PMD escaneia o código fonte Java e olha para problemas potenciais, como:
* Possíveis bugs – empty try/catch/finally/switch statements
* Dead code – unused local variables, parameters and private methods
* Códigos – wasteful String/StringBuffer usage
* Expressões – unnecessary if statements, for loops that could be while loops
* Código duplicado – copied/pasted code means copied/pasted bugs

PMD é integrado com: JDeveloper, Eclipse, JEdit, JBuilder, BlueJ, CodeGuide, NetBeans/Sun Java Studio Enterprise/Creator, IntelliJ IDEA, TextPad, Maven, Ant, Gel, JCreator, and Emacs.

So… the last 10 days have been somewhat of a whirlwind.

About 10 days ago, Bunny threw me a 3-week early surprise (30th) birthday party… and I was VERY surprised!!

Little beknownst to me… our good friend Tabi bought me what I had been asking for this year: A Scanner.

I had asked for a scanner because I wanted to be able to preserve many many pictures I have of which there are no negatives.  Also… I wanted to be able to scan pictures to illustrate some of the things I may talk about on this blog frequently.  Also… I wanted to see if I might be able to scan my ass.

So… after the party ended, I happily thanked everyone for their attendance and gifts, I thanked my wife endlessly for throwing me this “surprise” birthday party for me of which I had “no idea what was happening” and off I went installing my “CanoScan LiDE 200″.

It was quite easy actually. 

Here was my first scan:

You might be saying, “Awww… what a cute picture of Daddy’s Little Girl!”  Well my friends that is actually a picture of Bunny when she was just a tyke herself!  What a fascinating thing this “technology” where you can magically take something from the outside world, some black magic happens inside the scanner and then… it’s on your computer!  Forever frozen into your hard drive!  Unless, of course, your hard drive is dropped from the nearest cliff, slips into a smoldering volcano or used to tip a one-eyed midget cab driver in Chicago… then it’s really gone.

So… I was ready to scan some more things when this happened:

My two brothers passed through on their way to my parent’s house for Thanksgiving and we decided to throw mass amounts of fermented barley and hops down our gullets (as well as some aged grapes in fancy bottles)… making me unable to have a desire to scan much of anything.  I also had surgery to replace my eyeballs with tiny shiny crystals.

Then this happened:

This is Daddy’s Little Girl several days later at my Mom and Dad’s playing in leaves.  I was too occupied with keeping her cute to worry about scanning anything.

Then this happened:

Thanksgiving.  I was too fat to even move.

So after all this… I was able to then focus on scanning some stuff.

Recording artists have been using found sounds and ambient noise in their works for decades, but few have done it in ways more innovative or controversial than Robin Rimbaud, aka Scanner. Beginning in the early ’90s, Rimbaud, who is based in London, has used cellphone scanners, police radios and other devices to record electronically transmitted conversations and turn them into musical compositions. His work tests not only people’s notions about what constitutes music, but also people’s notions of privacy. It’s a little disconcerting to think that your cellphone chat with your girlfriend might wind up as raw material for an avant-garde electronic composer.

These days, Rimbaud’s become known as a “conceptual artist” who composes film scores, sound installations and various more high-brow projects in the art world. He also records with a experimental band called Githead. But he’s still trolling the ether with his cellphone scanner, too. On his latest Scanner album, “Rockets, Unto the Edges of Edges” (released earlier this year), he even sings a little–but the snippets of ghostly, disembodied, electronically transmitted voices are still in there. If every word in the dictionary had its own soundtrack, Scanner’s music is what you’d hear when you looked up “alienation.”

Der Jobo Scan Viewer löst ein eigentlich ziemlich naheliegendes Problem: Wie macht man, dass man im Digital-Bilderrahmen auch die Aufnahmen betrachten kann, die in jener Zeit entstanden sind, als der Begriff “Megapixel” selbst im Fachgeschäft nur leere Blicke auslöste?

Also wurden einfach Rahmen und Scanner integriert, auf dass man noch das wackligste verwaschene Bild betrachten kann, so es nur hinreichend nostalgische Gefühle auslöst.

Das Gerät hat ein 8-Zoll-Display (800 x 600) und kann Photos bis zur Größe von 15 x 10 cm scannen. Die können in dem 1GB großen internen Speicher abgelegt, auf USB-Sticks oder Speicherkarten verschoben oder direkt auf PictBridge-Drucker geschickt werden.

Business Card and Receipt Scanner

So you attend a business meeting or networking event with potential clients, and when you get back to your office, you have a large handful of business cards.  Now what?  You can begrudgingly start adding those contacts to your Outlook manually, or, you can use a business card scanner.Business card scanners work much like larger image scanners.  They can scan documents, read text and produce images, pdf files and digital documents.  The difference with a business card scanner is that they are usually portable, and are packaged with software that makes it a snap to add contacts to Outlook or other contact management software.   The scanner we use and recommend is the NeatReceipts scanner.  Portable, lightweight, easy to use, and not only will it scan your business cards in a snap, it can also scan restaurant receipts which can be imported directly into many popular accounting software packages like Quickbooks or Peachtree. 家にある本や書類をどうにかしたいと考えているこの頃。
たとえば、ベストセラー絵本を紹介した本が二冊あるのですが、デジタルのほうがそのままAmazonで検索できるし便利だなと思い、ブログ上にリスト化しようかと思った矢先、最近では家庭用に本を丸ごとスキャンできるスキャナがあることを知りました。これは便利！  FUJITSU ScanSnap S1500 –クリックするとAmazonに飛びます
絵本そのものはスキャンして価値があるようなものではありませんが、たとえば上記のような本や料理本、つまり情報自体に価値がある本はデジタルでいいのです。今ではPDF化したデータをiPhoneで持ち歩くこともできるし。
うーん、スキャナ。。。

Well, I did it. I took the bit in my teeth and installed Apple’s latest version of its operating system, Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), this last week. I wish to report that I was pleasantly surprised with how well it went. You see, having used Microsoft Windows for nearly 25 years, I knew better than to install a new version of that operation system (OS) on an older machine. If I was buying a new machine, sure, the latest OS was worth it because I would be installing the applications etc. from scratch. However, to install an updated version (major revision) on an older machine on top of already installed applications was just asking for trouble for which new versions of Windows were notorious.

So, it was with some trepidation that I approached installing Snow Leopard on my 1 1/2 year-old iMac. I read all the reviews and understood that Apple was not Microsoft; that because they had better control over their computers, they could better handle an OS upgrade. Thus, with some time available to handle any problems that might pop up, I gritted my teeth and purchased an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard.

The sales guy at the Apple store confirmed the install should be relatively painless but did caution me to backup all my data etc. just in case. After all, stuff does happen, like power failures during the install, and occasionally a bug in a specific configuration does appear. I backed up my data to both my external hard drive and a DVD, and then popped the Snow Leopard DVD into the machine and let Apple take over.

Installing an OS upgrade is not like installing the latest version of a favorite application program. It takes time as configurations must be copied, stored and reestablished, and documents and files swapped back and forth. As long as my computer screen didn’t go blank, blue or otherwise indicate a serious problem, I let it proceed for the 20 or 30 minutes it took to make the change. After the perfunctory reboot, my familiar desktop came back up on the screen with little noticeable change.

The first thing my new system wanted to do was check for updates via the Internet. That revealed the first problem: my system couldn’t find my Telus 3G card which serves as my “high-speed” Internet connection (we don’t have regular high speed here in the country, despite the “Alberta Advantage”). Upon checking my System Preferences, I found I had a new Internet connection using the Telus card through a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN). Once I activated it in Preferences, I found a new icon on the menu bar at the top of my screen. Connecting to the Internet was now just a click away. So off I went to the Apple site to download the latest update for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.2). That’s a 500+ Mb download that took the better part of five hours.

Next to check was the connections with my peripherals. My HP photo-quality ink jet printer passed with flying colors. However, my HP laser jet printer did not. Although, the system recognized the printer, the printer would not accept print jobs. What to do?

After double checking all physical and software connections and double checking with the HP web site about a revised print driver (where I was informed it was included with Snow Leopard), I phoned Apple technical support. Now, over the years I’ve also learned not to expect much satisfaction from telephone technical support. Of course, Microsoft was the worst for this because if you had the temerity to obtain your Windows already installed on your PC, Microsoft washed its hands of any support and referred you to the computer manufacturer. In my case, that meant talking to somebody in a heavily accented English who quickly dismissed my problem as a Microsoft one (I so love “Catch-22”).

However with Apple, I found myself talking to someone who actually attempted to understand my problem and seek a solution. She confirmed what actions I had already taken and then stepped me through some others. Unfortunately, she could not figure out why the printer would not print. She then put me on hold while she sought her supervisor. He quickly came on line, apologized for my problem, and reviewed the steps that had already been taken. Soon, he was stepping me into the inner workings of the OS where we deleted some files. I rebooted the machine and voila, my printer worked. Apparently, and old configuration had to be deleted before the system built a new one. Thank you Apple for providing the support I needed. You are an example of what customer service should be about!

Next I tried my Nikon slide and film scanner. No problem, it worked like a charm like it always has. Next, came my HP flatbed photo scanner. Problem! Snow Leopard didn’t know it existed. Before calling Apple again I decided to do some research. Using Google I soon found myself at the Apple and HP support forums where I learned HP had stopped supplying upgraded print drivers for this particular scanner for several years, and Apple confirmed this scanner was not supported. As a result, I joined the throng of dissatisfied HP customers on these forums pledging not to buy another HP scanner.

Fortunately, I still have a Windows laptop (XP) that will drive the scanner. Since I bought my Nikon scanner, I have little use for the flatbed other than photocopying. However, I do need one for other purposes from time to time. So, I will let the laptop fill the gap until I find a suitable replacement.

Thus, if you use a Mac, I recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard. It has a smaller footprint and several other enhancements that improves your experience. However, as with any OS upgrade, be prepared to take some time to fine tune; and don’t fear approaching Apple Support. They will indeed help you!

So, what’s wrong with that?

I’m streaming our radio traffic onto the internet.  You can hear the audio by pointing your browser, or Media Player, to mms://kc6yru.net:1199. It’s a stereo feed, with Channel One, the south end of the county, being on the left track.  Channel Two, the north end, is on the right track.  I was having some difficulty with the computer I was originally using, so I’ve moved it to one that should be more stable, and online 24/7.  If you listen closely, and at the right times, you may even hear me!

This feed is not provided by Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, or Tulare County, and they are not responsible for it being online.  The equipment is simply two scanners of mine, feeding into a sound card on a computer running Windows Media Encoder.

Quinta-feira passada estava dando início ao escaneamento de um cromo antigo quando o Mac onde trabalhava teve um Kernel Panic. Isso é parecido com um PC executar uma operação ilegal e ter que desligar ou com a tela azul da morte, mas muito mais raro e a maioria dos usuários de Mac nunca viu um acontecer de fato, nem sabe a cara que isso tem.

Enfim, um Kernel Panic quando você clica em algo é motivo para susto.

Nessas horas se deve manter a calma e pensar em termos do que é o método científico. Afinal, o importante é descobrir a causa do problema e não simplesmente culpar algo aleatoriamente (ou só porque a coisa é velha).

Bom, nesse caso algumas coisas poderiam ter causado o erro fatal: a primeira causa de Kernel Panics é uma memória que ficou ruim, mas isso poderia acontecer a qualquer momento e não justamente quando pedi o escaneamento; outra possibilidade seria um problema na placa SCSI ou no cabo que conectavam o scanner ao computador, ou mesmo no scanner. Em geral é um problema de hardware e não de software, mas isso está longe de ser uma regra.

Reiniciei o computador e logo mais quando pedi um autofocus do scanner ocorreu outro Kernel Panic.

Parei tudo, troquei o cabo do scanner, depois a placa SCSI, e por fim o computador todo, só não tive outro scanner para trocar, o Kernel Panic continuou acontecendo.

Meu scanner, adquirido num galpão de sucatas está morrendo talvez. Desmontei o scanner, limpei por dentro, tentei a outra porta SCSI na sua traseira, a situação melhorou um pouco e consegui progredir no trabalho e escanear até 12 cromos sem problemas, mas volta e meia ele reaparece.

Às vezes, o método científico me ajuda apenas a descobrir quais são os problemas com os quais terei que conviver.
