Un concierto de jóvenes jazzistas abrirá hoy aquí el Festival Internacional Jojazz 2009 en el que competirán unos 29 músicos noveles. Desde las primeras horas de la tarde se impartirá un taller de Armonía e improvisación, a cargo del músico cubano Orlando Sánchez, y echará a andar el concurso de composición, cuyo jurado lo preside Alexis Bosch. En esta edición se incorporó el vibráfono, entre los 11 instrumentos en competencia: flauta, piano, guitarra, trombón, clarinete, trompeta, saxo, contrabajo, drums y dos cantantes, una modalidad ausente hace varios años en los certámenes. Dedicado al trompetista cubano José Miguel Crego (El Greco) por sus 35 años de vida artística, se ofrecerá una gala en su honor con nuevos intérpretes. Un taller de trompeta con varias generaciones de jazzistas entre ellos Yassek Manzano y Bobby Carcasés figura entre los momentos más esperados. El programa destaca los encuentros con las agrupaciones noruegas Pitsj y Listen y el cubano Orlando Valle (Maraca). La Casa de la cultura del municipio Plaza de la Revolución y el Teatro Mella, sedes habituales de la cita jazzística acogerán en certamen junto al Teatro Amadeo Roldán y el club La zorra y el cuervo. Auspiciado por el Instituto Cubano de la Música y el Centro Nacional de Música Popular, el certamen concluirá el próximo domingo con la gala de los premiados en 2008 y 2009.

First up is this beautifully stanced Vauxhall Astra, brother to the Saturn Astra. I have yet to see a Saturn Astra hatch on the street, granted all the Saturns I’ve ever driven had a remarkably cheap feel to them, but looking at this and seeing the potential that could be easily unlocked in them I’m surprised they’re not more popular here. Maybe people still have bad memories of that horrid Ion Redline from a few years back. I’d really like to see something like this state side.

Next the Citroen DS3, aimed straight at the Mini but lacking it’s charm and heritage. Since it’s a Ctiroen naturally it’s kind of quirky, but I could live with it.

Last but not least an older Citroen Saxo done in the ultra clean euro style I like so much. Not bagged, painted a super cool Porsche OEM brown color, Schmidt TH Line wheels, and a fully recovered leather interior.

Cancellera riding to pick up his golden jersey.

Fabian Cancellera, the man they call Spartacus, slashed his way to another Vuelta time trail win. Did we say slashed? Maybe sloshed or splashed are the right descriptors. On the slick, wet roads around Valencia, the Saxo bank rider powered to a convincing win in the 30k time trial.

David Miller (Garmin) was almost Gladiator for a Day. You could call him Triumphus, a famous combatant in the Roman arena — long dead but wicked fast with a sword. He put in a great ride, posting the best time of the day until Cancellera sliced him by 32 seconds. Bert Grabsch (Columbia) was another 4 seconds back. It was a terrific day for Garmin as GC hopeful Tom Danielson showed his excellent form in 7th place.

Back on the podium again, Cancellera donned the Oro jersey. There’s a certain Nostradamus predictability to the three grand tours this year. Fabulous Fabian wins the time trials, Columbia wins the sprints and Astana dominates the overall.

The Swiss time machine has his golden jersey back. Life is good as a gladiator — as long as tour winning.

Transmission starts….

It’s the first day of summer on this island Britain. A Peugeot 205 sits next to me snarling and rasping, headbutting it’s limiter. All around are Escorts and Corsas and Puntos and Saxos and all manner of street furniture. Amongst the humdrum a few hints of homework hit my ears. An unbadged, lowered Rover 200 rips past with a whistle and the characteristic sneeze of air that is a dump-valve. What lies beneath? A Mark 2 Escort with small, shiny, dished alloys whistles and sneezes, a true labour of love.

This is the Kingsditch end of the Cheltenham cruise. Whilst some other boys and girls are lapping the Cheltenham one-way, dodging police cars and racing each other at the lights, these boys and girls are doing the best they can to show off and fit in.

The atmosphere is tense, but only for me and the photographer who has come along for the ride. So far one cruiser (the 205 mentioned earlier) has parked head-on in front of where I am sitting, his aftermarket angel eyes on full beam to try to intimidate me. I carry on scribbling. A little later another lad gets in his Celica and smokes his front tyres whilst staring at me, all angry eyes and gurned face. I carry on scribbling. He gets out of his car and marches over to me.
“Why are you writing down number plates?” he asks me. I can smell the green on his clothes. Paranoia should always be met head on, no hesitation. I turn my pad around to show him.
“Does this look like number plates to you? Do you really think I’d be stupid enough to write down number plates in a place like this?”
His manner relaxes. He seems embarrassed. He laughs it off, tries to explain himself before walking away. He returns later to ask us what we’re doing. By that time We’re taking photos of a Sapphire Cosworth doing Doughnuts that fills the car park with scratchy smoke that a few of the lads cough and choke on.
Think hot-rodding died in the sixties? Think again.

Goodbye Lance, goodbye Johan.

There are few things more impressive than watching Lance Armstrong in a time trial, a race car engine with legs, tucked in over his bike, pounding out a relentless pace. The race against the clock is a summation of who he is: confident, powerful, driven and perfectionist.

It’s like Jordan shooting a fade-away or Derek Jeter crushing a fastball. After the Shleck brothers knocked him back to 4th after yesterday’s mountain stage, Armstrong fought his way back onto the podium with just Mount Ventoux left. Not bad for nearly 38 with 12 screws in your collarbone. Though he finished the stage 1:30 behind in 16th place, it still gave him an 11 cushion on Bradely Wiggins, who slots in at fourth place overall. It was vintage Armstrong.

Alberto Contador turned in a performance reminiscent of the Texan when he dominated the tours. The Spanish rider showed he’s not only the strongest climber but also one of the best time trialers, beating a surprised and disappointed Fabian Cancellera by three seconds. It sent a forceful message on a day when Armstrong announced the formation of his new Radio Shack team — I’m stronger than Lance, I don’t need Bruyneel and I’ll ride for whatever team I want next year.

As expected, Bradley Wiggins picked up time on rivals Frank Schleck and Andreas Kloden but the odds of him beating Armstrong up the 21 kilometer climb to Ventoux and stealing the final podium stop are slim and zilch. He could easily fall back to 6th after the grueling ascent. Mr. Day By Day appears done.

The Brothers Schleck attacked two riders. One attack succeeded, the other failed.

Attacking at the base of the Col de Roome, Andy and Frank Schleck (Saxo Bank) succeeded in breaking away from Bradley Wiggins (Garmin) gaining time on him before the British time trialer tries to return the favor in Thursdays’ race against the clock.

Unfortunately, despite repeated attempts on the Cole de Colombiere, they couldn’t crack Alberto Contador who stayed epoxyed to their wheels until finally putting in his own attack two kilometers from the summit. The three best climbers in this tour reached the finish line together,with the Spanish rider giving the stage win to Frank Schleck. The joy on Andy’s face showed how close a bond the brothers have.

The loser on the day appeared to be Wiggins and Armstrong, who were both displaced on the overall classification by the dynamic duo from Luxembourg. Wiggins fell to sixth at almost 5 minutes behind the yellow jersey. Although his teammate Christian Vande Velde did everything but push him up the mountain, Wiggins faded. His chance for a podium rests on the time trial and a miracle ride on Ventoux — a tall order for a rider nobody expected to be anywhere near the top 20 when the tour began.

Armstrong, on the other hand,  was the victim of yet another ‘unscripted” attack from Contador. Despite Johan Bruyneel’s order to follow wheels, Contador accelerated, dropping his own teammate Kloden and essentially helping the Shlecks jump ahead of Armstrong in the overall. Loyalties seem to be fraying as rumors swirl that Bruyneel and Armstrong will leave Astana to launch a new team. Contador may well feel the jersey is his and there’s no compelling reason to follow team directives.

It could have been worse for Armstrong who again demonstrated his strength, dropping Wiggins near the summit, then bombing the descent to catch Kloden and finish seventh on the stage. Alberto gained more time against Wiggins but severely damaged the chances of an all Astana podium. Not something that Lance or Andreas will appreciate after 2 weeks work.

Armstrong has proven true to his word that he would work for Contador. It’s one thing to know he won’t win an 8th tour but quite another to be knocked completely off the podium by your own guy for no reason. Armstrong said after the Dauphine Libere that Contador “has a lot to learn.” Lance must be tired of saying that by now.

What comes to mind when you think of a Vauxhall Corsa?

Or how about a Citroen Saxo? For my more mature readers, a Ford Escort or Fiesta? For my REALLY old readers a Ford Capri or Cortina E? These cars are linked together by one thing. Prejudice. They are linked to spotty teenagers who get moist at the thought of big exhausts, loud stereos and cardboard rollcages. They are driven badly, with no concern or thought for others, often covered in garish paint jobs and comedy bodykits. Later on, when spotty teen can manage to stay in a job for more than five minutes he might graduate to a Subaru, Evo or BMW transplanting the huge 1,000,000 watt stereo and any bits of the comedy bodykit that will fit on it, but still drive like a moron, not looking where he is going just watching to see if he is being noticed.

If our friend cannot afford to upgrade his ratty old Fiesta, he has an option of a small crimewave to fund it,sell some grass clippings to a few 15 year olds or maybe stick up the local post office with a BB gun and see if the old dear behind the counter will come over with the goods. Unfortunately for our hapless hero, the post office has brilliant security and the local Rozzers arrive in under a minute and our man is now face down in the back of a van in handcuffs crying for his mummy, peeing his pants. Some time later he is sent down, and his assets seized.

OK so you are wondering where this is going right? Well the first thing that strikes me is that all of the above cars, through no fault of there own are prejudiced against because of the type of people that drive them. Its not the cars fault. It has nothing to do with what sort of car they are, how they handle or how much power they have, its all to do with the fact they are cheap and readily available. Normal people will steer clear because even if you mention to your friends that you are going to look at a Saxo or 106, your friend will smile and nod but will think all sorts of nasty things. Or if he is blunt and to the point, will laugh loudly and call you names. Its hard to find a car from this genre that has not been driven round Halfords a few times, then had its engine thrashed to oblivion with only Tesco 20W/50 multigrade tractor oil for protection. But if you do find one you will be so pleasantly surprised. Saxos are fun, Corsas are fun and with a tweek or two suspension wise you can have big grins for absolute peanuts. I spent a fantastic weekend recently in the company of a lot of Evo owners who knew their cars inside and out, loved them and drove them to the limit, just how nature intended. There wasn’t a part on the cars that were not there for a reason, and not a chavvy between them, just good, dedicated drivers that loved driving. So look past the predudice, and look at the cars not the moron behind the wheel.

The second point stems from something I watched on TV last night. Top Gear destroyed a perfectly good Evo because it was an asset of a drug dealer and the Judge ruled that it was to be destroyed. James May, one of the presenters, made a very valid point that was ignored by most. He said that he felt a bit rotten, and it wasn’t the cars fault that its owner was a drug dealing scumbag, so why take it out on the car? Well I can see the point that the car is a direct result of the dirty money made on the misery of others (but if I’m honest I have no time for drug users either, they deserve all they get) and should be taken away from the criminal, but to destroy something like that is just stupid. Sell it, get it re registered and let it bring a smile to someone who appreciates it for what it is rather than what it represents.

Hmm… quite a serious and grown up blog this time, I need to rectify that! Anyone selling a Corsa or Saxo?
