I decided I would choose a track that not only makes me laugh at myself but is also a really good song. “I Want You“ is definitely from the my guilty pleasures collection. Savage Garden were the kings of epic radio singles back in the 90’s on their self titled album, “Savage Garden.” Whatever happened to them???

Overcome by despairing apathy, Lee desperately seeks answers to how her Favourite Band Has Been Ruin

Overcome by despairing apathy, Lee desperately seeks answers to how her Favourite Band Has Been Ruined Forever.

When I first discovered Muse three years ago, I felt foolish. I had been wondering the music universe without a compass for years. A steady childhood diet of Queen and T Rex, followed by a somewhat unnutritional yet still ultimately satisfying coming of age period dining on only the worst derivative eurotrash pop and boyband flavours, I felt like I had come home when I found Muse and I felt like a fool for not discovering them earlier. It took a devastating breakup and a sulking, sweeping change from Pink, Delta Goodrem and Matchbox 20 to the national Alternative youth station, Triple J, for me to finally find my mystical musical match. I heard Knights of Cydonia on breakfast radio and I was transfixed. After some quick Youtubing (back in the days before the Great Warner Ripdown), and a quick exclamatory post on my livejournal, I immediately bought the entire back catalogue. Ridiculous guitar theatrics? Check. Glittering symphonic ensembles? Check. Pianoriffic pandemonium? Double check. It was the glorious marriage of britpop with glamrock and I embraced it. I was a little late to the Muse game but it didn’t matter. I’ve always been a musical dag, my playlist still contains a little too much Britney, but I felt like I was finally acquiring some cred.

Matthew Bellamy and friends could do no wrong. I saw them live and it felt like a pilgrimage to holy Mecca. It was on the 11th of November 2007 at the Supreme Court Gardens and I had mostly found my own kind: it looked a little like the leftovers from a comic convention, and all the Muse nerds were very orderly. It was just nice. It was epic, but it was nice.

One day I was hit up by some dude on MySpace. He seemed to like Muse as well, and lived down the road. That was nice. Boy Muser and I bonded over our love for Bellamy and his Bros. He had a bit more Muse cred than me and actually wore a faded Absolution t-shirt on our first meeting, and had seen them live quite a few more times than me. Over a year later and we have been going out for over 6 months. It’s nice.

But something has gone wrong. Terribly wrong. Muse’s new album came out. Boy Muser didn’t like it so much. I tried to like it. I did. I tried, but something has soured my relationship with the Teignmouth rockers, and I know what it is.

Stephanie Meyer.

” I am in your debt, rock gods of Muse, for yet another inspiring album. Thank you for continuing to create my favorite writing music. “

Oh dear.

I was aware of the first Twilight book as it was seeming to cause a bit of a stir amongst some of my reader friends. I expressed a desire to read it: the cover looked pretty and I was down for a little supernatural chicklit- it was slightly out of my comfort zone but I’m a pretty open minded reader, especially if something came packaged with pre-approval and sequels. I quite enjoyed the book, but it was not the poignant, moving read I expected it to be. I ploughed through it, it was a page turner- but much in the same way the Babysitter’s Club books are. I didn’t mind a bit of bubblegum and the characters were a little insipid, but it was also a teen novel (despite seemingly being marketed otherwise) and I accepted it as such. I was as yet unaware of her swooning dedications, and published playlists, that are now associated with the sequels.

I didn’t think anything of it until things got a little out of hand. A little ‘Robert Pattinson’ out of hand. I’m sure you all know the rest.

“Meyer also weaves contrast, irony, symbolism and literary references into the Forks saga. She does it with subtlety and skill. The arc of the series as represented in the celestial bodies of the titles is no less than breathtaking.” – unnamed blogger

I knew something was up when there were some strange comments being posted in the Muse last.fm profile page. Some nonsense about the Twilight soundtrack, Stephanie Meyer’s fangirling, abusive threats to some people called ‘Twihards’ and othersuch business. What was going on? On the Muse forums, threats were being made to ‘new’ fans of Muse. Surely new fans for a band is a good thing? Well I would have thought so.

Suddenly, it seemed like Muse were everywhere. I felt a little possessive, and a little bewildered- suddenly all these new Musers were coming out of the closet. It went from knowing 2 livejournal friends who were into them to 15. Facebook was abuzz with gleeful, praiseful reviews of their latest offering, The Resistance. I couldn’t handle the ‘takeover’ of my exclusive, special band that most mainstream FM listeners had never heard of, this was total overdose! I felt lost, frustrated, scared. So short a time I had with Muse, and I felt like it had been snatched from me.

But surely, the music is all that matters. But as I was to find out, perhaps it is not so.

I am yet to listen to the album objectively. Boy Muser was condemning, which broke my heart. I like two songs on the whole album people, two. I want to love them all! I want to listen to it on repeat in the dark, and be swept up in the unicorn-glittery madness all over again like I was for Black Holes and Revelations. I want to hear epic, edgy guitar riffs like on Origins of Symmetry. I want a clichéd, piano-driven anthem of fluffy chaos that nerd boys can conduct YouTube WoW videos to, like on Absolution. But all I got was some clarinet and some slap bass. There was supposed to be a ’symphonic monster’, and I rubbed my hands in anticipatory glee as Twitter and the Muselive forums bubbled with Muse-y speculation, but all I got was a bit of a ’symphonic meh’. The album was a bit of fun, but it has mostly stayed in it’s cardboard (cardboard!) case since I got it. I haven’t even watched the making of DVD. A year ago, this would have been blasphemy! There was only one thing to do: I put myself on Muse Detox.

And I will prove that I am not prejudiced against terrible vampire fiction infiltrating the mystique of my fangirlish desires. In fact, my favourite band when I was 13 was Savage Garden- and they named themselves after something out of an Anne Rice novel, or something (I think).

It’s rumoured that Matt Bellamy acquired his wardrobe at a certain garage sale in London of a washed out Australian 90’s popstar- and no ladies and gentlemen, it wasn’t Peter Andre.

Fun fact: did you know Daniel is now married to Kathleen of ‘original’ High 5 fame, Australian readers? Darren is still making awesome pop music, but Australia has forgotten Savage Garden and swept their legacy (a record 10 ARIAs at one awards show) under the carpet. Shame, Australia, Shame.

In the 90s, we knew all about vampires. Anne Rice filled goths schoolbags, and I’m pretty sure there is actual sex and bloodsucking in those books, but don’t quote me on that, I haven’t read the things (maybe I should). Oh, and there was that whole Buffy thing.

Boy Muser and I came up with a theory- there is the supernatural pop culture cycle. Vampires (Interview with a Vampire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), witches (The Craft, Practical Magic, Charmed, Sabrina), zombies (Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, zombie marches on YouTube). Vampires… and next witches will be back in. So this will all blow over and the Twimums will dust off their pentacles, crystals and book of shadows which have been sitting in the bottom drawer since 2002.

MUSE-ically, the Twifans stole everything from me. Just like they will fill the D at the Big Day Out- my whole day ruined as I will be wholly concentrating on not feeling unreasonably bitter. There is no doubt that the soundtracks have a little indie cred- New Moon especially. I would put it on if I wanted to go to sleep. But Muse should be ashamed of themselves for the ‘remix’ offering of ‘I Belong To You’. It looks like they spent half an hour chucking some naff guitar over the top of it- and this is my favourite song from their new album.

Friends, before you commiserate me and my woes, stop. I know very well that I should bloody well get over it. Boy Muser is right, genius can’t get it right every time. And in years to come, when the movies are finally all made and this all blows over, maybe I will be able to quietly listen to Muse again, like the days of yore.

But watch out. Your favourite musical artist could be next.

In questa notte d’autunno
sono pieno delle tue parole
parole eterne come il tempo
come la materia
parole pesanti come la mano
scintillanti come le stelle.
dalla tua testa dalla tua carne
dal tuo cuore
mi sono giunte le tue parole
le tue parole cariche di te
le tue parole, madre
le tue parole,amore
le tue parole,amica.
Erano tristi, amare
erano allegre, piene di speranza
erano coraggiose, eroiche
le tue parole
erano uomini.

Today’s Song Spotlight is “Crash and Burn” by Savage Garden. It’s from their 1999 album, Affirmation. I’m not sure how much I really can say about the song itself, because the lyrics are rather self-explanatory. But I’ve always liked the message in this song, and Darren Hayes gives such an impassioned vocal performance. I guess the main thing I can say is that I’m a little disappointed in how this song performed on the pop charts. It wasn’t a failure by any stretch of the imagination, but I wish it had gone higher than it did. It only managed to peak at #12 on the Radio & Records CHR/Pop airplay chart. Personally, I think it deserved to be a top ten, if not a top five song. But, alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

I REALLY like the video for this song. I think the premise is quite interesting. It’s a deaf girl watching scenes through a glass window. Since she can’t hear, she doesn’t understand the context of what she’s seeing, and is innocently trying to copy what she sees. I also like Darren Hayes using the sign language at the end to communicate with her.

CRASH AND BURN
Written by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones
(c) 1999 Rough Cut Music

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart
I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you
It’s hard to find relief and people can be so cold
When darkness is upon your door and you feel like you can’t take anymore

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

When you feel all alone
And a loyal friend is hard to find
You’re caught in a one way street
With the monsters in your head
When hopes and dreams are far away and
You feel like you can’t face the day

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

Because there has always been heartache and pain
And when it’s over you’ll breathe again
You’ll breathe again

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please
To tame your wild wild heart

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I’ll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart

As a child I heard
that you should always
listen to your heart.
I’ve gotten to know mine
quite intimately
we are best friends
partners in crime
and know each other’s secrets

four light years
and six heartaches later
the language
my heart speaks
is easier to understand
than English.

Tuesday
twenty-four hours
before I fell in love
I took a long walk
the whole length of Aurora Boulevard
singing Savage Garden love songs
at the top of my lungs
like a city vermin
bracing myself
for what’s to come

Wednesday
the moment I fell in love
I sat quietly
on cue
and held myself
as I watched it unfold
and witnessed
every painful detail

when it was done
I picked up my things
and righted myself

everything was the same
in the clean, well-lighted room

only my heart was different

I go around my usual business
taking in stride the violent tempest
under the calm surface

nobody knows
but my heart and me

So here I am late at night, well it’s 10:30 -late for me. This is the first time I’ve let the blog get this close to the wire without having something prepared for 7am post time. A lot of things have been on my mind today, but I’ve also had a very busy day. At writing group tonight I was asked why I blog. “Why do you put yourself through it?” Someone asked. I didn’t have a good answer to give in the moment. We went on to talk about privacy and the importance of it. I have been known to spew my stuff to whoever’s closest. I have also tried to be more private and be discerning of who is trustworthy. I try to abstain from complaining as much as possible. But for whatever reason I have chosen to come here and let my stuff hang out. When I read non-fiction I connect with the authors. I have written emails to those writers who have inspired me and introduced me to a new perspective. Maybe that’s what I’m trying to do here. I think I will continue doing it because I love it and (like I read in Bridget Asher’s blog) the positive feedback feels good. One person saying they are inspired by what they read here is worth far more than 10 people saying I suck (or whatever else). I am rethinking the way I present my blog. I no longer plan to post on Facebook for those of you who arrive here via that. I have decided that if someone is meant to find me, they will. I’m not going to hang the sign out any longer.

Now to get to the reason this post is titled “A Love Song.” When I woke up this morning I checked Twitter and there was a re-tweet from @heavywhisper that posted a song and said something about taking away their man card for liking the song. Well of course it sparked my curiousity and I had to listen. I remember the song, but never really listened to it. The lyrics are beautiful and you could even interpret it as a love song to God or at least in honor of God. So I wanted to post it here because it touched my soul.

Today’s Song Spotlight is “Darkness” by Darren Hayes, fron his 2004 album, The Ten

Today’s Song Spotlight is “Darkness” by Darren Hayes, fron his 2004 album, The Tension and the Spark (it should be noted that this album was not released in the United States until it was released digitally about four years later).

Darren started out as the lead singer for Savage Garden. The duo disbanded after releasing two albums (Savage Garden and Affirmation). Darren went solo, and has released three solo albums: Spin, The Tension and the Spark, and This Delicate Thing We’ve Made. Since The Tension and the Spark wasn’t released in the United States at the time it was originally released, my husband and I ended up importing a copy (before that, though, we had managed to acquire Australian import singles for “Pop!ular” and “Darkness”). Since we acquired the single for “Darkness” while Dan and I were running our internet radio station and compiling our weekly music chart, “Darkness” was able to chart on AeschTunes. “Darkness” peaked at #12 on October 10, 2006. Personally, I really like the mood of this song, and it has to rank up there as one of my favorite songs from Darren Hayes’ solo career.

On the surface, the video for this song may not seem like much, but I really like the director’s use of darkness and light.

DARKNESS
Written by Robert Conley and Darren Hayes
(c) 2004 Rough Cut Music Publishing / Specific Music (ASCAP)

Been spending so much time underground
I guess my eyes adjusted to the lack of light
I got
Covered in darkness
Covered in darkness
Hibernating always waiting for something new
Happiness always ending
In the blink of an eye there was no one attending
No one attending
It doesn’t really matter where it all began
All I know
I got
Covered in darkness
Covered in darkness

Ever wonder why I never really truly connect
Although my eyes are open
I can hold your gaze but I am never connected
Never connected
I am famous for my generosity
They say I am the kindest
It is easier to give than receive love
Give than receive love
It doesn’t really matter where it all began
All I know
I was covered in darkness
Covered in darkness

Turning pages over
Run away to nowhere
And it’s hard to take control when your enemy’s old and afraid of you
You discover that the monster you were running from is the monster in you
Better to hold on to love
Better to hold on to love
Change will come

It doesn’t really matter where it all began
All I know
I was covered in darkness
Covered in darkness
It doesn’t really matter where it all began
Because all I know
I was lost
I was lost no no
It doesn’t really matter where it all began no no
All I know
I was lost
I feel lost
Lost no

Anytime I need to see your face I just close my eyes
And I am taken to a place
Where your crystal minds and magenta feelings
Take up shelter in the base of my spine
Sweet like a chica cherry cola
I don’t need to try to explain
I just hold on tight and If it happens again
I may move so slightly to the arms
And the lips and the face
Of The Human Cannonball that
I need to I want to…
(Bridge)
Come stand a little bit closer
Breathe in and get a bit higher
You’ll never know what hit you when
I get to you
(Chorus)
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
(Verse 2)
I’m the kind of person who endorses a deep commitment
Getting comfy getting perfect is what I live for
But a look and then a smell of perfume
It’s like I’m down on the floor
And I don’t know what I’m in for
Conversation has a time and place in the interaction
Of a lover and a mate but the time of talking
Using symbols, using words can be likened
To a deep sea diver who is swimming with a rain coat
(Bridge)
Come stand a little bit closer
Breathe in and get a bit higher
You’ll never know what hit you when
I get to you
(Chorus)
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
Ooh, ahh…
Ooh, ahh…
(Verse 1)
Anytime I need to see your face I just close my eyes
And I am taken to a place
Where your crystal minds and magenta feelings
Take up shelter in the base of my spine
Sweet like a chica cherry cola
I don’t need to try to explain
I just hold on tight and If it happens again
I may move so slightly to the arms
And the lips and the face
Of The Human Cannonball that
I need to I want to…
(Chorus x2)
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
Ooh I want you, I don’t know if I need you but
Ooh I’d die to find out
So can we find out?

I Knew I Loved You

Maybe it’s intuition
But some things you just don’t question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
And there it goes
I think I’ve found my best friend
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There’s just no rhyme or reason
Only this sense of completion
And in your eyes
I see the missing pieces
I’m searching for
I think I’ve found my way home

I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(add the whos here)

A thousand angels dance around you
(and the whos here)
I am complete now that I’ve found you
(and the who’s here)

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(and the who’s here)

Repeat chorus 3x with chorus

I was going with the song ‘affirmation’ by the ‘Savage Garden‘. I suddenly stopped by the few lines of it that shook me with some feelings. I am gonna share them right here.

I believe you cann’t appreciate real love until you’ve been burned…..
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side….
I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye….
I believe the forgiveness is the key to your own happiness….
I believe the wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed.

‘Savage Garden’ has many songs which blew the minds of the listeners. Truly Madly Deeply, I knew I loved you, To the moon and back and few more songs once made me feel different. They have listeners throughout the world.

“Affirmation” is a song by Savage Garden. It is the second single of the album of the same name.It was performed live at the Sydney Olympic Games Closing Ceremony in October 2000, with Darren wearing a t-shirt depicting the Aboriginal flag.

The music video is a collection of clips from a tour in Brisbane called “Superstars and Cannonballs”.The original Australian version of the music video comprises various pictures and footage from history.

The single was most successful in the United Kingdom where it reached #8, becoming the duo’s third (and penultimate) UK top 10 hit.

Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones of Savage Garden, two Aussie singers.

Savage Garden was active from 1997 to 2001. Pop and Soft Rock were their composition type of the music. To know more about them, click here for official website of Savage Garden

Den bästa låten enligt mig, genom tiderna, är “to the moon and back” med just Savage Garden.

This song has been on my meaning-to-MM list for forever. I recently changed my ‘About Me

This song has been on my meaning-to-MM list for forever. I recently changed my ‘About Me’ section on this blog (there are now only 25 things lol, not 100), but one of the things on the list was that I agreed with almost all the lyrics of this song. I wrote that about 18 months ago and I’m not sure I agree with so much of it anymore, so I thought I’d do a take-apart of the lyrics and get your thoughts too! Interactive Music Monday FTW.

Here is the song:

Here are the lyrics:
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
Agreed. Not always practicable, but a good thing to aim for.
I believe we place our happiness in other people’s hands
True, a lot of the time. It takes a very singular type of person not to rely on others in some small part for happiness. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it’s bad for you
Nope. There certainly seems to be a correlation (as evidenced by the 1/4 block of chocolate I’ve consumed today), but of course correlation =/= causation. To believe this, you’d have to believe that someone purposefully made junk food taste good to try to make you fat.
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
True. I guess some truly terrible parents act that way on purpose, but I don’t think that the majority of parents who screw up (and come on, whose parents haven’t made you think at some point ‘I will never do that when I have kids’?) do it on purpose.
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
Yup. Not for all people, but certainly for some.
I believe I’m loved when I’m completely by myself alone
Sometimes I feel it, sometimes I don’t.

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I don’t believe in Karma, in the sense of some great cosmic balance, but I do think that if you treat people well, they will treat you well, and if you’re an arse, people will be an arse right back.
I believe you can’t appreciate real love ’til you’ve been burned
Maybe, maybe not. I’d like to think I’d recognise it, but who knows!
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
True, I guess (and btw, it REALLY bugs me that this line uses a double comparative! Even thought Shakespeare used them and there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with them, they bug me!)
I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye
Again, maybe, maybe not. It certainly seems to be a main plot point in a lot of RomComs!

I believe you can’t control or choose your sexuality
True. And this line makes me wonder why it took Darren Hayes so long to come out! Although I guess his target audience of girls might not have bought as many records lol.
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I think both are important. And intertwined. Depending on the type of relationship you have, you can’t really have one without the other IMO.
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul
As long as we’re being metaphorical, I agree. I don’t believe in souls, but as a metaphor for personality/intelligence/all the things that make you you, then yes, definitely.
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I would hope so! For some people it would appear that it’s not.
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
100%
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I think this needs a Venn diagram. Those who disagree are probably all millionaires (or at least are well-off (but that doesn’t rhyme so well )), but not all millionaires disagree. Actually, now that I think about it, there are people all over the socioeconomic scale who are into capitalism. But I think the majority would be more well-off.

I believe forgiveness is the key to your own happiness
Maybe? It depends why you’re unhappy.
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I have thought and thought about this lyric, and am still not sure what it means. The best I can come up with is ‘after you’re married, sex isn’t so important’, but I would disagree with that. Any other interpretations?
I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists
I don’t believe in God, but I think that if he did exist, as he’s described in the Bible, he probably would endorse them. He’s pretty fire and brimstone, which matches those preachers fairly well. Jesus OTOH, maybe not.
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
Again, I don’t believe in eternity or life after death. So this is kind of a moo point (anyone who can tell me where that’s from gets an invisible chocolate fish).

Now I’m interested in hearing your thoughts! Plz to share?

I would also like to say YAY FERNS!!! I will not bore you with my gushing

And now I am off to sleep, because I worked almost eleven hours today and I have to be up at 7am because I’m playing mum for the week (dad and stepmum have buggered off to Fiji and I’m looking after my sister).
