(sighs and sinks into bench). It’s so lovely to be able to sink in on the wooden bench, to savour the feeling of being in a community again. ACRC is so cold (aircon cold) and cold (so quiet and dead). Hearing the commotions, smelling the toasted sandwich, seeing familiar faces once again is so …erm… heartwarming.

But we want the benches back to their original positions, and we want more power plugs. And the fans are not positioned properly (or were they even moved at all?)

Today shall be a lovely day…and I will continue this good behaviour of not highbeaming anyone (at least for today).

I’m sorry.

I really, really am. But grad school and work and my writing gig at WW have given me little to no time to post here (that is a lie, im just lazy and forgetful).

BUT…. things are rolling along in music land… cervantes had their grand-reopening (which the bathrooms weren’t finished for), I went and saw a pretty good little post-grunge trio called The Ultraviolent Lights at Quixotes (odd venue for such a band) and ended up being one of three people in the audience, and i made it to one night of the disco biscuits at the fox (i don’t remember much from that, other than the music never stops at a DB show).

and today, i snagged two tickets to two of the three nights of the return (sortof) of the string cheese incident at Red Rocks this summer. so, my summer is starting to take shape it seems….

that, and rumored phish dates:
Wrigley 6/10
Deercreek 6/11,12,13
Huntington Park Columbus 6/16
Charlotte 6/18
Va Beach 6/19
Toronto 6/21
hershey park 6/22
MPP 6/23
atlanta 6/25, 26, 27

break
7/12 Jones beach Flushing NY
15th PNC
7/16&17
Camden 18&19
7/31 Denver
Gorge 8/5,6,7
VEGAS 8/9,19 (MGM Grand?)
Hollywood Bowl tour closer 8/13,14

SO, i hope that’s a good amount for my first update of the year. i promise i’ll post more in the near future!

OH, CRAP. i almost forgot:

I’m going to be in Jamaica in mid-march, so more travel bloggins to come!

.

.

.

.

In early January I had the extraordinary opportunity to take a cycling trip in Northern Thailand and Laos. Although I travel whenever I can, this experience was unforgettable for me. We rode alongside people working in rice paddies, tackled dirt roads (with only one set of broken ribs) that lead to remote villages consisting of a handful of shacks, and stopped our bikes at factories where manufacturing took place laboriously, by hand.

The poverty we encountered among hill tribes in both Thailand and Laos was eye opening. We observed people who still live without electricity, cook over an open fire and brush their teeth and wash their hair in the Mekong River. Children as young as three years old knew enough English to beg for money, reminiscent of Fagin’s gang in Oliver.

.

Girls dancing at a local school

For those of you who read Anne Fadiman’s The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, we visited Hmong villages and found the Hmong tribe to be extremely entrepreneurial and pragmatic. The women, who customarily marry around age 14 and have as many children, are responsible for making and selling their exquisite handicrafts. Sadly, too often men spend the days in their huts without windows, smoking Opium while young children parent those even younger than themselves.

.

“Of greatest concern was the absence of

I visited many local schools and found them surprisingly similar to local Western schools in certain respects, although they were as different as can be imagined in others. Of greatest concern was the absence of uniform guidelines for safety or sanitation. But I observed many lovely practices such as children growing their own vegetables and taking them to market. We had the good fortune to come upon children preparing for a dance contest between schools and were treated to a demonstration of local dances and tribal costumes. I was delighted to see caring teachers, motivated and happy students, and classrooms equipped with desks, books, musical instruments, and at times a computer, revealing that education is valued even in relatively poor communities.

This week we keep it local and have a special guest, Ian, from the Las Vegas Jam Band Society. We “kangfirm” a few things too, like the fact that none of us are going to be able to attend any of the shows that were announced this week including the return of SCI.

The announcement for Bonnaroo is scheduled for Feb 9th 2010 but we have some breaking news about an album that’s going to be covered. That’s right, you heard it first on TWoL!

For all the European fans of TWoL we’ve got a special tour annoucement from Jack Johnson apparently he’s having a few shows in Hawaii and then doing some serious traveling abroad.
Finally listen as Steve takes his lumps on his prediction of ticket sales for trey tour. I mean it’s pretty ridiculous that no one would want to go to Minneapolis in the middle of winter right? TWoL is calling it right now, the MIN show is going to be the sleeper show of Trey Tour.

The Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv is the eccentric maiden aunt of Israeli museums. Spread across a sprawling expanse of hills and gardens at the edge of the Tel Aviv University campus in Ramat Aviv, the museum is actually a complex of several large theme pavilions, offering an impressive assortment of indoor exhibits that include ancient ceramics, glass, coins and metallurgy, as well as a network of paths that wind their way past several much smaller pavilions and outdoor exhibits. The small pavilions display reconstructions of ancient olive presses and flour mills; the outdoor exhibitions feature everything from Mameluke and Ottoman-period drinking fountains to 20th-century railroad cars.

The International official said that many Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip and Syria were convinced

The International official said that many Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip and Syria were convinced that the Mossad has infiltrated the movement’s top ranks. “Obviously, the assassination of Mabhouh is a huge security blunder for Hamas, because it shows that the Israeli agents are sitting among our leaders in Damascus.”

The report was prepared by nine groups in advance of a Knesset debate on the infiltration protection bill scheduled for Wednesday. The participating organizations – the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, Amnesty-Israel, ASAF, the Migrant Workers Hotline, the African Refugees Development Center, the Israel Religious Action Center, Kav LaOved and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel – warn that the new law means that Israel would be backing out of its obligations to the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, incarcerating innocent refugees or deporting them to countries where their lives will be at risk and criminalizing those who aid asylum seekers.
The Hamas official said Hamas was also looking into the possibility that Israel has infiltrated the Syrian security services, which are responsible for the safety of the leaders of all the radical Palestinian groups based in Damascus, including Hamas.

The teenager, S. (his name is being withheld to protect his privacy), said he was beaten repeatedly by Karmiel police officers after being arrested on suspicion of carrying 1.2 grams of hashish and, according to police, “plotting to break and enter into a home,” – a charge vehemently denied by the teenager’s family, who say his only mistake was to urinate in the yard of a neighbor while waiting for his girlfriend to come home.
“We don’t rule out the possibility that the Israelis or some other security agency that works with them have recruited a senior Syrian intelligence officer who feeds them with details about the movements and whereabouts of representatives of Hamas and other groups, particularly Hizbullah,” he said.

Welcome everyone to the Hall of Fame in the Grand Castle of Bucketon. I am Baron von Bucket the 1st and it’s time for the second annual Bucketon Awards (Ignoring Lolruses)! That’s right, BAIL is here for the second time!

Despite all the strange events the past few months, we decided not to skip this exciting event. Hopefully it will help everyone relax in these troubling times.

Many buckets and bucket-related things/people/etc were given awards once again this year. Some old awards have been retired and some new ones have been added.

Let’s begin… Here are the winners in each Person/Creature category!

1. Most Prolific Bucket Awareness Gatherer of the Year (MPBAGY)

Baron von Bucket the 1st; From the ruling of Bucketon and Pailbalon to the numerous adoption events he has hosted, the Baron has always been a notable bucket lover.

Anti Bucket Faerie; Also known as the Bubket Faerie, he/she/it has been a thorn in the side of every bucket lover for a long time. Currently it is incapable of entering Bucketon, reducing the damage it has been capable of causing. Yet still the number of bubkets rises each year.

3. Bucket Army Co-Leader of the Year (BACLY)

I have heard a lot of talk of this film Avatar for a long time. Seems that it will usher in a new wa

I have heard a lot of talk of this film Avatar for a long time. Seems that it will usher in a new way of filmmaking. I have heard it is one of the greatest films of all time and that it will be the biggest blockbuster ever. There has been talk that James Cameron is a genius and has topped even himself and the likes of George Lucas in the realm of sci-fi films. I have also heard that with the making of this film, he is pushing a political statement of environmental conservation and is championing a liberal agenda that hopes to topple the establishment and give Al Gore a hard-on.

Really? You think James Cameron spent more than $300 million dollars just to make a statement about military force in regards to precious natural resources? Yes, I know that Cameron went to all this trouble just so he could stick it to the oil drillers and strip mining companies of the world; a simple press release was just not going to cut it.

Of course the world of Pandora and the making of this movie were just created so he could push his Gaia-loving agenda on to the movie going public. There is no possible way that he might have created this film to simply entertain an audience and make boat loads of money while making a movie he has been kicking around for decades in his head.

This new firestorm of controversy in gleaming some political subtext from his most recent science fiction film makes me wonder what else Cameron has been telling us in his past projects. Now that I think about it, I am sure the film Aliens was a movie made simply to bring to light the plight of union worker in this country. The aliens in the film represented illegal aliens coming in and eliminating jobs for hard working Americans when they killed and cocooned the men, women, and children at the Weyland-Yutani terra forming plant on LV-426 (the aliens, not the Mexicans).

It is so clear to me now the the film Terminator was a two-fold criticism of unsafe sex and violence against women. Sarah Conner did not insist on protection which led to the conception of what turned out to be a bastard child if you really think about it, outside of wedlock having promiscuous sex with a man without a job or any stability in his life. She then had to get herself away from a violent relationship with a terminator machine from the future which of course is all about abusive relationships and dealing with her own issues with her father as a result.

I could keep going, but I think you get my point. When did this country become so politicized that we turn a suspecting eye on blue people as trying to shove environmentalism down our throats? I mean for Christ’s sake, we are furthering political agendas based on three-dimensional alien villagers! I am sorry, but if you feel threatened by the political implications of native american-like fictional characters in a PG-13 film, you need to reexamine your outlook on life.

It seems the conservatives and those without a driving passion for the environment are somehow threatened by a film populated by blue people and Sigourney Weaver. Also they have criticized the film because her character smokes, as if it some add for Marlboro. Hell, back in the day everyone smoked; James Dean, Clint Eastwood, the Rat Pack, they were all the coolest SOB’s around and they smoked. But I guess that since this country has relegated smokers to basically lighting up in a wheat field in rural Nebraska under a blanket, then we can’t even think that it should ever be shown in a film again; just ignore it and it will go away, like that rash you’ve got. Smoking characters in films should now require an NC-17 rating so as to keep young people from ever seeing another cigarette again. Yes, this seems oh so reasonable.

I am just blown away that we, as a country, cannot just enjoy anything anymore. Here we are with a 90% animated, sci-fi film, and we find ourselves trying to deconstruct the political agenda between the lines. Are we going to start looking for hidden messages in Anime next? I know that Pikachu bastard has some socialist manifesto it’s trying to brainwash my children with.

Whatever the case, we need to take a step back and take three deep breaths. This is ludicrous to be looking for the meaning behind the film as anything but playful and mesmerizing in it’s beauty and creativity. Not every one has an hidden agenda folks, especially make-believe blue people.

The year is starting out with SCI Service Corporation International getting a hold of some reporters and positively spinning their efforts. It is hard to believe that any reporter could miss the national scandals that were Service Corporation International in 2009.

Recently,Several articles have been found to positively spin SCI,Service Corporation International and Dignity Memorial(TM)

This is an example that could pass as an advertsement for Service Corporation International.

If more people knew about the advantages of preplanning, Dasso said they would clamor to take part. As a member of Dignity Memorial — a network that includes more than 1,000 cremation, funeral and cemetery providers in America and Canada — Langevin-Mussetter can offer some specialized services.

via www.yakima-herald.com

There seems to be a pattern in these articles.

First The AARP is often invoked. The AARP advocates preplanning not prepaying (very different things)for good reasons.

Second, preplanning and prepaying are interchanged in the article as the same thing. Assigning preplanning and prepaying is a basic and simple funeral scam.

Third Funeral Scandal is left out of the article. In early 2009 SCI was reported by the Washington Post to be abusing Veterans Corpses heading to Arlington National Cemetery.

Later in 2009 SCI was reported to have desecrated 500 graves at Eden Memorial park outside Los Angeles.

Now not all SCI or Dignity Memorial(TM) folks are bad. When writing about these folks and their funeral locations it is only fair to present both sides and include the Scandal. One does not have to go to the extremes of the new NYSE:SCI nicknames of Big Death, Enron Evil, Scsi and evil empire.

The truth about prefunding a funeral has not been not presented honestly in many of the news reports. There are true dangers and risks to prepaying, and sending in monthly payments.(guaranteed preneed) The AARP has often warned about these specifics.

I like…The Defiant!

The Defiant was one of the best things about Star Trek. Okay, let me redefine that. The Defiant was the best ship on Star Trek. Hell, it was probably the best Sci-Fi ship ever. You have to think, before the late nineties, with special effects costing so much, ’space ships’ may have had loads of guns, but never really used them that much due to the costs of SFX. Since the late 1990’s, every starship has been blowing everything else to bits and so they all fade into sameyness.

But The Defiant came at the right time. It was the first time a space ship on TV kicked ass as it was at the time when SFX was becoming affordable. So when Sisko called out ‘Battle Stations’, you know there was going to be fireworks! Plus, being on the iconic Deep Space Nine meant that it had a hallowed place in TV history…

It was a shame that The Defiant was destroyed by the end of the series. But like everything on DS9, it had to go. The series was wrapped up perfectly, and of course, the original Defiant had to go along with the rest of the show. So I look back through reruns and internet streams as the most fun you could ever see on the small screen…

I went to see 3 movies in the last two weekends. Because I am an action and thrill junkie, I went to see movies that I thought would give me a rush. All of them delivered.

Now I will forwarn you, I am not the type of critic that looks at a movie for plot and all that. I go to the movies strictly to be entertained. So, with that said, you know my expectations aren’t that high.

AVATAR (4 out of 5 stars)

Okay, I have to be honest. When I first heard of this movie I thought it was The Last Airbender (Avatar). The Last Airbender (Avatar). You see, my kids and I watch this cartoon all the time – and I love, love, love it. Now, once I realized that AVATAR the movie was about this guy who’s brain is placed in this being who he controls from another location, I was still intrigued. I went to see this at the IMAX movie, in 3D and I was truly impressed. The storyline was decent, and the scenery was downright amazing – especially when you see it in 3D. There was a sprinkle of love, lots of action, and a world that I would love to live in. My husband said it was like, Dancing with wolves, but in SciFi.

SHERLOCK HOLMES (3 out of 5 stars)

I actually liked this movie. It was visually interesting, dark, and the chemistry between the leading men was entertaining. Sherlock was intelligent, strong, and eclectic. Holmes was the sane one – or sort of the co-dependent one. Throw in a fake supernatural element that gets despoiled and you have a fun movie.

DAYBREAKERS (3 out of 5 stars)

This movie was a pleasant surprise. It had an okay story line. Vampires are running low on blood, and need to find a substitute or harvest humans to survive. Humans are on the run, and a miraculous cure for vampirism is found – but no one wants it. There was suspense, gore, attraction, and more suspense. Kind of quirky, but still a fun ride.

2009 wasn’t exactly a picture perfect year for the funeral industry. Marred by scandal after scandal, most press that was given to the industry was negative. Lets hope the 2010 can be a better year.

2009 also brought us another consumer driven casket competitor in Walmart, the worlds largest retailer, who is partnering with Star Legacy to provide caskets online at a discounted price. Walmart entered this venue fueled by Costco and Amazon.com.

2009 also led way for the worlds largest casket supplier, Batesville, to purchase the burial vault portion of Goria Corporation in a very quite acquisition that just received press late in December when the story was first published here on ConnectingDirectors.com.

Below is a recap of some of the most popular stories to appear on ConnectingDirectors.com in 2009:

I finally got them. My x-rays from my stay at Craig Hospital. I imagined a long lengthy process of paperwork ahead of me when I first decided that I wanted my own copies of them, so I put if of until a few days ago. I was wrong, and it took only 3 days to receive the cds full of images in the mail.

I still can’t believe that I actually went through such an injury and hospitalization sometimes. It’s like I was there for it all, but I have distanced myself from it to a point that I don’t feel like that girl was me. I thought maybe I’d be upset looking at the x-rays again, but truthfully I felt nothing. Zip. Nada. Zero.

In the past year, I have emotionally grown and let a lot of things finally go, like the relationships I lost because of this injury. I blamed it for a lot of loss I felt, but I have come to see that those relationships most likely would have ended without any help. Truthfully, the friendship I had with the driver wasn’t stable at the time, and whether I like to admit it or not, we probably wouldn’t be best friends right now anyway. I can’t blame her for that anymore than I can blame myself. Life is just life. I think a lot of my anger was misdirected, and letting it go really has lightened my life in a lot of ways. The resentment was eating me alive, not anyone else. I’m glad I can be rid of it.

Front. Titanium plate, 4 screws to hold it in place, plus a piece of my hip bone to replace my shattered C6 vertebre.

Side. Yes, those are screws in the back of my head too. I also had 2 in the front in my forehead. They kept the halo in place to heal my broken C2.

Entire halo x-ray. I wore it for 3 months, and they would tighten the screws every week because they would often get loose and slip along my skull. Torture contraption disguised as a medical brace. As much as I hated it, I was scared to have it taken off (which they did with normal screwdrivers while I was awake!) because I didn’t want that C2 to accidentally move or something.
