Realizing I can’t eliminate the Word of the Day with a daily reflection post until the day has passed, I thought I’d explain the meaning of the words I’ve been using in the Ramadan posts.

sawm - fasting in Ramadan, one of the Five Pillars of Islam

suhoor – the time before the dawn prayer to eat a final meal before beginning fast

fajr – the dawn prayer at which time the fast begins

maghreb – the sunset prayer when the fast is broken

iftar - the meal breaking the fast

Ramadan Mubarak – a well wish to each others meaning, Blessed Ramadan

Ramadan Kareem – another well wish, Generous Ramadan

Engineered flooring is available with many different thickness of wear layers. The thinnest wear layer is only 0.6mm and CANNOT be sanded and refinished without the risk of sanding through the wear layer. Even refinishing a wear layer of 1.0mm to 1.5mm is risky business. About the only option is to screen and recoat. Screening is sanding but it just roughs up the existing finish and does not sand into the wood itself.

The best engineered products have at least a 2mm wear layer and can have as thick as a 5mm wear layer. 3mm wear layers are pretty typical in high quality engineered products. If the product is flat finished, not hand scraped and or distressed, then it can be sanded down to bare wood and refinished.

There are three ways to produce a wear layer: rotary peel (thin and characterized by a “cathederal” grain pattern”), sliced (cut with an industrial slicer which is actually just a large knife carefully controlled by hold downs and feed rolls, imagine a meat slicer on steroids), or sawn using very thin kerf saw blades for minimizing waste.
