her destiny.  But, what are Lochlan’s true intentions?  Can she trust the well-being of her clan for a chance at love?

ELPHAME’S CHOICE is a great romance.  Anyone who enjoys reading about days of warriors and castles will find the setting appealing and Elphame is a very strong character and wonderful role model for girl readers.  My major concern is this – I don’t think this should be marketed as a young adult novel.  I found my copy in the young adult section at Borders and as you can see from the publisher information, it is being rereleased by Harlequin Teen.  P.C. Cast first published this book in 2004 under Harlequin’s Luna imprint.  I realize Harlequin didn’t have a teen imprint at that time, but…. ELPHAME’S CHOICE contains clearly spelled out sex scenes with typical “romance” language.  I’m totally for allowing people (including teens) reading what they want to, but I think labeling it young adult and putting it on the young adult shelf is a little misleading.

2004 Edition Cover

There have been very few films within the last decade that have focused on ancient greek mythology, so it came as a surprise to me when I found this gem. ‘Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief ‘ focuses around the first of a series of books of the same name, written by Rick Riordan. Specifically the film will follow the events of its protagonist ‘Perseus ‘Percy’ Jackson‘, son of Poseidon. Although whilst dedicated to the ancient greek mythological aspect, the film is a modernised and unexpected tale of Percy’s ventures across America along with his demigod and satyr friends Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and Grover Underwood.

You may be pleased to know, that this is NOT a Disney film, so there is no chance of seeing Zac Efron or Demi Lovato. It is directed by the well known Chris Columbus, and is distributed by 20th Century Fox. The films titular Percy Jackson however, is played by one Logan Lerman. Regarding cast members, there is quite a team, with actors such as Steve Coogan (The Indian In The Cupboard, Around The World In 80 Days, Night Of The Museum), Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Kill Bill) and Pierce Brosnan (James Bond, The Matador, Mamma Mia!) whilst bringing a wave of new age actors to the table, such as Alexandria Daddario, Jake Abel and Rosario Dawson. The film is set for a February 10th, 2010 release date. Enjoy the trailer.

PLOT SUMMARY: Percy Jackson, a 12 year New Yorker, is labeled as a troubled kid and has been kicked out of 6 schools. He has ADHD and is dyslexic. His father left home before he was born and Percy is at odds with his disgusting step father. Nothing is going right for him at his new school – Yancy Academy. His mother finally sends him away to yet another school where he befriends a boy named Grover. He thinks that his pre-algebra teacher is a monster and tried to kill him so Percy accidentally vaporizes his teacher. Percy is constantly protecting Grover because the others are picking on him. One night Percy is having trouble focusing on studying for final exams and notices that Grover is missing. He begins to search for Grover. In the basement of the school, Percy overhears Grover speaking with one of their teachers. On his way home, Percy finds out that Grover is actually his “protector”. Percy’s mother finally realizes who Percy is and gets him to camp Half-Blood for safety, or so she thought. There he finds out that Grover is also a satyr when he comes to save Percy and his mother from an attack by a minotaur. Percy and Grover narrowly escape but Percy’s mother disappears in a gold shower. Percy, also known as Perseus, learns that camp Half-Blood is a secret camp and training ground for young demigods. Percy also learns that Poseidon is his real father. Poseidon has been accused by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt. It has now become Percy’s duty to return the lightning bolt or humankind will be destroyed. Thus the adventure begins with Percy’s encounters with characters from Greek mythology. The danger, suspense, and thrills ensue. Does Percy return the lightning bolt? What happens to Poseidon and Percy’s mother? What happens to Grover? Is humankind saved from destruction?

REVIEW:  The Lightning Thief is a great book based upon allusions to characters of Greek Mythology. It is full of suspense, thrills, and dangers. The reader’s attention is captured and maintained throughout the entire book. One is constantly making predictions trying to figure out what is going to happen next. The several examples of foreshadowing elements present in The Lightning Thief add to the excitement of Percy’s adventures.

yeah, he’s just another member of my weird imaginings. i’ve done it with pencils and technical pens (the ones i used in my drafting classes in college life). tech pens though has another kind of effect  when used in inking thus the term ‘pen and ink’ came about.  i’m no pro in using the standard quill points  thats been  mostly used by drawing fanatics and practically speaking, i just used whatever tools i have during those imaginative days.

Zu sehen ist ein Ausschnitt des fertigen Tonmodells von Kopf 10. Im Moment wird die Silikonform erstellt, aus der im Anschluss das Wachsmodell für den Guss hergestellt werden kann. Der wache Blick und das leichte satyrhafte Lächeln ist typisch für die dargestellte Person, die ich jedoch erst mit eigenem Profil vorstellen werde, wenn die Bronze fertig und fotografiert sein wird.

Der lebendige Blick verdankt sich einer kleinen Abänderung der Augengestaltung. Bei diesem Kopf habe ich die Pupillen als konkave Sphären, d.h. als kugelförmig vertiefte Schalen gestaltet. Dadurch entsteht Tiefe und ein reizvoller Lichtreflex im Auge, der an die Lichtreflexe der natürlichen Pupille erinnert.

Ich habe mir dabei den Effekt zunutze gemacht, dass eine Negativ-Form vom Gehirn als Negativ oder Positiv interpretiert werden kann. Man kann dieses “Umklappen” in der eigenen Wahrnehmung selbst ausprobieren, indem man aus ein bisschen Entfernung in das Innere einer Gussform blickt: schließt man nun ein Auge, wird die vorher noch als negativ (=konkav) wahrgenommene Hohlform plötzlich zum positiven (=konvexen) Körper im Raum. Dieses Umschalten kann man anschließend willkürlich herbeiführen, je nachdem auf welchen Aspekt man sich konzentriert.

Ich werde die Augenschalen später an der Bronze noch mit rotierenden Filzscheibchen polieren, so dass sie mehr glänzen. Ich verspreche mir davon, dass dieser Effekt damit noch deutlicher zutage tritt.

Und für die “Techniker” unter Euch, die diesen Blog so eifrig mitlesen noch ein Hinweis: ich habe die gleichmäßig runde Vertiefung dieser Augenschälchen mit einem sogenannten Kugelstopfer in den schon lederharten Ton eingepresst. Ein Kugelstopfer ist ein Werkzeug aus dem Dentalbereich, mit dem der Zahnarzt Füllungen herstellt. Wer wissen will, wie es aussieht, hier bitte.

Dieser Kopf hat noch ein paar weitere “Finessen”, wovon ich Euch aber in den nachfolgenden Artikeln berichten werde …

For those who might be interested, my latest article, “The Wise Man has Two Tongues: Images of The Satyr and the Peasant by Jordaens and Steen,” will appear in Myth in History, History in Myth, volume 182 in Brill’s Studies in Intellectual History series.  It is due out in August of 2009.

Here’s the article abstract:

“In the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Aesop’s Fables had widespread appeal in Netherlandish culture. In particular, we find many examples of the “Fable of the Satyr and the Peasant”. In the story a wary satyr rejects the perceived hypocrisy of the peasant, “blowing hot or cold” as the situation dictates—once to warm his cold hands, and again to cool his porridge.

The Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens’ name is most synonymous with representations of the theme, for, by one count, he created a dozen versions of the story in various media.  It was one of his most repeated, most popular subjects.

It is often noted that Jordaens’ images of “As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young” and “Twelfth Night” served as models for the Dutch artist Jan Steen.  It remains under-stated, however, that Steen also painted the Satyr and the Peasant fable several times in apparent emulation of Jordaens.

In this paper, I discuss the timing and execution of Steen’s paintings as evidence of competition with the older, more famous Antwerp artist. And, I ponder what the combination of Classical mythology and genre—a marriage of elite and popular culture—reveals about correspondances between Northern and Southern Netherlandish humanism.

The answers reveal much about the cross-fertilization between these two artists, and how they used mythology to explore the similarities and differences between their respective Netherlandish cultures and identities.”

“In 1975, a group of Dutch and British scholars published a conference volume of collected essays entitled Some Political Mythologies. That conference sought to examine the political myth as an object of historical study, particularly in the context of the tumultuous and exceptional history of the Low Countries. Thirty years later, a more diverse group of scholars gathered to re-examine the history of Dutch myth-making in light of developments in theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the role of myths in national identity, moral geography, and community formation. The results of their efforts appear in this volume, Myth in History: History in Myth. The essays cover developments in history, anthropology, cartography, philosophy, art history, and literature as they pertain to how the Dutch historically perceived these myths and how the myths have been treated by previous generations of historians.”

For better or worse and whether you like it or not, a Blogger Appreciation week has been declared. While it’s original intent is for designers to say thanks to bloggers, I’m going to use it as a spring board to finally reply to Winter and Elusyve’s “Who Inspires You?” challenge. The first person I’d like to honor is the same now as it was back in January: Ashia Tomsen.

If it wasn’t for Ashia, I wouldn’t be blogging. She was the one who actually told me to do it. When winter break rolled around, Lifestyles of the Broke and Notorious (o hai, not RUNAWAY?) sprung up. Looking back… I can’t believe it’s almost been six months. Due to my shy nature towards people I think highly of, I did not poke the big A during that time; after a rough patch in my life, she poked me again to see how I was doing. Those few words lately have given me the strength I need to keep moving forward, especially when teamed with other kind acts from people.

The look is based off of three things that characterize Ashia: satyr boots, finger tape and blond ‘do. As with a lot of the stylists I admire, she does not have one look- she could be fantasy, she could be casual, she could be an abstract. I chose to go with a grunge look, for she’s been having a penchant for it in texture play lately. Lurv you so much, Ash!

Die schwer fantasy-lastige Bildhauerin Kim Graham hat sich Bocksfüsse gebastelt, im wesentlichen intelligent gemachte Stelzen mit beweglichen Füssen dran.

Auf dem Video unten sieht man sie in Aktion, einmal als Cyborgvariante und anschliessend mit Fell verkleidet zum Kindererschrecken.

Für angehende Berufsgenossen hat sie einen Ratschlag parat: “Jeder Bildhauer, der grosse Objekte machen will, muss schweissen lernen”.

Zur Steamcon (eine Steampunk Con in Seattler, 23.10.09) plant sie eine Version mit Getriebe und beweglichen Teilen.

Ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich Kim nachts im Dunkeln begegnen möchte.
