Nabokov Collection to projekt Jana Galla, czyli 21 zaczarowanych pudełek promujących bibliotekę Vladimira Nabokova. Każde pudełko, wykonane przez innego projektanta, nawiązuje do znanej pasji pisarza, czyli do słynnego kolekcjonowania motyli. W przestronnym “boxie” odnajdziemy kawałek papieru, szpilki, wycinanki, kolorowe paciorki, itp. Kompozycje imitują przybite szpilkami owady. Mają na celu przedstawienie treści danej książki, uwydatnienie jej sensu i zachęcenie czytelników do częstszej lektury. W pudłach odnaleźć można ciekawą grę kompozycyjną różnych faktur, zabawę przestrzenią i kolorem.

Jan Gall jest dyrektorem artystycznym Vintage Anchor Books, instruktorem w School of Visual Arts, a obecnie zasiada w zarządzie AIGA / NY.

you know them. one of them sits on your right shoulder, always urging you to do the right thing.

you know them. one of them sits on your right shoulder, always urging you to do the right thing. ” eat less! exercise more! help that old lady across the street”. you know he’s right, so you try to abide by what that angel says, but it’s really difficult because a lot of the time, you just can’t hear him. why can’t you hear him? because on your left shoulder sits his evil counterpart. in latin, left is translated to sinestre or sinister….for a very good reason. you know the other one even better, correct? he’s sittin’ up there playing his vintage pre-cbs strat (unfiltered camel cigarette tucked between the strings, a colt 45 (the malt liquor and as well as the gun) close by his heavily muscled and tattooed black leather clad arm) with the amp cranked up to 12! when he wants to get your attention, he does so right away. the funny thing is, that during different stages in life, this angel may appear differently to you. as an freshman in college, away from the prying eyes of his parents for the first time, the angel may appear as the evil biker. later in life, perhaps while on a road trip as a sales rep, after a drink or 2 in a hotel, the angel may appear as a seductive female. you know this angel by the philosophy they promote. back in the day it used to be ” wine, women and song”. nowadays, it’s ” sex and drugs and rock and roll!”. these are what they tempt you with to try and get you to make the wrong choices in life, and they are important choices, but it’s the little things that really get under your skin.

new york has a summer program that gives tennis lessons in and around city parks for a very nominal fee. ana and i signed up for one of these courses in crocheron park, bayside, queens a while back. when we arrived for our tennis lesson, there were about 40 prospective roger federers and serena williamses. when we noticed that there were only 2 instructors, it struck us quite clearly that it was not going to be one of those one on one, touchy, feely kinds of instruction. the first thing they tell you is “i’m going to hit some balls to you. you return them so i can check out your swing”. we did as instructed, then came over the net to hear the instructor’s analysis. we were ( individually) told that our swings were very good, but there was a bit of room for improvement; at which point we started feeling pretty good about ourselves . then they started a very lengthy list that would have (and should have) caused anyone with even a lick of common sense to give up the game then and there. evidently they told the same thing to just about everybody who attended that day. that could have been because we all sucked uniformly, or it could have been because they we were getting exactly what we paid for….which wasn’t much.

while playing tennis (or especially golf), the angels accompany you wherever you go. the two things to remember while playing tennis are “bend your knees” and “follow through”. the good angel dutifully says this as each ball is hit towards you. you, of course, cannot hear him, because ole badass is yelling in your left ear at the top of his lungs “kill it! kill the ball!” who do you think you’re going to hear? that is why 9 times out of 10, the ball either hits the net or goes over the fence.

while playing golf, it gets even worse. “keep your head down” is the mantra repeated over and over by the good angel. “you paid a fortune for those golf balls. you better watch and see where they go” shouts the evil angel. so, just having emptied the local atm for a new box of titleist golf balls guaranteed to fly further and straighter than ever, watch them you do. as you begin your downstroke, you pick up your head so you can watch to see where the ball goes. you watch the ball as it slices to the right and lands in a water hazard. you watch the ball as it hooks to the left and nearly kills a guy on the adjacent fairway. you watch the ball as it dribbles a few feet away from the tee. as you bend to pick the ball up, muttering something about a mulligan, you can hear the evil angel snickering. you swear you are not going to do it on the next shot, you try to listen to the good angel, but with all that yelling, it doesn’t help. you keep on doing it again and again. the only time you do not pick up your head is the drive off the 18th tee. by this time, the evil angel is at the 19th hole, because his work is done for the day. he is already working on his 4th shot of tequila. the result…a beautiful straight 250 yard drive down the middle of the fairway. the evil angel sees this shot, nods to himself and then laughs out loud. he laughs, because he knows how close you were to just giving up the whole damn sport and picking up stamp collecting, or just about any other hobby that is less frustrating. but, oh, that last drive. that last drive will keep you coming back for more punishment every single time.

one of then advantages of being a resident of new york city is that you can take advantage of the wonderful city golf courses. for a nominal greens fee, you can call in a tee time, just like the fancy country clubs. the least expensive way to play is to schlep your own clubs. this will provide a modicum of exercise, so at least there will be a physiological, as well as a psychological reason for your high blood pressure. cart rental is inexpensive as well, so if you are going to flagellate yourself every time you play, you can at least do it at your convenience without a side trip to the poorhouse. douglaston golf course, in queens, has been my favorite. it is very scenic, with many hills and valleys. i used to take the kids to play there after they had taken golf lessons for a while.

” they have a great swing and show a lot of potential; they just have to make one or 2 minor changes”. then the children’s golf instructor rattles off the same 6 page list of changes that they want your kid to accomplish as the adult tennis instructor in crocheron park. they must have a script.

on one such outing, philip, my younger son, who had never hit a ball further than about a hundred yards, was at the tee for the 5th hole. this tee sits high on a hill, with a water hazard both in front of and behind the green, which is located far below. there was a foursome on the green and the hole was about 140 yards, so i did not see any problem with philip hitting before they got off the green. i doubted that he would even reach the nearer of the water hazards. of course, at this point, after 4 or 5 beers, the evil angel has fallen off philip’s shoulder, and stumbles off into the woods to relieve himself (but not before talking the girl who sells candy to give him her phone number), so philip can hear the good angel, who evidently is so excited about being heard for the first time all day, he does not notice the four guys on the green. philip rears back, hits a 125 yard screamer, which bounces and hits one of the guys in the side. since his head was down, philip doesn’t see the trajectory of the ball at first, but since the ball flies straight and true, he picks it up in mid flight as it zeros in on the hapless guy on the green. just as he realizes that this is the single greatest shot he has ever hit in his entire young life, the guy on the green screams and the ball bounces off him to land a couple of feet from the cup. philip is jumping up and down now with the prospect of his first eagle (2 under par) when another member of the foursome picks up philip’s ball and throws it into the water hazard. philip sees this and drops to the ground like he was poleaxed. he has never been fond of golf since that incident.

it is a rare day when you can actually satisfy both the good and the evil angel. we had the opportunity to do this recently. we had visitors from mexico, our friend, midori and 2 of her kids, carlos and marcela. i thought her name was marcela, i always knew her as marcela, i always called her marcela and she always responded to marcela. her name, it turns out however, is not marcela. i found this out this past week. she is a beginning freshman at the school for visual arts in manhattan. i was supposed to go into the city, pick the 3 of them up and bring them to our house for dinner. i am supposed to pick them up at the freshman dorm, an old hotel called the george washington. ana has told me to just go to security in the lobby, ask them to call her room on the intercom and they will come down and meet me. whenever ana sends me on one of these seemingly simple tasks, there is always some tiny bit of vital information missing. this was the case. security in sva is a desk, a guy and a list. the list of students is organized according to first names, not last names. there is no computer. there is no intercom. i arrive on time at 5:00 pm and walk into the lobby. as i am a bit older than most of the freshman, the security guy immediately perks up when he sees me, thinking he is about to save some hapless freshman from a dangerous pederast. when i ask him if he can help me locate a student, he immediately pulls out “the list”. i give marcela’s first and last names and am immediately told that there is no such student in the school for visual arts. i ask him again and again to check (which he does, as he seems quite helpful), all to no avail. i call ana, who swears to me that she had arranged a meeting with midori for this evening. i ask if she wants me to come home, she says “no, try again”. and so i do . again. and again. by now it’s closing on six o’clock and still no sign of the mexicans. i then ask if there are any students with the last name of ochoa (midori’s married surname). after a very lengthy perusal of the entire list, i am told there is 1 student in the whole school named ochoa (on the first page), but that the student’s first name is alicia, not marcela. i then ask if someone from security can actually go up to the room of that particular student just to see if there is anyone there. i am told that someone will go up, but it will take a while. since 5 o’clock, ana and i have been frantically calling carlos to see if we can find them to no avail. after a while the guard tells me that someone has gone up to the room of the student named alicia ochoa and reports that there was nobody in the room. i am finally about to leave for home when the elevator opens and midori, carlos and alicia marcela ochoa step out. carlos’ phone had not been getting a signal in the old, steel reinforced concrete walls of the george wahington hotel. on the way back to our house, carlos got all 19 voice and text messages we had sent. that is why we have verizon, not at&t.

midori’s son, carlos, came to new york city a couple of years ago as a freshman student in the school of visual arts. he was in the process of looking for a place to live when we received a call from midori. she asked us to be the guarantor of the rent for the apartment that carlos had found. we were warned in advance that the apartment was “on the small side”, but we were not prepared for what we saw when we showed up to see it in person. evidently, what the landlord of this firetrap had done was to literally split a studio apartment in half. the result was 300 square feet of “living ” space divided among 3 students. 2 female, 1 male. a bathroom with a 1 foot by 2 foot window facing an airshaft was the only ventilation in the place. carlos’ “bedroom” was actually the closet of the original apartment. the kitchen, living room and bedroom for the two girls was the rest of the “apartment”. how small was it? i went to see it with toby, my older son, carlos, ana and my mother in law. the problem was that if we all went into the apartment at the same time (with the other 2 roommates) the first person in had to be the last person out because there was not enough room to get around the other people who came in after you.

anyway, we were going to dinner with midori, her 2 kids, ana, my mother in law and myself. kosher meals are a necessity when dining with my mother in law, so we have done our homework when it comes to kosher cuisine in the city. one of our favorites is pongal, on lexington avenue, between 26 th and 27th streets. the nice thing about “curry hill” is that there are tons of indian restaurants located in a very small geographic area (hence its name). the odd thing is that you can have 6 restaurants on a block with similar menus and food, but there will be only one of them that has tons of people, the others will be completely empty. pongal is the crowded one. we love the samosas, soup and whatever entree they offer. the main complaint about the place is that you cannot get ice in your water. if you ask for ice, (and you always have to ask at least twice) they give a plate with 6 cubes on it. you will not get any more until you ask again (and again). atmosphere is non existent, as the plates and “glasses” are in the style of “early alcatraz”. everything is made of stainless steel. there is never a problem of breakage in this place. the food, however, makes up for the (lack of) ambience. what with the kosher, vegetarian food, the good angel was sitting pretty and i do believe he was even starting to feel a little smug. the evil angel (who to that point had been absent…..i have no idea what he had been doing but his eyes looked kind of glassy when he finally showed up just as we finished eating). “dessert, anyone”? he asked “i know just the place”. “we can even walk there from here”. as i mentally calculated the odds of him having gone rogue, he sidled up next to my ear and whispered “shake shack!” i have extolled the virtues of this gift from the culinary gods before, but this would be a challenge. we had eaten vegetarian for dinner, so the “b line” at the shake shack in madison square park was just the ticket. if you want hot food at shake shack, especially at dinner time, you are going to have to wait for quite a while, as the line tends to run about a half hour. we, however, having already eaten were just there for dessert, so the “b line” it was . this is only for cold food, like the 80 gazillion calorie “concrete” my buddy lucifer was pushing on me. i took solace in the fact that i was able to share it with family and friends, and so both angels were happy on the ride home.

Why SVA? I’m tired of people not knowing a damn thing about my university. Now that I have been home for summer, I’m shocked at the amount of people that think I’ve been attending MICA or NYU. NYU? Hah, I wish. NYboo! SO I’m just going to vent..now.

1. MICA was an option..but really? How fucking predictable, I grew up in Baltimore..why not go to school in Baltimore? Yikes! Also, you had to take drawing classes, and it seemed like a more traditional school which I have utter respect for but I’m not traditional. I wish I could draw beautiful masterpieces, but I can’t–so why dick around?

2. PRATT- I visited the Pratt campus and while I am insanely jealous that they actually have green grass campuses, (compared to SVA’s smog and concrete environment) my major turn off was this:::the photo building is dark and dingy and under the gymnasium!!! The photography program there is like an afterthought. Also, it’s not like professors who teach at Pratt won’t venture across the bridge and teach at SVA, they share! Allegedly Brooklyn is the “new” Manhattan but only people living in Brooklyn are saying that.

3. Corcoran- In one word? “Yawn”

NOW WHY SVA? aka SVyay!

It’s not perfect, socially anyway. Yes, people are known to either hibernate in dorms or get lost in the nightlife..and the majority of students aren’t the typical pretentious art hipsters…which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. It’s obviously good because who wants to be surrounded by snobbish art fucks? Although, it’s painful how some of the students (in my classes anyway) didn’t know much about art or grande artists. But they learn fast, and that’s what college is for. I’m just thankful for my roots.

School of Visual Arts may not be the most well-known (or have the most memorable name, I think it should be like..MIA Manhattan Institute of Art) but the photo program is an entire building, seven floors dedicated to photography. Plus, the major deciding factor is the fact that you are right in the middle of NYC! So, you are surrounded by the top museums and rich culture and big names! When you are a senior you are hooked up with a legit artist to learn from! If your professor isn’t majorly famous then most likely they know someone famous! Internships! Am I wrong? A dreamer maybe.. but it just seems most logical for the long term. My freshman year, one of my instructors was the photo editor for PDN, another practically had Leibovitz on speed dial. Plus, Gregory Crewdson was a judge in the freshman show! James Franco came to do a Q&A. That’s only a few things… I mean yes it is an intense environment I’ve definitely had a few breakdowns (one on W18th St. & Broadway FYI) but I think that is the most effective way to do things..I wouldn’t want to be cradled during my college experience. I need to be pushed.

SO THERE. x

Having no engineering background or product design experience, this task seemed daunting to say the least. Allan introduced us to some fabulous people to educate us on the needs within the prosthetics community: Author of The Hand, Frank Wilson; Iraq war veteran amputee, Jon Kuniholm; and athlete, model, actress, simply amazing person, Aimee Mullins.

The ten week project was nothing short of challenging, and the results can be seen here: The Prosthetics Project
Lately the project has been garnering a lot of press. Read what others have to say about it!

Peter Kuper
(Summit – New Jersey, 22 settembre 1958)

A Journal of Travels Through Africa and Southeast Asia.

Collabora inoltre regolarmente con Time, Newsweek, The New York Times come illustratore.

La sua produzione di graphic novel è piuttosto ampia, in particolare oltre a Stripped – An Unauthorized Autobiography, Mind’s Eye, The System, si è cimentato anche con la versione grafica dei racconti di Kafka dal titolo Give It Up! (tr. it. Lascia stare!E altri racconti brevi, Hazard) ma anche del capolavoro kafkiano The Metamorphosis (tr. it. La metamorfosi, Guanda 2008), oltre all’adattamento di The Jungle di Upton Sinclair (tr. it.

A little Zappa and coffee to welcome the afternoon, and give me the jolt I need. Waka Jawaka, is on the Shindo 301 player system now, spinning away. ’Big Swifty’, on side one, is a juggernaut that doesn’t let up until the last note trails off. It is a touch under 18 minutes of thick, brass tinged jazz fusion and is full of expressive, rolling, vivid playing to awaken the senses. It will give your hifi a nice workout, for sure. Waka Jawaka was released in ‘72, a few years after Zappa’s popular Hot Rats album, which has been recently re-released by Classic Records on vinyl. Of course, you could do what I do, and scope out a sweet original.

Coincidently, the album artwork for this record was illustrated by Marvin Mattelson, who was my illustration instructor at School of Visual arts (class of ‘93). From what I recall, Marvin was a big Zappa fan and was ecstatic when Frank asked him to do the cover for Waka Jawaka. Marvin went on to do some major Advertising Campaign Illustrations, such as Plug Head, for MTV. He also painted the album artwork for Chant, which went triple platinum.

Marvin was extremely inspirational to me when I was doing time in art school, as well as after graduation, when I was a Free-Lance Illustrator, painting realistic illustrations for New York City book publishers. Listening to vintage WNEW-FM crackle through the airwaves, late at night, kept me going during those long, cold, morning hours finishing art commissions to meet the deadline the following day.

That was another chapter in my life, a natural progression having taking over from there, slowly morphing into my current profession. I do still keep busy in the arts, painting and enjoying photography. I tend to think of what I do now, is align my design and artistic sensibilities with my love of music (and of course, the gear that produces it) together, through my company, Pitch Perfect Audio. By the way, Marvin Mattelson is still busy in the art world, painting superb portraits. I sell the best audio equipment in the world. I’m happy.
