Since we started the Tracery Blog last spring, we’ve received a lot of questions about the pai

Since we started the Tracery Blog last spring, we’ve received a lot of questions about the paint colors used in many of the photographs of our work that we’ve shared. We’ve always been a little reluctant to reveal too many details about projects we’ve completed–our wonderful clients pay us to make selections for them and we want to be respectful of that and not give too much away. We do understand though how difficult it is to find really great paint colors (or faucets, or light fixtures, or tile) so today we bring you the first installment in a new series, [tracery tips]

A quick review of our work will reveal that more often than not, we prefer neutral paint colors. That’s not to say we don’t love a colorful space from time to time, but we tend to prefer adding color through artwork, a pillow or a well-selected piece of colorful furniture. Today we want to share our favorite basic neutrals: the best white, the best natural, a wonderful charcoal, a solid chocolate and basic black.

We’ve been known to use pure white from time to time, but most of the time our go to white is Benjamin Moore’s ‘China White’ (#I-74)

China White has just a touch of grey to it, which makes it sophisticated and calm, and helps it avoid being too glaringly white. We’ve used this color, a lot….several clients’ homes, the Birmingham office we share with Dungan Nequette and The G Brand and Doug’s own house all sport China White. We’re about to have our Rosemary Beach shop repainted China White as well. When doing an all white room, we like to paint the walls, trim and ceiling all the same–it helps make the space feel huge!

—

You’d think it would be easy, but finding the perfect natural color for walls can be very difficult. Almost everyone has lived in an apartment at some point with supposedly neutral walls that were too pink, too peach or too vanilla. Our preferred color in a situation where we want walls that aren’t white, but aren’t anything else either is Benjamin Moore’s ‘Grant Beige’ (#HC-83).

Grant Beige is the color of linen. It’s just slightly grey, but never picks up any other color…it’s great when paired with another basic like white, chocolate or black but also works well with color. It’s a wonderful, serene color and works every time we try it.

—

Charcoal grey continues to be everyone’s new favorite color. After much experimentation last year (in which a certain kitchen island was repainted no fewer than three times!) we finally found the perfect charcoal, Benjamin Moore’s ‘Kendall Charcoal’ (#HC-166).

We’d consider charcoal grey to be a generally cool color, but there’s something very warm about this shade. We love it so much, in fact, we chose Kendall Charcoal as the basis for the new charcoal color scheme we adopted for our brand identity late last year.

—

Chocolate brown can get green, or worse red, if you aren’t careful. We think Benjamin Moore’s ‘Otter Brown’ (#2317-10) is great because it does neither. It is chocolate, pure and simple.

Pair it with Grant Beige and you’ll have a very sharp combination for sure. We’ve used this color inside a lot, but have also had great success with it as an exterior trim color. Colors often change a lot when transferred outdoors but Otter Brown looks great in either setting.

—

Paint color names can get a little ridiculous, so the simplicity of this one is hard to argue with…Benjamin Moore ‘Black’ (#2132-10)

Pure black is crisp and sophisticated, and this shade won’t get blue or green when combined with a bright accent. Use it with China White and you’ll have a classic combination that will never go out of style.

Benjamin: As I waited for her to answer the doorbell I thought about the events of the past year

Benjamin:

As I waited for her to answer the doorbell I thought about the events of the past year…

I was the luckiest man in the world. A beautiful, intelligent, caring woman just last night had proposed to me and I’d meant it when I said I never wanted to be without her. So why did I feel like such a bastard? Maybe that’s because I was. I had lied to the one woman who truly loved me and because of it had jeopardised everything I held dear.

It only happened once but once is enough. I suppose I’ll need to explain the events leading up to my monumental mistake:

A few months before I met Caitlin I had become friends with Ayesha and Madison. They introduced me to their room-mate Tori Kimura.

She was pretty and could be a lot of fun but she was also kind bit of a snob. But I’m no saint, we were both single and when she flirted with me I flirted back.

We became friends with benefits. As far as I as concerned that’s all we were and I thought she felt the same.

Then I met Caitlin and she made my world stop.

Looking back, I feel dreadful about my behaviour at Ayesha’s party that night. Caitlin had no idea what was going on between me and Tori. As far as I knew, no one did, though I think Madison might have suspected something was up. I knew Tori was beginning to have feelings for me and I went to the party that night to explain that I didn’t. But what I did instead was fall in love with another woman right in front of her, kiss another woman right in front of her, go to bed with another woman in her house. I am an idiot.

The guilt weighed heavily upon me and I tried to call Tori numerous times so I could apologise but she wouldn’t answer my calls. Until one night about a month ago. I’d just had a blazing row with Caitlin and was drowning my sorrows in Hogan’s. I called her, yet again, to apologise and this time she answered and said to come over. So like the drunken fool I was I actually went over there.

Tori met me outside. She looked all dolled up…and a little frantic. I begged her to forgive me right there on the sidewalk.

She accepted my apology and asked me if I’d like to go inside for a drink and like the idiot I am I accepted her offer.

The alcohol started flowing and I told Tori about my argument with Caitlin. She listened attentively and was very sympathetic. She really made me feel better about myself.

The next thing I know she was kissing me and I kissing her back…

…and then I did something I’d never thought I do: I cheated on Caitlin.

I felt disgusted with myself. I made my excuses to Tori, said I needed to go. Tori told me she still loved me and wouldn’t give up on “us”. I didn’t answer her, I just walked straight out. When I got back home I could barely look Caitlin in the eye. I do not deserve her.

Which brings me to the predicament I’m in now. I needed Tori to know it was a one time thing and that me and Caitlin were engaged. She deserved to be the first to know. I owed her that much.

The sound of the door opening pulled me out of my reverie. Tori silently held open the door and and I went inside.

I told her we were better off as friends and that the woman I truly loved was Caitlin who I was going to marry next week.

Tori was livid and I couldn’t really blame her. Then she dropped a bomb. With tears in her eyes she told me she was pregnant. The shock numbed me to my bones. Caitlin would never forgive me.

Through my research on MLMs and thought reform seminars (Large Group Awareness Training- LGAT) I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend of LGAT graduates starting up their own ‘boot camps’ aimed at marketing themselves as top network marketers helping you get leads and be better at network marketing for your MLM business… But only after revealing their ’secret of success’- going to an LGAT such as The Landmark Forum or Landmark Education trainings.

I refer to these thought reform groups, or LGATs as cult-like, cultic, money cults, and sometimes outright cults. Mainly because they use a one-size-fits all thought reform method of breaking you down then building you back up. And because there is the risk of severe psychological damage that can (and have) lead to lawsuits and suicides (< an ex-Forum member tells a story.) Besides Landmark, there are tons of them (unfortunately) thriving all over North America and other countries around the world. To keep this post simple I will only refer to Landmark, but I am certainly aware of many other groups based on Werner Erhard’s est “technology”, partially derived from Scientology, and will write more about those in another post. Or I just may altogether start a new blog devoted to LGATs.

Back to my point. The disturbing trend. It seems that Landmark has a program in its advanced course for students to set a goal of success. Design an ‘extraordinary life’ for themselves. Start something from nothing. Within all of that, they have already been programmed to share with the world the great ‘gift’ of ‘possibility’. Don’t keep the secret to yourself. Meaning, get everyone to ‘enroll’ with Landmark, but don’t tell them what actually happens during the ‘workshops’. These graduates don’t get a commission for recruiting anyone, that’s not Landmark’s goal. The goal is to transform and brainwash as many people as possible to go out and spread the word, all the while taking thousands of dollars from new enrollees. Members that don’t meet recruiting quota will remain a lower status on the LGAT totem pole, further encouraging them to spread their ‘happiness’ and ‘breakthroughs’ by posting YouTube videos and blogs talking about how they were already successful in life, but used to be angry, or defiant and now, thanks to Landmark Education, they have ‘freed’ themselves from that part of themselves (the emotional part?) and are now able to get whatever they want in life without getting in their own way.

So now some of them are out creating their extraordinary life by scamming people without a guilty conscience. Lovely.

> Want to see examples of these people at work?

******************************

The Fight Against Fraud in Canada

Is Canada Safe from Fraud? This is a reservation on most individuals minds who have either heard of or, have had first hand experiences with some kind of cheat.

Compared to most countries our record is reasonably decent. Though, the dilemma still threatens one and all at any particular occasion.

A recent investigation I conducted with family, associates and strangers showed that 72 percent of the people researched had extraordinarily little to no knowledge of most con games being played out on the public in the present day.

This included cyber fraud crimes as well as offline street scams and confidence games. This was shocking to say the least. It told me that the majority of the public are not educated and explained why so many individuals turn into sufferers of these schemes each and every day.

If only I could grab the community and tell them to wake up and smell the scam. It doesn’t just take place over seas and across the boarders, it’s in your own backyard waiting to come in and infect your life. Sadly, individuals would rather go around thinking they are in safe hands until it is too late. If only they knew that with just a little bit of familiarity they could be saving themselves from grave desolation.

The primary measure to conquering fraud schemes in Canada is awareness. By familiarizing yourself with the various kinds of hustles, your probability of stopping them grow exponentially. As well, the more you discover the safer you will be. This is for the reason that several of these con games work in the same way, making them simple to notice.

If you believe that keeping you and your loved ones safe and sound from fraud is vital, then take the time to do some research. Not only will you feel safer but, you will also have a newly developed confidence in that knowing is the largest part of the struggle when it comes to fraud prevention in Canada.

Meditations in James: 34 : Earthly Wisdom Jas 3:14-16 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish

Meditations in James: 34 : Earthly Wisdom

Jas 3:14-16 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

Deception is a strange thing. Here, for instance, is a ‘wise’ man. He is a business man. He spends all hours at work. He makes phone calls and he talks with his employees and he plans and schemes and makes profit. He is an ambitious man and he pushes out the boundaries of his company and takes over some smaller companies. He builds a new head office and people marvel at his business acumen. He builds bigger and bigger. He has a veritable empire. Along the way he sees his competitors and is envious of their activities. He plots and plans and schemes and takes them over, takes what he wants from their businesses (strips their assets) and then casts them aside. He holds big parties, he meets with the media, and he boasts of his great accomplishments. He laughs at the thought of God. He has three houses, a large yacht, a Lear jet, and homes abroad. He has everything, and then he dies. In death he finds himself standing before God and realises he is standing in tattered rags and that he has nothing. When asked what right has he to be there, he realises before the openness of God, that he has no answer, he has nothing. This story is exactly what Jesus described in his parable of the rich fool (Lk 12:15-21). He starts it with the words, “a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (v.15) and finishes it with, “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God” (v.21).

We might have thought the man in the story was a wise man, storing up material prosperity, but James thinks otherwise. Note each of the characteristics of this man as described: if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. These are the characteristics of the world. These are what the world accepts and even applauds. These are thing things the world expects from the great and the glorious. Listen next time when a great entrepreneur, or a pop star, or great politician is on TV. Listen to their words and observe the characteristics of them. They think they are wise because, after all, they have arrived haven’t they? But arrived where? At a place of spiritual poverty!

Observe James’ description of this sort of ‘wisdom’ that the world applauds: Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. This is not wisdom or the way that comes from God. This is actually not wisdom at all. True wisdom only comes from God. This ‘wisdom’ (which is no wisdom!) is earthly; it has its origins in the selfish, self-centred, godless minds of people who care nothing for God and are only concerned for themselves. They are unspiritual; there is a complete absence of anything spiritual in their lives. Their spirit is dead; there is no movement in respect of God. They are deaf to His words to them and their heart has no concern for Him. They are in fact energized and motivated by the devil. Now that is strong language you may think, but that is what James says – and so does John: “We know that …. the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” (1 Jn 5:19). If you do not surrender your life to God, then you are left in the hands of the Lord’s chastising angel, Satan, and he plays on the sinful desires in each unregenerate person, driving them onwards to bigger and better things with their ‘worldly wisdom’, and towards destruction. The richer they get, the poorer they get, but of course they don’t realize it until they stand before God with nothing.

Note also what James says accompanies this sort of ‘wisdom’: For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. Envy and selfish ambition are the driving forces of this so-called wisdom and wherever it is, when you look into what is going on, you find ‘disorder’. Disorder is confusion and upset like you have when there is anarchy. Here is this man working out his schemes and causing upset in other people’s lives and businesses. He is a law unto himself and he ploughs through other people’s lives and activities like a bulldozer, leaving havoc and mayhem in his wake. He causes upheaval on the earth. Moreover James speaks of every evil practice. The way this man thinks and works is evil. Evil just means it is utterly wrong.

Now you may have been reading all these descriptions and my story above, and have thought, “Well I’m glad I’m not like that!” Well perhaps you aren’t as big a person as the man of my illustration but, in all honesty, is your way of thinking somewhat similar to his? What genuinely motivates your life? Is it a genuine desire to please God, and to do things God’s way, or do you struggle and strive, thinking, planning, reasoning and working all hours to achieve material prosperity? Are you sometimes a little careless about moral integrity when you cut corners or don’t entirely speak the truth in business? You see you may not do it to the extent of the man above, but if you do it even a little bit, there are adjustments to be made according to James. Check it out. Be honest. What is your life like? Can you honestly stand before God and say you never operate with the ‘worldly wisdom’ we have been considering today? Ensure that you can!

This week in Visual Language we looked at the language of colour and how we perceive color.

We looked at how we get secondary and tertiary colours from primary colours, and how value, saturation and hue are associated with colour. We also looked at color schemes like monochromatic, complimentary, split complimentary, Triadic and Analogous. We learned how these schemes are created, how they work and the best way to apply them. Colour can be used to attract, create atmosphere, inform, structure, and teach.

We also looked at the work of Kandinsky and how he used colour to move the eye in different directions. We also learned that colours carry certain connotations. Black for example can represent

Darkness

Death

Despair

Dread

We also learned about perception and how the human eye works and the optical illusions can trick your eye into thinking that images are moving.

Apparently Blastoff can’t pay the Canadians, but they’re asking Canadian members to go ahead and grow their networks anyway, and they won’t be able to claim their own share of the cash-back rewards the down-lines bring in until the virtual cross-border shopping ‘glitch’ is sorted out with their lawyers which may take 3-6 months, says Blastoff… Apparently there is also some confusion as to whether or not Canadian members will be paid retroactively once it’s sorted (that is, if it’s ever sorted out).

So in the meantime, the Canadians are encouraged to hang in there, keep shopping, grow their networks, while Blastoff gets all the commissions and is admittedly unsure at this time whether or not the Canadians will be paid for all their efforts. (??)
