When adding a medieval cathedral from the 15th century to the list of its interests, then it is worth for visit. Also it is famous for its red historical storehouses which are situated at riverside.

Swedish Movie Poster for Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Here is the Swedish movie poster for The Girl With The Golden Tattoo, which has already been released to Scandinavian audiences at the cinema and also on DVD (Swedish only). Meanwhile back here in the states, Hollywood has purchased rights for the story, but has yet to reach the casting stage for the film. The movie comes from a novel written by the recently-deceased (2004) Swedish author, Stieg Larsson, who is currently taking the literary world of crime fiction by storm with his recent release of a crime trilogy, of which this book is the first. Also available in English (or soon to be) are The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Does Anybody see a trend here.

Recently, Stieg Larsson made headlines by picking top awards at the U.S mystery convention, Boucheron. In fact Scandinavian Crime Fiction has become the talk of the literary world, most evident that noted author and TV commentator, Christopher Hitchens, who has sounded off on the late Mr. Larsson with a recent article in Vanity Fair. Christopher does an excellent job of delving into the dark side of Swedish life and the emergence or rather the continual presence of extreme right and pro Nazi forces in modern day Sweden. Anyone, who thinks this Nordic country is a poster advertisement for idyllic Socialist life should definitely read Mr. Hitchens article and maybe even one of Mr. Larsson’s lengthy novels as well.

Dont’ forget that in the mid-eighties Sweden lost a prime minister to assassination, a crime which still has not been solved. During this era, Stieg Larsson was a reporter who wrote about Sweden’s undercurrent of drug dealings, criminals and right wing extremists, who survived and sometimes thrived in the industrial Scandinavian nation. Some readers attribute Larsson’s death at age 50 to evil forces, especially since it occurred on November 9th, the date of Hitler’s Kristallnacht, but many more suggest his death was the result of extreme overwork, chain smoking and poor nutrition. Whatever the cause of demise, the trilogy of books is causing quite a stir, not to mention that each written piece will generate a movie, both in Sweden and the U.S.

One important note is that Stieg had plans for at least ten full-length novels, but in reality did not get past the first three. Still, considering the length of each piece, this is quite an accomplishment in itself and I’m sure that his readers will immensely enjoy the published effort.

In recent years, Scandinavia (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland) have seen a bountiful cultural resurgence not only in literature, but also in contemporary and traditional music. Perhaps, it is the recent economic surge that has come to these northern countries or maybe it is the awakening of old flames and aspirations. But no matter what the reason for the cultural expression, the authors and musicians of this small corner of the world do not seem to be finished with their current creative mood.

When I was at school, this is one of the questions in geography – ‘what country is famous to be called as Land of the Midnight Sun?’. Norway has been one of the countries I have wanted to visit. Imagine having a daylight for 24 hours? That’s amazing.

Well, unfortunately I was not able to experience this part of Norway yet. I have visited Oslo because I got bored in Denmark. The weather cooperated a little bit but Sunday was too cold to walk around. There are a lot of interesting places to visit and most of them are walking distance from the Oslo central station. The recommended places are: Stortinget (The Parliament), Vigelandsparken (The Vigeland Park – a very recommend place for those who love sculptures), The Royal Palace (I was able to watch the changing of the guard – 13:30 everyday), Oslo City Hall (nothing special but its still ok to visit), Akker Brygge, Oslo Opera and Nobel Peace Center (just in time as the famous Obama will be awarded as the 2009 Nobel Peace prize).

I was able to control myself in shopping because it is a little bit pricy… more than Copenhagen actually. I cannot believe there is a country more expensive than Denmark

It is the first Sunday of Advent. Time to light the first candle in the four armed candlestick – according to Swedish tradition. One candle for each Sunday of Advent. I remember when I was a kid and it felt like ages between every Sunday and that it would never be Christmas.

Stars or electric candles in the windows every where I look. I’m into stars. Here are two of them. No real snow so far, but I hope to get a white Christmas – of course. Cold, crisp air, dark sky, gleaming snow. Take a long walk to a Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. Candles and songs. Peace.

These photos were taken at Skogskyrkogården – The Woodland Cemetery – a big and exceptionally beautiful graveyard in the outskirts of Stockholm – a couple of days ago. The Woodland Cemetery was created around 1915 by the architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz and opened 1920. It was intended as a place for contemplation and peace and it is a truly special place – peaceful and majestic at the same time. Hills – space – air. The graves are situated in the beautifully gardened pine “forest”. The photo above shows the Elm hill – a place for remembrance and meditation. Since 1994 it is a part of Unesco’s World Heritage List. Below is the Elm Hill (Almhöjden) when the sun is about to set.

This church, built in 1647-1652 is looking very typical from outside, but from inside it is not. It is completly painted with allegorical drawings. One can easily imagine that if the sermon was too long or boring, then parishioners were inspecting those drawings. Now You have possibility to do the same via my photos.

Esta iglesia, construida en 1647-1652 parece muy típico de afuera, pero de dentro no lo es. Está completamente pintado con dibujos alegóricas. Se puede imaginarse fácilmente en el caso de que el sermón fue demasiado largo o aburrido, entonces parroquianos inspeccionaban esos dibujos. Cette église, incorporé 1647-1652 parait très typiques de dehors, mais de l’intérieur ce n’est pas le cas. Elle est complété peinte avec les dessins allégoriques. L’un peut facilement s’imaginer que si le sermon était trop long ou ennuyeux, alors les paroissiens inspectaient ces dessins. L'Europa aspetta l'Islanda a braccia aperte

Data la consolidata tradizione democratica e il grado altissimo di vicinanza alle condizioni poste dalla Comunità quest’isola che fa parte da sempre della cultura del Nord Europa dovrebbe entrare a far parte prestissimo e senza problemi eccessivi dell’Unione Europea

Oggi il Parlamento Europeo oggi si è espresso favorevolmente alla richiesta di adesione dell’Islanda, nel corso del dibattito generale sull’allargamento su cui ci si è soffermati molte volte su queste pagine web e su cui il sito tornerà presto. Adesso toccherà alla Commissione Europea valutare ogni aspetto.

L’Islanda è il paese europeo più lontano, ciò non dovrebbe ingannare sulla sua vicinanza umanistica al continente della cui storia fa parte. Il suo imminente ingresso nella nostra Europa rafforza nella Comunità un’area, quella scandinava e nordica, nota per il progresso sociopolitico che la sua presenza nell’Unione e nell’Efta ha apportato nel corso dei decenni.

Forte fino a pochi anni fa di una particolare economia dove la pesca rivestiva un ruolo più che significativo, l’ Islanda è stata duramente colpita dalla crisi economica mondiale, tanto che i benefici che avrebbe potuto ricavare dalla partecipazione alla Unione Europea sono arrivati a superare i timori che una stretta regolamentazione della pesca ha sempre suscitato, determinando la diffidenza verso le istituzioni comunitarie.

Sarebbe affrettato però ricondurre i negoziati per l’adesione ad un fatto opportunistico. l’Islanda fa parte da sempre della storia europea attraverso la condivisione delle vicende secolari delle monarchie norvegese e danese e oggi il suo avvicinamento alla UE si inscrive in un generale protagonismo dell’area nordica nel quadro continentale ed anzi assume un valore speciale nell’età del risvegliarsi dell’interesse e dei problemi che hanno al centro l’area Artica.

Con un sistema educativo e sanitario all’avanguardia ed una elevata consapevolezza dell’integrazione tra uomo e territorio, questa isola, governata oggi da Johanna Sigurdottir, si avvia a essere una delle molte marce in più che sotto la Presidenza Svedese e con un rafforzato ruolo di paesi come Regno Unito, Irlanda, Finlandia e Danimarca vanno spingendo l’Europa verso un posto di primo piano nel panorama mondiale.

Nel corso di un incontro sull’Artico a Roma Tuomas Aslak Juuso, rappresentante dei giovani autoctoni del nord della Scandinavia ha ripercorso i progressi che stanno permettendo a tutte le popolazioni dell’area di confrontarsi con le istituzioni internazionali

Le zone più difficili del nord Europa sono quelle al confine con il Polo Nord, dove comunità antichissime continuano a combattere le rigidità della natura ed oggi anche i cambiamenti derivati dalla globalizzazione. L’Europa è un altro tema, a parte, perchè rappresenta un enorme motore di decisioni, da cui le popolazioni più esigue numericamente e con una minore tradizione statuale rischiano di essere totalmente escluse.

Tuomas Aslak Juuso, è il presidente della organizzazione dei giovani Sami e membro del Samediggi finlandese, uno degli organi che rappresenta questi cacciatori, allevatori di renne, 100.000 persone circa, sparse tra stati diversi come Norvegia, Svezia, Finlandia e Russia. Juuso simboleggia l’incrocio tra presente e passato, lavora con le renne e si confronta con la UE, viaggia e si è laureato ma può dare lezioni a chiunque soprattutto sulle diverse condizioni atmosferiche, cui la neve può condurre, situazioni che la sua lingua descrive in moltissimi quasi sinonimi con sfumature appena differenti.

L’emancipazione dei popoli indigeni, che rappresentano circa il 10% della popolazione dell’Artico, va avanti ed i Sami, parteciperanno al vertice di Copenaghen sul clima attraverso la delegazione governativa della Norvegia, di cui faranno parte. Sono in stato avanzato anche trattative con la Svezia e la Finlandia, entrambe all’avanguardia nel riconoscimento dei valori e dei diritti delle minoranze culturali.

Esiste ancora il problema della sottorappresentazione di queste comunità in seno all’Unione Europea e problemi come i cambiamenti climatici affliggono soprattutto genti come queste, abituate ad un contatto costante con la natura, proprio laddove questa è più fragile e dove i mutamenti possono risultare più pericolosi per l’uomo.

Inoltre, i popoli che vivono nell’estremo nord si trovano a fare i conti con altri fenomeni critici, come l’urbanizzazione di molti dei più giovani, che insieme a nuove opportunità di lavoro e di integrazione porta con sè il rischio della dispersione dei modi di vita e della cultura dei Sami.

La sfida, ha affermato Tuomas Aslak Juuso, che ha 24 anni e viene da un piccolo villaggio che si chiama Karesuvanto, nella parte più settentrionale della Finlandia ed ai confini della Svezia, consisterà nel fornire ai ragazzi della comunità tutti i mezzi per competere alla parti nel Grande Nord e nel mondo, strumenti come la cultura europea e le capacità scientifiche.

Sarà molto importante però che questi cambiamenti rappresentino lo sviluppo e non la sostituzione di ciò che i Sami sono e quindi resta ferma la richiesta di lavorare ad un modello di istruzione elaborato in lingua Sami e governato dalla minoranza stessa. Il sogno di coloro che lavorano per il futuro delle comunità, espressione degli stessi villaggi, è la creazione di una vera Università dei Sami a Kautokeino, Norvegia, dove esiste già una struttura che svolge alcune funzioni universitarie per i giovani di questo popolo. Si tratta di una proposta del Sami Parliamentary Council, SPR, un organismo attraverso il quale i vari parlamenti sami esistenti cooperano.

Today Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US and Canada. A holiday that aims to think of what one is thankful for must be one of the best of reasons to have a public holiday there is. I’d happily import Thanksgiving to Europe – or at least Scandinavia. This scarcely populated area (Denmark as the exception here) with not more than 25 million people altogether (Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland) with a (partially) harsh climate, has managed to establish quite wealthy and prosperous societies in a way that – only 150 years ago – was quite unlikely. At the time the Scandinavian countries were very poor and undeveloped. I am thankful to all the people in the generations that contributed to this development. It is today hard to really grasp the extent of the work they did.

I am thankful today for getting a free education at the university, for being surrounded by good and caring people, for being able to read and write and put my thoughts to paper (with a nice pen), for living in a democracy – non-perfect, but nevertheless a democracy, for living in a country that has experienced peace for 200 years, for being able to walk and make excursions in my beautiful surroundings. I am also very grateful for having had two wonderful grandparents that have passed away, but whom I carry with me in my heart. I think about them today – gone but not forgotten.

I also want to thank the kind person that unexpectedly and spontaneously offered me help with a crucial matter yesterday. Life has its happy endings and help sometimes comes from the most unexpected directions. You proved that reality always trumps fiction – in the best of senses. Thank you for reaching out and also for giving me a happy ending to remember and carry with me. It means a lot and it made me take off and look for the sky – like the wind vane below. Good things generates good things and – maybe most important of all – strengthens the belief that it is possible to make this world a little better and kinder place.

Originally there should have been 100 tons of clay showing huge clay cube. But what happened? It collapsed, all this huge clay cube. Then somebody got brilliant idea. Let’s citizen of Helsinki (Finland) make their own art from that clay. That was nice idea, because about 1300 persons made their own art and guess if it was a great success. / Originalmente la idea era hacer de 100 toneladas un inmensa cubo de arcilla. ¿Pero que sucedió? Se derrumbó el cubo de arcil. Entonces alguien recibió una idea brillante. Se permita que ciudadanos de Helsinki (Finlandia) hagan su propia arte de arcilla. Una idea genial. Aproximadamente 1300 personas hizieron su propia arte y eso fue un gran triunfo. / Au début il aurait dû avoir 100 tonnes de d’argile pour faire une un énorme bloc cube d’argile. Mais qu’est-il arrivé ? Il s’est effondré, tout ce énorme cube d’argile. Alors quelqu’un a obtenu une idée génial.Laissez les citoyens de Helsinki (Finlande) faire leur propre art de l’argile. The mansion house where the owner of the Iron Works resided. Built in the 18th century.

These photos mightn’t be what comes to mind if one says Sweden and November, but they were taken a few days ago – during the suns regal visit that lasted one day – but what a day! The photos were taken in an old village with one of the oldest Iron works in Europe; Österbybruk. The mining, iron forging and smithy here goes back as long as the middle of the 15th century. During the 18th and 19th century it was the second biggest iron works in Sweden. A vast deal of this high quality iron was exported to the English industries in Sheffield. This kind of high quality iron could in times of high demand be almost as expensive as gold…

Recently visiting Olso, the capital city of Norway, I decided to look at the background information of the city as I wasn’t wow’ed by the scenery. Due to this disapointment I decided to look elsewhere for the wow-effect of this place.

According to Norse sagas, Olso was founded in 1048 by King Harald III of Norway. However, archaeological research has uncovered Christian burials from before the year 1000, meaning that there were earlier urban settlements. My disapointment about this location was the fact that it looked like a third-world “modern” city with little history. I was expecting more a Stockholm look into it. However, from background reading this can be understandable as big part of the city was destroyed by a fire in 1624.

The name “Oslo” originates from the Old Norse and it was probably the name of a large farm at this site. The meaning however has caused much debate. One of my favourite theories (due to my interest of Old Norse) is that Olso used to be spelled as Álso, later becoming Óslo during the Middle Ages. The earlier spelling suggests that “ás” refers either to the Ekeberg ridge southeast of the town or to the Aesir. In other words, this can be interpreted as “the meadow beneath the ridfe” or “the meadow of the gods”.

After the 1624 fire, Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV moved the city westwards, restored it, and named it after himself; Christiania or Kristiania. This was the name of the capital of Norway since then and until 1925, when the original name “Oslo” was restored. The original place of Oslo, before being moved westwards, is now known as Gamlebyen (Old Town).

One thing I found very interesting was a tiger outside the city hall. For what reason would there be a tiger in the northern europe, where there is no tiger and the animal is not symbolic for power? From background reading it was understood – the city was once referred to as Tigerstaden (the City of Tigers) by the author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson around 1870. The reason why he named it Tigerstaden was because he perceived this location as a cold and dangerous place. The name Tigerstaden has over the years nearly become an official name, so on it’s 1000-year anniversary tiger sculptures were placed outside the city hall as of celebration.

In more recent times, Olso has started being called Tiggerstaden (the City of Beggars) instead due to the increased amount of beggars and homeless people in the capital. This is probably the reason why the city looks so degraded and poor like a third world country. Apparently police men give money to drug addicts so that they don’t disturb other people. Not something I find very ethical. The picture of “the City of Beggars” later became amplified by the novel Sult (Hunger) by Knut Hamsun in 1890.

What possibly made me believe that Olso seems more like a third world “modern” city was the amount of immigrants there, which consist of 26% of Olso’s population. Honestly, it didn’t feel much like Norway to me.

If you are interested in going to Oslo one day, go there in the summer or during the first months of the year when there will be more snow. Even though Olso didn’t reach my expectations it doesn’t mean it isn’t special. Considering that it is located in a fjord makes it quite an experience; from any location of the city you see a vast sea with islands in front of you. The nature side of the city is breathtaking. The arquitecture is beautiful; there is an obvious mix of old and new buildings, some being of such an equisite design that you become wow:ed, such as the Opera house. Make sure however, to read about Olso before arriving there, so you understand many of the unexpected scenery.

just across from the sibeliuspuisto (sibelius park) in töölö, helsinki. commonly confused for a district, this part of helsinki is one of the richest in culture housing the national opera, national museum, zoological museum, olympic stadium, ice hall, etc. the town is in the western part of the helsinki peninsula and was built due to the masive growth of population in the 1920s. this body of water is actually not a lake, but actually salt water from the gulf of finland.

Con quel problema forse i paesi nordici, scandinavia o Islanda, potrebbero essere posti migliori dove vivere, ma non sono proprio sicuro che la luce sia sufficentemente tenue da non costituire un pericolo. D’altra parte so per esperienza che i paesi arabi ricchi, Emirati Arabi in testa, sono attrezzatissimi per poter vivere senza dover uscire alla luce del sole, che quando picchia fa male anche alle persone sane.
