and here we are for this music monday, the last 10 years leading up to my 30th year on the planet earth.  i often wonder what the hell happened to my 20’s?  they seem to have gone by very fast.  things that happened when i was 22 or 23 seem like they occurred last year.  it’s very weird.  i can distinguish between how long ago my childhood was, but this past decade has been a blur, it seems.  i’m going to try and recall what was going on in my life with each video, and see if i can figure out exactly what did happen to my 20’s.

1999.  i was going into my junior year of college following my 20th birthday on july 31st of this year.  that year i worked at temptations cafe in nyack, dated the martha (year 2 of 3), got my first tattoos, was all hardcore, spent the first semester in dunbar with ben & jim and the 2nd i was back in mosely with a room to myself rockin’ the group shower with fetch & the boys, became aware of the sudan via the campaign for religious freedom, my sister got married, i was in good shape for a bit, played some music, attended the cult of ken graves x3 weekly when home & had all the tapes sent to me in college, and i believe it was in my 20th year that i bought the engagement ring for the aforementioned ladyfriend.  only in a place like nyack do 20 year olds feel compelled to get married asap.  oh well, enough memory lane, onto the music.  the best album of ‘99 was mos def’s debut solo effort black on both sides.  and one of my favorite side 1 track 1’s is “fear not of man”, and here it is.

2000.  well, the world didn’t end.  bummer.  i finished my junior year of college, and fast forward to senior year.  got more tattoos, went to a bunch of hardcore shows, kept working at temptations, year 3 of the aforementioned relationship, lived with pdx ben underneath the ruegseggers in a sweet apt, hung out at the marriot 6 (vids will come at some point), played some music, became aware of life altering bands such as whiskeytown, wilco & the smiths, campaigned for ralph nader for the 2nd time, realized evangelical christianity was no longer for me, and started to realize that there are no jobs for religion majors.  ’00 was also the year that the aforementioned whiskeytown ceased to exist with the solo debut of frontman ryan adams.  and hot damn, he crafted (with the loving help of gillian welch & david rawlings) what is imo the greatest sad bastard broken hearted record ever, and my all-time #2, heartbreaker.  here’s a really cool video of “amy”.

2001.  worked at barnes & noble, volunteered at a pregnancy center, got a work visa to go to ireland with, got more tattoos & went to more shows, played more music, my first nephew noah was born!, broke the edge (true til 21!), graduated college with a useless BA in comparative religion, got dumped – definitely in top 5 worst moments in my life, began my online social networking obsession with makeoutclub (and am now here in RI as a result), went back to maine for a few weeks prior to leaving the country & rekindled friendships with many of my beloved brothers in arms, then went to dublin.  the time i spent there was just amazing. yesterday i saw a lucozade in the foreign foods aisle and got misty eyed.  i wish i could go back & do it again, it was so great.  now, i have to do something different this time with the video.  my favorite album of ‘01 is as friends rust (the best whatevercore band EVER!) won, but there’s only one vid online featuring a song from it, and the audio is bad.  so, from their ep that followed (a young trophy band in the parlance of our times) here’s “more than music, it’s a hairstyle”.

2002.  returned from ireland.  grew my beard.  moved into the crowe’s nest in bangor and we imbibed more beer than perhaps has ever been done in one apartment.  worked for the maine migrant education program and then with kidspeace new england as an education technician, beginning my foray in social work.  that was a great job.  played music with h-dove as eastland & did a radio show with her & jgc.  got ireland tat’d on my right leg.  my other nephew was born!  lost a great friend.  became friends with the lowfive/softer boys.  2002 is actually my favorite year in music of the decade.  wilco’s yankee hotel foxtrot, damien jurado’s i break chairs, the white stripes breakout, coheed & cambria’s amazing debut (it’s been all downhill from there for them), but at the top has to be david bazan aka pedro the lion and his release which was to be “the empire strikes back” in a trilogy of records, control.  and here is the opening track, which bazan in this video is phoning into a radio station, ”options”.

2003.  moved out of the crowe’s nest and to orono.  started a livejournal and in doing so became acquainted with a lovely young lady in floribama named jennifer who i would spend hours talking to online and on the phone, and then she came to visit for the wedding of jgc & h-dove.  worked at the unicel call center.  went to many lowfive shows.  henry was born!  moved to floribama to live with jennifer in her parents house.  i miss floribama sometimes, it was such a beautiful place.  the white sand & emerald water, the food, the working 4 different jobs in the span of 4 months.  good times.  moved to nashville for what i’m told is a total of 2 days. did a lot of driving in ‘03, down to floribama & back, down to nashville & back, got to see a lot of the beauty of appalachia and dixieland.  and, in musical beauty, was the wonderous death cab for cutie album transatlanticism.  here’s “title & registration”.

2004.  the first half of this year was rough.  outside of being softer’s merch dude i didn’t have a lot going on and was very depressed – the quarter life crisis was looming.  spent lots of time with my bangor peeps. dated hilary, which would’ve been much better if she wasn’t in boston and i was in bangor.  began working at the wholesale place my father worked at, first as a warehouse lacky and then as a delivery man. honestly, that delivery job was one of my favorites.  it was fun.  got re-acquainted with my bes gud friend drea.  lived with seth.  the red sox won the world series!!!  and sufjan stevens released seven swans.  here’s “to be alone with you”.

2005.  began working for FHR as a mental health rehabilitation technician, getting back into the social work field.  i loved working at that group home, the people i worked with were great, the agency seemed wonderful (the distance from headquarters in RI made it seem that way) and i really enjoyed working with the clients. the softer crew moved to portland and i ended up back at my parents and central maine was beginning to get gloomy again.  lived with andrea for a few months and then decided it was time to relocate.  got hired with FHR in RI and moved after xmas.  in the music world, one of the best indie rock albums ever was crafted by sufjan stevens with illinois.  it’s weird that he hasn’t really done an album since, considering he’d put out 6 albums in 6 years (the avalanche is an outtakes album, so that don’t count, but apparently we’ll be blessed in october with a new offering!).  here’s ”casimir pulaski day”

2006.  became a rhode islander.  lived with soixante and some other girl who i honestly can’t remember on harrison st. in providence.  worked at the group home and slowly began to realize FHR wasn’t the utopic agency i thought it was, mainly from my boss being the worst person i’ve ever met in my entire life.  dated christine.  my niece was born!  travelled to san antonio with christine, which is the furthest west i’ve been. tried to save darfur. became a regular at trinity brewhouse and the 3 year crush on a married waitress began. had a mini-breakdown during the summer which was super fun. got “hope” & a #7 tat’d on my left wrist. moved to chapin ave with soixante & jer.  dated brittany.  and the most beautiful songstress who hath ever graced our world, neko case, released fox confessor brings the flood.  here’s “hold on, hold on”.

2007.  first half of the year was spent in the chapin ave apartment.  continued dating brittany.  working at the group home under the dictatorial oppression of the she-devil who was my boss.  moved to johnston and lived on my own for the first time (and was in a population of 28,000 the only non-italian).  i’m sure a lot more happened but i don’t remember.  one thing i do remember is that common released what might be his best album, finding forever. here’s ”the people”.

2008.  dated alyssa.  worked at the group home.  dated kerri.  got fired.  campaigned for ralph nader (again).  yeah, that’s about all i got for last year.  it was a downer.  but, radiohead’s in rainbows was officially released.  so, that was good.  from the scotch mist session, here’s “jigsaw falling into place”.

ok, so i noticed that either my memory was waaaaay better and got worse, or my life has just continued becoming more and more boring.  hmmmm…not sure.  oh well.  and that was my 20’s.  onto the next decade!

Last night, when we should have been talking about post-structuralist theory, instead two of my closest friends and I drank beer, ate Indian food and watched, Scotch Mist, a film of  Radiohead in the studio that accompanied the release of In Raindbows. It was perfect. I was always late to the Radiohead buzz. Even though I was their target demographic – an over-educated Anglophile, self-involved and depressed – other than “Creep“, I didn’t really start listening to them until Kid A was released. It’s something that at times – like last night  – I occasionally regret. The video, which goes on for over 50 minutes, is stunningly good, and the music is both haunting and moving. If you have the time, highly recommended you watch the whole thing, but “House of Cards” is my fave and starts at 34:27.

Pois então, muita gente falando que 200 reais é caríssimo (100 aos estudantes), o fato é que se for pra se sacrificar um pouco justamente por uma causa nobre (caso se goste de Los Hermanos, Kraftwerk e Radiohead) é até possível dizer que vale a pena o preço.

Realmente, estou extremamente ansioso!!! imagine, a volta de uma, a vinda de uma que nunca veio, e uma lenda da música eletrônica! Nossa, hehehe. sonhava com isso desde meus 13 aninhos de vida medíocre.

Um vídeo legal de se ver é o Sctoch mist. É meio que um especial de ano novo no qual o rh tocou todas as suas músicas do novo In Rainbows (novo na época, hehe)

If you have an hour to kill …. Radiohead put together a film of songs from their latest album, In Rainbows. It’s an hour well spent.

Mira que yo a esta gente les dije nunca mais … despues de dos pestiños colosales como “Amnesiac” y el disco en solitario de Thom Yorke  “The Eraser” ….. infumables, asi que me quedé en el “OK Computer”

…  hasta que llegó a mis manos IN RAINBOWS, una auténtica maravilla para disfrutarla una vez tras otra y aunque   puede que resulte algo difícil de escuchar la primera vez, luego se puede convertir en algo  o b s e s i v o. 

Este album apareció el pasado mes de Octubre, producido  totalmente por ellos,   la particularidad es que podías descargarlo gratuitamente desde la web  dejando la voluntad ….., es lo que tiene mandar a parla a tu discográfica, y el caso es que nos les fué nada nada mal.

‘Nude’ será o segundo single do sétimo álbum do Radiohead, seguindo ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’, e terá como b-sides versões inéditas de ‘4 Minute Warning’ no vinil de 7″ e ‘Down Is The New Up’ no CD, que já foram lançadas no ‘In Rainbows CD2′. Pra quem não sabe, o CD2 foi lançado apenas no discbox do In Rainbows.

Na divulgação, será usado o vídeo que foi transmitido no Scotch Mist Webcast, onde Thom Yorke e a banda aparecem em slow-motion (vídeo em slow-motion + nude = suuuuucesso). Confira abaixo o vídeo:

The Karma Police – Tribute to Radiohead bring their show back to Red Square in Albany, NY on March 22nd, 2008. Show starts at 10pm and is 18 and over. Performing songs from Radiohead’s entire catalog, including new songs from In_rainbows!

Radiohead has a new video up on their site deadairspace that was supposed to air on The New Year’s Eve/Scotch_Mist webcast for “Videotape”, but it got cut out due to transmission problems.  I was watching it and thought to myself how this is such a new chapter in Radiohead’s career and life. They seem reborn, refreshed, and yes, actually having fun! Thom Yorke has come out of his shell and helped us see a side to him that, until now, has pretty much been closely related to their own song “How To Disappear Completely”.  It inspires me to see how they’ve worked this album and promoted themselves, not sticking to the traditional, droning, all business, record labels that make us completely sick with how they’ve pretty much sucked every ounce of creative soul out of the true artists and musicians and left us feeling like music has become recycled garbage.”I’ve heard that song before, and before, and before, and…”  So even if you don’t like Radiohead, you have to respect what they’ve done for all of us musicians and fans of music - given us new hope!

After last nights amazing performance on Later with Jules Holland(show 200) & the awe inspiring CD release, In Rainbows, I did a little digging on youtube & it didn’t take me long to find a collection of performances on Radiohead’s own channel. They are listed as the Scotch Mist Versions & give us a unique experience of the songs from In Rainbows.

To me it looks an official channel on youtube & I don’t doubt that Radiohead would promote themselves like this on the internet, not after releasing In Rainbows as an online download before it even seen the light of CD marketing.

Radiohead have surprised my recently in a very good way. I had fallen out of love with music over the last 5 or so years & it is seldom that I excited by anything I hear but In Rainbows is such a great return to form for Radiohead that I’d love to see them live. They are one of the only bands that I have liked over a period of time that I haven’t yet been to see in a live performance.

Presente para 2008, o Radiohead, uma das bandas mais amadas do mundo, faz vídeo especial de fim de ano com todas as faixas do In Rainbows.

O álbum já nasce sob o signo da mudança e do novo milênio. A revolução nasce na internet. Você acessa o site da banda e para baixar o álbum você paga quanto quiser e se quiser.

A mudança paradigmática e seu sucesso (é o álbum número 1 na Inglaterra) com certeza trazem uma grande novidade para a relação artistas-gravadoras. Aliás, com esse novo processo de produção, estas últimas foram banidas e a banda consegue chegar direto ao seu público.

Radiohead despidiendo el 2007 por webcast con su Scotch mist

Se acabó el 2007. A eso de las 7:30pm (hora colombiana) sintonicé radiohead.tv y vi, al igual que millones en todo el mundo, un concierto de radiohead via web para despedir el año. Lo primero que dije fue “jueputa lo cogí a la mitad”.

Un golpe más de Radiohead y su “In rainbows”. Hablaron de tocar por primer vez en Argentina y Brasil, ojalá pasen por Colombia.
