At least 44 people were killed in Jeddah after a heavy downpour. The rains caused a major infrastructure failure and the results were disastrous. My heart goes out to all Jeddawis.

This would not have happened if the people of Jeddah had a say in how their city is run. This would not have happened if there was transparency and accountability in how our country is governed.

I’m beyond angry and disgusted.

Overview

For those FHWS readers who may be less familiar, or those who enjoy a review and pictures, here is a brief overview of Hajj, and some excellent pictures of last year’s Hajj (December 2008).

Hajj, or the Pilgrimage to Mecca, is the 5th of the 5 Pillars of Islam. All Muslims are to complete the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime, if they are physically and financially capable. Poorer Muslims may save a lifetime to make the journey, while those who are wealthier and live closer may make the pilgrimage many times.

As the keeper of the Two Holy Mosques it is incumbent on Saudi Arabia to coordinate the logistics of the annual Hajj, which unlike the Umrah, or “lesser pilgrimage”, must be done on the same days in the Islamic calendar each year, from the 7th to 13th day of the 12th month, Dhu al-Hijjah. It does so through the Ministry of Hajj.

Each year quotas are set for Muslims coming from each country including Saudi, and Saudis are not allowed to participate more than once every 5 years. Special Hajj visas are issued, and specially designated tourist agencies coordinate travel and accommodation. Some pilgrims go as a family, some with a group from their workplace, or neighbourhood, or through an organization. Others are essentially there as individuals through a tourist agency.

Challenges, beyond the long distances now traveled, include overcrowding, stampedes, a past unsafe bridge, political and sectarian differences, and now H1N1 flu. Saudi Arabia has taken measures to deal with these challenges, including a comprehensive and admirable public health plan for this year’s Hajj. Modifications of the ritual have occurred to maximize safety while preserving the religious meaning and symbolism. For example, it is not necessary to kiss the Kaaba, one may point; and, stones are no longer thrown at pillars, but at walls with catch basins.

Of course, none of this detracts from the deeply spiritual experience for those who are able to perform Hajj in any year, including this one. The impact is often profound, whether on an individual basis—as for a family member who as a secondary consideration regained faith that she would have a son, and did—or on a broader basis, as Malcolm X’s experience, of the multiple nations and races of the umrah among those gathered for Hajj, had on his subsequent conversion to Sunni Islam, and what that meant for him and the Nation of Islam.

In April 2008 David Clingingsmith of Case Western Reserve University, Asim Ijaz Khwaja of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and Michael Kremer of the Harvard University Department of Economics, the Brookings Institution, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and the Center for Global Development published a Faculty Working Paper entitled: “Estimating the Impact of the Hajj: Religion and Tolerance in Islam’s Global Gathering”.

From the Abstract:
“We estimate the impact on pilgrims of performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Our method compares successful and unsuccessful applicants in a lottery used by Pakistan to allocate Hajj visas. Pilgrim accounts stress that the Hajj leads to a feeling of unity with fellow Muslims, but outsiders have sometimes feared that this could be accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims. We find that participation in the Hajj increases observance of global Islamic practices such as prayer and fasting while decreasing participation in localized practices and beliefs such as the use of amulets and dowry. It increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic sects and leads to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater acceptance of female education and employment. Increased unity within the Islamic world is not accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims. Instead, Hajjis show increased belief in peace, and in equality and harmony among adherents of different religions. The evidence suggests that these changes are more a result of exposure to and interaction with Hajjis from around the world, rather than religious instruction or a changed social role of pilgrims upon return.”

This is a remarkable finding, in that they were able to analyze what should be logical outcomes, but had not been proven in such a manner. That Hajjis would have a greater sense of oneness with the Ummah is an important finding, but more remarkable in some senses are their greater adherence to Islamic, as opposed to cultural practices, and the greater liberalization of attitudes towards women, as well as toward non-Muslims. That these attitude shifts result from the benefits of exposure to other Hajjis from around the world, rather than religious teaching or increased social status, argues for increased interaction among Muslims globally.

Yet, at the same time, these findings are in keeping with the core beliefs of Islam, and with the purpose of Hajj–to demonstrate solidarity among Muslims and submission to Allah. This is what distinguishes the Hajj from the pre-Islamic pilgrimages to Mecca, which included tribes of the Arabian peninsula of all faiths worshiping multiple gods or idols, and also Christians worshiping Jesus and Mary. Although the pilgrimage is believed to extend back thousands of years to Abraham’s (Ibrahim’s) first journey with Hagar and Ishmael, the current form of the pilgrimage is the one that marked the first time Muslims only, as a group led by the Prophet Mohamed, performed the pilgrimage. Current rituals are based on those which were retained from pre-Islamic ones, and those established by the Prophet and his followers.

After initial purification, and changing into ihram clothing, the pilgrims move from Mecca to Mina where they spend the day. The next day, on the first day of the Hajj, each person returns to Mecca to Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, The Sacred Mosque, and walks counter-clockwise seven times around the Kaaba; and, on each circumambulation, either kisses or points with the right hand to the Black Stone in its corner, praying each time. Prayers are then offered at the Place of Abraham, a specific site within the mosque near the Kaaba; or, due to space, anywhere within the mosque. On the same day, each pilgrim walks/runs back and forth 7 times between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, symbolizing Hagar’s desperate search for water for Ishmael. Each drinks water from the Zamzam Well which was created for Hagar when the Angel sent by Allah struck the ground with his heel (or wing).

On the second day, each pilgrim spends the night in prayer in Mina; and, on the third, goes to the plains of Mount Arafat to stand in vigil and pray. This is the crux of the pilgrimage, which is considered invalid if the pilgrim does not spend the afternoon near the site of the Prophet’s Last Sermon, Mount Arafat, the Mountain of Forgiveness. At sunset the pilgrims leave Arafat and go to Muzdalifah, where they gather stones for the next day.

On the fourth day, each pilgrim throws 7 pebbles as part of a ritual Stoning of the Devil, in defiance of the Devil’s challenges to Abraham when Allah asked him to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Afterward they shave their heads, and sacrifice an animal as a symbol of Allah sparing Ishmael. At the same time, Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal, often a sheep, as the opening of the celebration of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice.

On the 5th day, the pilgrims re-visit the mosque in Mecca to circumambulate the Kaaba again, as a symbol of being in a hurry to respond to, and show love for, Allah. This, too, is an obligatory part of the Hajj. That night is spent back at Mina. The next afternoon, and on the following day, the pilgrims must again throw 7 pebbles at each of the three pillars in Mina. The must leave Mina for Mecca before sunset; or, if they are unable to leave, and stay another night, must again perform the stoning ritual the next day, before returning to Mecca. A farewell circumambulation of the Kaaba is performed before leaving Mecca.

The Hajj is now completed, but many pilgrims also travel to Medina and the holy mosque there, Al-Masjid al-Nabawi. The Mosque of the Prophet contains the Prophet’s tomb, and a very special area, ar-Rawdah an-Nabawiyah, that from the Prophet’s tomb to his pulpit, considered a part of Jannah. Pilgrims also visit the graves of the companions of the Prophet.

It’s already Thursday here, and I am cooking a turkey as I write this.  Several of us Americans, and one close Syrian friend, will be gathering late this afternoon for an evening dinner.  I am bringing the turkey and stuffing.  Others will bring the complementary dishes.  Mmmm….

Then, we plan to watch a movie and/or try to stream one of the NFL games across the Internet, hoping to create a sense of Thanksgiving back home.  Thanksgiving is my personal favorite holiday.  So, I always want to make something out of it…no matter where I am at.  It’s not quite the same here; but, just as when I was in the Navy overseas, you do the best you can to make it is nice as you are able.

To you and all of yours:   A VERY HAPPY, HAPPY, SAFE AND ENJOYABLE THANKSGIVING!!!!

And, if you have a chance to give holiday greetings to one of our men or women serving in the Armed Forces, especially overseas, please do so.  As someone who has served overseas, in the military, during the Holidays, I can tell you just how important it is to know your friends and family are thinking of you.

Please use a designated, sober driver if you drink during your festivities.

If you are one of the few people on the planet who does not yet know, I will be leaving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in December, just in time to be home for Christmas and New Years.  My contract is ending, and there is no follow-on work to keep a number of us busy.

It’s sure going to be nice to be home, though I am not sure how we’ll fill the financial coffers.  We’ll manage somehow.  We always do.  But, so far, the timing seems right to end this chapter in our lives.  I’ll have more musings on this subject in the future.

The blog will not end.  I have a lot more to say on many subjects.  I’ll bet you’re shocked by that, huh?

Continuing a discussion of things it is good to know if you’re coming to visit, live in, or work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

1.  A4 Paper – This will only apply to Americans, actually.  In the U.S., the standard paper size is 8-1/2″ X 11″, or Letter size as it is also known.  Because Americans believe themselves to be the center of the universe (and it’s true to some extent), they think everyone else in the world uses their standards.  This is not the case…certainly not with paper size.  The standard paper size over here is A4, which is slightly longer than Letter size.  This can be disconcerting when you print out a document from Word, and it is set-up for Letter size, only to find the printer has A4 sheets in the feeder.  To make it worse, some folks DO use Letter; so, you often won’t know what you are going to get until AFTER you print.  So, you always need to check.

2.  You Can’t Move Cars Involved In Accidents – Unlike in the U.S. (I don’t know about the UK or other European countries), you may NOT move a car involved in an accident here in Saudi Arabia.  You will be arrested if you do so before the police tell you that you may.  There are a lot of accidents in Riyadh, and this particular law causes an awful lot of traffic congestion issues.  Just a couple of weeks ago, I was about to walk into a restaurant and witnessed a wreck occur across the street.  The accident involved about six cars, on a major boulevard, so it caused a lot of havoc.  Then, going the other way, two lookie-loo cars got into a wreck at the corresponding spot on the near side.  More congestion.  Each major boulevard or avenue has a service street parallel it on each side for easier and safer access to stores.  Two more lookie-loos had another major wreck, with major damage at approximately the same spot.  None of these cars could be moved until the police said they could be.  We’re talking nearly three hours between the first accident to the clearance of the last automobile.

3. Dust, Dust, Everywhere Dust – I grew up in the Panhandle of Texas.  That means dust.  You can dust the house and come back an hour later to find more dust.  It’s a way of life.  It’s also about half the effort required to stay on top of the dust here in Riyadh.  Even if you keep our windows closed, you will find layers of dust on everything, regardless how often you dust.  Lots of folks employ maids (very cheap labor), so they don’t care.  But, if you do your own housekeeping, this is one of the most frustrating aspects of living here.  And, the dust is often red, which can wreak havoc on your white linens.  Dust is always in the air.  In fact, about the only time there is no dust in the air is right after a rain shower.  Given how often it rains hear, maybe 3 times a year, you can imagine how much dust is floating in the air – even on a clear day.

Ah, good point, loyal blog readers. First, I must state that everyone I’ve ever met that DOESN’T celebrate Christmas is NOT offended when people tell them “Merry Christmas”. I celebrate Christmas; and when (and it happens) someone says “Happy Hanukkah!” to ME, I’m not offended. Why would I be? The only ones who would be offended by any Christ loving individuals are those who are hellbent on destroying the INFIDELS. Who is that? Oh, why the Muslim Islamic Extremists!

“So what does this have to do with Best Buy?”

“What the fuck is Eid-al-Adha?!” Well, I’ll tell ya.

Eid-al-Adha is “Festival of Sacrifice”; a holiday celebrated by Muslims. Eid al-Adha occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan. Best Buy won’t mention any OTHER “holiday” in order to avoid being offensive… Oh, except for the Muslim holiday. Now that a Muslim lives in the White House; I guess it’s okay. But wait! They didn’t advertise Christmas when we’ve had Christian presidents, did they? NEIN.

Obama’s Grandmother in Mecca for ‘Hajj’ Ceremony

The grandmother of US president Barack Obama has arrived in Saudi Arabia for the ‘Hajj’ or Islamic pilgrimage to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, a Saudi daily said on Wednesday. Sarah Hussein Obama, 87, is being accompanied by a nephew and Obama’s cousin, Omran.

On Wednesday Sarah Obama was in the valley of Mina with an African delegation, according to the Saudi daily Okaz.

Obama, the mother of the American president’s father, lives in a village in Kenya and is one of the many guests of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud.

About two million Muslims converge on Mecca each year for the Hajj pilgrimage but Saudi officials were expecting fewer pilgrims this year due to the threat of the H1N1 virus known as swine flu.

Crowds of pilgrims have been converging on the holy city of Mecca in recent days, and started the Hajj rites on Wednesday.

At the weekend, Saudi health authorities said that four people attending the Hajj had died from the H1N1 virus but sought to play down the risk.

The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligation for all able-bodied Muslims to attend at least once during their lives, provided they can afford it.

United Arab Emirates’ property tycoon Sulaiman Al Fahim is personally sponsoring Sarah Obama’s trip.

It appears that King Abdullah is now making his moves towards significant reforms in Saudi Arabia.  KAUST is up and running as the first international and co-educational university in the Kingdom.  And recently Saudi Arabia announced its top 10 projects which are further indicative of major changes which will likely to lead towards additional reform.  Last but not least, there is also a proposal circulating to allow female lawyers to represent female clients within the Saudi courts.

The Top 10 Saudi projects according to Construction Week from 10 to number one are as follows:

10- Jeddah Gate Development

Jeddah gate is a US $1.6 billion project under construction and expected to be completed in ten years.  The projects is comprised of constructing both new residential and commercial space in the vicinities of King Abdullah Street and Abdullah Al Suleiman Streets in Jeddah.

9- Haramain High Speed Rail Project

Haramain High Speed Rail is a US $1.9 billion project and expected to be completed in 2013.  This project is for the construction of a much needed rail link connecting the two Holy Cities of Makkah and Medina via Jeddah.

8- Jizan Economic City (JEC)

The Jizan Economic City is a US $3 billion project anticipated to be completed by 2020.  This is a massive project which will be comprised of residential, commercial and industrial zones.

7- North-South Railway

The North-South Railway project is a US $3.5 billion project already under construction and expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010.  In addition to transporting passengers in Saudi Arabia it will also be used for the transportation of minerals mined at Az-Zubairah and Al Jalamid to the processing facilities located at Ras Azur Port.  Some Saudi residents along the new railway will have to become accustomed to hearing the whistles of passing trains.

6-  Knowledge Economic City (KEC)

The Knowledge Economic City project is a US $8 billion project which is expected to be built in phases over a ten year period.  The project is to build a Knowledge Economic City in Medina which will help establish a catalyst for knowledge based industries in Medina.  Knowledge Economic City Developers claim that KEC will generate 20,000 new job opportunities.

5-  Prince Abdulaziz bin Mousaed Economic City

The Prince Abdulaziz Mousaed Economic City project is a US $8 billion project which is start in 2010 and completed in phases by 2022.  The project is to build a city within Hail with 12 distinct components for trade and services in sectors such as agriculture and food processing, mining, education, housing and entertainment.

4-  Landbridge Project

The Landbridge Project is a US $10 billion project.  A BOT consortium consisting of Trabot, Saudi Oger, Bin Laden Group and Al-Mada will construct a 950km railway network.  The railway will connect Jeddah to Damman and King Fahd Industrial port with Jubail Industrial City.

3-   Princess Noura bint AbdulRahman University for Women in Riyadh

The Princess Noura bint AbdulRahman University for Women in Riyadh is a US $11.5 billion project and anticipated completion is the first quarter of 2012.  This project is construction of a new university for women north of Riyadh.  The university will include administration buildings, 13 faculties, 700-bed student hospital, laboratories, research centers and residential housing for both students and staff.  This university will accommodate 26,000 students.

2-  Sudair City Development

The Sudair City Development is a US $40 billion project which will be a mixed use development including residential, commercial, entertainment and educational facilities.  Sudair City will be located north of Riyadh.

1-King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC)

The King Abdullah Economic City is a US $50 billion project located in Rabigh.  This massive project is construction of a city which will be divided into Industrial and Residential Zones as well as a Sea Resort and Sea Port.

In addition to the top ten projects this posting would not be complete without citing another significant project under the jurisdiction of the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA).  This project is the construction and implementation of light rail metro system within the city of Riyadh.  The metro will have two lines consisting of 23 and 13 stations respectively.  A metro system in Riyadh will be a real plus where the city streets are already over-congested.  Although there is some controversy on how well a metro system will be received in Riyadh due to perception of those who will use the metro.  There are factions of Saudis who believe using public transport such as a metro system is degrading and that the metro is oriented more for expats and foreign laborers who are already accustomed to mass transit systems like metros.  The announcement of a metro in Riyadh also does not address whether certain cars will be designated as women or women/families only.  Nor does the announcement state if the metro would close during prayer times.

However in my personal opinion all of these large and costly developments are signs of both reform and progress in Saudi Arabia and initiated by King Abdullah.  I see these plans as steps which will also lead the way to the time when women will be able to drive in Saudi Arabia.

In your view, which of these projects is the most significant for Saudi Arabia and why?

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new global version of Amazon’s Kindle for Christmas, be aware that there are still quite a few places that the global version will NOT work.  I was disappointed to find that the new version still will not work in my country.

Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries.   I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in (below).

It’s also interesting to note the PATTERN of groups of countries where the Kindle doesn’t work–some countries probably lack satellite coverage or delivery systems, while others probably don’t WANT readers to be able to download whatever they want by satellite.

Several years ago, my aunt pointed out something I had never noticed: the great frequency with which articles about – and editorials against – magic and sorcery appear in Gulf newspapers. I thought of her observation when I read earlier this month that Ali Sibat had been sentenced to death for his work as a television psychic. Sibat is Lebanese and lived worked in Lebanon, but was arrested in Saudi Arabia while there on a religious pilgrimage last year.

Here’s an excerpt from the latest Associated Press article on the story:

Saudi Arabia should overturn a death sentence imposed on a Lebanese national convicted of practicing witchcraft during a visit to the conservative kingdom, an international human rights group said in a report late Tuesday.

Human Rights Watch also called on the Saudi government to halt “its increasing use of charges of ‘witchcraft,’ crimes that are vaguely defined and arbitrarily used.”

The report highlights the ongoing complaints over the Saudi justice system, which, while based on Islamic law, leaves a wide leeway to individual judges and can often result in dramatically inconsistent sentences.

Ali Sibat, a Lebanese psychic who made predictions on a satellite TV channel from his home in Beirut, was arrested by religious police in the holy city of Medina during a pilgrimage there in May 2008 and then sentenced to death Nov. 9.

Sibat is one of scores of people reported arrested every year in the kingdom by local papers for practicing sorcery, witchcraft, black magic and fortune-telling. These practices are considered polytheism by the government of this deeply religious Muslim country.

Sibat seems to have been arrested somewhat by chance: he was recognized while in Medina, and those who recognized him informed the local authorities.

Here’s a September article from Arab News, the English-language Saudi newspaper, that addresses the issue of magic (or sorcery, as it is often called in the Gulf papers). It incorporates several common themes: the sinfulness of magic and its historic omnipresence; the connection between sorcerers/magicians and 1) Africans or dark-skinned people, 2) avarice, 3) women; and the real presence of evil in this world, which religion can address but magic cannot.

JEDDAH: Hardly a day passes without a local newspaper reporting the arrest of a sorcerer in the Kingdom, something that is indicative of the widespread meddling in sorcery. It is, however, not just sorcerers who make money — those who treat (or claim to treat) magic and the evil eye are also rolling in dollars. While there is mystery surrounding how magic is done, some weak-hearted people end up resorting to sorcerers to mend troubled marriages, ensure husbands remain faithful or cause harm to adversaries.

At the same time, magic is an old human practice, which has existed in many countries and religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism.

Sara Mohammed, a single 28-year-old woman, said a sorcerer once told her she was unmarried because someone had cast a spell on her. “I have been facing problems all my life and I was looking for something to change my fortune for the better. A relative told me that she knew a man who could help me because I may be under some kind of spell,” Sara said.

The man who her relative introduced her turned out to be an African sorcerer who had been residing in the Kingdom for some time. Sara visited him at his home, which she described as a “rotten place with a terrible stench.”

Afraid to go alone, she took her cousin along. “I went in and his wife offered us tea. We refused to drink anything there. My cousin was laughing and giggling as she felt the entire setup was just a big joke. The man then began asking me about my situation and held up a small cup filled with olive oil,” she added. Sara laughs for a few seconds and then explains that the sorcerer then began acting strange by whispering into the cup. “He then said my ex-fiancé had cast a spell on me and that he could undo it for SR1,800. I told him that he was asking for far too much money. He held the cup up once again and started talking and haggling with this supposed jinn inside,” she said, laughing.

“That was four years ago. I now only seek Allah’s help,” she said.

People underestimate how serious a sin magic actually is. Some people pay large amounts of money to sorcerers, believing they will eventually give them happiness. Abeer Saleh said some members of her family are so infatuated with magic that they act strange and perform nonsensical rituals.

“Two elderly members of my family who are sisters met a sorceress who told them that their sister-in-law had cast a spell on them. They believed everything that she told them,” said Saleh. She added that the two sisters were experiencing some domestic problems and in the course of their fascination with magic even claimed to have seen the ground split open and their sister-in-law appear and cast a spell on them. “They then began selling their personal belongings and even furniture to pay the sorceress to break the spell,” said Saleh, adding that other members of the family even tried to explain to them that magic was forbidden in Islam, but to no avail. “They’re still, even to this day, engrossed in weird rituals. They burned coriander and black pepper at my sister’s wedding to protect her wedding dress from harm,” she said, adding that her relatives are educated women and not ignorant.

Reports surfaced in July that divers searching for the body of a young woman who drowned off Jeddah’s Corniche discovered 22 bottles containing papers with names scrawled on them, as well as pieces of jewelry and locks of hair. It is thought these items were spells cast into the sea as part of some magic ritual. Some sheikhs cure those afflicted with magic by reciting verses of the Qur’an over Zamzam water, olive oil or honey which they then administer to those affected.

Some of these people have even developed reputations of being very proficient in what they do and are known to charge around SR100 or more per visit. One sheikh who helps fight black magic and the effects of the evil eye said that magic is everywhere. The sheikh, who asked not to be named, charges SR100 per visit. He even has an office where he receives clients.

“Black magic is widely practiced nowadays. It’s all over the Internet and even in toy stores,” he said giving the example of Ouija boards, which are sold in stores.

A woman told Arab News that she went to this sheikh after her son decided to break off his engagement. “I just felt my son was behaving strangely. It was out of character. The girl he was engaged to was suitable for him,” she said. “The sheikh treated my son with verses of the Qur’an and Zamzam water. He then abandoned his intention and then married that girl. They are very happy,” she added.

I’m personally not a great fan of astrologists, psychics, etc. But this story is rather horrifying: a man goes to the holiest cities of Islam to perform an act of piety, and is arrested and sentenced to death for breaking the law – a violation that occurred in another country, under a different set of laws. Try this first video.  It’s a very cleverly done Canadian sitcom, filmed in Toronto, Ontario, and Indian Head, Saskatchewan.   The first episode (above) was filmed in Regina.  Little Mosque is the most popular sitcom in Canada and has been syndicated in France, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Turkey, Israel, the West Bank, and African countries.  It is light-hearted, and family-oriented.  Expats who have lived in Muslim countries will especially enjoy this humorous series!
