Over at Terra Sig on scienceblogs.com there is an article about the current danger facing some peopl

Over at Terra Sig on scienceblogs.com there is an article about the current danger facing some people in Canada who may fall for the charlatan work of naturopaths. The Ontario legislature is considering passing a bill which will allow naturopathic quacks to give out prescriptions. It’s utter lunacy.

Naturopaths (I’m not sure if that’s the proper term, but they aren’t proper doctors, so fuck them) are not qualified to do anything substantial. These people run the risk of prescribing contra-indicated medicines, offering ‘treatments’ which actually ignore the real problem, and allowing them prescription rights will give them respect they have not earned. People may actually seek out these mountebanks thinking they are getting real help. They aren’t.

I recently wrote about Christopher Maloney, charlatan-extraordinaire. He wrote into the local paper implying that black elderberry has vaccination properties for H1N1. He completely misrepresented a small study (which wasn’t even directly on H1N1) and he has put people at risk. He’s a dangerous liar who is unqualified to be giving out medical advice in such a manner. The worst thing about him is that he isn’t an exception – he’s an example, an example of the sort of cherry-picking, misrepresenting, lying, dangerous people who populate the yellow pages under “naturopathic ‘medicine’”.

Here I am reposting a laundry list (originally by Steve Thomas) of why naturopaths should not be given the considerations we offer real doctors.

1) With 23,000 doctors in Ontario, and fewer then 1000 naturopaths, the argument that granting naturopaths prescription rights will ease the burden on the healthcare system is a bit silly.

2) The assertion that the body has the potential to heal itself is not a scientific one. When given “natural” support only, the body will die by the age of 45, probably of infectious diseases. Modern advances in medicine make long-life possible, not herbs and roots from a 2,000 year old playbook.

3) Saying “science” doesn’t make it so. The call of “the healing power of nature at work” to be not magic, but good science, is ridiculous on its face….the human body is really good at succumbing to pathogens and injury, and the “natural” world is really good at killing us.

4) Old and tradition do not a science make. Yes, herbal supplements have been around for centuries. So has prostitution. Old doesn’t mean effective. It means old. I want my medicine to be new, awesome, and if possible, administered by a robot from the future.

5) Regulation does not a science make, even if it was 85 years ago.

6) I wonder, what is the naturopathic remedy for a broken bone? For that matter, how effective is naturopathic birth control?

7) Why the natural fetish? If you’re dying from a disease, do you really care if your treatment is “natural” or not? Why take an herbal supplement that a person tells you *might* work, when you could take the most recent advances in medical technology that we know *will* work?

Natural doesn’t mean safe. It doesn’t mean effective. Arsenic, poisonous mushrooms, gravel and bird-crap are also natural and you don’t see me putting them into my body.

9) Lets not forget that many people see a naturopath because they’re dazzled by the word “Naturopathic Doctor, or ND”. Let’s be perfectly clear: Naturopaths are NOT doctors. The Naturopathy Act, 2007 allows them to be called “Naturopaths”, not “doctors.” You need to go to medical school to be called a doctor. Naturopaths just granted themselves that title as a subtle PR stunt.

10) What is the diagnostic method a naturopath uses to test if a body is “in balance”? What laboratory equipment can you use to check for “wellness”?

11) The calls that naturopaths aim to treat the root cause is nonsense, otherwise they wouldn’t be asking to prescribe pain-killers, and anti-inflammatories.

12) If naturopathy is just as effective as medicine, then why don’t these naturopaths just go to med school?

13) The medical community is constantly advocating good health, diet, nutrition and exercise…naturopaths don’t have a monopoly on knowing the merits of preventative health.

14) Naturopathic college of Ontario requires a 4-year Bachelor’s eduction, but does not require for a Bsc or any science pre-requisites. The historical GPA for entry to the CCNM is 3.3 (ranging from 2.8-3.7). Compare that to Med school, which is turning away people with 4.0 averages.

15) The length of time for training is meaningless if the education quality is so lackluster. I can study levitation for 20 years but it doesn’t mean that I could fly.

16) “Every review of our record has recognized the safety of the more natural approach of naturopathic care.” Every review? Really? Black Cohosh, anyone?

17) The authors conveniently left out the deaths attributed to naturopathic prescriptions in Washington and Oregon, showing once again their contempt for honest data-gathering and fondness for cherry-picking whatever information suits their pre-conceived narrative.

18) The CCNM is NOT associated with ANY Canadian university, and it’s dishonest to artificially conflate the two together, even if you’re being indirect about it.

19) “The need for NDs to have prescribing authority was accepted by every other regulated health profession” Not even close to accurate! The bill passed the first two readings because the relevant health care communities had approved of their OWN amendments, and was not reflective of the naturopathy amendments.

20) The CCNM also is also teaching homeopathy and colonic irrigation, neither of which do anything beyond a placebo effect….Back from your cherry-picking trip yet?

21) If passed, the committee to decide which drugs would be prescribed would be made up of naturopaths! Unelected naturopaths deciding what they can prescribe!

22) Since naturopaths *are unqualified* to prescribe medication, granting them these powers will create needless risk of drug contra-indications.

23) This is not about freedom of choice for the patient, and it never has been. This is about granting naturopathy legislative and legal legitimacy because it can’t do so under the rules of science and evidence.

The scientific community is crystal clear on medicine, yet these people would have our very modern system degenerate with some very 19th century modalities.

Oh, and this is actually a rather important post beyond trying to save the health of people. Whereas I had created a category specifically for Andreas Moritz, King Snake Oil Salesman, I think I can expand it to naturopathic ‘medicine’: all naturopathy posts shall go under Pure Bullshit from now on.

OK. I’ve started writing this post four times now, and November is almost over,

OK. I’ve started writing this post four times now, and November is almost over, so I have to get this out there. This month marks the 150th year since the publication of Charles Darwin’s book, On The Origin of Species and this year is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. Darwin’s ideas about living things being driven by environmental forces led to his theory of natural selection which, of course, contributed mightily to the theory of evolution.

The theory of evolution is an amazing insight into how nature actually operates, and it is akin to Galileo’s “discovery” that the earth revolves around the sun (it had been doing just that since it formed, despite our beliefs)*. Darwin’s contribution to natural science, however, is still a point of contention in some places right here in the United States. Worse of all, there are many charlatans and snake oil salesmen who have taken advantage of this situation to peddle their psuedo-science and nonsense to a scientifically illiterate population.

(* Galileo was considered a heretic for what he “believed” and was excommunicated from the church and imprisoned. Luckily for his soul, Pope John Paul II forgave him in 1992 and formally accepted the heliocentric model as true.)

Rather than lament the sad state of affairs concerning evolution education in our schools, I would like to share with you some of my favorite sites that celebrate Charles Darwin, his discoveries, the theory of evolution and genuine science education.

On The Origin of Species: Why not begin by reading for yourself what Charles Darwin had to say? Even though it is a work of science and was produced a hundred and fifty years ago, the language Darwin uses to discuss his observations and explain his ideas is amazingly accessible and easy to follow. Best of all, you can read his own criticisms and discover how this genius of biology worked to clarify what he saw as weaknesses in his “laws of variation” and “natural selection”.

Darwin Online: Maybe reading just one book by Darwin isn’t enough for you. If that’s the case, then you can check out all of his significant writings online at this site. You’ll also find a great collection of diagrams and illustrations that accompanied his writing. The only resource I don’t like at this site is the audio files. The computer voice that is used to “read” the works is hard to listen to for a long time.

Darwin Today: Interesting site with announcements to events connected to Darwin and his ideas. Updated regularly to stay current, this site also contains a few simulation flash games that deal with ideas in biology. Think you could be a successful wild plant? Go try it.

Teachers’ Domain resources about Charles Darwin: You must register with Teachers’ Domain in order to download materials, but it’s absolutely free. Produced by WGBH and sponsored by the National Science Foundation, this site has lesson plans, videos and slide show presentations that are all suited for the classroom. Bookmark this site and I promise it will reward you well on many topics, not just Darwin.

Evolution vs. Creationism: Is Evolution Just a Theory? There are plenty of YouTube videos that deal with the “controversy” between evolution and creationism. The truth is that there is no controversy and evolution is what the average non-scientist would call a “fact” or a “law”. This video should help clear things up a little as it is a critical discussion distinguishing how language can be used to both illuminate and/or obfuscate a position. My favorite part is when Dr. Eugenie C. Scott breaks down the scientific meaning of a “theory” by explaining that, “theories are the most important things in science … Theory to a scientist means explanation. And these are logical constructs of facts, of tested hypothesis, of laws, of all kinds of stuff that taken together and put in a logical descriptive fashion, help us understand some kind of natural phenomenon.” Got that? Good.

I’m sure there are plenty of other great sites out there celebrating Charles Darwin, but I can’t list them all. Let me know if you find anything out there. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you find something worthwhile.

A “silent” polymorphism in the MDR1 gene changes substrate specificity, Kimchi-Sarfaty C, Oh JM, Kim IW, Sauna ZE, Calcagno AM, Ambudkar SV, Gottesman MM, Science. 2007 Jan 26;315(5811):525-8, doi: 10.1126/science.1135308.

Synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) do not produce altered coding sequences, and therefore they are not expected to change the function of the protein in which they occur. We report that a synonymous SNP in the Multidrug Resistance 1 (MDR1) gene, part of a haplotype previously linked to altered function of the MDR1 gene product P-glycoprotein (P-gp), nonetheless results in P-gp with altered drug and inhibitor interactions. Similar mRNA and protein levels, but altered conformations, were found for wild-type and polymorphic P-gp. We hypothesize that the presence of a rare codon, marked by the synonymous polymorphism, affects the timing of cotranslational folding and insertion of P-gp into the membrane, thereby altering the structure of substrate and inhibitor interaction sites.

Both wild-type and haplotype P-gps had comparable IC50 (µg trypsin) values in the presence of verapamil, which suggests that the altered conformation can be corrected by drug interaction with P-gp.

Oh how quickly eleven days can pass by when you’re busy cataloging new books, checking in supplies, updating the student database, making sure the copy room isn’t melting down and scheduling classes to come down for their library orientations. I’ve still been trolling around the Internet, looking for great finds to share, but my discoveries are a little uneven. Thus, I’ve decided to revisit and reintroduce one of my favorite places on the vast web of information.

While some people still don’t fully appreciate or recognize the importance of blogging, it is an emerging sector of the Internet that has transformed the way we communicate with and inform one another. Most well known bloggers are professional writers from the news and entertainment industries who have simply transferred their skills over to the electronic medium. For me, this is the least exciting sector of this new wave of thinkers available to the general public because it is mostly the same commercial stuff that is already disseminated through television, radio and advertising. (Memes are real).

One of my favorite “watering holes” on the Internet is ScienceBlogs, precisely because it is about a subject that I feel the public is generally under-informed, and unfortunately uninterested, about. Unlike E-blogger or wordpress (host of this blog) where anyone can sign up for an account and start posting, ScienceBlogs seems to have standards, for it is home to only seventy one (71) blogs. Written by science professors, teachers and graduate students, the blogs found at this clearinghouse are divided into eleven sections including life science, the environment, education, physical science, politics and a half dozen other categories. I would be lying if I said that I have checked them all out, but I am certain that everyone with even a burgeoning interest in the wonders of science will find something worth reading here.

I invite you to peruse their offerings and please let me know if you find anything worth sharing, since I have stopped looking because I am happy with the sites I already frequent regularly. After all, even though the Internet is ubiquitous and open 24/7, there are only so many hours in the day for us mortals. Here then are my recommended reads:

Pharyngula: Written by PZ Myers, associate professor and biologist at the University of Minnesota, this site focuses mostly on the battle between science and religion in our schools and culture. Myers does not mince words when it comes to expressing his distaste and distress over the politics of belief that impede the progress of true science education in this country. I only wish there were more people, especially educators, willing to take his position.

The Frontal Cortex: So maybe there isn’t a brain region (that I could find) called the frontal cortex; though there is a pre-frontal cortex that is associated with memory tasks and risk taking activities. Still, this blog, written by Jonah Lehrer (a Wired contributing editor and author of Proust was a Neuorscientist), is interesting in its scope and topics. If you like to wonder about how brains work, Lehrer is up to the challenge of making you think about common things, in uncommon ways.

Not Exactly Rocket Science: Despite the self-deprecatory title, this blog’s mission seems to be to get the masses to appreciate “rocket science” or at least, general science. Written by award winning writer, Ed Yong, the posts are “his attempt to make the latest scientific discoveries interesting to everyone by beating jargon, confusion and elitism with the stick of good writing.” Cool graphics don’t hurt.

Maybe three recommendations doesn’t seem like enough to you, but remember that each of these blogs has got at least one year’s worth of reading and entries in its archives. That should give anyone enough to read and consider for a while. Still, I would love to hear that you have found something that piques your interest enough to make it part of your daily reading. Please post your feedback in the comments section below, so that other visitors of this blog know what you’re thinking.

Thank you for stopping by, and I will see you all tomorrow.

Biology is harder to learn than quantum physics. Why? Because most people think they totally get biology, but everyone knows nobody gets quantum physics. Therefore, any effort to explore quantum physics will result in new learning, but people rarely learn new biology. The bottom line is that our brains are full of biology, which would be good if most of it did not consist of falsehoods

I’m trying to find a place to stay in London and I have to spend most of my time searching.. I didn’t have time to write anything, so I’ll just mention a few links to neuroscience, psychology posts that I liked this week:

1. BPS Research Digest Blog has a very interesting article about kids with invisible friends. A study by Gabriel Trionfi and Elaine Reese showed that these children have superior narrative skills… Read more here

So, my stomach hurts. I don’t know why and I don’t care to know why. But, I did have pink lemonade for three days straight. I figured the other day that it could be the pink lemonade. Unfortunately, I wasn’t fully done with the final two liter of pink lemonade and since I refuse to waste something I paid for, I drank the rest of it today. My stomach still hurts and I also had three bowls of cereal today and I’m sure that didn’t help! That’s all I ate so I probably need to eat something warm to help my stomach.

That’s the reason why I’m unproductive. My stomach hurt so much that I couldn’t work or do anything requiring a lot of physical movement. Most of my activities were online and offline talking on the phone. Yesterday since I couldn’t work, I spent most my night tweeting about the horrible BET Awards, but it was fun to make fun of the BET Awards for being lame. I didn’t watch last years BET Awards but I still feel that I’ve seen enough to judge that this years was horrible. With that said, they did have to revamp the show so that more time went to paying tribute to MJ, so I’ll cut them some slack as I’m sure it’s not easy to turn around a show in 3 days. I am worried that the MJ death has taken media attention from the Iran election protest, I’d rather see that coverage on the news rather then the media constantly covering the controversy of MJ. I also have to prepare to move and I only have one box packed, and it’s full of purses. I would say my stomach is preventing me from packing but honestly, I don’t want to move, our apartment is great and also, I was supposed to pack some more before my stomach started hurting and the empty boxes haven’t been filled yet lol. I hate moving, I can’t wait to get my own place so I can stay in one spot for a long time. There’s no point in me getting my own place until I graduate but I might move out earlier.

Middle of last week I was playing with the flash on my camera and guess which one is done with no flash and which one is done with sync flash. I love guessing games Now that I look at it, it’s not that hard to figure out. Also, last week I made a cooking breakthrough. I was able to cook cornbread. Granted I did only have to follow the directions on the back of the box, but the cornbread came out so good and I was happy cause I rarely cook or know how to cook. Here’s some pictures or the momentous event. I know right, I have to take pictures of everything lol.

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-643" title="MILK!!!
I don’t live in Florida but, the cup I got from either Jacksonville, FL or Disney World. Also, being bored as usual I took pictures of my cat. His name is Koki. In the first picture he’s just waking up and btw those are breast under my dress which I couldn’t hide from the camera while taking a picture of him. Btw, theres apparently cookies that claim to enlarge breast size, I say don’t do it ladies though I love my breast, they get me things & make me look hot, the downside is that they get in the way sometimes. Anyways, the other pictures is of him climbing up my leg treating my like some object he can use to stretch on.

As far as online related things are concerned. While my stomach was hurting I thought it’d be a perfect time to Blender up me a new header for this blog. It actually didn’t take a long time to do it, but it did take me a long time to figure out what font I wanted to use. So, I downloaded a lot of fonts from this site and then tested them all in Blender and came up with the font you see now. Also, I redid the sidebar a little bit. My other blog was approved today by BlogBurst. I have no idea how it will help my blog, but the fact that they have to approve you first makes it seem important lol. I also updated my Google Reader to add more science, geek, and personal blogs. Which, took longer than I thought it would cause then I had to organize them and crap into folders. Oh, and I love videos featuring a creative way to use Post-Its so, heres one that came out a few days ago.

So, hope you enjoy your lives and try to prevent stomach aches and be more productive.

Once I [have see] that only darwinists were present I was expecting a demonstration of how darwinism could account for ADM’s findings. Or, at least, why ADM’s hypothesis couldn’t be considered as scientific. Neither came.

Τέλος, fin ou objectif.

8. Avec au rôle comique principal Francis Collins.
