Dopo tanto ho deciso di avviare l’attività di questo mio blog, tutt’ora senza nome .

Su suggerimento di un amico (grazie Umberto) inizio con un post dedicato all’iniziativa natalizia “Lista dei Desideri” di Save The Children. Nel sito è possibile trovare diversi regali disegnati per aiutare a cambiare le vite di tanti bambini in tutto il mondo. Il regalo scelto verrà spedito simbolicamente a degli amici, che riceveranno una simpatica cartolina, e concretamente a beneficio dei bambini delle aree in cui Save the Children lavora. Ci sono doni per tutte le tasche e sono tutti regali che possono fare la differenza, sono inoltre suddivisi per categorie: Nutrizione, Nutrizione e Sostenimento, Educazione, Salute ed Emergenza.

800.000 niños y niñas sufren las consecuencias de la violencia de género en España. ¡Como para dar lecciones de derechos humanos a los demás! Lo ha denunciado la organización Save the Children.

“En España existen 800.000 niños y niñas víctimas de violencia de género y, de ellos, 200.000 son hijos e hijas de mujeres que han recibido órdenes de protección. y se calcula que tan sólo el 4% del total reciben atención especializada.”

He aquí un argumento más para ampliar la Ley del Aborto: abortar es más barato que proveer.

Con l’avvicinarsi del Natale torno a proporre – come lo scorso anno – la Lista dei Desideri by Save the Children, l’innovativa soluzione di regalo virtuale e solidale con la quale dare il proprio piccolo-grande contributo per garantire educazione di qualità, per costruire asili comunitari e per migliorare la salute e la nutrizione di bambini dei paesi nei quali di certo le festività non fanno rima con la parola consumismo (qui di fianco l’immagine del nuovo simpatico video circa l’iniziativa).

Thank you for sharing with Save the Children your concerns over the recent auction of an exhibition piece featuring Barbie dolls.

The doll clad in a burkha was one of 10 Barbie dolls clothed by an Italian designer/artist as her personal expression of costumes from around the world.  The designer/artist’s set of 10 Barbies, each clad in different dress, was among the 500 Barbies representing different cultures that were auctioned at a charity event in Italy.  The dolls are not available for sale in any store. 

As you may know, proceeds from that event will be used to help support Save the Children’s global Rewrite the Future campaign to bring education to children affected by conflicts.  Over the past three years, with our global donors’ generosity, Save the Children has helped more than 10 million girls and boys in places of war and strife receive a better education, and has helped more than 1 million children gain access to school, which is equivalent to opening two schools every day.

Save the Children does not take a position on the designer/artist’s personal expression, and as a non-religious, non-sectarian organization is dedicated to serving vulnerable children in need worldwide regardless of theirs or their families’ cultural or religious beliefs.

Dear Mattel,

Thank you for responding, but you have not answered any of my questions, least of all my concerns that Mattel has put its name on a Barbie dressed in Hajibs and Burqas.  It seems you are just playing the Blame game, it’s the designers fault.

Mattel takes no responsibility that they approved the final design of the Burqa Barbie, that they produced the Burqa Barbie and added the Mattel stamp of approval to Burqa Barbie. Barbie is Mattel and Burqa Barbie is Mattel.

My organization PUMA PAC strives to bring awareness to the suppression of women around the world. One of the most suppressive garments on the planet is the Burqa. To label the Burqa as  “A Cultural Dress” and show case it as a costume or a fashion trend along side of a sari or a  sarong  ignores the fact that a woman in a burqa is a woman who is living in an isolation chamber. Unable to see, and walk properly, she is denied vitamin D from the sun. A woman in a burqa is denied the right to drive a car, she is not driving a pink Barbie sports car, she is denied the right to an education there are no Barbie lawyers, pilots and astronauts under the burqa and more importantly she is  denied the right to the freedom of choice, a burqa is mandatory and if she choices to forgo the wearing of the isolation chamber she will be flogged or stoned.

The burqa is a symbol of the violation of civil rights of women.

Another in correct fact in your email is that “Barbie has no religious affiliation” and that is how it should be. However, Mattel has by virtue of Barbie wearing a hijab and a burqa affiliated her with the Islamic religion. Burqa and Hijab Barbie are either Muslim or they are living under Islamic law. No other religion, culture, government commands a woman be covered from head to toe other than Islam.

I am happy to hear Mattel

The purpose of writing to you in masse was to prevent any plans Mattel might have to make commercial  the Burqa Barbie, since Iran is the third largest toy importers and Barbie in her bathing suit is banned in Iran, but Barbie in a burqa or a hijab could be a huge source of revenue for Mattel.

The fact remains Burqa Barbie was produced by Mattel and was sold at auction to generate funds for Save the Children, a charity that Neil B. Friedman, the President of the Mattel Brands Division at Mattel, Inc. is on the board of directors.  That fact remains that a charity, Save the Children, that works to protect and educate children did profit from the auction of Burqa Barbie off the backs of the girls I believed they worked to save they did profit.  The end does not justify the means. They approved of and sold a doll that seeks not to inspire girls but rather sends the message to girls that to be uneducated and sub missive and abused is acceptable to a civilized society. They sent a message to the boys who grow up to be the men who abuse women that it is acceptable in a civil society. 

Seriously what was Save the Children thinking? They above all should be aware that the burqa is a symbol of the denial of human rights for women.  

And finally, you could have produced an email that at least sounded sincere to the thousands of us who wrote you with concerns that Mattel was using Barbie not to inspire girls but to suppress girls.

Dear Mattel,

The Burqa is not a “costume” nor is it a “dress” The burqa is an isolation chamber, the women cannot see, nor walk properly. The burqa is a symbol of uneducated, sub missive and abused women. To showcase Barbie “clad” in a burqa along side of a sarong or a sari and call it “A Cultural Dress” is a disservice to the millions of women who are forced to wear the burqa or face a flogging or a stoning.

By showcasing this horrific clothing you send a message to the girls you strive to save that being uneducated, sub missive and abused is acceptable, more importantly you send a message to the boys who will grow up to be the men who abuse women that it is acceptable in a civil society to abuse girls and women.

The problem is you did not take a stand on the artist personal expression. At the very least your stand should have been Save the Children will not associate itself with a doll that undermines its mission. The end does not justify the means. And as a “non-religious, non-sectarian organization” why would you consider Barbie in a burqa to be either non-religious or non sectarian? No other religion but Islam commands a woman to cover herself from head to toe. The burqua is also a symbol of Islamic fundamentalist Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

financial gain above the needs of the children whose mission it is to save regardless of cultural or religious beliefs. However when the children who need saving depend upon you to speak against that culture or religious belief in order to be saved I expect you to do just that. Speak UP against it.

A huge blunder was made by Mattel whose President sits on the board of Save the Children and to blame artistic expression is not accepting responsibility for the choice to put both the Mattel and Save the Children stamp of approval on it.

Apologize to the women you have offended and then speak against the human rights violations the burqa represents and in the future be more aware of the choices you make on behalf of the children you represent.

I thought you may like to see what is under the veil. This is what children need to be saved from and the sooner organizations such as yours become aware of it the sooner we can begin to Save the Children.

The well-known international charity Save the Children has done its own research in Central and Eastern Europe, Indonesia, and Africa and has concluded that four out of five “orphans” have, in fact, one living parent, usually living in the same community as the orphanage.

According to Voice of America,

In a new report, the charity describes how children are treated as commodities in an industry that recruits children in order to profit from international adoption and child trafficking.

Louise Melville from Save the Children says in some countries running an orphanage is lucrative because, she says, governments and well-intentioned donors invest heavily in orphan care.

“Orphanages tend to attract a lot of donations from well meaning individuals, churches and other organizations,” she said. “And I think a lot of people don’t realize that the vast majority of children in those orphanages have one or both parents living in the same community as their child.”

Had a hard time locating the actual name of this report but I finally found it in this press release from Save the Children Canada. The report is called Keeping Children Out of Harmful Institutions. I have yet to find a link to the report itself, but the Canadian press release contains more information about the publication and the findings than the Voice of America article. Example, from the Canadian newswire:

In Central and Eastern Europe almost every child in an institution – 98% – has at least one living parent. In Indonesia that figure is at 94% and in Ghana 90%.

It’s time for everyone to retire the 143 million figure when talking about adoption.

Na última sexta-feira em Florença – Itália, aconteceu um leilão beneficente cujo objetivo foi arrecadar fundos para a ONG “Save the Children”.

O que foi destaque na noite foram as bonecas Barbie com trajes islâmicos criados pela designer italiana Eliana Lorena. Foram três versões de vestimentas: burca (cobre todo o corpo), hijab (cobre cabelo e pescoço) e xador (cobre todo o corpo, exceto parte do rosto).

Save the Children organiza un debate sobre el trabajo infantil para el próximo viernes, 27 de noviembre, en la sala Joaquín Turina del Centro Cultural Cajasol (Calle Laraña, nº4, Sevilla) de 17:00 a 19:30 horas.

Los asistentes podrán escuchar el testimonio de 4 representantes del Movimiento de Niños, Niñas y Adolescentes Trabajadores Organizados del Perú (MNNATSOP). En el marco de un proyecto financiado por la Agencia Andaluza de Cooperación Internacional y Desarrollo (AACID), viajarán durante esta semana por distintas ciudades de Andalucía para dar a conocer su movimiento y su experiencia como jóvenes trabajadores.

El movimiento de los NATs (Niños, Niñas y Adolescentes Trabajadores) surge a lo largo de los años setenta en Latinoamérica. Hoy en día, existen en América Latina y Caribe, África y Asia. Los NATs defienden sus derechos como niños, niñas y adolescentes trabajadores, y luchan para conseguir un reconocimiento social de su situación, y promover una visión positiva del trabajo infantil.

Según ellos, el trabajo no es malo en sí, el problema viene de las condiciones en el que se da. Defienden el trabajo con dignidad, pero rechazan la explotación laboral. Los NATs luchan para que los gobiernos adopten leyes que permitan que el trabajo infantil se realice en condiciones apropiadas, y combaten la explotación. Como niños, niñas y adolescentes, también defienden y promueven su derecho a ser escuchados y a participar.

En el debate intervendrán:

Genitally Mutilated Burqa Barbie! What a great idea. This is really important for girls, wherever they are from they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them." Perhaps we will even have an Islamic Martyr "Death to Infidels" Barbie with an exquisite suicide bomb belt laced with cute little bolts and ball bearings!

• Does she come with stones?
• Does her head come off?
• Does she come with a tiny vial of acid?
• Does she need to be accompanied by a man in order to leave the store?
• Who gets flogged if she takes her Burqa off in public? Doll? Or child?
• Since Burqa Barbie lives in an isolation chamber and never gets vitamin D from the sun, can I return her when she gets ill?
• Does Burqa Barbie come in a cage rather than a box?
• Who arranges Burqa Barbie’s marriage?
• If Burqa Barbie is honored killed do I get a refund?
• And when does Jihadist Ken come on the market?
• How do I keep Burqa Barbie separated from Doctor Barbie, Pilot Barbie and Astronaut Barbie? I certainly don’t want Burqa Barbie to get any ideas, because next thing she will be asking for and education or her own Barbie car, and we all know women cannot operate a car because they are too stupid besides they can’t see where they are driving.

Please copy these questions to ‘Save the Children’ and ask what were they thinking in using this slave doll as a means to generate money for children?

“Y es que cinco minutos de placer no tiene que pagarse con una vida. Los niños deben crecer con el tiempo, libres y sin miedos.” Ésta es la reflexión final de un texto que comprende una denuncia social: la trata de niños, a partir de las películas Lilja 4-ever, Holly, Anjos do Sol y el documental The World of Modern Child Slaver, que recrean la vida de niños de diferentes partes del mundo explotados por el negocio del sexo y obligados a madurar. “El dolor del placer” es una disertación originada tras la asistencia de Noemí Morejón al curso promovido por la ONG Save the Children.

Educar sem bater

Para especialista, qualquer tipo de atitude violenta transmite uma mensagem errada e o uso da força pode diminuir a criatividade e curiosidade das crianças

Pesquisa da Comissão Interamericana de Direitos Humanos (CIDH) divulgada recentemente condena o uso da força como forma de educação.

O Relatório sobre o castigo corporal e os direitos humanos de crianças e adolescentes 2009 afirma que, mesmo de forma moderada, medidas como tapa, beliscão ou chinelada podem ser prejudiciais para o desenvolvimento das crianças.

Para Márcia Oliveira, da organização não governamental Save the Children, qualquer tipo de atitude violenta transmite uma mensagem errada e o uso da força pode diminuir a criatividade e curiosidade das crianças.

O coordenador no Brasil do Programa de Cidadania Adolescente do Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (Unicef), Mario Volpi, diz que o castigo físico, mesmo em pequena escala, gera impactos negativos na autoestima e na autonomia da criança. Para ele, a solução está no diálogo.

Para a assistente social Ludimila de Ávila Pacheco e a promotora de Justiça de Defesa da Infância e da Juventude do Ministério Público do Distrito Federal e Territórios (MPDFT), Leslie Marques de Carvalho, castigos físicos deixam marcas psicológicas, que podem se manifestar de várias maneiras, tanto na infância e adolescência, quanto na fase adulta.

Leis – De acordo com o Relatório, apenas 24 países em todo o mundo possuem leis que proíbem o castigo físico e humilhante, entre eles o Uruguai e a Venezuela. O Canadá e a Nicarágua mantêm iniciativas de leis para a proibição do castigo físico e da violência doméstica contra crianças que podem ser aprovadas nos próximos anos.

No Brasil, o Projeto de Lei 2654/03 pretende alterar artigos do Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA) e do Código Civil para tornar crime a punição corporal de qualquer intensidade contra meninos e meninas. O projeto, que ficou conhecido como Lei da Palmada, foi aprovado na Câmara dos Deputados pelas Comissões de Educação e Cultura (CEC), Seguridade Social e Família (CSSF) e de Constituição e Justiça e de Cidadania (CCJC).

La Convenzione sui diritti dell’infanzia rappresenta lo strumento normativo internazionale più importante e completo in materia di promozione e tutela dei diritti dell’infanzia.

La Convenzione è stata approvata dall’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite il 20 novembre del 1989 a New York ed è entrata in vigore il 2 settembre 1990.

The reality of our present recession teaches us that our fat cats can’t sell the junk they have in their warehouses because the jingle no loner exists in the consumer’s pocket because the consumer is out of employment.

Now I do know there are a good many fat cats who are touched by starving children all over the planet. They just love to express their fellowship and support their self-esteem by contributing to the causes.
Hey the causes not always overseas. Fat cats, now get this right. The suffering might be in your big back yard. How about thinking about forming a cooperative without the principle of making a profit. How about buying up the 50,000 square foot manufacturing building that is only manufacturing cob-webs at the moment and making a shoe factory work in the good old US of A?

Is this only a dream? I once wanted to grow sunflowers and press the seeds into oil. I discovered the profit from such an operation was minimal. Ma and pa farmers had been squeezing this oil in the back of their barn for many years. They used the oil as a substitutive and additive for diesel fuel. Hence they would save $350 per year in diesel fuel. There was no way I could squeeze out a profit in the sunflower business because the purchase price of the land was prohibitive. When I tried to grow a couple of acres in Miami, I only invited the iguanas to a free breakfast. I had to wrap each and every plant in a wire cage so that the hungry animals would not feast on the tasty morsels.

So I tried to get someone interested in Haiti to do the experiment because the hourly wage in Haiti was so diminutive that workers could till the fields at only a few dollars per day. I envisioned the island being a producer of sunflower oil, and growing an oil product that could be sold on the world markets. One organizer of a food charity operation in Haiti stated, “Why would anyone work in the fields for tiny wages when they could go to the boats and get a sack of rice for free.”

Is America going to become a free sack of grain or rice operation for their starving children? Hey, fat cats, enjoy buying up all the gold you can hoard.

20th-21st September: Bodhgaya, Rajgir and Nalanda

A few days after I returned to Gangtok, I was off travelling again – this time in Bihar. To take advantage of having the Monday off for Eid, George (a colleague from the West Bengal office who was in Bihar for a week) and I went to Bodhgaya, Nalanda and Rajgir. Bodhgaya was relatively peaceful compared to Patna and the Mahabodhi temple was truly a stunning sight – very worthy of its Word Heritage Site status. However, I wondered why, out of the thousands of places to attain enlightenment, had the Buddha done so in Bihar? Triumph over adversity, perhaps? Buddhist temples opened and maintained by monks from countries such as Thailand, Bhutan, Burma, Japan, Tibet and China were scattered all over the town. Each had their own distinctive designs which reflected the different ways they celebrated the Buddha, from the ostentatious glamour of the Thai temple (complete with a chandelier!) to the sparse and simple Japanese Daijokyo temple.

The following day, we headed for Ragjir for its main attraction – a flimsy looking ski-lift up a steep hill, on top of which yet another Buddhist temple was located. Sadly, the ski-lift was out of order so we headed for Nalanda after a drinks break from the heat – another 30 minutes away by car. There lay the ruins of one of first universities in the world and an important ancient centre for Buddhist learning. The ruins themselves were interesting and impressive. It was a huge place and some parts of it were well-preserved. However, we didn’t stay for long as the forceful afternoon sun in the late September heatwave got the better of us.

22nd – 26th September: Araria

The following day I set off to rural Bihar as part of a field visit for work with my colleagues Altaf and Pranab. Over the course of the 9 hour drive there, we passed by the flooded fields in the district of Khagaria. The fields on the left side of the road heading towards Araria were flooded for as far as the eye could see. Pylons and telephone poles leaned and stand crooked under the weight of the water, and for a moment I pretended that a passage to the sea had to created in otherwise landlocked state.

Over the three full days in Araria, I spoke, through Altaf and Pranab, to over 40 beneficiaries of our ongoing projects, including children, parents, education committee members, teachers, and adults who received new work equipment as part of our livelihood support scheme. SC Bihar have also been reconstructing five schools, and when I was last there about 2 months ago, construction had barely started in some of the schools. This time, all the schools had almost been completed. It was so exciting to see the stark improvements made in two short months.

The magnitude of child trafficking in Bihar remains unknown, but such cases are never few or far between. I was interviewing a man, Patlu Rishidev, in a Musahar tola, who received housing materials as part of our shelter support programme. It turned out that he and his family had been affected by trafficking. Twelve years ago, they unwittingly sold their 8 year old son, Bholan Rishidev, to a trafficker. Patlu Rishidev said Bholan was being naughty so he wanted to teach him a lesson by sending him to work. The trafficker paid Rs. 1100 (less than £15) for his son. “We tried to search for him, but we haven’t seen him for twelve years,” he said. “I wish I hadn’t sent him away.”

El síndrome provoca que no llegue sangre al cerebro cuando un niño llora o se sorprende por algo. Se estima que ocho de cada mil niños con problemas diagnosticados como epilepsia lo padecen en el mundo. Suele tratarse con medicamentos específicos como la atropina, algo que hasta la fecha parece detener algunos de los ataques. La mayoría de casos se dan entre los seis meses y los dos años.El caso a conmovido a la sociedad británica, la que ha solicitado a la comunidad científica que trate de buscar un medicamento que evite una posible muerte de la menor posible

Una pareja de Wrexham en el Reino Unido vive aterrorizada por la posibilidad de que su pequeña Tianne llore. La razón: puede provocarle la muerte.
Tianne Lewis, de sólo dos años de edad, sufre RAS (Reflex Anoxic Seizure), un extraño mal que no permite la circulación de la sangre al cerebro cuando algo le sorprende o le hace llorar.
Andy McHugh y su prometida Ceri Lewis explican a la BBC que cualquier cosa que haga llorar a su pequeña puede parar su corazón: “Su corazón puede detenerse cuando llora y tenemos que darle golpes, por muy duro que suene, para no perderla”, explican.
Los médicos descubrieron el mal en la niña cuando tenía 18 meses y le dieron pocas esperanzas de vivir. “Nos dicen que si tardamos en hacerla reaccionar (cuando sufre los primeros espasmos que pueden llevarla a que su corazón se pare) más de 10 o 15 minutos, podríamos perderla”.
No hay una solución 100% eficaz para este extraño síndrome y los padres de Tianne piden, mientras confían en que su hija supere esta dolencia, que las autoridades sanitarias muestren más interés por una dolencia que, según afirman, padecen el 39% de los pequeños diagnosticados con epilepsia.
