i could be a responsible blogging-type person and put each note in its own entry but in the interest of getting these notes from queue to post, i’m just putting them all together here. i did finally create a watermark (and use it!) on a few of these. and i caved and bought the edge punch du jour: Fiskars Upper Crest punch. i love the shape of the curly bracket (also known as a brace)! and it was 45% off!

this is today’s note. last night was our parent-teacher conference. the first half of the conference was student-led where she got to show us papers she was proud of and read a letter she wrote detailing things she loves about 5th grade, things she’s learned and things she feels she needs to improve on. must brag a little here: the two math papers she shared were 106%-ers…one a worksheet and one a chapter test! i’m sure the lunch notes have something to do with it!

the sad thing (or happy?) is that she has started buying her lunches some days. she still wants a note every day but for now they can be no larger than 2.25 sq and not too layered or they won’t fit in her coin purse. that makes things a little easier for days i’m short on time, i guess. thanks for stopping by!

‘Scooby’ teria latido ao ser confrontado com suspeito em tribunal.
Segundo juiz, é a 1ª vez na história que cão ‘depõe’ como testemunha.

A Justiça francesa convocou um cachorro para depor como testemunha na investigação da morte de um morador de Paris. Batizado de ‘Scooby’, o cão será chamado ao tribunal e confrontado com os suspeitos de terem matado seu dono, encontrado morto em um apartamento no centro da capital francesa.

Inicialmente, a polícia acreditava que a morte do homem de 59 anos se tratava de um suicídio. Mas, após a insistência da família em investigar as causas da morte, o caso foi levado à Justiça. De acordo com reportagem do jornal britânico ‘Daily Telegraph’, o cão teria ‘latido ferozmente’ durante uma audiência preliminar ao ser colocado em frente a um dos suspeitos do crime.

O juiz Thomas Cassuto deve decidir em breve se há evidências suficientes para levar o suspeito a julgamento. Ele, no entanto, elogiou a ajuda dada por ‘Scooby’ às investigações. “Ele tem um comportamento exemplar”, afirmou. Segundo Cassuto, é a primeira vez na história que um cão participa de um processo judicial como testemunha.

So, after working 3 in a row this week I then had 2 cakes to make for this weekend.  I drug myself out of bed yesterday afternoon (I work nights, ok) and started baking…

First up…cucakes. These little dudes went with the Scooby cake that is to come

It was Kasey’s grandma’s 80th birthday. She told me it was a fall theme but design wise left it up to me. I think it is harder when someone does that. All the pressure of wondering if they will like it! I went with my gut and made something that my grandma would have liked and been proud of (she was the one who tought me everything I know!) Here is how it came out.

I can tell you after all those flowers my hands were about to fall off!! After a long day of baking and decorating it was time to retire the icing bags for the night!

I wish Noah and Joyce a very Happy Birthday. I hope you both enjoy your cakes!

I first knew about it just a few days ago, but the plot was ongoing since early september. Yes, as some of you guys know, the Perdizes Dream’s handicrafted model of Weekend by Babe, Terror is distributed in an illustrated envelope, and since the third or fourth number shipped out, the cover changed to one which is pretty similar to the inaugural, but shows only the original street photograph (taken where Claudio lives indeed), without infos or written/ concrete references (as babe, terror, weekend, etc) we felt unnecessary (we often send an e-mail telling what we’re sending though… but sometimes it doesn’t work). Our label logo, in the same way, is sticked with minimal and abbreviated words (PD#001). Well, we sent a copy to Grant ‘Gumshoe’ Purdum, TinyMIXtapes features editor.

And here it is (on Grant’s blog, The Gumshoe Grove):

“I might just have a Jandek-ian mystery on my hands here. In the mail I received a CD-R — FROM BRAZIL!!!! AWESOME!!!!  — with elaborate hand-made art and a cute little comic about a deserted island pasted-on. Next to the comic is writing in pen: “PD #001.” Obviously this is a new record-label venture, but what do the “P” and the “D” stand for?

On the back of the CD sleeve are two words. At first, I thought the two words were “Saturday Giant,” and there is, indeed, a band called The Saturday Giant on MySpace … that hasn’t updated its profile since May … that doesn’t sound like the material on this CD-R …”

I bought 3 of these for my 3 girls. This is excellent!!!. Keeps cold, and is made out of stainless steel. It has double compartment because you don’n feel the bottle cold at any time. It can take falls easy.

There is a major hassle getting these clean. I wash these in the dishwasher too, they are certainly a nuisance to disassemble and position properly in the dishwasher, but there isn’t anything out there that isn’t. Once washed, the metal containers go into the freezer so that it is ready for drinks in the morning. The caveat with this method is that as the liquid starts to warm up a bit during the day, pressure builds and liquid can shoot out if you open the lid too quickly…minor issue.

The bottom half of the straw is polypropylene, the sippy part is silicone and there is a silicone ring sealing the lid to the container. All these parts need to be disassembled gently for cleaning. If you yank and pull, the silicone straw can rip, its happened to me once, but I’ve learned to twist rather than yank. As for the general durability of the straw? Its fine. You just have to watch your kids and explain to them that its not a good idea to chew on things that isn’t food and then replace the straws as soon as they show teeth marks. My kids use to chew the heck out of the playtex straw sippy cups too, but they are older now and we no longer have this issue.

When assembling the parts together, you must be sure to line the sipping straw to the front where the lid clamps down, this will also cover the air pressure release hole so that nothing leaks. Otherwise it will leak, but once positioned, it isn’t likely to budge out of position. So just be careful to position it properly. Our containers never leak once I figured this out.

Sometimes I’ll add a couple of ice cubes to their milk or drinks to keep it extra cold. Lately I started bagging their containers in the NYBUILT neoprene bags for the 1 liter size bottles before putting into their insulated lunch bags. It keeps everything extra cold for a long time. This way if my kids don’t finish their milk at lunch, they can still sip cold milk after school. Otherwise the milk will warm up if the container is half empty.

The straws do become stained and they do wear out after repeated use. I purchase extra sets directly from Thermos for a dollar a set. This includes the top and bottom portion of the straw. I’ll purchase a half dozen at a time and start fresh every school year.

Btw, keep the straws away from the dishwasher if you are cleaning anything with tomato sauce, the tomato pigments are highly attracted to plastic and can stain the insides of the straws.

If you are trying to avoid using bpa plastic products out there to transport drinks, you can’t go wrong with these. I’ve purchased 7 of these over the last 4 years and use it daily for my kid’s milk for school.

It sounds crazy that I go through this daily so my kids can take milk to school, especially since the school provides milk practically for free, and I can afford to buy the tetra pak milks.

But I am very particular. I insist on Organic, Grass Pastured, non UHT, Whole milk. Since my kids drink so much milk, its the best I can do for them and there is no other way for me to provide it without these containers. To try and avoid the daily hassle of disassembling and cleaning —- I’ve looked high and low for alternatives –but this is it.

We bought this stainless steel bottle hoping to avoid plastic. However, we were disappointed because it leaks. When the bottle is turned upside down, the liquid comes out the straw on top. Even when the lid is closed, it evidently doesn’t clamp down tightly on the straw so the liquid then spills into the lid — then it leaks out of the closed lid and into my son’s lunchbox.

We wanted to find a straw bottle that does not have BPA. We decided to give FUNtainer a try. We went ahead and bought four of them.

First couple of days were fine, but on the third day, our toddler bit down on the straw, cutting it. Thank goodness we were there to pull the straw bits out of her mouth.

This is the first time anything like this has happened. Is the straw weaker than those that we have used in the past? Not sure, but possibly. The other day, I tried to pull the top straw piece out, and it split in half.

Anyways, please be watchful… The straw is easily broken into pieces, and when it does separate, it is a possible chocking hazard.

I think this story will turn into a very funny movie one day. I’m willing to bet my bank’s money on it. Here’s how it got reported on the news:

“The FBI in Denver is on the lookout for a serial bank robber dubbed the ‘Shaggy Bandit’ for his resemblance to cartoon canine Scooby-Doo’s human sidekick…According to the FBI, the Shaggy Bandit enters a bank, approaches a teller and demands money. He displays a backpack and generally gets the money (!) and is out the door before any customers even know what is happening.”

He generally gets the money?? Just by asking? Never mind that demanding money from your bank, technically speaking, isn’t a robbery. I thought the point of calling it a robbery is that it is forced. The guy enters the bank, doesn’t carry a weapon nor does he display one. He demands money as in “Scooby-Doo me your money” or who knows what the magic words are, and just like that he gets it!?

J u s t – l i k e – t h a t? Awesome!

Some people might wonder if this is possible. It’s true our government spent billions to bail out the banks. With so much money sitting around in the vaults, this guy might be showing us the fastest way to get it back into the economy.

It wouldn’t surprise me if our banks are so flooded with taxpayers’ money and so confused what to do with it, they are simply giving it away.

This guy is either too brilliant or working for Sacha Cohen on Borat’s sequel and why not? a book called “How to ask your bank to give you money and generally get it..’
