You know, I don’t really know what to say about this week’s episode. I enjoyed it, and

You know, I don’t really know what to say about this week’s episode. I enjoyed it, and I felt it did advance the plot, but I don’t know where the writers are going with this. Cavil has Hera, and even though Boomer got attached to the kid she has still not taken any independent action to protect her, stop Cavil, or follow her own desires. Is this evidence that Boomer is still just an automaton, programmed for specific tasks the way she was when she shot Adama? Or is it just evidence that she is spineless and won’t stand up to Cavil?

Caprica 6 and Roslyn are dreaming about the opera house again. I expected that since Caprica lost the baby, but we still don’t know why Roslyn is able to share visions with Cylons or what the visions are about. We haven’t even had any new visions to dissect. I did read an interesting opinion posted in the comments at Show Me Scifi, that Roslyn is able to share the visions because of Baltar injecting her with Hera’s blood a few seasons back when she was dying the first time. If that is the case, would anyone injected with Cylon blood be able to see Cylon projections and share visions? And why would just having a bit of their blood change a human’s perception? Of course, Show Me Scifi thinks everyone is a Cylon, and if he is right then they all have the innate ability to see projections, they just need to uncover it.

And I’m still confused about Starbuck. Baltar confirmed that she did die, by DNA matching necrotic tissue off her tags to Starbuck, and he said she is not a Cylon, so we can presume he dusted off the old Cylon detector (which I believe did work) and Starbuck came up negative. But that still leaves us wondering what the frak she is. She could still be a hybrid – that is my best bet – but could she be something else altogether? I have heard theories about her being an incarnation of one of the gods of Kobol. And there is still this master planner out there manipulating things, which may be the One True God. Could Starbuck be that entity, or an incarnation of it? Or a creation of it, sent to frak with everybody else’s heads? Who knows.

At this point, I’m getting mildly irritated with the way the wrap up is dragging on. On the other hand, they are clearly setting things up for the final episode, and if it is done properly, I am sure I will feel foolish for ever having doubted the brilliance of the writers or their plan. So here’s hoping they do it right.

And back on track! While this week did not provide the answers many of us were hoping for, it did move the show forward instead of just wallowing in drama/melodrama like last week. We still don’t know exactly what Starbuck is, but her father – who disappeared when she was a child – taught her to play the song that the Five recognize from Earth, the one that woke four of them up. All Along the Watchtower was the name I think. I know Hera wrote the notes for her (and I thought it was very interesting that Ellen’s answer for that was that something is manipulating all of them, presumably the One True God who Ellen also believes set up the show at the Temple of the Five) but Starbuck already knew the song and just needed help remembering. And Starbuck now has a head character in the form of nameless piano player/pseudodad. Personally, I think this supports the theory that she is a human/cylon hybrid, child of one of the Five (I really hope not Anders…talk about gross) or of #7 Daniel.

Now, about Boomer. That conniving frakking toaster should be shot on sight! She betrayed Tyrol AGAIN, this time after seducing him into a fantasy of a normal life with the house and kid and everything. Then she beat the crap out of Athena, tied her up in a closet, and frakked Helo in front of her! THEN she kidnapped Hera, drugged her, stuffed her in a storage crate, and jumped away with her! Not to mention that she destroyed a hunk of Galactica in the process! Any one would be worth a bullet in the head, but all three? Being shot on sight is probably too kind.

Also, while I agree that Cavil/John must have set all this up from the start, why does he want Hera? He doesn’t want to be humanized. He wants an all machine Cylon nation with him in charge. Hera represents the hope for a biological future, a true blend of cylon and human – exactly what he has been railing against. Has the loss of the resurrection hub changed his mind? Doubtful. My guess is he thinks he can use Hera, though I have no idea to what purpose.

So the mystery continues, and once again I am left in agony, waiting for next week to arrive.

“Someone to Watch Over Me,” the seventeenth episode of season 4 of the SciFi Channel

“Someone to Watch Over Me,” the seventeenth episode of season 4 of the SciFi Channel’s television show Battlestar Galactica, first aired Friday, February 27, 2009.

Plot Synopsis

Kara befriends a piano player who reminds her of her father. She also receives a mysterious drawing from young Hera Agathon.

“Boomer” faces punishment for her support of Cavil in the Cylon civil war. She reconnects with Chief Tyrol and shares her visions of a peaceful life on Picon. However, her life on Galactica is much less tranquil.

Initial Reaction

Once again this show amazes me. I would be hard pressed to choose between Battlestar Galactica and ABC’s Lost as my favorite television show. With every episode, they stay true to the characters they have built up from season 1, and follow their descent into the despair that accompanies the threat of humanity’s extinction.

In-Depth Discussion

With only four episodes to go until the end of the entire series, this episode served to set the stage for the final events to come, and continued to explore the themes of loss and despair that have permeated Battlestar Galactica from day one. In the opening sequence, we see Kara “Starbuck” Thrace addressing her squadron of pilots, reciting a speech she has obviously given numerous times before. You can sense her hopelessness throughout a montage of clips, showing her preparing for another day, memorizing the speech. This sequence was among the best in the entire series, and really made the audience connect with the pain she is going through.

I have long suspected that she is a cylon, and tonight’s episode seemed to confirm that she is at least half cylon. I suspect that her father was in fact Daniel, the “boxed” cylon that was referred to in last week’s episode. Half cylons, or “hybrids,” have been shown numerous times throughout the series to be able to communicate with some higher intelligence. Tonight’s prime example was the drawing Hera gave to Starbuck, which turned out to be notes for her to play. Starbuck has been fortold to be the “harbinger of humanity’s doom,” so I’m curious as to where her journey is going to take her in these last three episodes to come.

Boomer yet again proves to be a conniving and manipulative piece of work. I cannot believe she did the things she did tonight. Once again, hapiness has been dangled in front of Chief Tyrol, only to be ripped away at the last moment. I’m positive that her actions will result in a “final showdown” between the last vestiges of humanity and cylon rebels against the rest of Cavil’s cylon army, and it will be epic.

Casual Observations

The song Starbuck discovered, the one that has been echoing in the Final Five’s heads, sounds incredibly wicked. I would love to have a copy of it.

Is President Roslin dead? I wouldn’t be surprised if she were. Admiral Adama is going to lose his mind if this is the case.

Cylon Projection is something I wish I could do.

That was a mighty big hole that was blown in Galactica’s side. Things are looking pretty grim for humans.

I was actually a little disappointed with this week’s episode. It was interesting and all, but at this stage of the game, I want more than interesting. I want answers, and this episode didn’t deliver.

I still don’t know what is up with Starbuck – although I’m liking the half Cylon child of Daniel idea that has been floating around out there more and more. I still don’t know if the fleet is going to find a home, or if they plan to just flat around a dead Earth until they all starve. I still don’t know what is up with the opera house or why Roslin was having visions shared with Cylons. And I hadn’t made the connection that the visions stopped when Caprica 6 got pregnant, but since it was pointed out, does that mean they will start again since the baby died? I also don’t know why Baltar has a 6 in his head (and since they brought it back up, I certainly hope they’ll resolve that question – I have been wondering about that for 5 seasons now).

Speaking of the 6 in Baltar’s head – she is TROUBLE. Always has been. Giving those sheep bigger guns is more likely to get them killed than…well, almost every other course of action I can think of. And I’m really getting tired of Baltar’s scheming. What does he hope to accomplish at this point?

And on the topic of trouble, the Ellen we all know and love to hate was back and vindictive as ever. I think she isn’t a bad person, she is just bad for (and around) Tigh. I can understand her being jealous, especially since she and Tigh were never able to conceive. But to blame Tigh for sleeping with one of their children when he didn’t know they created her is hypocritical since she slept with Cavil too. And to put Caprica 6 under that kind of stress, leading to her losing the baby – well, that was just low.

Another good episode this week. It was not as intense as last week since no one shot or got shot at and I wasn’t worried about anyone dying, but it had a quiet drama that made me really pay attention. The scene with Ellen showing up on Cavil’s base ship and Cavil knowing all about her was just crazy. When I stop to consider all the things he did, knowing that he knew who the Final 5 were while he did them (torturing Tigh, counseling Tyrol, and screwing Ellen while manipulating her into betraying Tigh are among the worst), I can only conclude his is the ultimate teenage rebellion gone bad story. I mean, he did all this – and don’t forget he was the one who deprived them of their memories in the first place, positioning them in just the right places for him to manipulate and torment them – just to get back at his parents?!?!? And I think when the other models find out he knew about the Final 5 the whole time, he might be in a bit of trouble.

The scenes with Anders telling the others what he remembers about their past were riveting. Sadly, we did not find out why they came to Earth or where they can find a new home. We did find out about #7, which has been bugging me since last season. But apparently even the 5 don’t know what is up with Starbuck resurrecting. Is she Cylon? Is she something altogether new? Is she a mutant human who is able to resurrect? With only 5 episodes to go, I’m starting to worry that not all of my questions will be answered.

Hello and welcome!

Wszystko zaczyna się od słów “The Cylons were created by man” i widoku stacji “Rozejm” gdzieś we wszechświecie.

Well done!

A przede wszystkim – przeżyć przygodę.

Dismissed.

PS. I tak, jestem pierdolnięty. Dodatkowo jestem zaś wkurzony, ponieważ dzisiaj na naszym niebie gości kometa, a ja nie mogę nawet popatrzeć na jej warkocze (Dwa, jeden jonowy powstały na skutek wiatru słonecznego, drugi “konwencjonalny”), ponieważ “niebo się wzięło i zachmurzyło”. Trudno, może kiedyś. Może jutro.

Wow. Frakkin’ wow. (Warning – this is a rabbit trail post, and there are plenty of spoilers if you didn’t watch the latest episode. My mind is reeling, I just finished watching Galactica and walked straight to the computer. So I’m doing a very slightly organized stream of consciousness thing here.)

I wonder what the new count of humans remaining alive will be. I’m surprised how few people actually died in this episode considering all the shooting. The Quorum, of course. No doubt now about Zarek’s true colors. Maybe Sam, although it’s hard to tell. And if he does die, will he be reborn (rebooted?) on Earth? Apparently there is a resurrection facility of some kind there because in the trailer for next week, Ellen pops up again. And she ‘knows the truth’. I wonder which truth that might be. And what will she think about Tigh having a baby with Caprica 6? She really did seem to love him. She just had a screwed up way of showing it. Zarek and Gaeta looked pretty definitely dead there at the end, too. I was glad Gaeta made the choice he did at the end. I knew he would after Zarek had the Quorum killed. And now that Roslin is back in the game and the Quorum is wiped out, what is the fleet going to do about a government? It would be terrible, but not altogether surprising, if they ‘delayed’ electing a new Quorum so Roslin and Adama could get the Cylon FTLs installed. And then, who knows? Maybe they won’t need a Quorum at all. Those pesky bureaucrats just get in the way anyway. Ooh, I almost forgot about Starbuck coming back from the dead on Earth. If she is actually human, does that mean that all the humans killed in the mutiny could potentially come back as well? Her being a regular old human is a pretty big if, though.

Yep, that’s all I’ve got for right now. As always, I can’t wait ’til next week!

Terminator will be back from its mid-season break at 8pm and Dollhouse will premire right after it. Then at ten BSG is on. So like ALL scifi fans should be tuning in for three hours of scifi bliss! Then for me its BWE then Letterman. Yup my fridays nights are spent in front of a tv, unless I’m at Mark’s house, in front of his tv.
Here’s a neat promo for TSCC and Dollhouse:

Och egentligen, who could blame them?

“Anathem” hoppade direkt in på New York Times Best-sellers List.

I know, I know, I took my time posting on this week’s episode. Sorry.

On the whole, this episode was not nearly as dramatic or intense as last week’s, but it did a LOT of set up. Roslin off her meds, Roslin and Adama’s relationship, Gaeta going off the chain and starting a mutiny, Zarek plotting political intrigues and starting a mutiny, questions about what Starbuck is exactly, what is going to happen to the Cylons (both the Five and the rebels), and of course, is humanity going to find a planet to settle on before they run out of food and fuel…all things that need to be addressed. Oh, and Nicky not being half Cylon after all. I always wondered why nobody talked about him when it was such a big deal for Athena to have a half Cylon baby (future of both races and all), and now I know. Which leads me down the rabbit trail to…what is going on with Hera? Did she just drop out of the picture when Athena killed the Six Hera had been dreaming about? And what is the deal with the Opera House? Is Roslin still having dreams about it?

I didn’t feel we got any answers this time around but I definitely see the shape of answers looming up ahead – even if they are fuzzy and out of focus right now.

Can’t wait ’til next week.

Last Friday I had to join all the other fans and watch “BattleStar Gallactica” at it’s normal scheduled airing time on the SciFi Channel. Down to the final 10 episodes, I now have to wait a week to get my next fix. I’m not use to this, you see I’ve only recently discovered this gem of television. One of the best written shows I’ve ever seen, even better then “The Wire,” “Gallactica” blends fantasy with issues of religion, politics and human psychology. It’s nearly an 80-hour, ever-evolving mythology about the few survivors of a nuclear genocide wandering the universe in search of sanctuary. Heads up, if you haven’t seen the series you may not want to watch the YouTube recap attached to this blog.

Just like Steve Erickson writes in the January 2009 issue of Los Angeles magazine, I discovered the series this summer. My friend Stefan Rhys had the mini-series and the first three seasons on DVD. Once I started watching, I was hooked, sometimes watching 4 or 5 episodes at one time. I couldn’t believe how good it was, with such a brilliant cast and beautiful women. What the “frack” had I been thinking? Even though many had raved about the show, I couldn’t get past the original ’70s cheesy show produced by Glen A. Larson and starring the late Lorne Greene. I also don’t usually like science fiction but like Erickson writes, “Galactica is that thing that always seemed possible in science fiction but for whatever reason hasn’t been: an adult drama, built around adult relationships, that happens to be set in a science fiction context.”

It might have been Glen A. Larson’s attachment to the series that stopped me from watching. I had never been a big fan of his television shows, (Knight Rider, The Fall Guy, Magnum P.I.) but back around 1997, I was hired as the Assistant Director on a syndicated television show, conceived by Larson, entitled “Night Man,” based on the comic book character. Matt McColm played Johnny Domino, the misunderstood musician who battled crime as Night Man with a limited amount of super power. He also drove a really cool car. We had a lot of fun making the series in San Diego and I was introduced to many of the Assistant Directors that I still work with today, including on shows like “24” and a few feature films. I also assisted for the first time, one of my favorite directors to work with, Rob Spera. The problem was the cheesy visual effects and the writing and continuity. I remember in one episode Johnny’s father, played by Earl Holliman, was eating a steak, even though in previous episodes his character had been established as a vegetarian. Or when Michael Woods, who played Lt. Dann, was handed rewrites after we had shot the scene. Funny memories now, but not at the time. The next year it didn’t matter because Larsen took the whole production up to Canada to save a buck and we were unemployed. The show was cancelled the following year. On a side note, another former Glen Larsen television show, “Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century,” is being created as a 20 webisode series to premiere in 2010, as reported in Fan Cinema Today.

“Battlestar Gallactica” has never won a major Emmy, but it is no “Night Man.” The premise is something we’ve seen dozens of times before, “Man has created robots (in this case Cylons) and the robots get smart enough that they start to be like humans and seek revenge,” but this show puts to question what it even means to be human, to have emotions. It ties myth and imagination to the political issues of our times. As Erickson writes, “exposing humanity at its wisest and most ruthless, its most compassionate and murderous.” Now that’s the kind of television I’d like to be a part of, but for now I’ll enjoy the genius of Ronald D. Moore each Friday night. For those who haven’t seen it, start with the mini-series on DVD and just try to stop, I’m warning you. There’s nothing else like it on television, well, except maybe “Lost.” Doesn’t that start again this Wednesday? Oh man, how am I ever going to get any work done?

Wow. I did not see that coming. Well, some of it I did – like Starbuck finding her own body on Earth (I mean, she flew into that weird storm mandala thing, then just showed back up 2 months later with no memory of being gone that long? Please. Of course, that doesn’t mean I have any idea of what she actually is if she isn’t a Cylon…or is she?) And Ellen as the 5 th Cylon. I didn’t know it would be her, but it didn’t surprise me either.

A couple of things did surprise me, mainly that the final five were originally from Earth and, oh yeah, that the 13th tribe were Cylons! Totally didn’t see that coming. Different Cylons, but still. So humans built the Cylons, but there were Cylons 2000 years ago too, and they were around long enough to build a planet wide civilization, then be wiped out by nukes. Did humans nuke them? Did they nuke themselves? Why are there only 5 of them left from a whole planet full?

And Dee’s suicide was downright shocking. Frak me.

I don’t know if I can wait another whole week…No choice…I’ll cope…<sob>

Oh, and IO9 – where did the running over thing come from? Mine didn’t, and I’m pretty sure I don’t have a magic DVR or anything.

Passing along this warning from IO9 about Battlestar Galactica–

Don’t just set your DVR as usual! Apparently the beginning of the end comes with 3 1/2 extra minutes. That’s right, according to IO9 (they don’t say where they got the info) this week’s episode of BSG, the first one of the show’s final (half) season, will run long. So if you DVR it, you will miss those last minutes where the big revelation always hides. That has happened to me so many times, especially with Heroes–it always seems to run about a minute past where my DVR stops recording. It is maddening!

Anyway, consider yourselves warned.

Children Of The Grave: (Spooked TV) Produced and Directed by Philip Adrian Booth and Christopher Saint Booth (The Booth Brothers) NOW ON DVD. This the highly-anticipated follow-up to the Booth Brothers 2006 documentary Spooked: The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium. This haunted Indie film is one of the finest that I have seen in many years. And so like its predecessor this film delivers more non-stop chills from the very first frame. Many thought the Booth’s could not top Spooked The Ghosts Of Waverly Hills Sanatorium their first paranormal documentary outing, but in truth they have surely surpassed it. Many herald The Booths work as a new breed of great paranormal TV to explore. The Booth’s unique camera perspective and fantastic direction, editing and score are part of the haunted magical mind’s eye that they possess collectively. It is “The Must See” of all that is haunted! More then just a cut above the rest it sets a new standard that many will find hard to reach. This movie is now what I would call a Paranormal Classic Indie Film! WARNING: GHOST CHILDREN AT PLAY. Now On DVD

I’ve tried to watch Scifi Channel’s new show Sanctuary. Really, I’ve tried. After the first, extra long episode I thought, “I’ll bet this is like Eureka, and it gets so much better after this.” And that kept me onto the second episode, after which I thought, “I’m sure it will get better.” Five minutes into the third, I had to give up entirely.

With Battlestar Galactica edging into its final season, I thought that Scifi would funnel some spare money into its new series to keep at least some of its BSG viewing base. Plus, with the cancellation of the Dresden Files and Painkiller Jane, I had at least hoped that Scifi would start throwing more emphasis on its new series, which is becoming one of very few. I assumed that these factors, combined with an intriguing if not fascinating concept, would create a great show.

But something seems to have been lost along the way. The interesting concept — a “sanctuary” for the abnormal, supernatural creatures of the world — is undermined by uninspired writing and overwritten character types. With one obviously Time Lord-influenced matronly woman, a Buffy Summers ripoff as her daughter, and an Gwen Cooper-esque guy annoyingly reminiscent of Ugly Betty’s Henry as the three main characters, I continually found myself rooting for the villains because they were at least interesting.

Needless to say, neither the acting or the special effects can bring up the writing. With characters so weak I almost want to say that no actor could make the show interesting; and, though advertised openly as the first show to use almost entirely green screen sets, this was not something to be proud of.

I wanted to like Sanctuary — really, I did — but Scifi should have put a bit more effort and a bit more money into it. Now we’re left with yet another mediocre show from a group of people who could have done so much better (ref. BSG, Eureka).

Update on midseason tv shows: Monk will return on January 9, 2009 at its usual time 9 pm EST, followed by Psych at 10 pm EST. For Burn Notice, USA network hasn’t released an official date for the 10th episode of 2nd season. I’ll keep an eye on it, but there’s good news: Burn Notice lands its 3rd season! No news on when Eureka will be back on Sci-Fi channel too. I’ll update this post as soon as I find out. *Update: Eureka won’t return this winter, but on Summer, read my post here for more info.

What happened to Doctor Who? Apparently, it was a casualty in the dustup between BBC and the Sci Fi

What happened to Doctor Who?

Apparently, it was a casualty in the dustup between BBC and the Sci Fi Channel.

According to the official site http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/, Doctor Who is putting out a Christmas special this year, and plans 4 more specials throughout the year in 2009. The series will return in 2010. But will we see it here in America? The answer is no, at least for the Christmas special. SciFi is not airing it, and in fact has not mentioned that it exists, as far as I can tell from looking on their site http://www.scifi.com/doctorwho/. It remains to be seen whther they will air the other specials in 2009, or even the new season in 2010 (which, by the way, will have a new actor playing the Doctor – David Tennant is done after 2009).

Perhaps those with truly excessive amounts of cable channels will be able to watch it on BBC, or the British may take pity on us and show it on BBC America. I hope so, as it is one of my favorite science fiction shows EVER. Yes, the science is murky at best and often (almost always) explained away as advanced alien technology, but it is based on science all the same. And the acting is great, the writing snappy, and it has that quirky British sense of humor that I am a fan of. (Check out the moving Saving Grace for another of my favorite British comedies). What else could a person hope for in sci fi television?

So I will continue to look for the blue police box, and hope the SciFi Channel removes it’s head from whereever it has stuck it and brings back the Doctor!
