I had a massive ball of aran weight yarn left over…probably about 200 grams worth. It had been used to begin many different projects yet always getting ripped back because I just wasn’t happy with the acrylic sheen it carried. So it sat in my stash- the Obvious stash that doesn’t fit above my wardrobe but in a frame backpack in the middle of my room-and I stepped around it each day.
I have finally put it to good use by making a simple scarf to match my coat!

Ok, so it wasn’t too frightful…but it was snowy and cold!!!! And it’s been more than a week since I’ve written, I know…but…that’s life.

And I was inside. Sick. More on that later. Let’s get down to it, shall we?

The Work Week:

Mmm, not a whole lot to report. I DID get my H1N1 vaccine though!!! I was so excited!!!! No flu for MEEEEEE!! Now I just have to get the regular flu shot and I’ll be set.

Thanksgiving was a blur, not enough time off!! Then last week…nothing to report really. It was work. So we’ll move on.

The Workout Week:

Well…I kind of sort of not really re-started P90X.

Kinda.

I managed to remember to bring it down with me after Thanksgiving. I did 2 days of it, then got a head cold of sorts. I’m thinking I’m going to do bits and pieces of it. It’s a very intense program, and I need to build back up to that level.

I also need to get back to training for a real race!!!! AND I want to do a few tri’s in the spring…and HOPEFULLY I’ve talked a few people in to doing them with me! *looks at her people* YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!!

Also this week…I changed my first bike tire!!!

*bows*

Yes, yes, SO PROUD!!!

Well, I changed the tube. I’d never changed a tire on ANYTHING so this was an accomplishment for me!

First, I had to get the wheel OFF the bike…that wasn’t too bad.

Changing the bike tire.

Then…taking out the old tube and replacing it with the new one.

Ok...I can do this...

All in all, it wasn’t that bad. In fact, it was a heck of a lot easier than replacing strings on a string instrument….we’ll get to that in a bit. That involved puncture wounds. Not ok. *shakes head*

Tomorrow I’m hoping to get some yoga in, and later this week a run or two before the Jingle Bell 5K on Saturday.

Then on the 19th there’s ANOTHER 5K so I’ll get my 9 races in 09!!!! WHOOO!!!! Speaking of which, I need to update the Race Rollcall page.

Moving on…

The Knitting Week:

Not a lot happened over break. I looked at my projects. I glared at my projects. But I didn’t really do much on them.

I did re-start the gray scarf for Aunt Cynthia….I got mad at it.

Evil Scarf....

The old one is on the straight needle. I can’t do straight needles anymore, especially when purling!!! I wanted to rip my fingers off every time. So…I’m switching to Addi’s and doing a straight knit. It’ll go faster, because let’s face it, Christmas is COMING!!!

Then Aunt Sarah’s hat is coming along nicely. I don’t think I’m doing the decreases exactly right…because my number ended up a little off….but…I’m just going with it. It’ll be a beret, and she’ll like it no matter what.

It's almost done!!

Other than that…I worked a little on Aunt Connie’s socks…toe up for the first time. On DPN’s. Not so sure how that’s gonna go…

Now it’s time for this week’s….

Favorite:

I’m going to have to go with a good, wet, sticking SNOW. Just like the one we got this week!

Mmmm snow!

Big, fat, HUGE flakes. The kind that’s PERFECT for making snow men. The kind that’s great for sledding…the kind that gets you out of school. Mmm, snow.

I didn’t get to go sledding, or make snow men, but I did spend the day watching it snow from the coffee shop window with the BFF. We had a good time even though we didn’t play outside much!

Other Junk:

Well, over Thanksgiving I did get to see my best friend and new new baby boy. I took them out for her birthday lunch so that was nice.

During the week I did manage to get some work done in my house. I hung up some pictures finally!

Yeah, they are cheap frames from Walmart...but hey, for thirteen bucks...I'll take it!

Then I spent some time this weekend with Carly and Calypso…

Mom, I don't trust you...

And, upon coming home to see Tracy Friday night…I found this.

What's in that case???

FIDDLE!!!!!!!!

Yeah. I nearly screamed. He traded his guitar in to buy me a fiddle. I am still in shock.

So the fiddle caused me to also want my dulcimer. So that meant a trip to the music store to get strings since one was broken…and of course since we were at the music store, I had to buy a fiddle book!!! And some picks. And a mute for the fiddle (Which I cannot for the LIFE of me figure out how to put on…any suggestions?!?!) and other randomness.

Remember how I said changing a bike tire is easier than changing strings?

Yeah.

So I brought the dulcimer and fiddle home….much to the cat’s dismay…

Tomorrow, there WILL be a hairball on this, you do understand that, yes?

And I replaced the one broken string on the dulcimer.

And while tuning it…I broke another.

Good thing I bought a pack of strings at the store!!!

Now all the strings are replaced, and I’m working on remembering how to play. So far I can play a mean “Hot Cross Buns” and a pathetic first line of “O Little Town of Bethlehem”…

I haven’t done much on the fiddle yet. I can make it make a noise that doesn’t send animals and small children in to tears. That, I think, is progress.

That and my request for lessons from a local music school.

So now we shall close with our

Stellar Snowy Shoutout:

This week’s shoutout goes to Miss Chrissy….who has expressed a mild interest in doing a triathlon and I am using this shoutout as a shamless attempt to twist her arm in to joining me in April and doing a tri!!!

Chrissy you do NOT need someone there kicking your butt to do it. YOU can kick your own butt. I will be your online support system…but YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

DO IT!!!!!!!!!

Ok, have a great day/holiday/week/whatever everyone!!!!!!!!

Not since Limp Bizkit collaborated with Jay-Z has the union of heavy metal and (w)rap been worth its weight in platinum. A fashion hybrid really, the latest stud from celebrity brand Tolani’s collection of sumptuous scarves incorporates that current craving for embellished details with our warmest winter necessity.

Whereas dainty details and floral fillers were once part of the formula for femininity, the woman of today means business and knows how to exude a sense of empowerment with the slightest of accessories. No longer does tough-chic conjure images of biker chicks in leather, chains, and with helmet hair. No, she’s more a vision of authority; a vision of capability; a vision of physical dominance.

Studded details are a head to toe must-have in more ways than one, from the fall hard-core rendition of Chuck Taylor high tops by What Comes Around Goes Around to the latest luxury scarf to hit Michelle Gellar’s hallway closet. Though she might have retired from the vampire game long ago, perhaps the resurgence of our cave dwelling enemy has her and Halle Berry paying particular attention to their necks these days.

Realistically, during these chillier months, more often than not our intricate tanks and nifty necklaces get smothered by bulky outerwear. While we all know that only freshmen brave the arctic in little more than spaghetti straps and open toed pumps, it’s still tempting to rip off our insulation and show off what’s underneath. But then again, what a ghastly error it would be to affiliate with that collectively juvenile age group (or to catch the whooping cough, for that matter).

The Tolani stud scarf instead makes outerwear the layer to show off…the type that makes you want to keep on the winter gear upon entering a crowded room. So when the hostest with the mostest points to the guest bedroom for coats and other extras, you won’t hesitate before saying, I think I’ll hang on to this.

And, there’s still time to knit this one before the Holidays!

The sample shown here was knit using Bernat Soy Natural Blends yarn — a lovely yarn with just that little bit of sheen that will make this a perfect “out on the town” scarf. Knit it in a lovely merino and it becomes great for everyday wear.

Busy, busy. I haven’t had much time the last few weeks, but I just wanted to post an update. I recovered from my “stall out” and was back in the swing pretty quickly. I finished the Baby Yeti sweater, and the bonnet that I was working on.

I didn’t finish NaNo, but I had a great time doing it and will definitely try to be more prepared for it next year. I don’t feel too bad about my stats though. I finished with just over 25,000 words. Only half of the requirement, but not too shabby for a first timer. Next year, I’ll try to have more of my Christmas knitting done earlier so that I won’t feel the pressure of having so many things going, and maybe I’ll be better able to stick to the daily word goal. It was unfortunate that this year MIL’s cancer returned, and some of my “lost” time was spent at the hospital. But those are things that we can’t plan for, and I know that I’ll be looking forward to next years NaNoWriMo all the same.

Moreover, I have started and finished two scarves and I’m moving on to mittens for the grand baby. Wish me luck on that one! I’ve never done mittens before, so I’m hoping I can manage that thumb.

Pictures coming soon. (I forgot to get pics of one of the scarves & I don’t know if I can get it now, but I’ve got all the others.)

Happy Holidays!!!

I had a large ball of aran weight yarn that has been sitting in my stash for quite some time.
How is the weekend over already??? Too much fun having fun means Monday AM is going to slap me in th

How is the weekend over already??? Too much fun having fun means Monday AM is going to slap me in the face, but I’m trying to think about it as I enjoy my (sugar-free) hot chocolate with (light) whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles. My first official holiday (read: ugly Christmas sweaters encouraged) party was this weekend and with all the festivities (ahem, eggnog and Christmas cookies) I think the gym is calling… Umm, walking from one end of the mall to the other and freestyle performances of the Mean Girls “jingle bell rock” dance count as exercise, right?

While (not) watching football this afternoon, I spent an abnormal amount of time on Etsy looking at customized (preferably letterpress) stationery options for a gift but have yet to make any purchases… Apparently I’m not as efficient in shopping for paper goods as I am for dresses, jewelry, or anything I can actually wear… Anyone bought stationery on Etsy before? Suggestions??

(via Sarah Seven)

It’s quite possible I spent more time distracted by other things on Etsy (like Sarah Seven’s shop, I’m still amazed with everything she makes) – really, it’s an addiction. Thankfully I never really got hooked on eBay (I need everything to have a “buy it now” option) because that could really turn into a problem… Anyway… I tend to shy away from red and green most of the year, but I kept finding myself drawn to un-Christmasy things in those colors. And all these things would make great gifts, so I thought I’d share… you’re welcome!

The {AO3} DESIGNS shop has such a cute collection of clutches in various patterns. I love how the green and red ribbons pop on these versatile black and white options! Pictured are the Alexis Clutch in black and ivory damask and apple green ($45) and the sofia model ($45) – but seriously check out the shop because there are a ton of great options (and they’ll custom make them for you too)!

I have long been a fan of Nadinoo’s delightful collections and the Sunshine’s red bow dress ($185) keeps popping up on my searches for dresses with bows. Kind. Of. Obsessed. The Pixie’s Peacock blouse ($145) with a peter pan collar and peacock feather print is adorable too – especially paired with that little metallic brocade skirt!

I’m admittedly guilty of Necklush lust. I’d take one in every color, but obvs these green ($62) and red ($115) options are the perfect numbers to add a festive touch to an outfit while keeping you warm too!

Fuss Jewelry was one of the first Etsy shops that I ever fell in love with enough to bookmark, and I still think the jewelry is gorgeous. All of the pieces manage to make a statement while still appearing delicate. While I’m usually drawn toward blue and pink gemstones, I think the Berries on Ice Earrings ($119) and the Rich Aqua Green Flourite Flower Necklace ($158) are pretty stunning as well.

Scarves are an important accessory for a young person, man or woman. They are even fashionable in the summer, for making a statement or just decorating the neck. Pashminas were the winter standard for many, combining exotic patterns and a soft weave.

For this winter, I’ve noticed:

Knit is in.

The warm, wooly scarf appears to grace the neck of many a college student. I’ve even seen a few cowls, which surprised me. For me, a good handknit scarf has to be bulky and not itchy. I want a scarf with which I’m comfortable trudging to the North Pole.

The knit scarf is ideal because it puts comfort first. Sure, it’s fashionable this winter, but I take more pleasure in the fact that my neck is being hugged by baby alpaca wool. Makes me all warm inside.

I posted my proposal to Cast On in time for the submission-deadline this past week, but probably won

I posted my proposal to Cast On in time for the submission-deadline this past week, but probably won’t hear whether they’ve accepted all or part of it until the middle of this coming week. I’ve been working on my prototype, checking out necklines, gauges, and increase rates, but I figure there’s limited value in working too far on it, in case they select a different yarn or size (or designer). . . , so I wouldn’t want to go all the way down to the underarms at this point. . . (would I?). . . .

In the meantime, I’ve worked on some gift items that might get pushed aside once I hear back from the magazine. I re-blocked the lace edging on that wonderful neck-scarf I made in the Schoolhouse Press Knitalong back in October (pink and purple Kidsilk Haze — yumm!), to get back the scalloping that my first blocking had straightened.

And I made good progress on a ribbed cap for a former pastor. It’s a bit more than 7″ tall now, so any more straight knitting will make for the turn-up brim, and then I should move on to the decreases-in-pattern. I’ve set it aside for today, to take a break, but I hope to finish it before the committee writes to me and knitting time becomes more hectic. The yarn is Debbie Bliss “Merino Aran” in charcoal, 1×1 rib, on US 8 (5 mm).

I’m in no particular hurry to finish up this hat/scarf set in Noro Silver Thaw (50% wool, 25% angora, 25% nylon, color #5, hat on US 8, scarf looser on US 9). My plan is to donate it to a charitable craft sale run by the gal who taught me to knit, and that won’t happen again until *next* November. I’m nearly through the first skein, but have an entire second skein after that! I can just enjoy the knitting at whatever pace fits in between other, more “urgent” projects.
I’m not *especially* fond of the yarn — I like Silk Garden better — but the set is turning out pretty well. I consider this part of my series of projects using lots of different types of slow-color-change yarns, including Noro as well as other brands.

I have even worked another set of “Korean” (according to Kaffe Fassett in his KF’s Pattern Library book) stripes on my Fair Isle Sampler Scarf. It has been snoozing for quite some time, but I pulled it out again today for some restful, non-panicky knitting. There is something about this project that I find so soothing!

I am actually quite proud of this. Inspiration for this came from someone elses scarf which is actua

I am actually quite proud of this. Inspiration for this came from someone elses scarf which is actually lots and lots of different pompoms joined together. This gave me the idea of using up lots of bits of wool and creating a paperchain. Of course when you float around the net you discover that its already been done so I did end up following a pattern. But the combination of colours is my choice, partly dictated by what I had in my (small) stash and partly by the chocolate brown coat of Flapjack Queen.

Pattern: From someone elses blog will add the link later I’m feeling lazy

Needles: 4 mm

Yarn: Leftover Toft Farm Alpaca DK (brown), 1 ball of red 100% wool, DK from charity shop, orange leftover acrylic DK and 1 ball of 4ply golden yellow Rowan wool bought specially for the scarf as it seemed too short and the yellow went well.

New: nothing, but it did remind me how much I really really hate sewing things up. If you hat making up too then this really isn’t the project for you.

I was lucky enough to be there the first time she wore it (not surprising since I’d just given it to her) as we walked to do the school pickup and was so pleased by how much she liked it and the compliments she got on it…a cynic would say that perhaps that’s why I gave it to her on the way to collect the children, but honest it was the first chance all week I’d had to give her the scarf as I’d only finished it the night before !

Mizrahi's Plaid Junior's CheesecakeWe love Isaac Mizrahi, who had his official debut on QVC Saturday

Mizrahi's Plaid Junior's Cheesecake

We love Isaac Mizrahi, who had his official debut on QVC Saturday night, but we’re not crazy about how he’s “plaid mad” with his collection for the home shopping network.

And we are especially disappointed that he and QVC are hawking plaid cheesecake from Junior’s for a “holiday surprise price” of $39.94.

Let’s see, with $11.22 handling and shipping, that makes this 8-inch cheesecake more than $50. Well, we guess that’s a bargain compared to the regular price for the cheesecake, which is $48.50. So with the regular price plus shipping and handling, Mizrahi’s QVC plaid cheesecake is roughly $60.

“It’s going to be the best cheesecake you’ve ever had,” host Lisa Robertson said.

Not for nothing, as we say in Jersey, but it better be the best at that price. We don’t care if it got three five-star ratings already online.

Tiime out for a reality check: Has anyone told QVC, or Mizrahi, that there is a recession and a 10 percent unemployment rate in this country? As part of that tenth of the nation we will not be buying $50 plaid cheesecakes for the holidays. But QVC sold more than 2,000 of them.

“My first food product,” Mizrahi said. “Plaid cake, plaid plate.”

The Brooklyn-bred designer was talking about the various plaid houseware items he has done for QVC. But there are also plaid shoes, plaid clothes, plaid blankets, plaid pajamas, plaid everything. We’re not so crazy about the plaid, to be honest.

QVC shot Mizrahi’s show at his studio in Manhattan, where the home shopping network has built a set to show off the designer’s line. There is a modern living room area with an off-white fireplace, white sofas and glass tables. There is also a nook that’s got a bed in it, all the better to show off Mizrahi’s plaid blanket.

There was a painting of Mizrahi’s dog Harry over the fireplace, and one of his dog Dean over the bed. Harry was featured in a silk scarf that incorporated sketches that Mizrahi drew of his mixed-breed mutt. The scarf was $47.

“This is going to be my Christmas present to everyone,” he said.

Mizrahi said he’s been working on his QVC collection for the past six months, and showed viewers his “Inspiration Board,” where he posts photos and fabric swatches as he works on his couture collections. He said he has one for QVC, as well as a personal one at his house.

Mizrahi and Robertson had a nice rapport, although when they took calls from viewers they kept speaking over them. Robertson said that because they were in New York, there was a time delay with the calls that was causing the problem.

The logo for QVC’s Isaac Mizrahi Live! line is “a daisy of exclamation points,” according to Mizrahi.

Sorry to bore people who have already read this, but we interviewed Mizrahi years ago for a story on the impact of AIDS on the fashion industry that won us a Gerald Loeb Award. He was nice, smart and articulate.

We loved — and miss — his apparel at Target. In fact, we wore a one of his black Target dresses to the Emmys last year. The price of the dress? A whopping $59.

By the way, Robertson was rocking some cleavage, especially when she bent over the plaid cheesecake. And of course, she said she was going to buy half of the Mizrahi items she presented.
