Indianapolis’s very own Scott Matelic recently dropped his Party People EP on the Philadelphia based Crossfaded Bacon. The official release features a couple of originals from Scott as well as remixes by Emynd, King Tutt, and Scottie B.  Everything on the EP is a Bmore club banger.  In support of the EP, Mr. Matelic was nice enough to put together a promo mix featuring all of the tunes on the official release, a few remixes by Scott, and some local Indy heat.  I haven’t even listened to this yet, but having watched Scott’s flawless mixing week in and out @ OMG, I am fairly confident when I say that I didn’t have to know the mix is solid.

Saturday 24th of October, Music People bring you another massive installment of monthly party HEAT@ the Cross, featuring over 20 local DJ’s across 3 rooms – plus, a very special guest for this HEAT: Baltimore pioneer SCOTTIE B is flying in for an exclusive one off club set. As well being a top-notch DJ/producer and running one of the most successful B-more club labels – Unruly Records – Scottie B has accomplished what many DJ’s can only aspire to: he’ll forever be known as the innovator of a musical genre, having transformed a regional sound into a style that now influences countless DJs worldwide. 20 years into his career he maintains a level of skill, energy and originality to his sets that make him one of the most requested and sought after djs in the world. Earlier this week, Enso and I took a ghetto ass bus from NYC down to Baltimore,

to play guest sets for Cullen Stalin & Scottie B’s weekly NO RULE night at the Metro Gallery.

It was quite goosebumpy to visit the origin city of what’s called B’more club music! Thanks and huge ups to Cullen and Scottie! Damn me to hell for not taking more pictures. This is all I got for y’all from Baltimore, from the morning after:

Enso was all Baltimore’d out for this trip. Peep the t-shirt and the Baltimore orioles hat.

New Yorkers were giving him shit like “So how the orioles doin’? Not too good eh?”, but the staff at Mickey D’s in Bmore was definitely feeling the steez and giving him major props. Enso is the type of person who is the type of dog that celebrates Bmore to the fullest. Don’t be surprised if you catch him blasting Baltimore club music whilst having candlelight dinner with a boo, taking a bubble bath, reading a book, eating a piece of cake or shaving his chest. So the Ibiza season has come to an end for me after five trips this summer. It’s been a blast. I can’t manage to squeeze in another (unless it’s just two or three days in October, highly unlikely though) so it looks like being a long wait until next June to sample the delights of the White Isle again.

 I don’t want to think about how much I’ve spent on flights, hotels and booze and certainly won’t be trying to work it out but the bank manager hasn’t been knocking on my door so I think we’re okay. And in any case, it’s my treat.

 I don’t spend more than £15 on a t-shirt, I don’t spend more than £25 on a proper shirt or trousers and I don’t spend more than £40 on shoes. I’m not into ‘fashion trends’ and I’m not cool enough to try and look stylish so I save my money for holidays instead.

 I might look like a scarecrow but I’m a scarecrow who goes to Ibiza a lot. I’ll take that, oh yes.

 It really was a bizarre first night out there last week. It started with popping to Eden to give resident DJ (and my good friend) Alex the item he requested from home… a large bottle of Heinz extra light salad cream. Being an Ibiza DJ really is rock’n’roll. Oh yeah – and that stuff costs a bomb out there, assuming you can find somewhere to buy it in the first place.

 From there I shifted along to Plastik, a cool bar run by Colin Butts – amazing author, ex-2wentys rep and a bloody good bloke. We were chatting away when I realised a big group of girls were getting very excited about the presence of some guys in the VIP section. I didn’t recognise them.

 So I asked Colin. “They’re called JLS,” he said. “Holy shit, no way,” I replied. JLS, as you probably know, are one of the most in-demand boybands around. I wouldn’t have picked them out of an identity parade even if they were wearing “We’re in a band called JLS” t-shirts.

 I joined the jostling and quite catty crowd of moist young ladies taking photos even though I wasn’t quite sure which of the people in VIP I was actually aiming my camera at but, via the power of internet searching, I know one of them was Aston Merrygold.

 I’m not sure how many of the other members of the band were there but I got my photos so at least I could show Aaleyah. She’s almost 13 going on 18 and fancies JLS. She also fancies Chris Brown, Taylor Lautner from Twilight and, most remarkably, David Tennant. She, like me, is a Dr. Who fan.

 She regularly describes people during conversation as “dead fit” or “really gay” – the latter description often aimed at me – although by giving her lots of new music, the multiple Ibiza trips and occasionally meeting famous people, she has called me “cool” on occasions. Her classmates were, apparently, quite excited I’d met JLS.

 Kids, eh?

 She also fancies Simon Webbe from Blue and, funnily enough, I met him in 2Nice (Twice As Nice), the next bar I ventured into to see my old mates JC, Lisa and Nick the Meerkat. He was with a group of Page Three models although, due to the alcohol intake, I didn’t find out who they all were. One was Leilani – and I only know that because someone told me the following night.

 I had a chat with Simon about football and DJ-ing and stuff and he said he used to spend a lot of time in Shropshire because he was on the books for a while at Shrewsbury Town. He was a really nice, down-to-earth bloke – unlike his bandmate Duncan who had a most unsatisfactory visit to Pussycats last year.

 Aaleyah was also quite impressed I got to meet him and have a photo although… “He used to look fitter than that,” she said.

 By the way, she did come out with a classic this week when we were discussing her History homework. “Was Louis Armstrong the first man on the moon?” she asked. I then did an impression of Satchmo doing the famous ‘one giant leap for mankind’ saying which was as utterly lost on her as it is probably is on you. It was funny in my head, okay?

 Back to Ibiza and later on the first night, I hooked up with Darren Candy, my boss when I was a 2wentys rep in 1996 – the first time I’d seen him all summer. We didn’t waste any time in caning the booze and getting up to speed with all the news. He’s my longest-standing friend on the island and a summer in Ibiza without seeing him would’ve been unthinkable.

 I was very drunk that night. I’ve been in far worse states but something happened which quite scared me. I remember leaving the club… and then waking up next day back at the hotel. I had no memory of the in-between bit. Even in an alcoholic haze I can usually piece together things from the night before but this time it was a blank.

 I don’t recall passing the chicken baguette man. I don’t recall reaching the top of the West End. I don’t remember plastering any road signs with ‘I Love DJ Wanker’ stickers. I don’t remember finding my hotel, getting the key or crashing out in bed. That is really unlike me and more in keeping with a friend of mine who shall remain nameless.

 I felt utterly rank the next day – but it wasn’t a hangover. It was being out of control, not something I like. Maybe I’ll blame it on someone spiking my drink. As my friend Ross, the head barman at Play2, said the following night in his dry, sarcastic Bradford tone: “Perhaps your Red Bull was spiked with vodka.” Ha bloody ha.

Those multiple Tequila shots in Eden Rooms with Danny Barry (the magnificent, talented Danny Barry to give him his full title) probably contributed to it somewhere down the line…

 There’s always plenty going on around the Brisa pool. One lad I had some conversations with seemed to keep mistaking me for a sibling.

 “Alright, bruv?”

“What’s up, bruv?”

“Safe, bruv.”

“Wanna fag, bruv?” etc

 Maybe his mistook me for Joe Brown’s backing band. You’ve really got to know your 1960s pop music to understand that. And even if you do, you’ll realise it’s more clever than actually funny.

 There were two girls called Vicki and Lesleyann at the pool who provided both eye candy and entertainment.

 Me: “So where in Scotland are you girls from then?”

Vicki: “Aberdeen… but how do you know we’re from Scotland?”

Me: “Erm… it was the Scottish accent I suppose.”

Vicki: “Ah. Oh right.”

 Vicki did tell me that Lesleyann came out with a corker on the flight to Ibiza. She turned to the person sat next to her and said: “So where are you flying to then?” The woman apparently gave her the thousand yard stare before mumbling: “Ibiza.” This satisfied Lesleyann’s curiosity although the dumb-ness of the question was lost on her.

 Then there were the Irish lads, one of which I met there last year. He was constantly off his head on a concoction of drugs and booze and was nominally the leader of his mashed up pack. “Do you want some ketamine?” he asked. I politely declined, making my anti-drugs stance quite clear.

 Ketamine is a horse tranquiliser. I do not want to be treated like a horse… although, that said, I’d like to be ridden a bit more often and hung like one.

 I read Frank Skinner’s book about his return to stand up comedy and, as expected, it was a belter. I was constantly laughing out loud around the pool. His autobiography is the best I’ve ever read and while this wasn’t quite in the same league, it was still brilliant.

 There was also some deep stuff in it. At one point he discussed taking relationship advice and guidance from a trained advisor and Frank wrote this:

 “Apparently, I’m something of a control freak who hoovers up knowledge and information to give me the reassuring feeling that I’ve got a grip on the world. I’m never down for long because I am constantly stimulated, constantly moving on.”

 Spookily, it also summed me up perfectly.

 Another sign of getting old… on Tuesday night, I went back to my mate’s place at 6am with a couple of tidy women and ended up sprawled on his sofa, falling asleep in front of Sky Sports News while they drank and gossiped away. In hindsight, perhaps that was a bit rude of me but, truth be told, I couldn’t be arsed!

 Wednesday night was, as always, Garlands at Eden. While it has not quite hit the same outstanding heights of previous years, it’s still fantastic. Dave Booth rocked the main room as only he can. I got introduced by Alex to two DJs called Dave Whelan and Mike di Scala who both found the whole djwanker concept quite amusing.

 Mike is also part of Ultrabeat and has sung on a lot of their records, most notably on their breakthrough hit ‘Pretty Green Eyes’ which made number two in 2003. They also remixed ‘It’s Over Now’ by Big Ang – someone Dale and I met in Ibiza in July.

 I usually fly back on a Thursday night so never get to sample the delights (or otherwise) of the Twice as Nice brand at Eden but this time I wanted to see it in all its glory. It’s essentially an urban night so not necessarily my bag. I bumped into MC Harvey outside, just as he was having an altercation with a group of lads who were being abusive and presumably trying to make a name for themselves.

 Harvey wasn’t impressed and stood up to them, shouting words like “bumbaclart” (that may not be the correct spelling but I’ve gone for the phonetic version) – whatever that means. Actually, I’ve since looked it up and wouldn’t appear to be that pleasant!

 Why would these lads have a pop at Harvey? Unless, perhaps, they were fans of Alesha Dixon. Harvey and his crew also had some big security guys with them. Had it escalated, there would only be one winner – and the group of lads would soon have realised their Mis-Teeq… erm, their mistake.

 Once the melee died down, I raised the subject of his visit to Telford and he cut in saying: “Yeah, Pussycats – I remember because that’s the night my daughter was born.” I considered asking whether he named her after his trip to Shropshire. Sweet little Chlamydia Woodside Single Mother Council Scum Harvey is now 18 months old. Bless. She’s actually called Angel Hylton Harvey and I’m sure Angel is a real delight.

 Groan as much as you like but bad jokes are a speciality here.

 Once inside the club, I felt a bit out of place. It was like an Ed Hardy t-shirt convention. I’m a middle-class (or at least lower middle-class) boy who grew up in a detached bungalow at the bottom of a suburban cul-de-sac whereas a lot of the people there appeared to be from the ‘street’ or the ‘hood’. The only hood in my upbringing was on a grim-looking plastic anorak which kept my hair dry in the rain.

 Initially, it didn’t really sit comfortably with me. It seemed to be full of too-cool-for-school urban-loving party people. And there I was – old, bald and unable to work out what the hell these rappers were saying.

 Skepta and Dr Psycho did their thing on stage. According to the fountain of all knowledge that is Google, Skepta is “a British grime MC from Tottenham” who reckons “we need some more girls in here” while Dr Psycho was “a fictional character in comic magazines, portrayed as a villainous telepathic dwarf” although I suspect the Wikipedia page isn’t actually referring to the same Dr Psycho.

 And there is no truth in the rumour whatsoever that Dr Psycho has a relative living in Telford who really should get some self-awareness. [Memo to self: Make sure I clear that last line with the legal department in case I get another deluded email from… oh, never mind.]

 Then Harvey stepped up to the plate, delivering a brilliant MC performance as the place exploded. He was followed by a beatboxer who initially sounded like a didgeridoo before conjuring up a spine-tingling version of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean.

 At this point I was hooked. I even started clapping, it was that good. DJ Wanker = urban lover. Okay, I wouldn’t go that far but I’d bought into the product.

 What followed next was unexpected. They dropped Blur, Nirvana, The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs with Harvey rapping. It was utter brilliance. The rest of the night was full of classics – urban, old skool house and more – and I told the boss of Twice as Nice how uplifting the experience was for me. I was out of my comfort zone but it was a pleasant surprise.

 Notable mentions on the night also go to the brilliant DJ Scottie B and the Vibe Honeys.

 It was a mad time really – leaving Pussycats at 4am on Monday morning to catch an early flight from Liverpool and then returning from Ibiza on Friday evening, driving straight back to the club to DJ. Even Ryanair weren’t as scary and horrible as everyone seemed to suggest they might be.

 I love Ibiza. That may seem obvious but I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the place.

Top Billin, along with Scottie B, whos tracks are featured in this mix, is considered to be one of the grandaddies of Bmore, also known as Baltimore Club. While some of his new jams are aligning with the new wave tidal wave of the last couple of years, he still manages to provide the perfect shake, pop and roll needed to get any ass shak’n.

Yes. Another Little Boots remix. But honestly, this may be my favorite of the bunch. AC Slater and Skeet Skeet go nuts on “Meddle” and tweak it out in a way I hadn’t yet heard L.B. tweaked. And let’s be frank – a GoldieLocks verse or two never hurt a track. (Props to Big Stereo.)

I, like most everyone else on the face of the planet, love “Township Funk.” And though I’m sure you’re not yet tired of the original (or the Radioclit remix, for that matter), a little variety in your sets (or play lists) can’t hurt. Enter Scottie B. There was never any doubt in my mind that hand claps and a little added bump would be a nice addition to the track, but I fully admit that I never saw cries of “let’s go” coming. Nice.
