What a way to end the year! We had to send aerial perspectives of our building design to our profess

What a way to end the year! We had to send aerial perspectives of our building design to our professor through e-mail. Since a classmate told me that some of our classmates would not be submitting anything, I thought of doing the same. But I didn’t want to be behind schedule any further (because I already am), so I worked on the 3D model all day today, despite my novice skills in using Autocad and Sketchup. I worked on revising some parts of my newest (and hopefully final) design, which included the main staircase, the AHU room, and the washroom. All three spaces had to be crammed in such a small space, so I ended up making an oddly-oriented staircase with open risers. Not precisely child-friendly stairs, but I’ve seen other stair designs that are even less child-friendly than mine. haha.

Anyway, I tried to do the 3D model in Autocad, since I can simply extrude the polylines I made based on my CADD plans. Then I realized how late it was, just ten minutes before 12 midnight. For some reason, my mind thought of finishing up the model and submitting photos of it to my professor, no matter how ugly it looked. I did some sketching earlier in the evening, making possible designs for the elevations, but I ended up not doing the design for the model. For one, I knew doing my hand-drawn designs would take a lot of time, so I opted to submit a simple massing of the structure. I still feel a bit dissatisfied with my current design, especially with the roof plan, but I’m still working on it. Three minutes left ’till midnight, I managed to send six photos to my professor, all but one being aerial/exterior perspectives. I submitted one interior, showing the atrium–it’s the first interior perspective I did, and it looks a bit interesting. I hope my computer skills and finished model can do justice to the ideas I have in my head. XD

The entire schooling population is taking a two week hiatus, school holidays are here again and alon

The entire schooling population is taking a two week hiatus, school holidays are here again and along with them, some of us are counting down the days until school resumes. It is going to be so cool when all these guys come back from their countries and tell some funny stories about what happened to them and how they spent their Christmas and everything. I love to stay at the Academy during the holidays (I mean, hellooooo, who the hell wants to freeze his ass off in his home country, when he can have sunshine all day) but I find that I need to have a number of activities organized to keep myself sane and happy. I mean, have you ever realized that you want something so badly and then when you finally have it, you have no clue what to do with it? It is pretty much the same with the Christmas break – we have been waiting and waiting and … … … Don’t even get me started. Anyways, here are some of the things that I planned to do this school holidays:

1) Head to the cinema and watch ‘avatar’ directed by James Cameron (So done; was happy I did it – good movie without a story; almost two hours long and still not boring, great job)

2) Pack my stuff and spend a day at the beach, weather permitting (Screw that, the weather was so freaking good almost all the time, that I hardly found time to do something else than relaxing at the beach. Surf, sand and sun are just so much fun.)

3) Since Shopping is a central part of the whole experience of Dubai, I spent some time (okay shitloads of time) at the mall, take advantage of the incredible tax-free prices in the shops (my closet is full now with stuff I don’t actually need. I just wait till all the girls come back and then I open a flea market in my room – I am gonna be so damn rich).

4) Spend the rest of my time studying (assignments). This is the dullest part of all but, what can I say, that is the actual reason that I am here for.

So… probably that’s all for my holidays. Okay, my girlfriend came over for a couple of days and I was very happy to have her here in Dubai. I tried to show her everything (especially the mall – you know how some girls are – shopping is a drug for some of them), but it was almost impossible because I had plenty of other stuff to do. We made the best of it.

Before I finally shut up, I just want to add one thing: Who the hell is so stupid as to work voluntarily on New Year’s Eve? I mean, everyone will be out partying and having the best time of their lives and I will be working… … … At least I am not the only idiot, am I right Manny?

I love the prodigal son story. God always ends up speaking to me through this story. These days, I a

I love the prodigal son story. God always ends up speaking to me through this story. These days, I am taking an extended Sabbath, a time of rest and renewal. I noticed over this past year I have been addicted to work. It’s a deadly addiction that I have acquired over the years. There were times at work as if I am driving a broken car at its full speed. I am trying to run out of gas to prove to God that I am burnt out for the Kingdom then he will allow me to stop. Instead of taking care of my own spiritual needs and brokenness, I numb these unspoken pain and hurt in my heart through work. Just as long the adrenaline is your blood, the high is still there. Most people know exactly what I am talking about.

These days, I have nothing to do. I feel useless. I ask God stupid questions that came straight from my heart, like “Do you love the unbelievers and the kids in East Asia more than me?” That’s a stupid question, a stupid question that the older brother asked when his father welcomed his prodigal brother back home. Instead of standing beside his father waiting for his prodigal brother to come back home, the church, including myself, is often the one barrier that prevents seekers to truly understand the grace of God. We act as if we have the right to initiate other new believers through judging their life styles, but the truth is we are not happy with the past sacrifices we had to make so we force these sacrifices onto others. The bottom line is most Christians don’t even know that they are loved by God unconditionally.

The East Asian societies with their mad work ethics need grace, need freedom, need time to pause and ponder about life without deadlines. I need to learn to live a life to the fullest without addictions to work, without deriving cheap joy from circumstances but real joy from delighting in the Lord.

“Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4

I am loved. I am biting my tongue on this one, but it’s the truth. I am loved NOT because I speak mandarin and I am a physical therapy student and I have a heart for the lost!!!!!

I am loved because I am His precious princess.

Funnies:
My roommate Tamryn has stolen the clown role that I have always enjoyed playing and I will forgive her for that.

High school tech class:
Presentation time:
Me: super hyper to present our video to the class, yet cannot get the VCR to cooperate with me. 1 min later, I am in tears and I want my mommy. My project partner finally gets up from his seat causally and says, “carol, the tape is not in the VCR.”
GEEZ, THANKS for the help!

Look how skillful Tam has stolen my role, that sneaky little girl =P
The first day she came to visit my place before deciding to move to Kingston.
Me: Look out the window, it’s beautiful we get to see sunset and sunrise from here!
a person with a brain and a straight face: you can’t see both.
Me: oh, maybe just sunrise? =P
5 min later after we have moved onto two other conversations…
Tam: you are so silly carol, you can’t see both.
Seriously, Tam, seriously.

Hence the reason, I have long given up sorting out bills and tips at restaurants, because it’s more irritating than funny to my friends as I make a fool of myself. You know it’s mostly to entertain people. =) That and I need a calculator to do math.

After working on my demo reel I found that I still needed to hone my skills. I worked really hard on my demo but the end result is not really what expected at all and so I’m planning on moving forward. I have always been a big fan of the Megaman series especially the Megaman Zero games. My next demo is inspired by a video I saw on Youtube which combined the Pre-ending cut-scene with the voices provided by the Megaman zero drama cd tracks ( I think they’re called the ex tracks). I am planning to replicate this dramatic ending and certainly try to show more animation skills. So far I have created This Leica reel:

If you are curious about the youtube video that inspired this it’s here:

I thank Capcom and redmaverick 2312 for the inspiration and with this I will push forward.

One of my favorite pieces in the MoMA is this drawer set by Shiro Kuramata.

When I first saw it, I spent some time trying to figure out this weird grid system. Each drawer shape is unique, and some of them are repeated… i.e. the drawer on the top right corner and the bottom left corner are the same, but 90 degrees rotated. This could easily be one of the most boring things in the world, but I was so amazed by the simplicity and organization of it all.

Last semester, we were asked to design a bitmap alphabet for type 1. Of course I had to indulge myself and try using this drawer set grid. Kuramata’s drawers are 7 x 7, but I ended up expanding it to 13 x 13 to make enough room for the widest letter “m.”

The result was ok.. I think a tad more conceptual than usable, which I was ok with. I wish some letters could have been cleaner, but I had a strict system (starting point for each letter, how curves travel on the grid, serifs) that I refused to stray away from… with the exception of “x.”

These are my issues…. This is my world issue. An end to slavery. As you probably know, slavery

These are my issues….

This is my world issue.

An end to slavery.

As you probably know, slavery is when you put a price on a life. It’s when you buy a human, and then force that human to work. Or effectively whatever you want them to do.
In fact, today, right now, twenty seven million people are in slavery. Unfortunately, their stories are kept well hidden from the general public.

Every human is human. Every person should have equal rights. What would you do if you were stuck as a ’slave’ right now? Would you feel angry? Anger at who? Your ‘master’? The government, for not stopping slavery? Now imagine almost twenty seven people around the world, feeling that right this instant. What will you do?

Think about those twenty seven million people for a second. In 1860, a slave census was taken in some part of the united states. The person with the highest number of slaves was 1,130. In 1860. With the huge population growth, think about how high that number would be now. Hmmm. In fact, there are more slaves now, then at any other time in recorded history. Once again, probably because of the massively growing population.
Still, you would think that with our ‘civilized’ world, slavery would be non-existent. Sadly not true. In nearly every country, slavery is abolished. In every country, it’s still being practiced. At least we tried, right?

What would actually happen is slavery ended? Every rich person would have to do their own work. They would have to get off of their high horsey-hay-stack-thing and actually do something. That would mean a decline in world happiness, but nothing major that I can see.

The very first reliable recorded incident of slavery is from the 1500’s. In the land that we now call Canada, a Portuguese explorer called Gaspar Corte-Real sailed here, and took 50 Indian men and woman slavery. In Newfoundland.
There was probably slavery in Ancient Egypt. All of those rich people couldn’t be expected to hump all of their stuff around, right?
Ancient Greece and Rome? Think Coloseums and pillar-y temples.

Slavery seems to be an ancient world tradition. Why stop now? Now we can see that woman are as equal as men. We now know that everyone is equal. If we know all of these things, why are we still clinging to slavery?

Slavery is my wish for the world this Christmas season, because it’s just wrong. I hate even the idea of slavery, ever since I read the Chronicles of Narnia, and it talked about slavery. They used the talking horses to do work for them. I hated the idea of those proud beasts being forced to do things like that.

End slavery. Spend this Christmas in relative peace.

Things that seem so negative in our lives . . . difficult and trying circumstances . . . can prove to be the best thing ever for me. In the turbulence, by the grace of God, I am drawn closer to the God I claim to be my most important priority, yet seems to fade to the background way more often than I care to admit.

Justin had an ACLS test, a practical test, that he failed at the end of the term . . . threatening to take him out of the Paramedic program. We didn’t understand it . . . Justin is getting A’s in the rest of the course and one test came so close to taking him out.

Instead of kicking him out, which the teachers had a right to do, they sent him to an extra 2 day course in Portland to learn more (though Justin felt he had a good grip on it) and take PCC’s test regarding. He passed it with flying colors. But the class ended up being great and Justin felt very well worth the trip and extra money spent to taking it.

He still has to take and pass CCC’s ACLS test, which is the first Wednesday in the new term, January.

In the giant swells that seemed to rise out of nowhere in the sea of our life . . . God grabbed our hand, held us up; reminding us again Who God is. Also humbling us and bringing to light that life is more than what is happening in the here and now but our relationship with HIM is the most important.

Yeah, we have to live life and do our best, but ultimately God is in control and so very interested in our hearts, personally and passionately! And it really isn’t worth living if He isn’t in the foreground . . . the focus and desire of our heart . . . child-like trust and faith in His ability and the fact HE is everything, everything that we ever need!

We are coming up on Christmas and, again, I feel like we are blessed beyond what we deserve. A gorgeous tree stands in the corner, chopped down by the resident wanna-be lumberjack, lit to colored glory. The intoxicating scent of pine brings with it an earthy joy that really spells Christmas. Stockings hang nearby on the wall . . . deep red velvet, thanks to my mom-n-law’s creative skill . . . the boy’s bulky with small surprises.

Our house is dark a lot these days. Apparently the lit Christmas tree is much brighter when all the lights of the house are turned off; Sam has deemed himself the official light switch coordinator.

My entire family is getting together at my sister, Kelli’s, house this Christmas . . . we might have to carpool in so we don’t take the entire street to park our cars.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!! What a day to look forward to! And its only one week away!

All these thoughts of Christmas . . . ultimately, I am grateful for my Savior’s mercy and grace; the ability to be with family and share the goodness of God together!

Blessings on your holiday!

During my visit to Chisetsu Elementary School to class 1-4, we played a lot of games. All the games

During my visit to Chisetsu Elementary School to class 1-4, we played a lot of games. All the games we played were traditional Japanese games. These are the games I played with the children at Chisetsu Elementary School.

The first game was the game of putting one of our palm on our fist. There was a song for that game and when the song was sung, we had to, for example, put our right palm below our left fist, and then move our right palm above our left fist. After that we had to change the role of our hands by putting our left palm below our right fist and then move it above our right fist. The movement was repeated until the song ended. When the song ended, we could be called successful if we had our palm on our fist, not below our fist.

The second game was played by two persons. Two persons held each others hands face to face, and then a song was sung. At a certain part of the song, the holding-hands-pairs had to turn their body so that they would be back to back with each other while holding hands. The song continued and at the end of the song, the pairs should turn their body back so that they would face each other again. The game would be said as successful if the two holding hands persons had their hands not crossed when they faced each other again.

The third game was the game of making ugly face. Two participants had to compete with each other to make ugly face and try to make the opponent laugh. The one who laughed first would be the loser. In this game, the teacher asked who wanted to compete with me and all the children raised their hands. So three representatives was chosen to compete making ugly faces with me. The children were great because no matter how I tried, they did not laugh at all. So in the end the result were all draw. I didn’t see what kind of faces I had made, but I guess it must be very very ugly. I don’t care anyway, it was just for having some fun with children. The children even called me Shinigami (死神) which means death god. I don’t know why they called me that, maybe it was because I didn’t lose in even one match or maybe the faces I made was very ugly. But I think maybe the reason was the first one, the 死神 in Bleach is not ugly after all.

The fourth game we played was Kagome Kagome (かごめかごめ). In this game, one child was chosen as the oni sitting and closing his eyes. The other children held hands and made a circle around the oni. While the song was sung, the circle of children moved around the oni and after the song stopped, the child right behind the oni had to make an animal voice. The oni then had to guess who that person behind him was. If the oni guessed it correctly, the person behind the oni had to replace the child in the center to become the oni. This is the song sung during this game:

かごめかごめ 篭の中の鳥は

Kagome Kagome, Kago no naka no Tori wa

いついつ出やる　夜明けの晩に

Itsu Itsu deyaru? Yoake no ban ni

鶴と亀が滑った

Tsuru to kame ga subetta.

後ろの正面だあれ。

Ushiro no shoumen daare ?

The fifth game we played was Hana Ichi Monme (花一匁). In this game, the children were divided into two groups and they holds hands and faced each other in two lines. This game also used a song during the game. One group stepped toward the other while the other groups stepped backward. When the group that stepped forward reached the other group, they may kick the other group members. The role of the groups was reversed, as the song continued. Then each group said out which member of the opposite group they wanted to come to their group. The two wanted person then did jan-ken-pon to decide who should move to the other group. I was first at the left group but because I lost in jan-ken-pon so I had to move to the right group. This is the song for this game:

Katte ureshii hana ichi monme
Makete kuyashii hana ichi monme
Ano ko ga hoshii
Ano ko ja wakaran
Sōdan shiyō
Sō shiyō

(Then each group called out the name of the person they wanted)

******* ga hoshii

These are the pictures of the class and some of the students.

Yesterday I had a school visit to Chisetsu Elementary School (池雪小学校). This school visit is part of my Topics on Japan class. This elementary school is located at 東京都大田区東雪谷5-7-1. We went to this school by walking from our Ookayama (大岡山) campus. It was a long walk, it took maybe about 30 minutes to walk from our campus to this elementary school. This is an old public school established in 明治１１年 (1878). This year is its 131st anniversary. What an old school it is.

This is the school building.

First, after we arrived at the elementary school, we were brought into the library and welcomed by the principal, 岩崎先生. In the library, there are many children books all over the room. There are also many tables and chairs to facilitate the school children who want to read in the library. There is also a big Doraemon drawing on the wall.

After the welcome by the principal, we were brought to the class to which we were assigned. I was assigned to class 1の4. It is the first grade students class. I was paired with a Japanese because I cannot speak Japanese well. The students were all very excited when they saw us came into the class. The teacher who was in charge for 1-4 class was Noguchi Sensei. When we came into the class, they greeted us with “Apa kabar” which is a greeting in Indonesian.

The students then played some games with us. I do not remember the name of the game, so I will just describe the game one by one in my next post.

After playing the games, I was supposed to show some pictures about Indonesia to the children. I had made a simple slide for the children, but because I had no time to print it, so I just brought my heavy laptop computer from my dormitory to this elementary school. Unfortunately, my computer wouldn’t turn on at all. So I couldn’t show them any pictures about Indonesia at all. *A sign that I should buy a new computer.

The students were then given some time to ask questions. Some of them asked “What kind of food do you like?”, “Are there televisions in Indonesia?”, “Are there any cars in Indonesia?”, “Does it rain every night in Indonesia?”, “What anime/cartoon characters are famous in Indoensia?”. When I said that there are a lot of Japan animes in Indonesia, the child was very excited and asked me back, “Are there Naruto or Bleach?”. Well, of course there are, and I like to watch both of them.

After the question and answer time, it was finally lunch time. Some children followed the teacher to take the lunch. While some other children arranged the tables and chairs so that it made some squares around the classroom. Some other children asked me some more questions, then I showed them Indonesia money. I brought from 50 rupiah to 50000 rupiah. They were surprised when they saw the rupiahs. They were amazed when they saw 50000 rupiah. Maybe because 10000 yen is a big amount of money in Japan, so they thought that it was the same as in Indonesia. They continually said “Wah, 100 円, 1000 円, 5 万円, …”. Maybe they still did not understand that Indonesia’s currency is different from Japan.

The food finally arrived. The food served was 五目飯, 味噌汁, and a kind of dish made of beef, beans, and carrot. There was also milk for lunch. The children who was in charge of distributing the food wore white clothes which people usually use for distributing food for many people. The other children made a line and took the food distributed in the classroom. Everybody then sat down at their own chairs and had their lunch. During lunch time the children gave me some souvenirs or wrote some messages saying thank you to me. One little girl drew a picture of me and said that she liked me.

After lunch, we had some photographs. When I took out my camera and wanted to take a picture of them, they were amazed to know that Indonesia also had digital camera. They asked me what was the brand of my camera. Well, it’s Sony, Boy. They even asked me where my bag was from. It was also brought from Indonesia. Then they asked me again, “Are all your things from Indonesia”. I simply answered no, because I was wearing clothes from UNIQLO.

It was quite difficult for the teacher to arrange the children to have a picture together. But finally we got one photo.

It was finally time to leave the classroom. The children said “Selamat berpisah” to us and waved to us. It was as if we were celebrities. Some of them even guided us to the library, because we didn’t know which way we should take to go to the library. In the library we were given some hot drinks. After that we had school tour. We went into several rooms like the music room where the children perform a music for us. We also went to a Kanji class where we were allowed to write kanji with a brush on a special kanji writing paper. After this school tour we finally went back to our campus.

The third factory study tour in this semester was held at Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. at the Sodegaura LNG T

The third factory study tour in this semester was held at Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. at the Sodegaura LNG Terminal on Tuesday, December 8th 2009. Sodegaura LNG Terminal is located at 1-1 Nakasode, Sodegaura City, Chiba.

Tokyo Gas has several production terminals such as Sodegaura Terminal, Ohgishima Terminal, Negishi Terminal, etc. Sodegaura Terminal is the largest terminal of all. This Sodegaura Terminal is one of the world largest LNG receiving terminals. It receives LNG from Brunei, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, Alaska, and Qatar. Every year this terminal imports about 68.14 MMton gas from those countries above. This terminal has a production capacity of 26.31 million cubic meters of city gas per day.

LNG is the acronym for liquefied natural gas. Natural gas is liquefied when it is cooled to -162°C. At this temperature, we should not touch the LNG with bare hands because it can freeze every living things to death as shown by one of the staff of Tokyo Gas. The flowers put into the LNG became hard and frozen and died. A rubber ball put into the LNG hardened and it broke into pieces when it was dropped to the floor. In its liquefied state, the volume of LNG is 1/600th of its volume in gas form, therefore mass transportation by carrier becomes possible.

LNG is an environmentally friendly energy source. It has the least amount of emissions during combustion compared to petroleum and coal. It has energy efficiency about 70-80%, larger than other combusted energy sources such as petroleum and coal.

Sodegaura terminal has two piers and three berths to receive LNG imported from supplier countries. There are also several ships owned by Tokyo Gas to carry the LNG bought by Tokyo Gas from suppliers. The ships usually arrive at the Sodegaura terminal, get their LNG removed to the storage tanks, and then set out the next morning to be refilled with LNG from suppliers again.

Sodegaura terminal has many tanks to store the LNG imported. The tanks are differentiated according to the source of the LNG. Tanks for LNG from Indonesia are marked by a picture of orangutan, tanks for Australia are marked by a picture of koala. The LNG stored in the terminal is then heated by means of seawater to return it to gaseous state. It is then piped to customers after caloric value adjustment and odorization. Formerly, the gas is odorless but odor is added before it is distributed to customers as a safety precaution. The customers will be more aware if the gas pipes leak and can easily detect the source of the gas leak by smelling the gas odor.

The city gas produced in the Sodegaura terminal is delivered to customers via gas pipelines and is also supplied to three power plants of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. as fuel of electric power generation. Tokyo Gas also ships and sells LNG by using tank trucks and domestic LNG tankers to districts where local city gas providers and pipeline networks are not available and to industrial customers.

In my defense I’ve only been slacking off for a month… Well here is my demo hope you enjoy it!!

I’ll admit freely that I am NOT good at keeping these things up! My SL shop is jeaniesing’s things, and so my blog will be of those thinGs… and thinKs that come to mind from one end or another…

Its probably not admirable that I pride myself on being realtively boring as compared to many of my SL companions. I work more than anything in SL and truly enjoy the creative aspects… So… what’m I working on?

I’ve just finished a series of rowboat anims that I rather like… might take a tweak of two before they can be considered “done,” but I have a pet peeve about animations that don’t use the entire body when the entire body is called for

I did a quickie today because it appealed to me… a gal covering her breasts with a look of surprise.

A grenade throwing series that includes a quick draw from the right hip area

I finished a GREAT comic tree trimming set… the customer who ordered tree trimming animations (no “comic” requested) sent along this comment from a review of his Xmas shops, “A cleverly designed animation, Trim the Christmas Tree, allows one person to remove ornaments from a box to trim the tree while another teeters, off-balance on a ladder straining to place a golden star atop the tree.” I have a third in the series: the avatar climbs a stepladder and strains to the edges of balance before clinging on for dear life and sliding to the floor.

RL presents the challenges of the holidays… and the slight nervousness concerning an appication for an online masters program that appeals to me in Instructional media… I’m hoping to roll the things I always do into material for the classes including my work in SL.

In RL I teach music in a rural setting…. but I am also the resident geek and media expert. During the Xmas season I spend a lot of hours after school with kids in a mini recording studio. I give them the opportunity to use the school equipment and my own materials to record a few Xmas songs to CD as gifts to their parents and grandparents… Some upcoming geeky projects will be: #1. the foods classes will be filming cooking shows as their “final” after the holidays… If you think about a cooking show, it requires uber-organization and to have things prepared at several stages along the way. the shows will be limited to 5 minutes tops, and will require the kids to present the recipes and methods in a way that teach others. #2. the ceramics teacher and I are going to film a series of educational videos on her class topics…. as we have talked around the building, just about EVERY teacher would be interested in taking some other teachers’ classes…. because Art is a visual medium, we thought we might start there and make some mini lessons that could also be used as Demos when a substitute is in the classroom

As one of the admins of the school web page I’ve been teaching myself a little more about flash lately… we have flash encoded some videos and generated some excitement as neighboring school copy and try to trump our efforts…. well… you know how good competition is for learning …. I’ve gotta bump up my skillset to keep ahead of the other web admins who are all folks trained in web design as opposed to music
