Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) — Adrian Gibbs, the virologist who said in May that swine flu may have escaped from a laboratory, published his findings today, renewing discussion about the origins of the pandemic virus.

The new H1N1 strain, which was discovered in Mexico and the U.S. in April, may be the product of three strains from three continents that swapped genes in a lab or a vaccine-making plant, Gibbs, and fellow Australian scientists wrote in Virology Journal. The authors analyzed the genetic makeup of the virus and found its origin could be more simply explained by human involvement than a coincidence of nature.

Their study, published in a free, online journal reviewed by other scientists, follows debate among researchers six months ago, when Gibbs asked the World Health Organization to consider the hypothesis. After reviewing Gibbs’ initial three-page paper, WHO and other organizations concluded the pandemic strain was a naturally occurring virus and not laboratory-derived.

“It is important that the source of the new virus be found if we wish to avoid future pandemics rather than just trying to minimize the consequences after they have emerged,” Gibbs and colleagues John Armstrong and Jean Downie said in today’s eight- page study.

Bird Flu Pandemic - November 25, 2009

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine.

 

New reports from Iowa and North Carolina are raising concerns that the deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations that have been confirmed by the WHO in Ukraine, Norway and elsewhere have already reached the United States.  In Iowa, a report that doctors are seeing “very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them” in H1N1 patients is creating concerns among health experts that the deadly Ukraine H1N1 has already spread there. 

In addition, a report of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 swine flu in North Carolina is raising questions about the ability of medical authorities to combat H1N1 if thousands of people do start dying.  If deadly H1N1 swine flu mutations have already reached the United States, what does that mean?  Doctors in Ukraine have been reporting that victims of H1N1 there are experiencing violent hemorrhaging in their lungs. As the patients near death, their lungs reportedly become as “black as charcoal” and literally begin to disintegrate.  Will this start happening soon inside the U.S.?

The news report causing the most concern today is the one about H1N1 patients in Iowa.  Commenting on a dramatic spike in H1N1 deaths in Iowa, Dr. Gregory Schmunk told KCCI news that what doctors there are seeing ”is very heavy, wet hemorrhagic lungs, lungs with a lot of blood in them.”

Hemorrhagic lungs that are filled with blood? That sounds precisely like what is taking place in Ukraine.

Last week, the WHO confirmed that an H1N1 mutation had been discovered in Ukraine. This H1N1 mutation involved a receptor binding domain change, and it is apparently causing the H1N1 virus to become much more virulent.

Just like the new report in Iowa, many victims of H1N1 in Ukraine have been experiencing violent hemorrhaging in the lungs.  Temperatures inside the lungs of patients in Ukraine have been reported to be as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit.  As the patient near death, the lungs turn to mush and literally become as black as charcoal.

 Melody Lin, deputy director of National Institutes of Health – Office for Human Research Protection, US, said that training research teams on basic ethical practices in research followed globally within the country will increase the world’s interest in India as a venue for clinical trials

India has become one of the key players in international biomedical research, with its IT capabilities, willingness of the government to start reforms and trained technicians, Melody Lin, deputy director, National Institutes of Health – Office for Human Research Protection, U.S., said.

Training research teams on basic ethical practices in research followed globally within the country will increase the world’s interest in India as a venue for clinical trials, she said. Dr. Lin was speaking at the inauguration of Indo-US CITI workshop on ‘Promoting Research Ethics Education in India’ organised at Sri Ramachandra University (SRU), here, on Tuesday.

Talking about the varsity’s partnership with University of Miami, U.S., its Pro-Chancellor (research) S.P. Thyagarajan said it was significant that these two institutions had come together to launch the ‘Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)’ Research Ethics programme in the country. It will fulfil a great need, even as India emerges as a hot destination for clinical research involving human subjects and patients.

He added that clinical trials in India were growing at an annual aggregated growth ratio of 60 per cent. In 2004, the budget for clinical trials in India had crossed USD 100 million and it is being predicted that by 2010, the industry will spend USD 300 million or more. At present there are over 150 research organisations that are co-ordinating and conducting clinical trials on behalf of and in association with multinationals.

The reasons why India’s popularity in the circuit included a comparative cost advantage, the availability of a huge pool of trained manpower, a large population base with a diverse disease spectrum, he added. “While it is definitely an opportunity for India, we should be extremely careful to ensure that we do no harm,” Prof. Thyagarajan explained. It was in this context that an orientation on the ethics governing bio medical research would be timely.

SRU also hopes to emerge as a CITI centre of excellence, taking the training to other medical and research institutions. Paul Braunschweiger, director, Office of Research Education, University of Miami, said most funding for scientific research is being supported by public funding by the government. Therefore, without public trust, there will be no research on public health and consequently, no prosperity. Stressing on didactic training on ethics for the entire research team, he said that the CITI programme’s online modules would provide high quality of research ethics education.

V.Kumaraswami, director, Tuberculosis Research Centre and National Institute of Epidemiology, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) institutions, said the ICMR has tried to address the issues relating to medical research as early as in the 1980’s. A more formal guide was published in 2000 and it was followed up by a revised set of guidelines in 2006. These guidelines govern social sciences research, stem cell research and animal research.

The ICMR was also interested in capacity building at all levels for medical research in partnership with the NIH. There was also a partnership with the Indira Gandhi National Open University for distance learning modules for ethics, he added.

V.K.Subburaj, Principal Secretary, Health, said the State government and its research institutions would be keen on participating in such training programmes for medical research ethics. S.Thanikachalam, chairman and director, Cardiac Care Centre, SRU, released the ethics education material on the occasion.

Lift up a rock and another snake comes slithering out from the ongoing University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) scandal, now riding as  “Climategate”.

Obama Science Czar John Holdren is directly involved in CRU’s unfolding Climategate scandal.  In fact, according to files released by a CEU hacker or whistleblower, Holdren is involved in what Canada Free Press (CFP) columnist Canadian climatologist Dr. Tim Ball terms “a truculent and nasty manner that provides a brief demonstration of his lack of understanding, commitment on faith and willingness to ridicule and bully people”.

“The files contain so much material that it is going to take some time to put it all in context,” says Ball.  “However, enough is already known to underscore their explosive nature.  It is already clear the entire claims and positions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are based on falsified manipulated material and is therefore completely compromised.

“The fallout will be extensive as material continues to emerge.  Reputations of the scientists involved are already destroyed, however fringe players will continue to be identified and their reputations destroyed or sullied.”

While the mainstream media is bending into pretzels to keep the scandal under the rug, Climategate is already the biggest scientific scandal in history because of the global policy implications.

In 2006, just as global cooling was beginning to make things uncomfortable for people who believed that manmade CO2 was warming the earth, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran a documentary that was meant to bring an increasingly skeptical public back on board with the idea of manmade global warming. Airing on The Fifth Estate, an influential and respected investigative journalism program, “The Denial Machine” attempted to throw mud at any scientist who dared to question the so-called ‘consensus’ on manmade global warming by implying all such scientists were secretly funded by oil companies.

As the recent exposure of the UK’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) and its decidedly unscientific research demonstrates, the truth is almost exactly the opposite. Rather than a vast, oil company-funded conspiracy, skepticism about climate fearmongering appears to have been quite correct: the CRU’s bluster was hiding the fact that even they couldn’t understand their own climate models or data. However, as their internal documents show, they were being well-funded for making up scare stories about the CO2-induced end of the world. This was part of a process where public grants would routinely go to the researcher with the most dire predictions about the ravages of global warming. Call it The Alarmist Machine.

The archive of emails and documents leaked out from behind the academic Berlin wall of the  highly-secretive CRU sheds light on the vast sums of money these researchers were playing with. As this hacked spreadsheet demonstrates CRU Director Phil Jones himself received a mind-boggling 22 million dollars in grants for his work over the past 20 years. Sadly, the leaked data also shows just how willing these scientists were to lie and cheat in the pursuit of those funds.

One of the most outrageous emails (1056478635) features one CRU scientist openly advising a colleague to cook the books from their last research grant in order to receive more money from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration):

“Ninh

NOAA want to give us more money for the El Nino work with IGCN.

How much do we have left from the last budget? I reckon most has been spent but we need to show some left to cover the costs of the trip Roger didn’t make and also the fees/equipment/computer money we haven’t spent otherwise NOAA will be suspicious. Politically this money may have to go through Simon’s institute but there overhead rate is high so maybe not!

The contempt shown for the taxpayers who are funding and supporting these research efforts through institutions like the NOAA is appalling. Certainly any researchers who are found to have participated in such duplicity should never receive another cent of taxpayer money again.

But the chicanery does not end there. In a well-researched article on American Thinker, Marc Sheppard points out that while the alarmists imply that the skeptics are being secretly funded, it is in fact the climate scientists who are being funded by the energy companies. The fact that CRU members received significant funding from renewable energy companies, however, and not Big Oil, presumably puts their motives beyond reproach.

Of course, this is not to say that these practices are confined to a few ‘bad apples’ in the scientific community. As skeptical scientists have been pointing out for years, scientific studies about doomsdays and catastrophes—no matter how unlikely the predictions or how shakey the underlying assumptions—tend to get greater funding and grant money than studies that show there is no such disaster on the horizon. This is the inherent bias toward alarmist science and the inherent danger of The Alarmist Machine: not that there is some vast, secret conspiracy funding these alarmist scientists, but that this is a natural and predictable result of the funding process itself. Even rational people can be stampeded into throwing money hand over fist at a team of scientists who are promising to save the world from disaster, especially when those rational people are blatantly misled by an unquestioning media that unproblematically reports on highly problematic science. And all the while the scientific economy is shifted until the entire process becomes one of scientists competing to come up with the most panic-inducing findings.

As someone who spent his entire scientific career fighting the alarmists—first the ones who were whipping up hysteria over the coming ice age and then the ones (sometimes  the same ones) who were whipping up hysteria over global warming—Dr. Tim Ball is no stranger to the “Denial Machine” smear. In fact, he was one of the scientists singled out in the CBC documentary. He doesn’t tow the global warming line, therefore he must be funded by Big Oil. It doesn’t seem to bother the producers of the documentary that they offer not one shred of evidence for that assertion: the logic of the situation demands it, so it must be true.

For someone who supposedly receives secret backdoor money from the Exxon bigwigs, Dr. Ball lives a remarkably low-key life. When I met him for an interview in Victoria earlier this year, he was neither lighting cigars with Big Oil-supplied $100 bills nor driving a gas-guzzling SUV. Instead he was on foot and he took me on a walking tour of the beautiful B.C. capital, regaling me with stories about the town’s history and demonstrating a genuine enthusiasm for the local tradition and culture of his adopted hometown. We passed several hours talking about the history and philosophy of science, and what strikes one about him when engaged in such a conversation is that he has read, researched, and retained a voluminous amount of material, not just on his specialty of climatology, but of scientific history generally. It is not surprise, then, that  his take on the climategate scandal is one of the most thoughtful (and damning) yet:

It is still too early to say what the ultimate fallout from this scandal will be, but unless the scientists who have been implicated in this stop dismissing all criticism as out of context and start addressing the real issues raised in these documents, the backlash is likely to be massive. And as Dr. Ball points out, that backlash (rightly or wrongly) will not be merely directed at this group of researchers, but on the very scientific processes and institutions that they have so shamefully abused. From their private expressions of doubt over science that they publicly touted as unassailable to their use of data that they themselves did not seem to understand to their collusion to keep skeptics out of the peer reviewed literature, how can the public simply put blind faith in blanket statements about ’scientific consensus’ and ‘listening to the experts’ again, especially when there are literally trillions of dollars hinging on the science skewing towards the alarmists?

“The Denial Machine” ends with the words: “Not everything in life is about politics.” If only that were the case.
