Scheveningen in teken van ijs

RTVWEST 29.11.09  -  DEN HAAG – Op het Palace plein in Scheveningen start zondag een ijssculpturenfestival.

Er staan sculpturen tot 9 meter hoog, tentoongesteld in een wit iglo-dorp op het plein bij het Kurhaus. De beelden staan in een iglodorp met een binnentemperatuur van min 10 graden. 

De ijssculpturen hebben als thema: ‘Èskoud duh Haag’, ofwel IJskoud Den Haag. Onder meer de Gevangenpoort, Panorama Mesdag en de Grote Kerk met Kerststal zijn in ijs uitgebeeld. 

Er is nog meer ijs in Scheveningen, want iedereen kan vanaf zondag ook schaatsen voor het Kurhaus hotel. Het ijsevenement duurt tot 10 januari.

vrijdag 27 november RTVWEST -  DEN HAAG – Op het Palaceplein in Scheveningen zijn Moskouse taferelen aan de gang. Er wordt de laatste hand gelegd aan de meer dan dertig ijssculpturen.

Bij een temperatuur van min dertien graden Celcius wordt er hard gewerkt aan de sculpturen. De skyline van Den Haag krijgt inmiddels al vorm. Ook de gevangenpoort en twee schilderijen van Escher zijn zo goed als af. 

Maar er moet nog wel flink door gewerkt worden, want zondagmiddag is de officiële opening van het ijssculpturenfestival. Tot 10 januari zijn alle ijsbeelden nog te zien op het Palaceplein in Scheveningen.

Eerste Hollandse Nieuwe op 8 juni

RTVWEST 22.11.09  DEN HAAG – Het Haringseizoen begint het komend jaar op 8 juni.

De vissector heeft gezamelijk de officiële startdatum bepaald. Op 8 juni start het haringseizoen met de traditionele veiling van het eerste vaatje Hollandse Nieuwe. 

Om voortijdige verkoop tegen te gaan heeft het productschap Vis op verzoek van de branche een Verordening Hollandse Nieuwe vastgelegd. 

Met deze verorderning kunnen handelaren die zich niet houden aan de officiële startdatum bestraft worden.

MeRy (de fotografe die op zoek is naar ongetrouwde modellen die in een trouwjurk willen poseren) heeft trouwens onlangs samen met Hans van Nuenen een spectaculaire Trash the Dress sessie georganiseerd op het strand bij Scheveningen, op 09-09-09 met meer dan 99 bruiden.

Ik vind het idee om na je bruiloft je trouwjurk (voor de meeste vrouwen de duurste jurk die ze ooit hebben aangeschaft) te gaan beschadigen alleen voor een paar foto een beetje verspilling, maar damn, er zitten wel echt spectaculaire foto’s tussen. Misschien moet ik toch niet zo benepen denken over het hele trash the dress fenomeen.

Maar toch, mijn 2ehands-kleding-hart breekt een beetje als ik bedenk dat bijvoorbeeld de eerste 3 jurken in de foto hieronder aan het einde van de dag vol ketchup, zand, taart en zeewater zaten…. Zulke schattige japponnen, verloren! Met een paar kleine wijzigingen zou ik ze zo dragen op mijn eigen bruiloft. Vooral de jurk die de voorste dame draagt: CUTE!!!

Dus, ik ben nog steeds een beetje verdeeld over trash-je-trouwjurk sessies, maar ik kan in ieder geval met zekerheid zeggen dat MeRy het geheel zeer goed op de foto kan zetten.

There’s a popular beach in the Netherlands called Scheveningen. And dollars to doughnuts if you don’t know Dutch you just read that word wrong. Well, the Dutch are nice, tolerant people. They won’t kill you for it.

Not now they won’t, anyway. Back in World War II they might have – they or the Americans or Brits. The story goes that if a person was trying to pass as Dutch but screwed up the pronunciation of this name, he was assumed to be a German spy, and shot. A little lifesaving phonemics, then: the opening sch is not like “sh” or even like “sk”; in Dutch, the s is [s] and the ch is like the ch in German ach (in the International Phonetic Alphabet this is written [x]). The ng does not have a hard [g] sound at the end of it, and, unlike in German, the v is [v], not [f]. As well, the final n is often dropped. And the accent is on the first syllable.

So why am I talking about Scheveningen when the word we’re tasting is shibboleth? Because Scheveningen was a shibboleth in the narrowest sense: a pronunciation test for group membership, failure of which could have fatal consequences. Here’s the original shibboleth story from the Bible, Judges 12:4–6, in the King James Version (I use it here because it was from this version that the word entered the language; otherwise I would use a translation that was more accurate to current English and more in tune with the scholarship that has happened in the last four centuries):

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites. And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.

My, my: a thin line between elocution and execution! Two voiceless fricatives, one alveolar, the other alveopalatal. Say one and then the other and you can see how close they are. If you think it should be obvious that the one is not the other, consider that Polish, for instance, has two sounds that pretty much both sound like “sh” to anglophones but are easily distinguishable to people who have been making and hearing them all their lives – as easily as we tell “s” from “sh”. But at least if you greet Ryszard or Kasia the wrong way they probably won’t kill you.

Failure to know in-group shibboleths can of course lead to a sort of social death, or exclusion anyway. If you say claret as “cla-ray” rather than “clair-it,” for instance, you may be seen by some oenophiles as a tyro or a poseur, a veritable Florence Bucket. In any in-group, if you don’t know this or that bit of vocabulary, well, you’re marked, possibly without even knowing it – and if you do use it correctly, then it can be your bona fides. Marketers and speechwriters like to use the term dog whistle refer to a phrase that seems unremarkable to most people but has a special reference or effect for a particular group; a dog whistle in this sense is also a shibboleth. And even a certain mode of dress or other distinguishing mark or behaviour – or idea to which one is expected to give allegiance – can, in the broader sense, be a shibboleth.

Does this word have a blunt, brutal sound to you, perhaps like clubbing someone in a cloth sack with a shillelagh? So much the better, since shibboleths can be used as blunt weapons of exclusion in many contexts. And if you think of sabbath, well, some of those exclusions are certainly religiously based. But think, too, of gibberish; many of them are grammatical – we do judge people by the language they use.

It works at different levels in different ways, too. For instance, while ain’t may put you out in the cold in one group, it may be part of a style of speech that proves your credibility in another group. And hypercorrections can play into this as well: some people will think that if you say “between you and me” or “take a picture of my friends and me,” you’re poorly educated. But move a level farther up in knowledge of English, and usage of “between you and I” and “take a picture of my friends and I” is a sure mark of an inferior user. And how often we seem so ready to press the “Smite” button on those who use “bad English”! I’m almost surprised this word didn’t get backformed into a verb when it could: I shibbol, thou shibbolest, he shibboleth. Meaning “test and smite,” I suppose.

By the way, since you’re probably wondering what shibboleth meant: “stream in flood.” It could also have meant “ear of corn,” but since the action took place at a ford, scholars reckon it was the watery sense. To my ears, the word happens to sound also like a rush (or splash) of water, or like walking through ears of corn. But, then, so does sibboleth.

Duizenden kinderen bij intocht Sinterklaas

RTVWEST 15.11.09 – DEN HAAG – Sinterklaas draaide zaterdag overuren, want de goedheiligman maakte in veel steden en dorpen zijn opwachting. Net aangekomen in Schiedam of hij moest alweer door naar bijvoorbeeld Scheveningen.

De goedheiligman zette zaterdagochtend onder meer in Scheveningen voet aan land. De Sint trok onder meer door de binnensteden van Den Haag, Gouda en Zoetermeer. In Leiden, Delft en Alphen aan den Rijn komt Sinterklaas pas volgende week op bezoek.

In Scheveningen waren onder de vele kinderen ook de drie prinsesjes Amalia, Alexia en Ariane met hun ouders.

Ballonnenactie

En al die kinderen die bij de intocht van de Sint een speciale Sint-ballon van Omroep West hebben gekregen, maken kans om Sinterklaas en Dieuwertje Blok in het echt te ontmoeten. De winnaar van die actie wordt uiterlijk 27 november bekendgemaakt.

RTVWEST 14.11.09 – DEN HAAG – Zaterdagavond mag iedereen weer voor de eerste keer zijn of haar schoen zetten, want Sinterklaas is aangekomen in Nederland.

De goedheiligman zette zaterdagochtend onder meer in Scheveningen voet aan land. De Sint trok onder meer door de binnensteden van Den Haag, Gouda en Zoetermeer. In Leiden, Delft en Alphen aan den Rijn komt Sinterklaas pas volgende week op bezoek.

RTVWEST 11.11.09 – DEN HAAG – Sinterklaas komt aanstaande zaterdag aan in de Scheveningse Haven. Dat heeft gevolgen voor het openbaar vervoer en de bereikbaarheid van de Haagse binnenstad.

Rond 12.30 uur vertrekt de Sint vanuit de haven voor een optocht naar de binnenstad. Op Radio West is de aankomst van de goedheiligman in de haven live te volgen.

De optocht eindigt rond 16.00 uur op het Rabijn Maarssenplein. Daardoor rijden de trams 1 en 17 en de bussen 21, 23 en 24 een andere route. Meer informatie over de duur van de omleidingen en de routes zijn te vinden op de website van de HTM.

De Sint arriveert zaterdag ook in Gouda en Zoetermeer. In Leiden, Delft en Alphen aan den Rijn komt Sinterklaas pas volgende week zaterdag 21 november aan.

La chambre de première instance III de la cour pénale internationale -CPI- a fixé au mardi 27 avril 2010 la date d’ouverture du procès dans l’affaire du congolais Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, accusé de crimes contre l’humanité commis en république centrafricaine entre 2002 et 2003.

Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo serait pénalement responsable, pour avoir effectivement agi en qualité de chef militaire, de deux crimes contre l’humanité pour meurtre et viol  et de trois crimes de guerre  à savoir meurtre, viol et pillage, prétendument commis sur le territoire de la république centrafricaine au cours de la période comprise approximativement entre le 26 octobre 2002 et le 15 mars 2003. Après son arrestation par les autorités belges, conformément à un mandat d’arrêt délivré par la chambre préliminaire de la CPI, il a été transféré à la cour le 3 juillet 2008. Il est actuellement détenu au quartier pénitentiaire de la CPI à Scheveningen, à La Haye.

Exclusief graf op duintop

AD 28.10.09  SCHEVENINGEN – Een laatste rustplaats bovenop een Scheveningse duintop. Het kost wat, maar dan heb je wel een exclusief graf.

Voor 18.000 euro koop je een plek op het ruim honderd graven tellende kerkhof  Ter Navolging. Voor het eerst in jaren is daar weer ruimte. En dan lig je niet tussen zomaar wat Nederlanders.
 
De 18de-eeuwse schrijfsters Betje Wolff en Aagje Deken werden er begraven. Ook het voorbeeld van premier Balkenende, staatsman Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer ligt er. Volgens bestuurslid Lenno Jol is dat het geld zeker waard.

PvdA Den Haag: geen cruiseterminal

RTVWEST 04.11.09 DEN HAAG – Na de VVD spreekt nu ook de PvdA in Den Haag zich uit tegen de aanleg van een cruiseterminal in Scheveningen. In het concept-verkiezingsprogramma staat dat de PvdA vindt dat de plannen voor een cruiseterminal niet meer aan de orde zijn.

In Den Haag is er nu geen partij meer voor de cruiseterminal, waardoor de aanleg ervan van de baan is. Het vrijgekomen geld voor het haalbaarheidsonderzoek naar de terminal wil wethouder Norder nu investeren in het bestrijden van de recessie. 

Verder staat in het PvdA-verkiezingsprogramma dat elke werkloze nuttig werk moet doen tot hij een nieuwe baan heeft gevonden, alle basisscholen krijgen een voorschool voor jonge kinderen met een taalachterstand en iedere Hagenaar moet Nederlands spreken. 

Ook wil de partij dat er over tien jaar geen verschillen meer zijn tussen krachtwijken andere wijken in de stad.

Norder: “Aanleg cruiseterminal van de baan”

 

31.10.09   DHFM 9200 – De aanleg van een cruiseterminal in Scheveningen is van de baan. Wethouder Marnix Norder zegt in het AD te stoppen met de onderzoeken naar de haalbaarheid nu een meerderheid in de Haagse gemeenteraad tegen de plannen is. 

Afgelopen week stemden de ledenvergadering van de VVD massaal voor het behoud van het Zuiderstrand. CDA, GroenLinks, D66, SP en de Haagse Stadspartij waren eerder al niet voor de bouw van de cruiseterminal en PvdA-lijsttrekker Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven zei op Den Haag FM eigenlijk wel gelukkig te zijn met het nieuwe VVD-standpunt. Ook twijfelde zij hardop over het nut van de door partijgenoot Norder gestarte onderzoeken.  

In het AD zegt Norder teleurgesteld te zijn, niet omdat de cruiseterminal er niet komt, maar omdat er nu nooit op basis van argumenten een weloverwogen besluit kan worden genomen.  Meer over dit onderwerp vanaf 14.00 uur in Sportsignaal op Den Haag FM.    

 

Raad wil onderzoek naar cruiseterminal stopzetten

RTVWest 29.10.09 DEN HAAG – Collegepartij VVD in Den Haag wil het onderzoek naar de aanleg van een cruiseterminal op Scheveningen stopzetten. Wel moet er gekeken worden of een zeezeilhaven haalbaar is.

 De meeste partijen in de gemeenteraad lijken zich achter dit standpunt te scharen. Dat is opmerkelijk omdat voor de zomer een meerderheid van de raad juist opdracht gaf tot het instellen van deze onderzoeken die 1,5 miljoen euro gaan kosten. Maar omdat de leden van de VVD zich woensdagavond uitspraken tegen een cruiseterminal, wil de partij van een deel van de onderzoeken af. 

De Haagse Stadspartij was altijd al tegen en wil dat alle onderzoeken worden gestopt. Fractievoorzitter Joris Wijsmuller gaat hier tijdens de begrotingsbehandeling begin november op aandringen.

RTVWest 28.10.09 DEN HAAG – De VVD in Den Haag is tegen de aanleg van een cruiseterminal op Scheveningen en woningbouw op het Zuiderstrand. Het zou de kust teveel aantasten.

Tijdens een vergadering van de partij bleek woensdagavond dat een grote meerderheid van de leden wilde dat het bestuur dit standpunt in het verkiezingsprogramma zou opnemen. De VVD ziet nu meer in een zeezeilhaven met recreatiemogelijkheden. 

Enkele maanden geleden stemde de VVD nog voor het uitvoeren van een haalbaarheidsonderzoek naar de cruiseterminal. Op basis daarvan wilde de partij een besluit nemen.

I just returned from The Hague, where the 2nd LIBER-EBLIDA Workshop on Digitisation of Library Material in Europe was held.

The previous workshop (which i didn’t attend) was in Copenhagen 2007 and this event seems to stabilize as a biennale. See Building the European Digital Library: calls for greater cooperation and Paul Ayris’ article LIBER-EBLIDA Digitisation Workshop in LIBER Quarterly vol 18 (2008) no 1. Personally i regret my failure to properly dig into the archives of LIBER Quarterly before the event. I spent the weekend in Netherlands’ surf-paradise (!!?) Scheveningen and might have as well invested more time reading available background material. On the other hand i was busy visiting Rotterdam, the museum of absolutely stunning M. C. Escher in Den Haag, hanging out with some local squatters before their demo, bumping most randomly to a finnish lad Joel i’ve met in Helsinki a few times and also visiting the public library of The Hague (blogged some observations in finnish).

The LIBER+EBLIDA event itself was most interesting, though i must say i wished for some more dynamic methods of workshopping. In Copenhagen LIBER composed a suite of recommendations and they were revised in The Hague and will be available in the near future. This was the workshopping-part. Most of the time was spent on information dissemination (read: sitting and listening to powerpoint presentations).

Most of the discussion around digitalisation is rather slow, not an awful a lot of happens in a few years time and topics come and go. Personally i think Google and other commercial players bring very welcome dynamics to the arena. We did get to see some implementations too, not just reminders on “how we should convince politicians that the digitalisation project is of utmost importance and should be funded with public money”. Well, that was repeated quite a few times.

In general the topics were what you’d except; digitalisation, orphan works, Europeana, metadata standards, identifiers, several cases of digitalisation and online publishing materials, funding, open access, some healthy grudge against Google digitalisation efforts and the unresolved problems of intellectual property rights and copyright.

Some of my favourite topics were the LIFE tool for evaluating the cost of digital objects over their lifetime, URN-identifiers and the apparent importance of Europeana as a cooperation project in Europe.

When participants know each other and the subject very well the atmosphere is relaxed and warm, and this was the case (in my opinion anyhow) in The Hague too.

A few people were on Twitter with hashtag #liber but because Twitter is annoying and unpersistant and we didn’t use a more unique tag, that URL will be useless very soon. Nothing particular happened on Twitter, but some of the tweets of interest were read aloud at the venue. I would assume the presentation graphics will be available through the LIBER website, and perhaps audio recordings will be published. Keep an eye on LIBER Quarterly also.
