Während die Apostel noch von Jesus direkt belehrt und geschult werden, kennt Paulus Jesus nicht. Ist Jesus bei Paulus demnach nur eine “metaphysische Figur, der man alles unterschieben konnte“, wie es der Philosoph Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) einmal kommentierte? Paulus zeigt zumindest kein nachweisliches Interesse am Leben des Jesus von Nazareth, an dem er sich wie an einem Vorbild hätte orientieren können.

Die ersten urchristlichen Gemeinden wurden nach dem Zeugnis der Bibel von Gott bzw. Christus unmittelbar durch das “Prophetische Wort” geführt (vgl. z. B. Johannes 16, 13; Apostelgeschichte 2, 17-18; 1. Korinther 12, 28). Demnach sprach Christus aus der geistigen Welt durch Prophetenmund zu den Menschen, und nach der Erzählung in der Apostelgeschichte war die “Menge der Gläubigen” “ein Herz und eine Seele” (4, 32). “Sie blieben beständig in der Lehre der Apostel und in der Gemeinschaft und im Brotbrechen und im Gebet” (Apostelgeschichte 2, 42), sie taten Gutes an ihren Nächsten “und fanden Wohlwollen beim ganzen Volk” (Apostelgeschichte 2, 47). In dieser Zeit kam Saulus, später Paulus genannt, hinzu und gab offenbar den ersten größeren Anlass für Unstimmigkeiten …

Saulus aus Tarsus in Kleinasien (weitgehend identisch mit der heutigen Türkei) ist als jüdischer Pharisäer ein erbitterter Gegner von Jesus von Nazareth und verfolgt die urchristliche Gemeinde. Dann erfolgt ein Einschnitt in seinem Leben: In einer Vision glaubt er eines Tages, die Stimme des Mannes aus Nazareth zu hören, und er glaubt auch, ihn zu sehen. Unmittelbar im Anschluss daran wird der urchristliche Prophet Hananias zu ihm geschickt, um Saulus seinen neuen Auftrag zu übermitteln (Apostelgeschichte 9, 10 ff.). Nach diesen Erlebnissen ist Paulus davon überzeugt, dass Jesus in der Tat der “Christus” war, das heißt, der Gesandte Gottes, der Israel verheißene Befreier bzw. Erlöser. Saulus orientiert sich um. In Zukunft will er für ihn kämpfen, nicht mehr gegen ihn – so wie es ihm durch das Prophetische Wort mitgeteilt wird (9, 15).
Doch anstatt sich für seinen großen Auftrag von der Urgemeinde zurüsten zu lassen, ist er von Anfang an nicht bereit, sich in die bestehende Gemeinschaft einzuordnen. Er betont sogar, dass er sich nach seiner Umkehr nicht mit den anderen Urchristen besprach. Erst nach drei Jahren besucht er nach seinen eigenen Angaben für zwei Wochen Petrus und reist anschließend wieder durch die Lande (Galaterbrief 1, 16-18). Wörtlich schreibt er unter anderem: “Ich … ging auch nicht hinauf nach Jerusalem zu denen, die vor mir Apostel waren, sondern zog nach Arabien und kehrte wieder zurück nach Damaskus”. Stattdessen beginnt er aus eigenem Entschluss mit dem Predigen. Damit widerspricht Paulus selbst der offenbar idealisierenden Darstellung seiner Bekehrung in der Apostelgeschichte, wonach er sich sogleich zu den Jüngern in Damaskus und Jerusalem gehalten habe. (1) Dies tat er nicht.

Und schon bald stellt sich heraus, dass Paulus die christliche Lehre mit seinen römischen Vorstellungen vermischt (siehe dazu die weiteren Ausführungen, z. B. hier). Deshalb kommt es dort, wo er bei seinen Reisen bereits urchristliche Gruppen vorfindet, zu Unstimmigkeiten und Konflikten (siehe unten). Paulus lässt sich jedoch nichts sagen und sich nicht korrigieren. Im Gegenteil: Als es erst nach 14 Jahren (!) zu ersten offiziellen Gesprächen mit den Hauptverantwortlichen der urchristlichen Bewegung kommt, weist Paulus seinerseits Petrus heftig zurecht und “widerstand ihm ins Angesicht”, wie er es laut Bibel selber schreibt (Galaterbrief 2). Der Streit mit Petrus, den Paulus offen der Heuchelei bezichtigt, entzündet sich an den jüdischen Wurzeln des Urchristentums und unter anderem auch an der Frage nach dem urchristlichen Mahl (Näheres dazu im Teil 2). Doch die Unterschiede zwischen Paulus einerseits und den “Aposteln” (den von Jesus selbst eingesetzten Hauptverantwortlichen für sein Werk) und Jesus von Nazareth andererseits sind noch viel weit reichender …

Kein Interesse an Jesus

Während die Apostel noch von Jesus direkt belehrt und geschult wurden, kannte Paulus Jesus nicht. Stattdessen hatte er ausgerechnet die pharisäische Schulung der Gegner des Mannes aus Nazareth genossen. Doch anstatt sich so viel wie möglich von Jesus berichten zu lassen und sich so weit wie möglich an ihm als Vorbild zu orientieren, erklärt Paulus sein Defizit einfach als belanglos. Und er schreibt selbstbewusst: “Auch wenn wir Christus gekannt haben nach dem Fleisch [auf die anderen Apostel bezogen], so kennen wir ihn doch jetzt so nicht mehr” (2. Korintherbrief 5, 16). Dieser Satz wäre gar nicht unbedingt falsch, wenn das von Paulus so genannte heutige “Kennen” von Christus mit dem übereinstimmt, was Jesus von Nazareth einst als Mensch seinen Zeitgenossen gelehrt und ihnen vorgelebt hatte. Doch woher will Paulus wissen, ob der “Christus” aus seiner Vision und in seiner Vorstellung mit dem Christus übereinstimmt, der in Jesus von Nazareth unter den Menschen lebte? Paulus kannte ihn ja gar nicht als Mensch, und er hätte als ein wahrer Nachfolger von Jesus alles daran setzen müssen, so viel wie nur irgendwie möglich von ihm und seiner Zeit auf der Erde zu seiner eigenen Orientierung in Erfahrung zu bringen: Was hat Jesus in dieser Situation gesagt? Wie hat er hier reagiert? Gibt es von ihm eine Aussage zu dieser Problematik? Usw. usf. Doch das tat er offenbar nicht. Und so wirft ihm der Philosoph Friedrich Nietzsche auch mit gutem Grund vor, Jesus, der Christus, scheine bei ihm nur mehr “ein bloßes Motiv” zu sein, eine “metaphysische Figur, der man alles unterschieben konnte”.

Und in der Tat: Anstatt zu fragen, was Jesus gelehrt hat, deutet Paulus das Leben von Jesus vor allem nach dem Muster heidnischer Mysterienreligionen und des Kaiserkults, wo von sterbenden und wieder auferstehenden Göttern die Rede ist, an denen der Gläubige durch Identifikation bzw. durch magische Übungen Anteil haben könne. Gleichermaßen knüpft er an den jüdischen Opferkult an und interpretiert ihn neu: Während strenggläubige Juden durch Tieropfer einen angeblichen Zorn Gottes besänftigen wollen, erklärt Paulus kurzerhand, dass das Blut, das Jesus bei seiner Hinrichtung vergossen hatte, bei Gott angeblich ein für alle mal sühnende Wirkung hätte (Römerbrief 3, 25), so dass es keiner Tieropfer mehr bedürfe.

Die Umdeutung

Zwar war auch Jesus ein Gegner der Tieropfer. Doch im Unterschied zu Paulus hatte er einen Gott verkündet, der überhaupt kein “Sühnopfer” benötigt und nie ein solches Opfer benötigt hatte. (2) Stattdessen wünscht der Gott, den Jesus verkündet, dass alle Seine Kinder Ihm ihr Herz öffnen, Schritt für Schritt ihr Ego “opfern” und für ihren Nächsten da sind. Paulus hingegen kehrt wieder zurück zu den alten vorchristlichen Gottesvorstellungen der Menschen (Gotteszorn, Sühnopfer) und deutet diese nur auf Christus hin um. Der Höhepunkt seiner Umdeutung besteht schließlich darin, dass man durch den bloßen Glauben an ein solches Sühnopfer “gerecht” werden könne – also “ohne Verdienst”, d. h. ohne das rechte Tun. Dies ist eine wesentliche Botschaft des Paulus, und es war eine angenehme Botschaft für das Volk, weil auf diese Weise eine hohe Ethik und Moral zwar wünschenswert, aber letztlich entbehrlich war. Mit dem unbequemen Jesus von Nazareth hatte das jedoch nichts mehr zu tun. Denn Jesus lehrte das Halten der Zehn Gebote und der Bergpredigt, und er sagte immer wieder: “Tu das, so wirst du leben” (Lukas 10, 27). Oder: In das Reich Gottes kommen, “die den Willen tun meines Vaters im Himmel” (Matthäus 7, 21). Oder: Wer seine Rede “tut”, “der gleicht einem klugen Mann” (Matthäus 7, 24). Oder: “Alles nun, was ihr wollt, dass euch die Leute tun sollen, das tut ihr ihnen auch! Das ist das Gesetz und die Propheten” (Matthäus 7, 12). Oder: Was ihr getan habt einem von diesen meinen geringsten Brüdern, das hat ihr mir getan (Matthäus 25, 40; siehe auch V. 25). Und vieles mehr. Paulus spricht dagegen vom “Glauben”, der einen Menschen “gerecht” mache (vor allem im Römerbrief, Kapitel 3 und 4).

Nero and Apollo: A Psychological Study

Introduction:

The religious religious symbolism of the festivities during the crowning of Tiridates has been insufficiently interpreted in the existing body of secondary literature. But as I shall prove in this paper, religion — or better, the deliberate and ruthless use of religion as a tool of expansionist policy — is at the core of the peace negotiations between Parthia and Rome, and it continues to provide the backdrop for Nero’s seemingly erratic behavior before and after the coronation ceremonies at Puteolis.

1. Family Ties and Cultic Background:

Tiridates, the prospective king of Armenia, was the older brother of the Parthian King of Kings Vologeses, who himself was the son of a concubine, a circumstance which would have excluded him from sucession in normal circumstances. Exactly why Vologeses, the bastard son, assumed the kingship and why Tiridates was excluded from what would appear a birth right to succeed his father has not been analyzed in the existing body of historical research. Similarly, the reasoning as to why Tiridates would have been offered the comparatively minor, poor, disputed and dangerous Kingdom of Armenia remains a suitable subject for speculation.

As member of the Parthian royal family, both Vologeses and Tiridates were high priests of the Zoroastrian cult, commonly associated with the Magi, who formed a large portion of the national council. For Zoroastrians, the sun represented the eye of Mithra. When Zoroastrians prayed in the open air, they turned toward the sun or the element representing the sun, fire. Thus, when Tiridates stood in the open Forum Romanum facing the sunlit Emperor, and worshipped him as he did Mithra, he was in essence worshipping the sun. Nero, with his reddish curls and beard, and seated on a gilded stage on gilded furniture, at this very moment becomes the incarnation of the avatar of the Iranian god of light.

This dual role of Nero at the coronation ceremonies is key to understanding the diplomatic issues involved. Being a representative or chief cultic functionary of the sun himself, the oldest brother of the Parthian King of Kings receives the diadem of Armenian kingship not from the head of the Roman state and not from the hand of his younger bastard brother (who occupies the peacock throne of Parthia), but from a god, from Mithra himself.

2. Nero as Sun God:

For Nero this is not an unwelcome turn of events. While those emperors deified after their deaths, such as Claudius, whom Nero’s tutor Seneca lampooned in his Apolocyntosis, became part of official Roman worship, the Romans themselves clearly differentiate between the words deus (god) and divus (divine or deified). Indeed, Roman custom would have considered a sacrilege worthy of death for a mortal man to call himself Deus. It is important to note that the Greeks did not make this difference, using the word theos for both gods and deified emperors.

But by awarding the kingship to Tiridates under the auspices of the sun god, Rome embraces a vital part of the Parthian ruling dynasty. The very act serves to stabilize the entire region for half a century, until Trajan officially annexed Armenia as a Roman province in 114 A.D.

In reality, however, the crowning of Tiridates does not signify the end of the war, or even an acceptance that Armenia would retain a sspecial status outside of the official administrative structure of the Roman Empire. To the contrary, it signifies a new phase in a war whose focal point has shifted away from Armenia and is now aiming to expand a New Empire into the territories held by the bastard king of Parthia. Nero’s subsequent behavior, especially his campaign in Greece, must be interpreted from the point of view of his redefined role within the cosmos of his world.

One of the first steps he undertakes is the elimination of the key players who were responsible for the diplomatic and military conditions of the treaty with Tiridates. When in 67 A.D., disturbances break out in Judea that signify the beginning of the Jewish Wars, Nero does not rely on Corbulo, his most trusted and experienced commander in the region. He dispatches the then unknown Vespasian to take command of the Roman forces and summons Corbulo to Greece.

Upon Corbulo’s arrival at Cenchrae, the Port of Corinth (where Nero is breaking ground on the Corinthian canal, one of the most ambitious undertakings to connect the West with the East of his prospective enlarged empire), Nero’s messengers order him to commit suicide. Corbulo instantly obeys. His death and that of several other popular generals would help usher in the massive military revolt that would eventually result in Nero’s own suicide. Corbulo’s family would remain part of anti-Imperial intrigue. His daughter Domitia Longina would eventually mayy the emperor Domitian and is suspected of involvement in his assassination.

For Nero, the marriage of Roman pomp and Parthian circumstance at Puteolis has culminated in a splendid if theatrical affirmation of his chosen role as the new God of the Sun. Tiridates, a Mazdean and probably a high priest of the Zoroastrian cult, initiated him into the sacred rites of Mithraism.

Of course, the Mithraic cult itself means nothing to the Hellenophile Nero. Sueton states that Nero utterly despised all cults, with the sole exception of that of the Syrian goddess, also known as the Syrian Venus or Venus Syriaca, the Roman interpretation of Ishtar (Astarte, called Ashtoreth in the Old Testament, or Ostara among the Nordic people.) She is Chaldean in origin, her name being one of the titles of Beltis, the queen of heaven. Astarte was the wife of Tammuz who, when Tammuz died, followed him into the Underworld or realm of Eresh-Kigal, queen of the death. Astarte persuaded Eresh-Kigal to allow her messenger to sprinkle both Astarte and Tammuz with the Water of Life, with the result that they had power to return to the light of the sun for six months, after which the same cycle must be repeated… obviously a myth interwoven solar cycle of vernal equinox (dawn) and autumn equinox (sunset). It was the worship of Astarte by Israel that constituted such abomination to Jahweh.

But during his reign, Nero acquired such a contempt even for Astarte that he urinated on her image, after he was enamored of another superstition.

This, however, did not properly constitute worship of a deity or membership in an integrated cult, but really was more of a protective fetish, talisman, or amulet. Sueton writes:

‘For he had received as a gift from some unknown man of the commons, as a protection against plots, a little image of a girl. Since a conspiracy came to light immediately after, he continued to venerate it as a powerful divinity and to offer three sacrifices to it a day.’

Despite his rejection of organized cults, Mithraism provides him with the seed of an idea that connects Nero’s past with his future.

Mithra’s equivalent in the Greek pantheon is Apollo, whose attributes are the sun, light, clarity, music, and truth. In Greek theology, Apollo replaced the primeval Titan Helios. However, the Greeks did not eliminate Helios entirely from their mythological canon, but referred to both him and Apollo as sun gods.

During the festivities at Puteolis and, later, at his triumphal entry into Rome at the end of his Greek campaign, Nero consciously evokes his identity as the incarnation of the Greek sun god. He is dressed in a Greek cloak, wearing the Olympic crown on his head and carrying the Pythian crown in hand as he rides in Augustus’ triumphal chariot. (We shall see later on just what level of meaning especially the Pythioan crown carried at this point.) This signifies one thing to his subjects and to his rivals: He is no longer a mortal but the reborn Apollo who, fittingly, finishes his grand entry at the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine, not at the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline. Cassius Dio describes the entrance of the New Helios into the Eternal City:

‘When he entered Rome, a portion of the city wall was torn down and a section of the gates broken in, becausse some asserted that each of these ceremonies was customary upon the return of crowned victors from the Games. First entered men wearing the crowns that he had won, and after them came others, carrying wooden panels aloft on spears, upon which were inscribed the name of the games, the kind of contest, and the statement that Nero Caesar first of all Romans from the beginning of the world had won the event. Next came the Victor himself riding in a triumphal chariot, the one in which Augustus had once celebrated his many victories. Nero was dressed in a garb of purple covered with spangles of gold. He was crowned with a garland of wild olive and held in his hand the Pythian laurel.

‘By his side rode Diodorus, the lyre player. After passing through the Circus and the Forum in company with soldiers, knights, and senators, he ascended the Capitol and from here continued to the Palatine. Rome was decked out in garlands, ablaze with lights and wafting with incense. The entire population, and especially the senators, kept shouting the chorus: “Hail, Olympian victor! Hail, Pythian victor! Augustus, Augustus! Hail to Nero, our Hercules! Hail to Nero, our Apollo. The only victor of the Grand Tour, the only one from the beginning of time. Augustus, Augustus! O, Divine Voice! Blessed are they that hear you!”’

3. Apollo as Family Legacy:

The triumphal entry into Rome capped a development that had been cultivated for most of Nero’s life. Nero had identified with Apollo since childhood, for family and personal reasons. Augustus Caesar, Nero’s grandfather, as a young man chose Apollo as his personal god and attributed his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra to Apollo’s ssuperiority over the Egyptian and Oriental deities, whose cults appeared to his sober Roman instincts as lascivious and orgiastic. I will demonstrate later the importance of Augustus’ victory in regard especially to the choice of Philippi for the anti-Nero resistance.

Apollo was said to have been the most beautiful of the gods. Like Nero, he had dark gold hair, blue eyes, and he carried his seven-stringed lyre as well as a golden bow and a quiver full of golden arrows, made for him by Hephaestus by order of Zeus. He was the god of the sun, a patron of poetry, mathematics, and medicine. Music, history, dreams, dance, all belong to him. Like Nero, he races a chariot, the original symbold of the Titan Helios.

The chariot’s course, represented by the elliptical race track of the Circus Maximus, is symbolic of the movement of the sun.

There are strong indications that by the early 60s, Nero exhibits a conscious effort to build up the image of the New Helios. The lynchpin of this undertaking is his mammoth building project, the Domus Aurea, or Golden Housse, and the collossal statue of himself that he commissioned to be made of gold and silver “donated” by Roman senators, knights and patricians — a statue just like those traditionally reserved to honor a god.

The Golden House was to contain a rotating dining room, designed to symbolize Nero as the new sun god, situated at the center of the universe, which rotates around him. This project was begun long before Nero elevated himself officially into the status of a god during the crowning of Tiridates. The Golden House was supposed to occupy the Palatine, the hill sacred to Apollo, that represented the center of Rome and, hence, the center of power in the Roman empire. But Nero’s horizon shifted as he assumed the status of an official deity. By aligning himself with Tiridates, the older brother and, according to bloodline, rightful rule of the Parthian empire as his vassal, Nero’s world had become lopsided: The existing delineation of the Empire now merely made up the western exxpanses of a larger whole… a whole whose center coincide with the true center of the universe, the Omphalos Stone at the Oracle of Delphi!

Yet curiously, Apollo never represented the physical sun. He was “light” itself, described with a host of flattering epithets. He was Phoebus (the brilliant), Chrysocomes (“of the golden locks”), Xanthus (“the fair”). So is Nero. Through his association with the sun’s rays, Apollo also is an archer who shoots arrows both of insight and of death. This association is especially important with some of the rituals performed during the Mithraic festivities at Puteolis: Tiridates’ triumphal reception includes an archery contest during which the newly crowned Armenian king kills not one but two bulls with a single arrow. Apollo’s projectiles kill instantly, which is why he was also known as the “destroyer”, the dispenser of instant death from afar.

Which makes this god of healing also a bringer of disease and death, a contradiction which may be due to the nature of his mother Leto. She is originally the Asiatic deity Lada, a goddess of the night. It is interesting to note that as Nero leaves Rome for Greece, he leaves a “pestilence” raging behind. Since the rudimentary elements of biological and germ warfare were not unknown to the Romans, we might be permitted to speculate that Nero may have had a hand in the deliberate spreading of the disease.

4. Apollo and Nero’s sense of self

A man like Nero, steeped into the depths of Greek culture and mythology, would have been keenly aware of these parallels. Undoubtedly, Nero must have considered his own history and situation an exact reenactment of the god’s biography. Seneca flattered im early in 54, in his Apolocyntosis, that he resembled Apollo in beauty and musical ability. Greek inscriptions start calling him Neos Helios, the new sun god. By the time of his death in 68, he even has coins struck that show Nero on the obverse and Apollo, in flowing robes, on the reverse.

The consciousness of a certain physical resemblance to the god must have imprinted Nero’s identity from childhood. Like Apollo, he is golden-haired in a world dominated by brown and black hair. Like Apollo, Nero suffered from the the hostility between his mother and the wife of the ruler. Zeus’ wife Hera, in her jealousy of her husband’s extramarital affairs, pursued Apollo’s mother, the nymph Leto, daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe, so that no place on earth could be found for his birth — much like Messalina persecuted his own mother, Agrippina.

According to Suetonius, Messalina sent out assassins to strangle Nero in his sleep when he was a little boy. But a snake in the boy’s bed scared off her henchmen. As it turned out, it was only the shed in of a snake, but Agrippina had the skin enclosed in a golden bracelet, which Nero wore until the memory of his mother grew hateful to him.

Apollo, by comparison, was born on the “floating” island of Delos, where he killed the Python of Delphi and took over its oracle. He, too, is the venquisher of unseen terrors.

Sexually, too, Nero and Apollo appear to share the same proclivities. While Apollo had amorous affairs with women, he also loved boys, such as the young Lacedaemonian price Hyacinthus, and Telephus, the son of Hercules. Nero, too, is deliberately bisexual, marrying not just one but two men apart from his female spouses and using and abusing uncounted others to satisfy his violent sexual urges.

But one of the most severe coincidental parallels between emperor and god may have been Nero’s relationship with Poppaea. At its very core, it resembles at that of Apollo and Daphne (lit., laurel), a beautiful river nymph. Eros, the god of love, struck Apollo with one of his gold-tipped arrows. Apollo immediately became infatuated with love and an irrational desire to possess Daphne. Nero had the same experience when first seeing Poppaea. But at the same time, Eros struck Daphne with his lead-tipped arrow of disgust and repulsion. The more ardent Apollo was in the pursuit of his consuming love, Daphne, the more she was repulsed by him. He chased her relentlessly until Daphne, exhausted and terrified, cried out to Gaia, the Mother Earth. She was transformed into a laurel tree, leaving Apollo despondent over his loss.

5. Marsyas and St. Bartholomew:

A propensity for wanton, deliberate cruelty ran in the Ahenobarbus family: Gnaeus Domitius, the family founder, was characterized as having a “face of iron, heart of lead” by Licinius Crassus. Gnaeus’s son, a close relative to Brutus and Cassius, was implicated in Caesar’s death. Nero’s father was a staff officer of Caligula’s and reportedly killed a freedman for not drinking as ordered. On the Appian Way, he once whipped up team of horses to run over a boy with his chariot. He also gouged out the eye of Roman Knight for being too outspoken against him and had a well-earned reputation for dishonesty: He defrauded bankers and even winners of chariot races. Charged with treason, adultery, and incest with his sister Lepida, he died of the “dropsy” at Pyrgi.

On an emotional level, Nero appears to model himself along the psychogram of the god. Both are characterized by petty jealousies and cruel vengefulness, a fact demonstrated quite clearly in the Apollo-Marsyas myth and the obvious parallels in Nero’s treatment of talented Roman patricians and artists, like the poet Lucan, whom he considered artistic competitors:

Marsyas, described as either a satyr or a russtic, found an aulos, a double-reeded wind instrument that had been discarded by the goddess Athena. He began to play it and after a while became so renowned for his music that his listeners compared him to Apollo. There are conflicting opinions if he actually challenged Apollo himself to a contest, or the other way round. But they chose a judge who was to decide who was the better musician. The loser was to be punished by the winner.

According to the myth, Marsyas began to play his pipes, and Apollo played his lyre. The judge could not decide on a winner. Hence Apollo suggested to compete again, this time with the respective instrument held upside down. Since an aulos does not produce a sound when played this way, Apollo won. He decided to flay Marsyas alive. A 4th-century relief from Mantineia, thought to have originated in the school of Praxtiteles, shows on one side the seated Apollo with his lyre and on the other, Marssyas ecstatically playing his aulos. Between them is the judge, knife in hand.

A version of this scene from Pergamon left out the actual contest, depicting the victorious Apollo on one side, and the unfortunate Marsyas in the center, strung up to a tree by the wrists and, on the other side, the crouching figure of a Scythian slave sharpening a knife. As he was being flayed, the screaming man’s blood ran into the ground and was changed into water, which began to form a river that came to be called Marsyas. This river ran through the region of Phrygia. Apollo cleaned the skin and hung it up high in the temple as a warning to mortal men thinking of challenging the gods.

Marsyas’ fate incidentally is identical with that attributed by Christian tradition to Saint Bartholomew, the same Disciple of Jesus who, when informed by Philip about the arrival of the Savior, responded sarcastically “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?,” eerily echoing the words of Neros biological father, Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, who upon learning of his wife’s pregnancy reportedly said “Nothing good can come of me and Agrippina.”

In the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Bartholomew is listed as one of the twelve disciples, and when his name comes up he is usually paired with Phillip. These gospels however, give us only a name, they do not give us the man as they do with Peter or Matthew or Judas for example. John’s Gospel however, does not refer to anyone called Bartholomew, but instead links Phillip with a man called Nathanael. Of course, Nathanael and Bartholomew are one and the same person.

The English form of “Bartholomew” is really just a transcription of bar-Tolmai, which literally means “son of Tolmai”, which in turn is the phonetic spelling of Ptolemy. The man venerated as St. Bartholomew actually was called Nathanael bar Tolmai – Nathanael, son of Ptolemy.

Christian tradition places bar Tolmai and Thaddeus in Armenia as early as 60 A.D.

Much like St. Sebastian, Thaddeus is killed with arrows in Ardaze, Armenia, at about the time when the secondary conspiracy of Otho gathers steam in 66 AD, forcing Nero to return to Rome. According to canonical tradition, bar Tolmai was skinned alive and beheaded in 68 AD, probably just prior to Nero’s death. The place of his martyrdom and the cause of it vary greatly. One tradition puts the location of his death at Albanopolis (which is identifiedd as the modern Derbend) during the raign of King Astyages.

Greek testimonies of the fifth century, however, place the incident at Urbanopolis, another lost city variously called Albanopolis and Xerbanopolis, an otherwise unknown city in Greater Armenia. Given the date, 68 AD, and circumstances of his death, I believe that he is killed by Titidates, not near Albanopolis, which did not exist at this point in time, but at Artaxata, at the entrance to the plainlands of the River Araxes, at a point where the watercourse forms a near peninsula. His method of execution is chosen deliberately by Nero’s ally Tiridates because bar Tolmai, like Marsyas, in his role as a member of the Conspiracy of the Messengers, challenged the role of Nero-Apollo.

6. The Cultic Meaning of the Greek Campaign:

The Omphalos Stone (omphalos meaning “center” or “navel” of the earth’ to the ancient Greeks) at the center of the inner sanctum of the shrine of the Delphic oracle represented the geographical and theological center of the known universe in antiquity. And as we shall see, Nero was about to make it the geographical center of the Roman Empire as well… pending enormous expansion into Parthian territory.

Again, we have to return to origin myths involving Apollo to understand the full implications: Delphi is more than just a holy place to the world of Antiquity. It literally marks the center of the known Universe. According to the earliest legends, the site of the Oracle at Delphi was originally a sacred place of the earth goddess Gaia (also called Ge) and was guarded by her daughter, the serpent Python. Regarding the Omphalos Stone, one legend tells that the original stone, now lost, was a large meteorite fallen from the sky in deepest antiquity, while another legend says it was the first physical object to emerge on dry land after the waters of the Deluge had settled.

Later legends state that the site was the center of the world as determined by the god Zeus. Two eagles (or ravens) had been released by Zeus from opposite ends of the earth and following great flights across the skies they finally met at Delphi. The site was originally called Pytho, after the guardian serpent. It was renamed Delphi after the dolphin (delphis in Greek) whose form Apollo took in order to bring Cretan sailors to Delphi so that they might become priests in his new temple.

The Omphalos Stone that is currently on display in the Delphi Museum in Greece is a later substitute, but probably the very stone that Nero would have visited: A curious, conical shape covered with sculptural designs that are said to derive from the old pillar and tree worship of prehistoric goddess cults. The original stone was covered with woolen netting, the so-called argenon.

Upon arriving at Delphi, devotees would purify themselves at the Castalian Spring before entering the Sacred Path, a serpentine flagstone walk up the hill. The Sacred Path was lined with statues and votive offerings, most of which have, of course, long disappeared. (A few examples can be seen today in the Delphi Museum.) The Path ended right outside the temple. Here, pilgrims would sacrifice a sheep or goat, whose entrails were examined by the priests for omens. They would then enter one by one to ask the sibyl their question.

The temple of Apollo was built with donations from every Greek city-state and from abroad. (This explains Nero’s claim on the wealth of the Greek nobility without regard for regional or diplomatic considerations.) On the outside of the temple base, there still are over 700 inscriptions, most of them announcing the emancipation of slaves, which was considered a special act of piety to be performed at Delphi — and of course formed the cornerstone of Nero’s policy of surrounding himself with freedmen rather than with Roman nobles.

Above the Temple, there is an outdoor theater with 33 tiers of stone seats holding t 5,000 people. Another stadium nearby, this one seating 7,000, was used for the Phythian Games, which were held every four years to celebrate the victory of the Athenians over the Phoenicians. Apollo spoke through his oracle, who had to be an older woman of blameless life chosen from among the peasants of the area. The sibyl or prophetess took the name Pythia and sat on a tripod seat over an opening in the earth: When Apollo slew Python, its body fell into this fissure, according to legend, and fumes arose from its decomposing body. Intoxicated by the vapors, the sibyl would fall into trance, allowing Apollo to possess her spirit. In this state she prophesied. She spoke in riddles, which were interpreted by the priests of the temple, and people consulted her on everything from important matters of public policy to personal affairs.

The shrine sits on the side of Mount Parnassus, which rises in a long arc from the Gulf of Corinth above a valley whose sides held the groves, caves, and ravines sacred to the gods of ancient Greece. Parnassus itself was sacred to Apollo. The most important of the mountain places of worship was the Delphic shrine, where the most famous oracle of ancient times presided and prophesied.

The legend connected to this location is that Apollo, the infant son of Zeus, descended to to Mount Parnassus four days after his birth to slay the great serpent Python because it had molested his mother during her pregnancy. Fleeing from the peak, Python sought safety in the sanctuary of the Earth Mother at Delphi. Apollo relentlessly pursued Python, however, and killed it with his arrows. Later repenting of his crime, Apollo purified himself (on the island of Crete) and, returning to Delphi, persuaded Pan (the goat-god of wild places and evocative music) to reveal to him the art of prophecy. To appease the serpent’s shadow, after all, the monster was of divine origin, Apollo founded Games in its honor, the Pythian Games, also known as the Great Games of Delphi — the very same Nero took such deliberate and megalomaniac enjoyment in winning.

On the site of his battle, Apollo erected his own oracular temple and, at the exact place where he had ’speared’ the serpent, the Omphalos Stone was set in the ground. Apollo decided to continue the oracle under his own auspices by adopting it himself. One of his personal symbols, the stool (which is not unlike the Roman sella curulis used by Corbulo as a symbol of the Emperor when crowning Tiridates at Artaxata, was consecrated in the sanctuary at Delphi.

The ancient shrine of Apollo is a location of deep personal meaning and of strategic importance for Nero and his expansionist ambitions. It is the place where he not only becomes Apollo, but actually transcends the god. The incidents involving Nero’s stay at Delphi speak clearly as to the role Nero envisioned for himself.

Legend has it that when Nero visited the Oracle at Delphi, he gave 400,000 sesterces to the Pythia for uttering oracles that suited him. This represented half the sum needed to feed and entertain a triumphal army of 3,000 for a day. (This money Galba later recovered.) But the Pythia could not be bribed. She shouted angrily at Nero: “Your presence here outrages the god you seek. Go back, matricide! The number 73 marks the hour of your downfall!” Nero, who was 30 years old at the time, took the number 73 to refer to his age at the time of his death. His contemporaries later thought that the number related to Galba, who was 73 years old when he succeeded Nero in 68.

The infuriated Nero had the Pythia buried alive in the sacred cavern. The bodies of her temple priests were thrown into the chasm after their hands and feet had been chopped off. This barbarous and sacrilegious act implies that Nero did not consider himself a mere reincarnation of Apollo, but indeed a New Helios… a god in his own standing who repeated divine history by killing the god’s priests and making the oracle his own. While Apollo had lost Daphne, the love of his life, to Gaia’s protection, Nero not only had desecrated the sacred fissure from which Gaia communicated with the mortals, he had also overcome the death of his love Poppaea… by creating a new Poppaea out of the castrate Sporus, who accompanied his every step while in Greece.

Nero wanted to obliterate the traces of the Old Apollo, by destroying the monuments to previous victors at the Pythian Games, killing off his living competitors to assure there would be no-one coming after him. He also took away the territory of Cirrha and distributed parcels of it to his soldiers and entourage. Of course, while it is evident that Nero worked deliberately to establish himself as a New Helios, it is improbably that he actually believed that he was a god. His dying words, “qualis artifex” indicate that he was aware not just of his mortality, but of his role as an artist… an artist who had used the world as his canvas to create a go out of himself. Because gods are made by those who believe in them.

7. Delphi and the meaning of Ichthys:

Understanding the mythical implications of Delphi and the lore associated with Apollo and the serpent Python also is key to understanding the cultic background of the anti-Nero opposition, especially the currents that operated outside of Rome itself. Another legend tied to the killing of the Python has the monster being a female serpent named Delphyne, from which the name Delphis supposedly was derived.

In ancient Greek, “fish” and “womb” were denoted by the word delphos. In these traditions, there are clear connections to Ichthys, the offspring of the ancient sea goddess Atargatis, who is known in various mythological cycles of the Mediterranean and Middle East as Tigarta, Aphrodite, Pelagia, or Delphine. Well before Christianity, the fish symbol was known as the “Great Mother”, symbolized by a pointed oval design, the vesica piscis or Vessel of the Fish.

That “fish” is also a central element in other stories, including the Goddess of Ephesus (who has a fish amulet covering her genitals), as well as the tale of the fish that swallowed the penis of Osiris. It was also considered a symbol of the vulva of Isis.

Associated in general with the generative and reproductive spirit in mythology, the fish has been identified in certain cultures with reincarnation and the life force. Among one cultic group in India, the fish was considered to house the departed soul, maybe based on the observation of sharks feeding on the dead bodies that were washing down the Ganges River into the Indian Ocean. As part of a fertility ritual (repeated in Christian tradition by the feeding of the Multitudes with fish and bread), a specific kind of fish was eaten in the belief that it would be reincarnated in a newborn child.

Among the early Christians, active in scattered communities throughout Greece and the Middle East, the Ichthys was used as a sort of “secret handshake”: One person would draw a single curve with a staff (half of the Ichthys) in the dust, the other would confirm his identity as a member of a Christian cult by completing the symbol. In this particular instance, the word Ichthys is interpreted as an acronym for the Greek Letters Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon, Sigma… which formed the profession of the Christian faith with the formula “Iesous Christos Theou Huios Soter” — Jesus Chris, Son of God, Savior.”

It is this symbol, that especially among the Christian communities of Corinth (located within 50 miles of Delphi) and Philippi in eastern Macedonia, founded by Philip II in 356 BC and the location of the final battle between Mark Anthony and Octavian. It also appears to be the sign of recognition employed by the Messengers used by the main players of the anti-Nero conspiracy around St. Paul.

7. Nero and Corinth:

While Delphi provided the cultic and populist focus of Nero’s Greek Campaign, Corinth features into his plans both economically and strategically.

The Isthmus of Corinth is a narrow stretch of land which played a crucial role in the history of Greece. As the only land bridge that connects the Greek mainland with the Peloponnesus and can as thus be considered the nexus of the northern and southern land masses of Greece.

Ancient Corinth, the original settlement, dates back to the 10th Century BC and was the richest port and the largest city in ancient Greece.

Strategically located at the isthmus, it was a focal point in the transportation of populations and commodities, and of course, for the movement of armed forces. Located near two seaports — Lechaeum, the western harbor in the Corinthian Gulf, which served as the trading port to Italy and Sicily, and Cenchreae in the Saronic Gulf in the east — only 4 miles apart, Corinth had been a powerful commercial center, its influence extending at times beyond the Saronic Gulf far to the Aegean Sea, and beyond the Gulf of Corinth to the Adriatic and Italy.

In the first century AD, Corinth was a cosmopolitan hub, a melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures. Its forum, was surrounded by temples as well as shrines to the Roman emperor and members of the Julian and Claudian family, which were erected alongside temples to the older Greek gods such as Apollo as well as Apollo’s son, Asklepios, the god of healing. During the first century, Philippi was the capital of the Roman province of Achaia,  administered by Roman governors such as Marcus Annaeus Novatus, the older brother of the philosopher Seneca, Nero’s tutor and couselor.

Novatus was born in Cordova, Spain and changed his name to Junius Annaeus Gallio after he was adopted by Lucius Junius Gallio, a wealthy Roman citizen. Gallio became a teacher and political functionary for the Emperor Nero, and is best known as the Roman proconsul of Achaia when the apostle Paul was involved in a dispute at Corinth.

Both Gallio and Seneca were accused of being involved in the Pisonian Conspiracy of 65 AD, and forced to kill themselves, three years before Nero himself committed suicide.

Saint Paul chose Corinth as headquarters for his mission to the west. According to canonical tradition, he stayed in the city for 18 months, working as a tentmaker and living with fellow tentmakers, Aquila, a native of Pontus, and his wife Pricilla (Prisca), two of the Jews expelled from Rome by Emperor Claudius.

Paul’s stay in Corinth in the early 50’s is documented in Acts of the Apostles 18:1-18, his ongoing connections through his Letters to the Corinthians. According to Acts, it was in Cointh that Paul decides to focus on the conversion Gentiles non-Jews, apparently with significant success. It is in Corinth that he receives his fellow Apostles Silas and Timothy when they arrived from Macedonia. Due to the success of his mission among both Gentiles and Jews, the local community brought him before the tribunal headed by Gallio on the charge of “persuading men to worship God contrary to the law.”

Gallio rejected the case, arguing that no actual crime had been committed, as “only words and names and your own law” was involved. Paul stayed many days longer before heading to Syria with Priscilla and Aquila. Acts note that at Cenchreae, “he cut his hair, for he had a vow”. After landing at Caesarea, he went on to Antioch, Galatia and Phrygia, “strengthening all the disciples.”

In Ephesus, Paul encounters a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria…

Der KONVERTIT übernimmt in Beziehung auf seine bisherigen neue und andere Glaubens- oder Überzeugungsgrundsätze und die damit verbundenen Traditionen und Bräuche (1). Außerordentlich bedeutsam für unsere westliche Zivilisation ist ein Konvertit namens PAULUS.

Geboren als Scha’ul (Saul, lat.: Saulus) verfolgte dieser überaus gesetzestreue und gläubige Pharisäer mit Leidenschaft die jüdischen Häretiker “Christen”, Wiki (2):

“Nach Apg 7,58ff EU war er bei der Steinigung des ersten christlichen Märtyrers Stephanus anwesend und hatte ‘Wohlgefallen’ daran. Danach habe er die Gemeinde ‘verwüstet’, ‘indem er in die Häuser eindrang, Männer und Frauen verschleppte und für ihre Verhaftung sorgte’. Nach Apg 9,1f EU erbat und erhielt er vom Jerusalemer Hohenpriester einen schriftlichen Auftrag, auch in Damaskus und den dort befindlichen Synagogen nach Anhängern Jesu zu suchen, um sie zu verhaften.”

Doch siehe da, auf dem Weg nach Damaskus in eliminatorischer Mission erschien ihm der Herr (Apg 9,3-29 EU). Dieser rief ihn mit seinem hebräischen Namen an: “Scha’ul, Scha’ul! Warum verfolgst du mich?”

Wiki: “Er habe zurückgefragt: Wer bist du, Herr? Darauf habe die Stimme geantwortet: Ich bin Jesus, den du verfolgst! Damit erkannte Paulus das … Unrecht seines ganzen bisherigen Lebens, das er dem ‘Eifer für das Gesetz’ … gewidmet hatte. Denn nun habe Gott ihm in der Person Jesus Christus seinen wahren Willen direkt und unvermittelt offenbart.”

Seit dem sogenannten “Damaskuserlebnis” verstand sich Paulus – der seinen Namen nicht wegen seiner Bekehrung wechselte, wie es die bekannte Redewendung irrtümlich nahelegt, sondern beide Namen (Saulus/Paulus) seit seiner Geburt trug (3) – als von Gott berufener „Apostel des Evangeliums für die Völker“ (Gal 1,15f EU). Indes: die Bedeutung von “Paulus” ist “klein”, was erklärt, warum er als Jesu Diener später diesem Namen den Vorzug gab.

Wiki: “Im Neuen Testament werden Paulus dreizehn Briefe zugeschrieben. Für mindestens sieben davon – Röm, 1 Kor, 2 Kor, Gal, Phil, 1 Thess, Phlm – erkennt (sogar, T.) die heutige historisch-kritische Forschung seine Autorschaft an.” (4)

Paulus wurde der erste und wichtigste Theologe des Christentums und ein besonders erfolgreicher Missionar, denn er erwies sich als fähig, Gottes Wort so zu predigen, dass es nicht nur die Juden sondern alle verstehen konnten.

Diese abrupte und vollständige Wende des großen Christenmörders zum größten Förderer des Glaubens überhaupt macht die Einmaligkeit des Paulus aus.

Zwar hören wir ständig von “überraschenden Trennungen”, “unerwarteten Todesfällen”, da merkt ein gestandener Familienvater dreier Kinder an seinem 50. Geburtstag, dass er schwul ist, und scheidet sich von seiner Frau, da läßt sich eine begnadete Klarinettistin in einen Mann umoperieren, heiratet eine Frau, und ist endlich glücklich. Aber es scheint nur uns Zaungästen “plötzlich” und “überraschend” zu sein. Die Familie wußte es seit vielen Jahren, und alle sahen die Zeichen, sie sahen es seit langem kommen. “Amok an Schule XY – Schüler rastet plötzlich aus”? Nein, diese Massenmorde sind stets von langer Hand vorbereitet.

Scheinbar überraschende Konversionen sind tatsächlich meist ein PROZESS, und Iannacone (5) stellte fest, dass sich der “GLAUBE” erheblich langsamer entwickelt als das Eingebundensein in die GRUPPE. Grade dies ist eine entscheidende Erkenntnis. Denn in der Regel wird die Konversation deshalb vollzogen, weil man endlich Gesprächspartner, Freunde und Zuwendung hat, eine Frau versprochen kriegt, Werbeeinnahmen, einen Job usw.

Erleuchtungen wie die des mörderischen Saul hingegen sind ein Vorrecht des Herrn und ein sehr seltenes und besonderes Ereignis.

Scha’ul konvertierte nicht nur von einem Verfolger Jesu zu einem Verkünder Jesu, er legte auch sein vorheriges gewalttätiges Verhalten völlig ab und wurde vom Wolf zum Lamm. Das ist außerordentlich ungewöhnlich, denn üblicherweise bedeutet Konversion, dass Hetzer und Henker der einen Ideologie zu Hetzern und Henkern einer anderen werden. Der Bolschewist Mussolini konvertierte zum Faschisten Mussolini as same as Klumpfuß-Joe-the-German did, sie konvertierten von einem zum anderen Extrem.

Hier nun muß einer der berüchtigsten Konvertiten Deutschlands erwähnt werden. Ich meine Peter Schütt (6). Dieser intelligente Junge aus lutherischem Haus KONVERTIERTE als 19-Jähriger (!) zum Katholizismus, war in den 60ern ein Gründungsmitglied der “D”KP, brüstete sich jahrelang mit seiner afrikanischen Gattin, entdeckte kurz vor dem winselnden Ende des Bolschewismus seine Liebe zu Michail Gorbatschow, schmiß die Bimbofrau weg, heiratete eine Iranerin und wurde dann, Sie ahnen es… Mohammedanist. Der anscheinend weite Weg ist so weit nicht: Es ist der Sprung des analen Zwangcharakters von einem A*schloch ins nächste. Vergleichen wir diese Entwicklung zB. mit der von Otto Schily (7): Herr Schily war zunächst Handlanger von anarchistischen Terroristen, fand seinen Weg in die verfassungskonforme Partei “die Grünen”, wechselte zur SPD und wurde dann als Innenminister ein republikanisches Highlight, ein außerordentlicher Ruhepol der schröderschen Desperado-Regierung. Man sollte also mE. genau darauf schauen, wie es ablief. Lief es, wie im Fall Peter Schütt, von einem Totalitarismus zum nächsten, oder haben wir einen langsamen, qualitativen Erkenntnis- und Entwicklungsprozess vor uns, wie zB. im Falle Otto Schilys?

Von der Islamophobie zur Konversion ist es manchmal nur ein kleiner Schritt. Ein ehemaliges Mitglied der Republikaner und Gründungsmitglied des Bezirkverbandes Ruhrgebiet von Pro NRW hat ihn getan und ist Muslim geworden.

Schon die “Lektüre der ersten Biographien Mohammeds” habe ihn eingenommen, so Roger Schwedes, der im Interview mit dem “Muslim-Markt” bekennt: Jeder Tag, jede Stunde des Lesens, jedes Gespräch mit einem wahrhaft Gläubigen hat mich mehr und mehr eingenommen und glücklich gemacht.

Und auch in dieser Biographie spielt der Antikapitalismus eine wesentliche Rolle, die schon viele Sinnsucher zum Islam geführt hat, bietet dieser doch eine GEISTIGE ZUFLUCHT vor dem “STILLSTAND im FLACHEN, DEMOKRATISCH VERORDNETEN KONSUMALLTAG.” (9)

Das aber kann doch den erfahrenen Counterjihadi nicht erstaunen!

Was halten Sie denn nun von diesem Postulat:

“Die VERABSOLUTIERUNG von FREIHEIT ist ein junges Gewächs (Fragen Sie bitte nicht mich, wo der Autor dieses seltsame Gewächs aufgespürt hat, T.). Sie ist nicht nur dem Islam unbekannt, sondern auch allen anderen Kulturen und Zivilisationen der Weltgeschichte. Vielleicht haben DIE alle etwas RICHTIG gemacht. Die ISLAMISCHE KRITIK an der WESTLICHEN ZIVILISATION, an ihrem Materialismus und ihrer Dekadenz ist SCHLICHT ZUTREFFEND.” (10)

Der Schöpfer dieser These befindet sich in dem Wahn, “antitotalitäre, ideologiekritische, islamkritische politische Essays” zu verfassen und sucht laut eigenem Bekunden auf einem Weg von links außen ausgehend nach dem “wahren Konservatismus”, den er irgendwo rechts jenseits der CDU – und offenbar ggf. auch in den Lagern der Taliban – vermutet (11). Dieser und andere Ex-Hodenhalter Honeckers belehren alte CDU-Anhänger über den wahren “Konservatismus”… o tempora o mores…

Denken Sie sich – natürlich rein fiktiv – als General kurz vor dem Hornsignal: Einer Ihrer Obersten äußert tiefstes Verständnis für den FEIND, läßt die Trommeln für JENE rühren und SIE und den Souverän und die verwitterten Kämpen um Sie herum verspotten. Was würden Sie tun müssen? a) Ihn bitten, Sie nicht im Schlaf zu stören, b) seinen Sold erhöhen, c) ihn erschießen lassen?

Paulus adalah seorang yang anti Kristus dan anti kekristenan. Lukas mencatat: Berkobar-kobar hati Saulus untuk mengancam dan membunuh murid-murid Tuhan (Kis 9:1). Tetapi, Tuhan adalah Tuhan yang bisa mengadakan mujizat pertumbuhan rohani. Tipe Saulus memang tidak mungkin diubahkan melalui pendekatan penginjilan dan pembinaan rohani biasa. Tuhan memakai penetrasi supranatural untuk mempertobatkan dirinya. Lukas mencatat peristiwa supranatural yang mempertobatkan Saulus itu: Dalam perjalanannya ke Damsyik, ketika ia sudah dekat kota itu, tiba-tiba cahaya memancar dari langit mengeliling dia (Saulus). Merubah orang beragama lain yang sangat fanatik menjadi hamba Kristus yang militan itu serasa mustahil. Mengubah orang Kristen tradisional yang agamawi menjadi menyala-nyala dalam urapan Roh Kudus pun sering sangat sulit. Namun, kalau Roh Kudus sudah menjamah secara langsung, mujizat perubahan akan terjadi. Bahkan yang terdahulu bisa menjadi yang kemudian. Pertumbuhan rohani karena penetrasi supranatural akan terjadi secara ajaib.

Anda bisa berdoa supaya orang-orang lain mengalami mujizat pertobatan dan pertumbuhan rohani. Meskipun tidak dicatat eksplisit, pastilah orang-orang Kristen yang teraniaya saat itu bersyafaat supaya Saulus dan kawan-kawannya bertobat. Dan, Tuhan pun menjawab dengan memberikan mujizat pertumbuhan rohani dalam diri Saulus itu.

Pelayanan Para Rasul

Asal-usul, Agama dan Pendidikan

Dalam surat-surat Paulus dan juga Kitab Kisah Para Rasul, ditemukan banyak catatan penting sehubungan dengan latar belakang kehidupan Paulus. Paulus adalah orang Yahudi yang lahir di Tarsus. Berdasarkan kesaksiannya dalam Surat Roma 11:1, Paulus mengungkapkan keberadaannya dalam konteks masyarakat Yahudi. Disunat pada hari ke delapan, dari bangsa Israel, suku Benyamin. Orang Ibrani asli, Tentang Hukum, ia orang Farisi. Sedangkan menurut Roma 11:1 ia menyatakan bahwa ia adalah keturunan Abraham, dalam kegiatan keagamaan, ia aktif dan menumpas gerakan kekristenan yang dianggap sesat. Sedangkan dalam Kisah 23:6, Paulus menyatakan dalam apologetikanya, ia adalah keturunan orang Farisi dan dari golongan Farisi. Alkitab juga dengan terang menyaksikan latar belakang pendidikan Paulus. Ia dididik dengan teliti di bawah pimpinan Gamaliel. Ungkapan yang menunjukkan keberadaan Paulus yang dapat dibanggakan secara lahiriah. Demikian juga kesaksian Paulus melalui surat-suratnya dalam Perjanjian Baru, bukan hanya menunjukkan pemahaman theologinya yang kuat, tetapi pemahamannya tentang filsafat, di lingkungan pelayanannya juga ia kuasai. Begitu juga kemampuannya dalam bidang retorika dan apologetika begitu kuat, bahkan Alkitab pun menyaksikan bahwa Paulus juga adalah seorang orator. Ia sangat fasih berbicara, sehingga dalam Kisah Para Rasul 14:12, Paulus disebut Hermes karena ia yang berbicara, atau chief speaker. Dalam mitos Yunani, Hermes adalah dewa yang berurusan dengan kefasihan bicara, akal … dan yang bertindak sebagai pembawa berita. Kisah Rasul 21:40, 22:2, 21:37 dan Kisah 9:29 menulis bahwa Paulus sangat menguasai bahasa Ibrani dan Yunani. Kemampuan itu nampak dalam Kisah 22:26.

Kegiatan Paulus sebelum Bertobat

Alkitab secara gamblang memaparkan, apa yang menjadi kegiatan Paulus sebelum ia bertobat. Dalam Kisah Rasul 7:54-58, Paulus adalah seorang muda yang memiliki karier yang cemerlang dari segi keberadaannya sebagai orang Yahudi. Catatan tentang orang-orang meletakkan jubah Stefanus di kaki Paulus dalam ayat 58 serta persetujuan Paulus yang adalah Saulus dalam Kis. 8:1, supaya Stefanus dibunuh menunjukkan kedudukannya yang penting dalam lingkungan masyarakat Yahudi, sebelum ia bertobat. Seperti yang disaksikannya dalam Kisah Para Rasul pasal 22:4-5, 26:8-12, 26:11, Galatia 1:13, 1 Kor. 15:9. Ia adalah penganiaya, menangkap, menyiksa, memaksa menyangkal percakapan dengan Tuhan dalam Kisah Rasul 9:13. Ananias mengungkapkan betapa banyaknya kejahatan yang dibuat Paulus atas pengikut Tuhan di Yerusalem. Untuk tugas itu, Paulus menerima kuasa penuh dari para imam-imam kepala. Untuk mengejar umat Tuhan ke Damsyik, Kis. 9:1-2,14.

Kewarganegaraan Paulus

Dalam apologetikanya, bahkan pada waktu diperhadapkan dengan bantuan hukum, Paulus sangat memahami hak dan kedudukannya sebagai warga negara yang sah. Menurut kesaksian Paulus, ia adalah warga negara Romawi, (Kisah 17:35-39, 22:25, 23:27), kewarganegaraan yang dibeli Paulus dengan harga yang sangat mahal (Kisah 22:28). Kewarganegaraan bukan hanya karena dibeli, tetapi juga haknya karena kelahirannya di Tarsus, (Kisah 22:28). “Tidak pernah terjadi”, demikian ahli sejarah Will Durant, “suatu kewarganegaraan dijaga begitu ketat dan diberi nilai begitu tinggi”. Orang yang memiliki kewarganegaraan Romawi memiliki hubungan dengan pejabat tinggi, walau ia sendiri bukan orang penting. Dengan toleransi yang diberikan undang-undang Romawi, seseorang dapat memegang dua kewarganegaraan sekaligus. Itulah yang membuat Rasul Paulus dapat menikmati hak-hak sebagai warga negara Roma maupun Tarsus… Seorang warga negara Romawi tidak dapat ditekan atau dihukum tanpa diadili terlebih dahulu. Ia tidak boleh diancam… Kalau ia tidak mendapat keadilan dari pemerintah daerah setempat, ia dapat naik banding ke Roma. Keabsahannya sebagai warga negara, diakui. Prajurit yang menyesah Paulus mundur, kepala pasukan menjadi takut, dan Paulus mendapatkan perlindungan hukum (Kisah 22:29). Hak lain yang menunjukkan kebaradaannya sebagai warga negara Romawi, ialah hak Paulus untuk naik banding kepada kaisar di Roma. Hanya warga negara Romawi yang dapat mengajukan hal ini, (Kisah 9:1-19a, 26:12-27)

Pertobatan dan Panggilan Pelayanan

Pertobatan Paulus adalah salah satu pokok penting yang selalu dikemukakannya pada waktu ia berapologetika dengan orang Yahudi. Pertobatan itulah yang menjadikannya ada sebagaimana ia ada. Paulus selalu menekankan bahwa pertobatannya karena perjumpaannya dengan Yesus Kristus yang ditolak Orang Yahudi. Perjumpaan yang Ilahi. Untuk menjelaskan itu, ia menekankan tentang keberadaan Yesus yang Ilahi yang tentu dinubuatkan oleh para nabi, sehingga ia mempertanyakan kepada Agripa: “… percayakah engkau – kepada para nabi? …” Dan pertobatan itu adalah, titik awal baru bagi Paulus, ia dipanggil untuk memberitakan nama Yesus, kepada bangsa-bangsa lain, raja-raja dan bangsa Israel, Kisah 9:14, Kisah 22:21. Dan pemberitaan nama Yesus menjadi inti berita dalam Kisah Para Rasul, baik dalam pelayanan Petrus serta murid yang lain pasal 1-8, maupun pelayanan Paulus, Kisah 9-26. Dan perintah itu adalah Ilahi yang tidak mungkin ditolak.

Hari Kamis malam yang lalu (4/9) Aku jadi pemandu pendalaman Kitab Suci (KS) di Lingkunganku, Lingkungan St. Yohanes – Paroki Kebumen St. Yohanes Maria Vianney Kebumen. Seperti yang sudah kami (para menandu) siapkan, aku memakai metode metaplan dalam memetakan alur kisah pertobatan Saulus yang berujung pada ‘lahirnya’ Paulus. Tentang metode ini aku akan tulis di posting-an berikutnya.

Dalam sesi mencari pesan dari perikop yang didalami, seorang bapak, sebut saja Pak Barto melontarkan pertanyaan.

“Pak Arie, Tuhan Yesus kok milih Saulus jadi salah satu murid yang diberi peran besar, padahal dia kan justru yang mengejar-ngejar, menangkap para pengikutNya? Ini kan aneh?”

Hehe. Kalau mau dilanjutin sih pasti muncul kalimat begini, “Nggak rela! Nggak rela!”

Aku diam. Nggak langsung menjawab. Cuma sedikit mesem. Mesem karena pertanyaan Pak Barto itu mengingatkanku pada obrolanku dengan Romo Slamet (pastor parokiku) siang sebelumnya di tokoku.

“Gusti Yesus ki ternyata manajer SDM sing top lho, Mo?

“Kok bisa?”

Lalu aku mulai nyrocos. Ini dalam konteks rekrutmen dan deployment para murid. 12 rasul awal yang direkrut itu (Yudas Iskariot termasuk anomali-skenarionya begitu sih) punya karakter low-profile-sederhana, manutan, gak pinter-pinter amat, jujur, mau setia. SDM seperti itu nggak cukup. Maka dalam rangka ‘marketing the church’ yang memerlukan the right man on the right place, direkrutlah Stefanus yang lebih thas-thes, berani dan lebih diperhitungkan kaum farisi ahli taurat. Eh, debutan ini keburu dihabisi geng-nya Saulus (Kis.7:54-8:1a).

Nah, sampai di sini naluri manejerial-Nya bekerja. Saulus itu kan puinter-ter, orang sekolahan-ahli taurat, berani, berkemauan keras, bukan yahudi lokalan (Tarsus). High profile banget, deh! Butuh orang kayak gini untuk di-deploy, membuat keseimbangan antar lini para murid Yesus (wah, malah kayak komentator bola). Tapi masalahnya dia ada di pihak musuh. Piye iki?

Maka terjadilah peristiwa penampakan (approachment) yang membutakan Saulus 3 hari lamanya itu (Kis.9:3-9). Peristiwa ini bagaikan ‘transfer window’ klub-klub bola Eropa. Dalam waktu mepet menggaet pemain unggulan milik lawan. Selanjutnya, setelah penumpangan tangan oleh Ananias kepada Saulus aka Paulus, komposisi murid-murid Yesus lebih menjanjikan. Keseimbangan antar lini terjaga. Dan faktor Paulus adalah kartu truf bagi ‘marketing the church’ di luar ranah Yahudi. Begitu.

Romo Parokiku cuma mesam-mesem mendengar cerocosanku yang sangat awami ini. Maklum aku kan Cuma lulusan Bulaksumur, bukan lulusan Urbanum.

Kembali ke laptop! Eh, pertanyaan Pak Barto.

Tentu saja aku nggak bisa menjawab dengan cerocosanku itu. Aku hanya bisa bilang, ya Yesus memang maunya begitu. Coba lihat apa kata Yesus kepada Ananias yang male-malesan waktu disuruh menemui Saulus yang buta: ….orang ini adalah alat pilihan bagiKu untuk memberitakan namaKu kepada bangsa-bangsa lain serta raja-raja dan orang-orang Israel (Kis.9:15). Pasti Yesus telah mempertimbangkan sebelum memilih dia. Begitu jawabanku.

Hehe. Nggak meyakinkan ya? OK deh. Kalau gitu, ada yang bisa bantu mencari jawaban yang meyakinkan?

Berkah Dalem
