Go green electric bicycle, that’s right we should all be considering an alternate source of transportation, at least for our short commutes.
• Why = It is a lot cheaper than having to deal with the constant adjustment of gas prices of today, who can afford it?

• Why = Why not electric power it’s cleaner and a lot cheaper than gas.

• Why = Why not do our share to help with global warming and a cleaner environment.

• Why = Because it’s a fun way to get around save money and save the environment.

We can all start to save money with an  electric bicycle or if you want something with a little more power try an electric moped they come in all shapes and sizes I even saw an electric chopper produced by the guys at Orange County Choppers recently, everybody seems to be jumping on the band wagon how about you.

Auf nach Railey und ein bisschen auf den Spuren von James Bond wandeln. Aber zurück zum Anfang. Der Holländer Peter und seine mylove hatten mir also ein Hotel gebucht- schön gelegen und mit Spa. Auf eine Massage hatte ich mich nämlich seit 3 Tagen – aber spätestens seit meiner Mangroventour - wirklich gefreut.

Holländer Peter war also mit seiner mylove Thaifrau verheiratetet. Hat zwei Töchter Jasmine (4) und Alisa (2) – wohnt seit 4 Jahren auf Krabi und vermisst manchmal die Heimat. Ist man Holländer, sollte man auf jeden Fall im Reisebüro am Busbahnhof von Krabi vorbeischauen. Er und seine Frau freuen sich.

Die Frage, ob Scooter fahren könne (wir würden wohl dazu Moped, Mofa oder ne 80ziger sagen) musste ich verneinen. Bekam aber eine Geschichte erzählt, dass er hier in Thailand Scooter fahren gelernt hätte und nach einer Woche mit seiner schwangeren Frau verunglückt wäre. Im tut auch heute noch die Schulter und der Ellenbogen davon weh. Seine Frau wüsste ja, wie man sich hinfallen lassen muss, um nicht verletzt zu werden. Ahja… ich bin immer noch nicht ermutigt Scooter fahren zu lernen. 

Dafür vergaß er meine Bitte an einer ATM vorbei zu fahren, brachte mich aber dafür heil zu einem Pier. Nein, ich hatte keine Steine in meinen Koffer gepackt. Aber 20 Kilo wiegen nunmal 20 Kilo und sie werden gefühlt jeden Tag schwerer. Ich liebe meine 4 Rollen. Die ganzen Rucksacktouristen – und davon gibt´s reichlich - tun mir echt leid.

Ein Ticket nach Railey zu bekommen, ist das einfachste der Welt. Man geht einfach an den Schalter und fragt danach. Für 80 Bat bekommt man einen Boot-Transfer. Allerdings keinen, der einem das Gepäckt trägt. Da stand ich also mit meinem 4-Rollen- Koffer und einer großen Handtasche. Nur über Sand und Wasser rollt es sich so schlecht. Es sollte ein Longtail-Boot sein, dass einfach so am Strand halt macht.

Dafür kam mir ein sehr netter Japaner zur Hilfe. Die restlichen Mitfahrer waren zwar Deutsche, aber die hatten damit zu tun, den besten Platz zu sichern. Ich hatte sie echt nicht vermisst. Diese spießigen kleinbürgenlichern Postbeamten, die im Thailandurlaub mal auf dicke Hose machen… Ich gab nicht zu erkennen, dass ich auch aus der Bundesrepublik komme.

Railay Bay

Der Japaner war für eine Woche mal schnell nach Thailand gekommen, um ein bisschen Urlaub zu machen und sich Railey Island anzuschauen. Flog aber morgen schon wieder zurück. Ich bedankte mich sehr herzlich bei ihm und nach einem viel Spaß noch, machte ich mich auf zur Rezeption, um in Railay Bay einzuchecken.

JAPAN – November 26, 2009 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. displayed the new 115cc moped* model “LEXAM” at the Yamaha dealer meeting in Vietnam as a new model to be launched in 2010. However, the length of conventional CVT units designed for scooters was a problem when applying them to mopeds, thus creating the need for a far more compact CVT unit design. Yamaha Motor answered this need by developing the Y.C.A.T. as a core technology featuring a high-elasticity, heat resistant resin drive belt with optimized sheave (pulley) design and an optimized belt-chamber cooling function to create a unit compact enough for the new model that retains the look and feel of a moped.

Well, it’s Friday morning for me; Thanksgiving night if you’re reading back in my homeland. I’ve had a splendid morning – woke up early, talked to my family via the magic of Skype, and watched the Cowboys win. I hope your Thanksgivings were the stuff of legend, punctuated with an endless trail of gravy. But enough rambling. Here are some things I wanna tell you. Let’s do it quick-hit style.

If you’ll please cast your eyes over to the right side of this here blog (beyond Norm’s picture), you dear readers will notice that you now have a little list of categories from which to pick and choose stories. When I first started this little thing, I had no idea what I was going to be doing or writing about or any of that nonsense. Clearly, I still don’t, really. But last weekend I went through all of my past stories and rants and such, and filed each into a category. So there you have it. Wanna only read my self-important stories involving the deathcycle? Now you can! Or perhaps you only stop by for the Engrish – have at it. It’s a small thing, really. But I hope you like it. If I had a nickel for every time I’d said that…

Baby, it’s cold(ish) outside!
Initially, I was going to tell you that despite living in this tropical climate, it finally was kinda feeling like fall (or something resembling fall) here in Kaohsiung. But as I write this, it’s 11:15 am, and it’s currently 84 degrees outside. As my kids say when they’re disgusted, Aye-yuh! This is not fall. This is madness! Well, ok… it is cooler now than it ever was in July or August or September. We haven’t seen a high above 90 in maybe a month. So that’s all well and good. But last week, it was cold. Or again, cold-ish. The highs were still in the upper 70s or low 80s, but the nights were downright cool. Maybe even all the way down in the 60s! Ok ok, that’s not really cold at all, and as a lover of autumn and the like, it’s not much. But, let me tell you this: riding around on a scooter when it’s 50 or 60 can get pretty damn cold. Perhaps I should invest in a full-head helmet; or perhaps some riding gloves; earmuffs? Or maybe I’ll just figure out a way to bottle molten hot lava, stash it in my little under-seat compartment, and give myself a nice little ghetto seat-warmer.

A very Thai Christmas (and New Year (and (30th) birthday))
So as we all know by now, I will not be going back to the States for Christmas. It saddens me, but it’s true. However, as I mentioned in my last post, how often am I gonna be living in Southeast Asia? I need to be taking advantage of all the beauty around me that’s so close, and so cheaply available. And so I’m going to be in Thailand for Christmas and New Years. I’m meeting some friends in Bangkok on the 26th, but I’ll actually be in Thailand on my own for the 22nd-25th. So yeah, I’ll be alone for Christmas day, but I’m actually somewhat excited for that. I can do whatever I choose and go wherever I want. In all likelihood, it’ll involve Thai food, some sort of cocktail, and the beach. This is good.
And then, on the 28th, said friends and I will travel down to Koh Samui for some sort of epic New Year’s party that they have there every year. New Years Eve will also be my 30th birthday. I have no idea what to think about this. But the whole experience should be great, and I’m pretty damn excited. I’ll keep you posted. Also, if you have any ideas/suggestions of places for me to go while in Thailand, please do share them with me. Your support and generosity power my soul.

Taipei for the weekend
Speaking of going places, I’ll be in Taipei for the weekend with some teacher friends from school. I haven’t been there since my first five days in Taiwan. Now that I have a slightly better grasp on this country, I’m pretty excited for the getaway. I’m gonna try to hit up the National Palace Museum on Saturday, and some hot springs on Sunday. You will find out soon enough if I am successful in fulfilling these endeavors. It actually is going to be cold in Taipei. Like, real actual cold. Do they have lava for sale there?

I finally need another haircut…
…but I’m a bit apprehensive. You know why. Wish me luck tonight.

Beautiful Hand-Made Wooden Vespa

The Vespa scooter has a classically appreciable shape. Portuguese craftsman Carlos Alberto managed to fashion one from laminated hardwood. The result is stunningly beautiful.

The Making of Wooden Scooter

The little scooter is based on an original Vespa which had fallen into complete disrepair, but using long-tested woodcraft techniques a flowing new body was constructed for the runabout. The main spine of the bike is fashioned from steam bent and laminated veneers upon which very nicely carved body work hangs. Even the package tray and seat are made from wood. We would have probably gone with a traditional seat, but that’s just cause we’re a bunch of softies like that. Realistically though, we’re betting this Vespa is now quite a few pounds heftier than when it started out, and the original was not known for its swiftness so despite it’s beauty it’s probably kind of a pig in the performance department. Then again, if something looks that good, we’ll give the zero to sixty times a pass.

yummy, I made some awesome food, if I do say so myself. Has anyone tried the knock off Red Lobster Cheddar Bay biscuit recipe? I got one while the getting was good and then wham, gone! My family ate them ALL! Even though my oldest son “Skeeter” complained about “dry turkey and yucky stuffing” he ate it and came back for seconds. And the turkey wasn’t a bit dry. It’s just his way of telling his mom he loves all she does for him. And this is what happened after he ate my crappy food.

My sissy and her hubby were here too, with my niece. She wants me to do it all over again for Christmas, turkey and all. HA. I took yesterday off work, to get what I could prepared and then today finished it off and spiffed up PC. I usually do snacky foods for Christmas. She wants green beans (thanks pioneer woman) and cheddar bay biscuits and turkey and … no way!

Speaking of turkey, when I had my live-in, he did the carving. This year I elected my brother-in-law. I was too busy doing a jazillion other things to notice what he was doing to my masterpiece. After dinner, as I was bringing things back into the kitchen, I started laughing so hard I couldn’t even stop long enough to tell them what was so funny. Do other people actually do this or is it just me? I guess I have never seen the leg bones left ON the bird before.

After sissys family left and while his brother slept (for 2 hours), my youngest, ”Scooter” and I played Wii. I sucked at golf but kicked his arse in bowling and tennis.

He’s giving the pouty look because he had just told me he had to poop. But I wanted a picture!

Unfortunately “B”  and my son’s girlfriend had other family commitments so I didn’t get to see them today.

Time for pie!!!

Scooter won’t let me blog this morning despite the fact that she woke me up at 3a.m. as she does every night/morning just to remind me that I have an hour and a half more to sleep until chow-time. I swear to God if I catch that cat sleeping today I am going to poke her awake every time just so she knows how it feels.

Here is a photo from the State Dinner- apparently photos of Secretary Clinton in attendance are a well-guarded secret because for a day and a half I have been looking for photos and coming up empty. Maybe they will start to trickle out today. Maybe the party crashers brought their camera phones:

This much is known: About 7:15 Tuesday night, a glittering blonde, decked out in a red and gold sari, holding the hand of her black-tuxedoed escort, swept past the camera crews and reporters camped out to catch the red-carpet arrivals for the first state dinner given by President Obama.

“Hey, that’s a Desperate Housewife!” one reporter yelled out, alluding to the TV series named for a collection of them.

In fact, the couple — Michaele Salahi and her husband, Tareq — are Virginians who have been auditioning for a possible role in a different housewives TV franchise: “The Real Housewives of Washington.”

They swept past the camera crews and followed the trail of other bigwigs attending the dinner.

But neither Mr. nor Mrs. Salahi, best known in the Washington area for promoting wine and polo in Virginia, were on the guest list for the event, a fact first reported Wednesday morning on the Washington Post Web site.

A White House official confirmed Wednesday that the Salahis had not been invited nor seated for dinner.

It was not clear Wednesday night how close the Salahis got to Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, or to the guests of honor, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, and his wife, Gursharan Kaur.

Edwin M. Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said Wednesday night that “initial findings identified a Secret Service checkpoint which did not follow proper procedures,” allowing the couple to gain access to the festivities, even though their names were not on the invitation list.

“It is important to note that these individuals went through magnetometers and other levels of security, as did all guests attending the dinner,” Mr. Donovan said in an e-mail message.

He declined to offer details, including what kind of procedures were not followed or whether the couple had been interviewed. He said the investigation was continuing.“The bottom line is that they should not have gotten in,” he said.

Mr. Donovan also said he was unaware of any other examples of this kind of party-crashing at the White House. “I’m not aware of any other incidents like this,” Mr. Donovan said.

The Salahis posted photographs of themselves at the dinner on their Facebook page: “Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!”

As word of the incident spread on Wednesday night, Michaele Salahi’s Facebook page was flooded with comments from friends and acquaintances.

“Glad it was you, and not someone with malicious intent, who tested and beat White House security,” wrote Joe Galietta. “Hopefully the officers who failed to stop you will learn from this.”

Well that’s reassuring to know that we all could have just put on our party duds, made our way through a little metal detector and spent the evening with the POTUS and foreign dignitaries. Me? I’d have skipped the POTUS and made a bee-line for Hillary’s table.

La pasión por las motos, en concreto la Vespa y la Lambreta, junto con la música es lo que más caracteriza tanto a los modds como a los scooterboys. Su lugar de reunión serán los “rallies”, circuitos para las motos. Al igual que su precendente, la generación beat, no cuentan con una ideología vinculada por lo que se podría decir que es una rama del anterior.

Los modds son los primeros grupos con letras críticas hacia el sistema pero su objetivo no es el de cambiar el mundo; “el modd duerme en la cárcel pero es el que duerme en la litera de arriba”.

En cuanto a la estética, los scooterboys se diferencian de los modds en la preocupación por la estética, sobre todo en los chicos y en menor grado las chicas. Este interés hace que los jóvenes pierdan el gusto en el sexo opuesto ya que toda su atención se centraba en la imagen. Sus ingresos se destinaban al placer y poco se dedicaba para el vivir.

Será en esta época cuando se empiece a hacer Pop, pero el gusto de estilo musical sigue centrándose en el modern jazz, el Blues y el Rhythm Blues (género musical derivado del jazz, el gospel y el blues aunque más enérgico que éste último. Aparecen en este momento dos de las discográficas más importantes de la época:

                         Motown: creada por Berry Gordy y situada, en un primero momento, en Detroit se trata de una discográfica en la que pusieron una nota de color artistas como los Jackson 5, las Supremas, Steve Wonder y Michael Jackson entre otros. Creada por Jim Stewart, músico blanco.

                         Stax: creada por Jim Stewart curiosamente un músico de raza blanca con música negra norteamericana dirigida al “oído blanco”. Se trata de una de las discográficas más importantes del mundo en cuanto a música soul. Por ella pasaron artistas de la talla de Rufus Thomas con un continuo éxito en la década de los 60 y 70 y autor de mitos como “Do the funky Chicken”.

De la suma del Rhythm Blues el skiffler nacen grandes grupos de la historia como los Beatles o los Rolling Stones. Este nuevo tipo de música nace en la cuna de EEUU pero se configura en Inglaterra.

Plus de 500 collégiens et lycéens ont été invités à s’essayer au scooter lors d’une journée organisée par la Préfecture de Police de Paris.  Une bonne façon de sensibiliser les jeunes aux accidents causés chaque année par les deux roues.

A la question des policiers : Qui a déjà fait du scooter ? Trois quarts des jeunes présents lors de cette journée lèvent la main. Mais qu’on ne s’y trompe pas : les “frimeurs” sont rapidement repérés par leur façon de tenir la poignée ou de monter sur l’engin. Qu’à celà ne tienne : les policiers de la Préfecture de Paris ont organisé une journée spéciale pour former les 500 jeunes issus de collèges et de lycées d’Ile-de-France à la pratique du scooter. Réunis sur le circuit Carole à Tramblay-en-France, les jeunes conducteurs en herbe ont été sensibilisés aux causes les plus réccurentes dans les accidents impliquant les deux roues.  Sont ainsi incriminés l’alcool, la prise de drogue, et bien sûr la vitesse. Au programme de la journée : freinage, crash tests, de quoi inciter les jeunes à être prudents sur les routes.

Rappelons que pour conduire un véhicule de 50cm3, le Brevet de Sécurité Routière (BSR) est obligatoire pour tout jeune de 14 ans et plus né après le 1er Janvier 1988. Beaucoup de jeunes regrettent néanmoins le coût de cette formation qui revient parfois à près de 270 euros pour 5 heures de formation.

After leaving Korea a couple of weeks ago Adrian and I hopped on a plane and ventured on to Phuket, Thailand. We had no plans upon arrival, with only our first nights stay booked in advance.  I think traveling is a lot more if you have no plans and just go with the flow.  I figure that the people who live there know a lot more about the cool places and areas too see then any travel book could describe.

With much success we found many great places to see and stay.  Thailand is a beautiful country with beautiful people. Everyone is so kind and welcoming.

We stayed at this cute little lodge for the first week.

We rented a scooter each day to explore different areas of the city.  Adrian did a great job of adjusting to driving on the other side of the road.

We found many cool things.  We found this Ginormous Buddha on the top of a mountain.  Ginormous is an understatement, but I can’t think of another word that describes its hugeness.  From anywhere in the city you can se this guy…

He’s a work in progress…it will be cool to see the end result.

One of my fav. things about being in Thailand was the readily available supply of fresh fruit. I LOVE fruit! I got to try so many fruits that I had never eaten before.  And bonus, the fruit is sooo cheap.  Every other day I would stop at the fruit stand and pick up a pineapple, which cost me a big 50 cents.

mmmmm….Fruit!

If you ever have the chance to eat a Mangosteen, do it!  Best exotic fruit ever.

We also used some local transport to get around.  We rented a Long Boat with some friends to taxi us out to an island to so some snorkeling.  These boats are hilarious.  They are super old and are powered by old car engines.

So many colourful fishies to see.

The food in Thailand is so yummy.  They cook with a lot of seasonal fruits and veggies, using different curry spices, coconut milk, fresh basil leaves etc.  We of course ate tons of Pad Thai.  Every place cooks it a bit different, so it was fun to try it in many places to compare.  No I just have to try and make it at home.

It was a fab. trip and I can’t wait to go back.  We only really explored the West Coast of Thailand, so another trip is in order to see the rest of this wonderful place.

So long Thailand, I will miss you, and will be longing for you as the cold Canadian winter approaches.

Un tieši šoreiz puiši ir pārcentušies sevi padarīt par jaunajiem tehno Dead Kennedys, albumā par hitiem var nosaukt tikai 2 dziesmas, varbūt 3. Un no šiem hitiem var izcelt tikai vienu skaņdarbu. I’ve been working with the guys at Kiddimoto Ltd these past few weeks illustrating and designing their new brochure and I’m very happy to see how the finished print job turned out.

The job required new illustrated backgrounds on every spread (8 plus cover front & rear), new photos of all their products (each of which needed to be cut out and a clipping path made) and then an additional A4 separate stock list.

An immensely enjoyable job from start to finish.
