Inspired and intrigued by one of my favourite blogs, I have created a mixtape. It’s a bit rough around the edges (i.e., you might have to turn your volume up and down a few times), but I’m learning, promise!

I mixed this with Audacity, free audio editing software, and the cover is made with Inkscape.

Really I think the surprise of the tracks is important to its enjoyment, but here’s a track listing anyway:

Been a little bit, hasn’t it? I’ve had some ideas, but as is the norm when I get one of those, they were to grand in the scheme of things. I’m slowly working on them, though. I already have an idea that I can actually accomplish in the next few days. It should be fun. Until then, here’s five more songs I’m really enjoying right now. Hope you all enjoy!

Alice in Chains – Check My Brian

As stated before, I love Alice in Chains. They are the most unappreciated bands from the early ’90s Grunge-era of music. They are heavier than most of the bands to come out then(aside from Soundgarden perhaps). I never thought I’d see another AIC single after the death of frontman Layne Staley, but alas they have returned. It doesn’t sound like they’ve missed a beat if you ask me. Yes, this song rocks.

Cage The Elephant – Back Against the Wall

Another repeat band on my blog, but it’s definitely deserved. I totally dig this band. They’re young, too, so I’m hoping for great things from them in the future. Check out the lead singer during the solo, he’s able to do his thing a bit. Check out their live stuff. The dude is nuts. In a good way. Am I the only one creeped out by the gnomes?

Muse – Uprising

Without question, this album is the one I’m most excited for this year. Their “Starlight” is one of my all-time favorite songs and their HAARP concert from Wembley Stadium blows everyone out of the water. Seriously. Check it out on DVD or youtube. They’re incredible. This is their first single off the new album. If this is any indication, I don’t think I’m going to be disappointed. By the way, there’s an awesome fan made video on youtube of this song playing during the climax of V For Vendetta. It’s pretty rad.

Paramore – Ignorance

I really like Paramore. I don’t care what any of you say. They rock and that’s that. I’m very happy that they got their differences out of the way and back to work. I love their stuff. Miss Williams has a set of pipes on her! One of the better female rock singers to come around in a long time. And yes, she’s really hot, too.

Scars on Broadway – They Say

This song is a little older than the others. Unfortunately, it didn’t get enough play. These are the guys from System of a Down, minus singer Serj Tankian. Just like SOAD, they have something to say here which is pretty rare nowadays. This is an awesome song that kicks all sorts of ass.

John Dolmayan, tobarul de la SYSTEM OF A DOWN, a platit 317.200 de dolari pentru a deveni proprietarul primei reviste de benzi desenate care l-a avut personaj principal pe Superman, “Action Comics”.
Conform presei, Dolmayan nu numai ca este un fan al revistelor cu benzi desenate, ci are si o firma specializata prin care face afaceri cu astfel de publicatii.

Cu SYSTEM OF A DOWN e pauza acum, insa proiecte separate exista. Asa este si SCARS ON BROADWAY, in care activeaza John Dolmayan si colegul sau de la SOAD, chitaristul Daron Malakian.

Morning.  Couple of rumors for you to start your day off.  The most interesting of the two surely has to be the one involving System of A Down/Scars on Broadway drummer John Dolmayan auditioning for the vacancy in none other than the yesterday mentioned Smashing Pumpkins.  This is interesting mainly because it’s not a rumor.  You can see the photo yourself; Dolymayan did, at the very least, sit behind a drum kit in a room with Billy Corgan and some red curtains.  But why on earth would this guy take on what could only be assumed to be a side gig?  The very enjoyable Metal Sucks blog has some theory on this, which more or less amounts to a sinking feeling that there’s not going to be any new System of A Down music for a while.  I guess we’ll know soon enough.

The second rumor involves the 2nd reunion of Sunny Day Real Estate, and unfortunately I don’t have any photographic evidence of this one.  A little bit of research though has tied the rumor to a disc jockey out of Seattle named Marco Collins, who apparently let it slip that the original line up is indeed rehearsing and planning to tour.  But there’s also this guy, Brian Perkins, whose was spotted posting about the reunion on Twitter, saying a “little rainbird” told him about the reunion which would also include festival dates (one can only assume this summer).  What’s weird is that I can’t find that original post on his Twitter page now, though I did find a reply that states “Yeah Nate’s on board. Summer festival dates looks like…”, which is most certainly in reference to bassist Nate Mendel.  So, Brian Perkins.  Google yourself.  Find this blog.  And then tell us who the hell you are and how you know this.  Personally, I have mixed feelings about a reunion at this point.  I’d definitely love to see them again and with Nate back on board, but I’d almost prefer it if they don’t even think about recording new material.  Let sleeping dogs lie.  Or, you know, there’s always that band The Fire Theft you guys started and then sort of let hang out to dry.  Not to mention, singer Jeremy Enigk has a freaking solo record coming out next month.  How’s he going to support that if he’s touring with Sunny Day?  But whatever.  Hit the road and I’ll be there.  Can I make one suggestion?  Get the reunited Far to open up for you and you’ll pretty much win the hearts of old fanboys in a nano-second.

Now then, as promised in yesterday’s comments here’s Zakk Wylde playing a song he more or less wrote on the spot for his wife while hanging out and jamming with the guys from Talking Metal and Bumblefoot from GNR.  Great little ballad:

I really like that song.  There’s a nice laid back approach to the performance, I think.  That’s not to imply that they didn’t work their asses off in the studio to get that sound, but listening to it feels kind of relaxing, or dare I say, chill?  I do dare.  I do.  Anyway, enjoy the day.  More tomorrow…

Well I thought it was about time I put togther some sort of playlist for you guys.

In the end I decided the best way to approach it, rather than a ‘hot new bands’ type of thing would be to put togther the stuff I’ve been listening to the last few weeks and see what you think.

One last thing to note is I am showcasing great music (in my opinion) in this playlist I cannot ‘mix’ and I’m not a DJ. I’ve just segued the tracks to stop people ripping them off.

Gran tema de la banda estadounidense compuesta por los ex-miembros de System of a Down Daron Malakian (voz y guitarra) y John Dolmayan (batería).

Y su disco no es más ni menos que un conjunto de canciones realmente buenas, con un sonido muy a lo SOAD. Podemos decir que estos tios han conseguido hacer música de calidad y además venderla. Todo un reto hoy por hoy.

Gli Scars on Broadway sono la band formata nel 2003 da Daron Malakian (chitarrista e seconda voce dei System of a Down), per la quale si sono alternate negli anni diverse line-up (la prima formazione comprendeva addirittura Casey Chaos degli Amen e Zach Hill dei Team Sleep).

I momenti che ne hanno determinato l’evoluzione da side-project a gruppo vero e proprio sono stati essenziamente due, ovvero la messa in pausa (forse definitiva) dei System of a Down da parte di Malakian, e l’assorbimento in line-up di John Dolmayan (drummer dei System of a Down), entrambi avvenimenti del 2006.

L’omonimo debutto Scars on Broadway (Interscope, 2008), a sentire le dichiarazioni di Malakian, avrebbe dovuto allontanarsi decisamente dal suo tipico stile (tra le influenze sul disco, il chitarrista aveva citato Neil Young e Brian Eno), e invece conferma ampiamente tutte le previsioni, dal momento che il sound è un mix di tutte le influenze che Malakian aveva già immesso su Hypnotize: hardcore melodico, punk-rock, hard-rock alla 1980s, alcuni riff groove-metal, frequente utilizzo di contrappunti vocali.

Parecchio incomprensibile che in apertura vi siano due dei pezzi più scialbi e piatti del lavoro, ovvero Serious e Funny, ai quali seguono invece due dei pezzi migliori, ovvero le travolgenti ed esplosive Exploding / Reloading e Stoner-Hate.
L’album prosegue regalando ancora una manciata di buoni momenti: World Long Gone (con leggerissimi ma ben integrati tocchi di pianoforte), Kill Each Other / Live Forever (la più catchy tra le tracce ricalcate su quelle di Hypnotize), Enemy (valorizzata da, finalmente, imprevedibili cambi stilistici), Cute Machines (guidata da stratificazioni chitarristiche, drumming esplosivo e travolgenti influenze post-grunge), ma soprattutto la conclusiva They Say (il capolavoro del disco, non a caso estratto come singolo di lancio, guidato da una ritmica inarrestabile e un memorabile refrain di distorsioni chitarristiche).
Le restanti tracce, tutte eccessivamente piatte e in confronto abbastanza scadenti, vagano tra episodi influenzati dall’hard-rock alla 1980s (Insane, Universe, la più catchy 3005) e la stanca fotocopia delle tracce di Hypnotize (Babylon, la ballad Whoring Streets). Il punto più basso dell’album si tocca tuttavia con Chemicals (Malakian che tenta di imitare vocalmente Serj Tankian, parti chitarristiche noiose, liriche sciocche, maldestre comparsate di synth).

A conti fatti, Malakian perde su quasi tutti i fronti con il debutto dell’ex-collega Serj Tankian (Elect the Dead, uscito nel 2007), al quale Scars on Broadway risulta superiore forse solamente nell’utilizzo degli arrangiamenti (a conti fatti anche eccessivi nel disco di Tankian, mentre qui minimali e funzionali).
L’album palesa innanzitutto alcuni fatti già resi evidenti da release come Hypnotize, ovvero i limiti del Malakian musicista, con i suoi pregi (chitarrista creativo e incisivo, a volte ottimo melodista) e difetti (incapace a sostenere da solo il songwriting di una band senza cadere in ridondanze e piattezze, scarso liricista, timbro vocale stridulo, capacità vocali nettamente inferiori a quelle di Tankian).
In secondo luogo, mostra anche un’eccessiva fretta in fase compositiva, dal momento che una buona metà dei pezzi suona piatta e banale, e ai tempi di album come Mezmerize sarebbe finita divisa tra scarti e B-side.
Qui c’era il materiale giusto per rilasciare un ottimo EP, selezionando solo Exploding / Reloading, Stoner-Hate, They Say, Cute Machines, Kill Each Other / Live Forever, Enemy e forse World Long Gone, mentre invece queste buone tracce sono affogate e disperse in un mucchio di composizioni mediocri, tanto per far uscire un full-length.
Malakian, invece che limitarsi ad imitarlo vocalmente a sprazzi, dovrebbe prendere maggiore esempio da Tankian, diventando meno autoindulgente e rilasciando un nuovo disco quando tutti i pezzi saranno come minimo discreti; e, nel frattempo, potrebbe anche pensare a ricucire i rapporti col più talentuoso collega, per rimettere in piedi una band che aveva molte più cose da dire.

Kom just på ännu ett band som jag verkligen vill se live. System Of A Down. Jag minns än i dag när jag hörde dem första gången och just då stog världen stilla en stund.

Bandmedlemmarna verkar vara driftiga killar i alla fall. System Of A Down släppte sina två senaste album med bara 6 månaders mellanrum (2005), och nu har de dagit igång olika egna projekt. Sångaren Serj Tankian släppte en soloplatta för ett år sedan, och två av de andra killarna släppte i våras sitt debutalbum med Scars On Broadway.

Jag saknar SOAD. Kom tillbaks snart och spela i en stad nära mig. Kan tipsa om Malmös nya arena!?

I had no idea this was a System Of A Down offspring. (In all honesty, from the name and cover, I assumed it was going to be an emo band of bad proportions). But with a familiar blend of metal-edged rock, the eerie vibe and distinct vocals, it’s unmistakably SOAD in some form. It’s lead-guitarist and backing vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan, out of interest, and it’s all that we’ve come to expect from the Armenian-Americans. There’s the standard political message – “Maybe I don’t know how many people are starving in this world long gone”, the ball-busting drum beats, the headbang-encouraging riffs and perhaps all that’s missing is Serj wailing in the foreground. Or not. This works quite well without him, and SOAD fans will no doubt snap this up while the hiatus continues.

It’s that time of the year again. First up, here’s some contemporary hard rock courtesy of System of a Down side project Scars On Broadway:

Now some from the past. Iron Maiden perform a song written back when they were a bunch of East London punks to a stadium full of Swedes. You might wanna skip the two minutes of talking, but stick around for the triple guitar breakdown in the middle, one of the finest moments in musical history.

Next, Slayer with the riff that spawned rap-rock after Public Enemy sampled it on She Watch Channel Zero. Don’t blame either of them for that, though. Slayer is basically Iron Maiden played twice as fast, which is good.

Finally, Judas Priest. Not many people know that spikes and black leather were popularised in metal by Judas Priest singer Rob Halford, who is gay and kitted out his band with bondage gear from Soho sex shops.

A falta de inspiración para otro tipo de posts, he decidido tirar del youtube y las canciones. Estas cinco que os voy a presentar a continuación son canciones que llevo desde hace tiempo en el mp3 y no puedo dejar de escuchar. Creo que no tengo buen gusto en cuanto a música pero estás canciones para mí son simplemente perfectas, tanto en melodía como en letra.
Como siempre, no sé cuánto durarán los videos en youtube, así que si no los podéis ver por aquí, sólo tenéis que buscarlos.
