You may be surprised at the scope of this week’s topic because when it comes to Elvis Presley,

You may be surprised at the scope of this week’s topic because when it comes to Elvis Presley, well nearly everyone’s got an opinion. The iconic nature of Elvis Presley in music and popular culture, has often made him a subject of, or a benchmark, in numerous songs. We launched the show with CALLING ELVIS by Dire Straits. Written by Mark Knopler and released in 1991, the song is about an Elvis fan that can’t believe that Elvis Presley is dead. Based on some of the bizarre ’sightings’ over the years, I fear he is not alone.

A song from one of my favourite films followed: Public Enemy’s groundbreaking FIGHT THE POWER from the soundtrack of DO THE RIGHT THING, directed by Spike Lee in 1989. Like the film, the song broke at a crucial period in America’s struggle with race. Unabashedly political, FIGHT THE POWER was confrontational in the way that great rock has always been. It attacks a whole roster of American icons including Elvis and John Wayne in what amounts to a virtual flag burning. Because who better embodies the American ideal than the King? The song goes so far as to call Elvis racist. I don’t agree with that. But what I do know from the National Archives is that in 1970 Elvis wrote a six-page letter to Richard Nixon asking him to make him a ‘Federal Agent-At-Large’ in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. And amongst the gifts that Elvis presented to the then President was a Colt-45 pistol. So what do we make of all this? Maybe only that, like a lot of his countrymen, Elvis was a misguided patriot who defended the nation’s order – an order from which blacks, in particular, had been routinely barred. The irony, of course, is that Elvis was the first artist to successfully blend black and white music: country music and the blues. And didn’t he do it well?

It was time for a change of tone: The very whimsical and wonderful Kirsty McColl with THERE’S A GUY WORKS DOWN THE CHIP SHOP SWEARS HE’S ELVIS. The song made an appearance on the FAMOUS PEOPLE show, but definitely deserved another spin. We followed with Richard Thompson’s FROM GALWAY TO GRACELAND.

Robbie Williams’ ADVERTISING SPACE is a song not only about Elvis but, also, about the price of fame. Emmylou Harris followed with BOY FROM TUPELO. In case you weren’t aware Elvis was born in Tupelo Mississipi on January 8, 1935. And then it was the great Roy Orbison with HOUND DOG MAN.

Living Colour funked it up with their critique of the tabloids. The song ELVIS IS DEAD ups the ante with an appearance by Little Richard. Check it out.

We dived into the second hour of the program with Ann Margret singing the title song of the film BYE BYE BIRDIE. Based on the stage musical of the same name, the story was inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the US Army in 1957. Jesse Pearson played the role of teen idol Conrad Birdie, whose character’s name is a wordplay on another singer of the era, Conway Twitty. The film is credited with making Ann-Margret a superstar during the mid-1960s, leading to her appearing with Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas in 1964.

A couple of great songs were suggested to me by BayFM’s very own Cowboy Sweetheart, Carrie D. First up, Bap Kennedy with GLADYS & VERNON about Elvis’s parents and the night that Elvis was born. And then it was the great Waylon Jennings with the very entertaining NOBODY KNOWS.

I absolutely adore BLACK VELVET by Allanah Myles and have played that before. But, hey, when a song’s as good as this one it deserves a replay!

U2’s song ELVIS ATE AMERICA illustrates the many personas of Elvis, both good and bad. And then it was the romantically delusional Scouting For Girls with ELVIS ISN’T DEAD: ”Elvis isn’t dead ’cause I heard him on the radio….. and you’re coming back to me.” Yeah, sure guys.

Time to get serious: First up, Kate Bush with her hit song about Elvis – KING OF THE MOUNTAIN. And then, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds transported us into a disturbing world with their song about the night that Elvis was born. Elvis was a twin but his brother was still-born. The song is TUPELO from the album THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. Here’s the totally mesmerising clip:

John Fogarty likens Elvis to the BIG TRAIN (FROM MEMPHIS). Neil Young reminded us that it’s “better to burn out than to fade away “, with his song MY, MY, HEY HEY.

Another of my faves followed: Cowboy Junkies with BLUE MOON REVISITED, otherwise known as SONG FOR ELVIS. And then it was Paul Simon’s song about travelling to Elvis Presley’s home, GRACELAND, with the Everly Brothers helping out on vocals. Don’t have a clip with the Everlys in it, but you can’t do much better than this concert performance of the song in Zimbabwe. Enjoy.

There was time for a little more mjusic dedicated to Elvis before signing off and what better than ELVIS HAS JUST LEFT THE BUILDING by the one and only Frank Zappa. And, of course, I had to play some of the King himself so we went out with BURNIN’ LOVE. Here’s what all the fuss is about:

Next week’s show will be dedicated to the patron saint of Theme Park, Roy Orbison, who died 21 years ago this December 6. So songs by Roy Orbison, The Travelling Wilburys, duets with Roy and covers of Roy Orbison songs. Anything connected to Roy Orbison qualifies. Personally I can’t wait!

E em 2009 indicados no EMA (Europ Music Awrds) à “Best New Act”. O primeiro single trabalhado foi “It’s Not About You”, que foi reformulada em 2008.

Kostproben? »But I’ll get by, without your smile I’ll get through without you. But I wish it was me you chose…«

Scouting for Girls in ihrer Heimat England

The Feeling, nur weniger pompös.

I’m a bit of a scardy cat about flying – being a Capricorn I like my feet firmly on the ground

I’m a bit of a scardy cat about flying – being a Capricorn I like my feet firmly on the ground. But there’s no denying some of the pleasures of traveling by plane: the first glimpse of a new city at night, the first breath of unfamiliar air… and did I mention the complimentary movies? But, let’s face it, its getting harder: If the never-ending security checks don’t take the last bit of glamour out of air travel, then the eco-guilt will.

This is where music’s power to create magic from the mundane comes in. Who wants to hear a song about removing your shoes at the X-ray machine, or choosing between chicken and beef? Music reminds us that soaring above the clouds, despite all the irritations and anxiety, is a pretty amazing thing.

Back in 1957, commercial air travel was still radiant with romance, particularly, I imagine, if you were Frank Sinatra. Buoyed by Billy May’s breezy arrangement, our opening track COME FLY WITH ME invites us to join the good life. Unfortunately, I doubt that it will ever be as glamorous again.

Another aspect of air travel that you can’t escape from, especially if you live in Australia, is jetlag and The Specials capture those jetlag jitters beautifully on INTERNATIONAL JET SET. Jack Johnson reckons that the safest way to travel is in the air, as he shamelessly promotes NORTHWEST AIRLINES while Billy Bragg and Wilco have booked to travel on an AIRLINE TO HEAVEN.

The Foo Fighters win the prize for the funniest video clip with LEARN TO FLY. Having TENACIOUS D, (Jack Black and Kyle Gass), guesting wasn’t a bad move either. Check it out:

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights. Relax….

Time to take a listen to the Boxtops who don’t have time to take a fast train, they need a ticket for an aeroplane. Their baby just sent them a LETTER. The Beatles are keen to tell us all about a “dreadful” flight to the USSR from Miami Beach in the opening track from their White album, BACK IN THE USSR.

Prince is addicted to air travel. After all, without it how could he call himself an INTERNATIONAL LOVER? Jonathan Richman, bless his little cotton socks, likes nothing better that to imagine that he’s A LITTLE AIRPLANE. I think they’ve both got a little bit of explaining to do!

In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with more than one small child, pick your favorite.

It would be impossible to choose between the talented siblings, Angus and Julia Stone. Their song, PAPER AEROPLANE,is dedicated to the best way to send a letter. Take a look at this clip.

.

The Byrds wrote the song EIGHT MILES HIGH about their first trip to London. Lyricist Gene Clark suffered badly from a fear of flying. Roger McGuinn’s Coltrane-inspired guitar solo led some radio stations to ban it because they thought it was a drug song. Silly people.

With AMELIA Joni Mitchell turns to the ghost of vanished aviator Amelia Earheart to confide the regrets of a life ruled by wanderlust: “I’ve spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude.” That girl certainly knows how to write a lyric.

I love AIRPLANE SONG by Scouting for Girls. Here’s the original 2006 demo for you to look/listen to. Yeah, get yourself on an aeroplane, ’cause its been too long since you went away.

We now need to lock our trays and put our seats into the upright position. Turbulence ahead with the Steve Miller Band singing JET AIRLINER, Hoodoo Gurus with I WAS A KAMIKAZEE PILOT, HELICOPTER by Bloc Party and Red Hot Chili Peppers with ZEPHYR SONG.

We can’t forget the humble flight attendant and there’s no better song to do it with than the Hall & Oates number LAS VEGAS TURNAROUND (otherwise known as the, non-PC, Stewardess Song).

We followed with Goldfrapp singing FLY ME AWAY. Now if you listen to the show or read the blog, you’ll know that I’m a film/video freak and especially like good animation. Take a look at this fantastically quirky video clip for Goldfrapp’s song.

To finish the show: Susan Raye’s one and only hit, L.A. INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

Now, as you exit the aircraft, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed amongst the Theme Park cabin crew and, as the captain, I’ll get first pick.

Next week: AUTOMOBILES when I’m looking forward to playing Mic Conway’s National Junk Band’s tune, WHO GAVE YOU THE LICENCE TO DRIVE ME CRAZY?

Drop me a line if you have any requests!

How fabulous.

I hate them. They are totally generic and sad. It will also be chav infested, most likely. Perhaps there’ll be some cute people, though.

If you haven’t listened to said band before, look them up. They may seem catchy at first, but all their songs sound identical and are all about crap.

But, I get in for free, since we know the people organising it, and its an excuse to dress up. I just don’t know what shoes to wear. Argh.

Set in the grounds of the Cornbury Estate, ‘The Cornbury Music Festival’ is a little like a characte

Set in the grounds of the Cornbury Estate, ‘The Cornbury Music Festival’ is a little like a character from an 18th Century English novel. She’s the well to do manor house daughter that runs off to roll in the hay with the stable boy. Cornbury is the country house garden party rolling in the hay with the rock, or in this case more, pop, festival.

The Cornbury audience – lesser in number this year than last - is more Pimms than Lager, more Marie Claire than NME. The age demographic is distinctly family, with the 0 – 14’s bought by 30 plus parents who left older siblings at home. I guess there was lots of teenage rampage in the homes of Cornbury’s audience whilst mum and dad got their festival fix for the year.

The Cornbury audience were there for the music, and on day one they enthusiastically received sets from The Boy least Likely to and Dodgy. However when The Magic Numbers walked on the band made up of two sets of sisters and brothers almost instantly distinguished themselves as the first of the evening headliners. Having been in the studio for some time ‘The Numbers’ and the crowd were clearly happy to see each other. The much anticipated new material is beautiful and exciting. ‘Pulse’ remembers the influence that Brian Wilson still has on pop, but gives that combination of sounds a distinct ‘magic’ twist. Excited to have friends and family in the crowd, the band celebrated throughout the set with enough of a listen to the new material to get us all excited and finished by letting anarchy reign when they invited the audience up on stage to dance.

Sharleen Spiteri delivered what I thought was a bit of a cabaret set, but the crowd adored her and my lord that girl can sing. I swear she has leather lungs ! The many years on the road have not tired or tarnished her and this woman, at the top of her game, powered through an hour of material and had plenty in reserve at the end of her set. The rain came, the audience stood their ground and when Scouting for Girls took to the stage Cornbury showed it’s rocking credentials. The thousands of screaming female voices were ready to party as the band lit the fuse with hit after hit. Who was egging who on was anyone’s guess but nobody cared about the rain anymore. Such a vast difference from last year’s sombre Paul Simon set, Cornbury finished it’s Saturday night leaping, screaming and having a whale of a time.

When the sun is shining and the bands are playing, there is no better festival than Cornbury. Sunday bought mercifully sunny skies and when Imelda May took the stage the audience let her know how much they love her. The first artist of the weekend to get an encore, Imelda played material from Love Tattoo and her new album due around January.

The Pretenders Martin Chambers is one of the world’s best drummers and a study in reserved energy and movement. Totally in charge of the bands engine room, his – still – punk triplets fire off the skins keeping the band in order and on time. Those who think bass players are a dime a dozen, should spend some time listening to Chambers side kick in the rhythm section Nick Wilkinson. Chrissie Hynde was on form and in voice. She just seems to love playing guitar and is truly a rock n roller. When inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame Chrissie said that she thought that The Pretenders had looked like a tribute band for the last 20 years, however we saw none of this. The Pretenders 2009 are a living breathing natural extension of what went before. The brilliant Cornbury production served them well.

Finally it was the moment for The Children of the Cornbury to rise as stalks on parents shoulders as The SugaBabes called for ‘hands in the air’. The kids and teens had tolerated their parents heritage moments, and they turned the Cornbury lawns into a dance floor, recreating all the steps they have practiced in front of telly’s and in bedrooms. The lighting looked as if it had been installed especially for the vocal trio as someone finally did something imaginative with lighting and staging.

Pop, Rock and Family fun, The Cornbury Festival is a winner hands down !

One of my favourite comedians Mark Watson recently wrote on his Twitter page how he thought Kings Of Leon’s Sex On Fire sounded like the Stereophonics’ hit Dakota. It sort of got me thinking about which songs I thought were similar to others.

And so, after much searching and listening through the wonder that is Spotify, I noted the following:

Lily Allen’s Not Fair sounds a fair bit like Doves’ Kingdom Of Rust.

Take That’s Greatest Day could easily be mistaken for a Snow Patrol song. Chasing Cars springs to mind.

Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the musical twin of Travis’ Writing To Reach You.

Keane’s Better Than This has echoes of David Bowie’s Ashes To Ashes.

The Hoosiers’ Cops And Robbers reminds me of The Cure’s Love Cats.

And Scouting For Girls’ She’s So Lovely sounds like, er, every other Scouting For Girls song.

I am fully aware that at least one other person has made the same observations of one or two of the pairs of songs I’ve mentioned here. However, listening to them one after the other has made me even more convinced of the similarities between them. And in no way am I saying that the fact that these songs are identical to others constitutes a bad thing. In fact, I happen to like most of the songs I’ve mentioned here.

EDIT : If you can think of any other songs that sound identical to other songs, then please feel free to leave a comment. Or tell me how much you agree with me on the ones I’ve mentioned. Or how much you disagree with me and think that I should have my ears syringed. I can take it.

After seeing the report on the Onion News Network and then watching the new Star Trek movie a few days ago, I felt I should write a song about it. Note that it is strictly about the newest movie, which plays in a changed time line, so don’t be disappointed/angry/etc. if there are differences between my song and what you know about the Star Trek Universe.

And be warned: There are a few spoilers in the song!

So here goes:

Jim Kirk

To the tune of James Bond by Scouting for Girls

James T. Kirk, the Academys newest student, his father is dead.
Spending time with girls in bed.

I watched you as a kid,
a hero in the sky,
since I was I boy I’ve wanted to
be that Shatner guy.

But now the world has changed, and Spock is being blamed,
cause Nero lost his planet, or so he has proclaimed.

So I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
Kissing with green girls and then hiding away.
And I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
But Uhura still refuses to tell me her first name.

Hello cadet Kirk, we’ve been expecting you.
You cheated at the Kobayashi Maru, is that true?
Spock was quite supprised, he sais you hacked the test.
But you say that there’s always a way out for the best.

So I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
You wouldn’t just be left in the shipping bay.
And I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
Onbord the Enterprise, thanks to Doc. McCoy.

You got an injection, got an injection, got an injection, what a thrill.
You got an injection, got an injection, got an injection, now you’re ill.
You got an injection, that made your hands go and decided to swell.
You got an injection, got an injection, but all will be well.

They wanted to leave you, they wanted to leave you, they wanted finish the trial.
They wanted to leave you, they wanted to leave you, they wanted finish the trial.

And I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
Warning Captain Pike that it’s a trap, there’ll be a fray.
And I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
Maybe one day I’ll hear Spock say Uhuras first name.
And I wish I was Jim Kirk, just for the day.
Doing all my best to blow the bad guys away.

Sulu and McCoy and Chekov and Scotty, Uhura and Spock and maybe one day me.

Land of Cain is a four piece rock/metal outfit from West London. Featuring superb guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, progressive strains and thought provoking lyrics the band are becoming
a force to be reckoned with in the UK hard rock scene.

The band started life as “One Bitter Pill” in 2004, with Grant Chambers and Aaron Waddingham in the original line-up, as well as Chris Jones (now of Voodoo Six).

With the departure of Chris in late 2007, Grant and Aaron decided to take the band in a darker and heavier direction, and with the additionof Spencer Dargue on Drums and Chris Jordan on Bass, the band began writing the new material which would later evolve into the songs for their first album
“Collapse the Control”.

The band began recording the album in early 2008 at The Lodge in
Northampton, and hope to be able to release it early in 2009.

Think saxophones, and most of us will immediately start thinking
of jazz, specifically trad jazz. No bad thing, maybe, as there are few
instruments as stunning as the saxophone and few sounds as effortlessly
beautiful as jazz. YolanDa Brown is someone who has made the instrument
truly her own as a miraculously gifted saxophonist fluent in a whole
lot more than just one genre.

As her two EPs to date, July 2007’s ‘Finding My Voice’ and
August 2008’s ‘A Step Closer’ attest to an artist who takes jazz and introduces it to all sorts: to soul, to R&B and gospel, to loping reggae and soaring Latin. She can take a sound at first emotionally raw and incontestably infectious, and make it sound like nothing else on earth. For the past three years she has performed with some of the world’s most respected artists. Selling out venues like London’s Jazz Café at the drop of a
hat and the recipient of a prestigious MOBO Award, YolanDa is in demand
and it is a great privilege that she will be appearing with her band
here at The Firestation for this very special concert.

Jason Mraz & Colbie Calliat- Lucky.
This pretty much completes my summer-y mood.

Paula Deanda- Doin’ Too Much.

Dana Fuchs- Why Don’t We Do it In The Road (Across the Universe)
I don’t think that there will be a day that goes by without an Across the Universe song in it.

Deena Carter- There’s No Limit.
This has been my theme song for a few days now. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

Marques Houston- That Girl.
While downloading music at breakfast this morning, I went on a slight nogastalgia kick. This song was the first that I uploaded to my original XBOX. (I needed some hot tunes to play burnout on). Admittedly, this was only about five years ago, but with the amount that has changed between now and then, it works.

Kenny Chesney- Summertime.
I’m so pumped for summer it’s not even funny. This song just makes me want it more.

Warrant- Cherry Pie.
I needed a little 80’s in my day today. And driving on the freeway, with this blaring? No feeling like it. haha.

Frankie J & Baby Bash- Obsession.
Even though I hadn’t heard it in over a year, I still knew every word when I started listening to it the other day.

Erika Jo- I Break Things.
Although a definite one hit wonder (if that) I really do Love this song. It’s young, but cute.

Scouting For Girls- Heartbeat.

My friend made me listen to this UK band, and I’m so glad I did. I love the upbeat pop sound.

went out in byzantium,
moscow and scum
yearning for the piper

no leons, fauns or singing prawns
powdered sympathy for an angel
in ecstatic mansions of deaf shanties
in holes of gnomes and willows of trombones

have you seen the piper?
he’s the bastard in the lightbar
pretty handsome – always jolly
in tie and chains
exciting as gingerbread
though he’s always ahead

me & and my friends
went out in albion,
washington and chrome
seeking the piper

no lizard kings or
just the myth spitting morphine
on a crowd of clones
yearning for cellphones and gasoline

a pain in the ass -
HYPE! HYPE! HYPE! … Zurecht. Mal was Neues. Quasi der Gary-Numan-Pop des neuen Jahrtausends.

Platz 9: Rufus Wainwright mit “Rules & Regulations”. “These are just the rules and regulations of the birds, and the bees, the earth, and the trees, not to mention the gods, not to mention the gods.”
myzeitgeist aus Dänemark meint: “Beautiful song, wonderful hairdo, and long-johns have never looked sexier!”

Platz 8: Reamonn mit “Promise”. “Sometimes we’re holding on by strings.”

Platz 7: The All-American Rejects mit “Gives You Hell”. “Now where’s your picket fence, love?
Platz 6: Alela Diane mit “The Pirate’s Gospel”. “While some folks pray their path to Jesus, we’re gonna sing the Pirate’s Gospel, we’re gonna sew these feet for dancin’, we’re gonna keep our eyes wide open.”

Platz 5: Scouting For Girls mit “Heartbeat”. “Always up for a laugh, she’s a pain in the arse.”

“I will become this animal perfectly adapted to the music halls.”
Andrew Bird is my new OBSESSION! Das erste Mal gehört habe ich ihn auf der Dark Was The Night-CD, auf der er “The Giant Of Illinois” von The Handsome Family covert. Seitdem bin ich Hardcore-Fan. [Weitere Informationen zu Dark Was The Night gibt es hier.

Platz 2: Pet Shop Boys mit “King Of Rome”. “And if I were the King of Rome I couldn’t be more tragic; my fate to roam so far from home in search of my lost magic.”
Ich sage YES zu den Pet Shop Boys! Und zu ihrem neuen, zehnten Studioalbum! Mit Smith-Gitarrist Johnny Marr, Streicherarrangements von Owen Pallett (The Arcade Fire, The Shadow Puppets) und einem Track-by-Track-Audiokommentar von Neil Tennant und Chris Lowe. Fantastisch!

Selig vom Feinsten!

With ABSTRACT GENIUS

KamikazeTest Pilots mostly come from a country called Zimbabwe which is why they have the funny accents, although they have been living in the UK for near on a decade, so the accents are funnier still.

Ryan (aka Beans) plucked up the courage to ask his grandfather, a 6 foot plus ex-cop, if he could have a set of ancient jazz drums to fulfill a dream thought up during the long and hot african summers. His request granted, he set off forming a band with his younger brother Wes. It was soon obvious that Wes had a natural gift for the drums, so Ryan picked up the guitar, learned a few chords and slowly progressed to writing songs. They took their “band” to the boarding school they went to and it was then they met Martin.

Martin started on 6 strings, learning the very few licks and chords that Beans knew and with a revolving door of bassists, a band was born. However, turmoil created within Zimbabwe forced all matters of music to be put aside and for us to take stock of what options were available to us. We decided that it was time to spread our wings.

Kamikaze Test Pilots was eventually formed in 2005 by Beans and Wes. There were a number of member changes, with Martin joining the band as bassist in January 2006. The last of the changes happened in January 2008 when the band were joined by Jim Davies (ex-Loki) on guitar. To date we have enjoyed local radio and internet radio airplay, have self released a six track EP (“Into The Sun”-BUY IT NOW!) and are constantly gigging some bar somewhere. . .

There has been some bad press lately about one of my favourite bands the Jonas Brothers. The boys picked up Worst Album and Worst Band at the NME Awards in London on Wednesday, February 25th. The article (which can be found here) claims that “The band are officially worse than Scouting For Girls and Fall Out Boy”. I’m not a big fan of Scouting For Girls or Fall Out Boy but there is nothing wrong with their music. I absolutely hate it when people think they are music aficinado’s and that anything that is too mainstream is not to be considered decent music. They are not music experts but closed minded, arrogant twats. Anything that does not fall under punk rock or indie rock is to be shunned? That is total bullshit. I feel I have more of a stand in judging music, my musical tastes range from pop to rock to R&B to soul, I even have a few oldies put in for good measure. By looking at my Last FM page you’ll be able to see my top 8 most played artists: The Cure, George Michael, Jimmy Eat World, Take That, Jonas Brothers, The Script, Ne-Yo and Robert Pattinson. No one can tell me I have no idea about music. And that’s just my top 8! When it comes to music, no one can deny me of being open minded. It is just about the only thing I am open minded about! So, after clarifying my right to talk about what music is good music, I will now begin to defend my love of the Jonas Brothers.

They are heartthrobs. It isn’t just teens who like the band. Joe Jonas has been rumoured to be dating Camilla Belle. She is 22 and he is 19. I am not too old to like them. The oldest, Kevin, is 21. He is six months older than me. I don’t think that’s paedophilia!?

Think about boybands of the 90’s, they were way cheesier than these guys! JB’s songs are catchy, very catchy in my case. So why all the hatred?

You cannot deny their business skills. They have released album after album after album for the past three years, have performed at countless of shows, have had two movies released… these boys aren’t so stupid! I don’t think they’d care about haters. Would you care if you had millions of dollars rolling in? I think not.

They are great role models for kids. They are all round nice guys. Whether or not you believe in their virginity pact, they are setting a good example. Their songs are not about sex, something which is unusual for music of today.

They are amazing performers. They know how to get a crowd going with singing, instrument playing and acrobatics. I have seen them perform twice and am going to see them again June 15th. I can’t get enough.

Meeting JB at Hammersmith Apollo on September 11th, 2008

Whatever anyone says to me, these guys rock my socks! And people can call me sad or say that I have bad music taste, but I know that I do have good music taste. I am open minded too. It’s just a shame that haters aren’t that way too. I believe people to be jealous, JB have the money, the success, the fame, the girls. It seems like these factors cloud haters’ judgement and instead of viewing their music for music, all they see are reasons to dislike them. Reasons that have nothing to do with their talent.

The good:
Elbow winning best British group- and finally getting the recognition they deserve.
Kings of Leon winning two awards.
Coldplay’s performance.
Take That’s performance – yeah I’m not a big fan and yes they were miming but it was still impressive.
U2’s performance – good, although their new song is not one of their best.
Scouting for Girls not winning an award.

The Bad:
Girls Aloud winning best single -should’ve been Duffy or Coldplay
Coldplay not winning a thing.
The Ting Tings/Estelle colloboration – wrong on so many levels
James Corden – I love the guy, but he wasn’t very funny last night. Things were better when he was with Matthew Horne, but when it was just him and Kylie doing the links he very nearly died on his arse.

Overall, not bad. Could’ve been better, though.

“Are the boys being crowded out?” asks Jenny Murray on this morning’s Woman’s Hour. I’m a Mummy Blogger (really!) and I’m at home listening to the radio and doing ‘wimmin’s work’ while Sarah goes out every day to earn the cash, so I find this whole girl/boy discussion fascinating. And apart from asking whether boys and girls should be mixing with their own ‘gender’ (it’s sex, for goodness sake – the feather-boa wearing thing is ‘gender’) this was a useful item. Girls can join the cubs and scouts, play football with the boys (at least until age 13) but the boys can’t join the Girl Guides. Girls are everywhere and can – as one speaker on the programme said – ‘do anything’ while boys, well, must be ‘boys’.

One father of a boy with three big sisters said his son “feels comfortable in a tutu, and wearing feather-boas”. A former colleague of mine said he could always tell a man who had a sister. And having taught at an all-boys school where there was a massive macho reaction against anything effeminate or delicate (though, as usual with adolescent boys, they did ‘protest too much’) I’m convinced of the civilising influence of girls on boys. But has it gone too far? What’s happening to the boys? Are we in danger of raising a generation of men with an identity-crisis?

It’s fascinating watching Charlie play, precisely because he gravitates towards anything ‘typically’ masculine, especially things with wheels. It doesn’t matter if it’s pink or blue or decorated with Fifi Forget-Me-Not or Thomas the Tank Engine, he just loves wheels. And cars. And trains. Boys toys. There are others less gender-stereotypical toys for him to choose from. But he doesn’t. He’s a typical little ‘boy’. He’s walking like a Frankenstein mini-me and opening doors and taking things apart; he can kick a ball (unlike his father!) and generally cause havoc round the house. Actually, a spell in the Guides might do him good. I’m just glad he’s got an older sister!

This year’s ‘as vote for by Radio One’ listeners Breakthrough Act is one of the following five:

Adele – I can’t stand her! While I do concede that she has a voice, I find her to be one of the most instantly unlikable people I have ever come across, that I haven’t actually met! The sound of one of her songs playing will see me switch stations.

The Last Shadow Puppets – no idea! Maybe I’d recognise their songs if I heard them but as if right now they are not on my radar.

Duffy – really great songs with a fantastic & unique voice. An album I have been meaning to get for a while now.

Scouting For Girls – I have liked every one if their songs that they have released and really should get their album too. Fun lyrics and catchy bouncy tunes, thumbs up.

The Ting Tings – I heard their debut single before they became widely known but couldn’t remember what they were called so was unsuccessful in tracking them down. Of course it didn’t take long for them to become known by all and Not My Name went on to be one of the songs of 2008. The 2nd single was just as catchy and there is more to this band than meets the eye. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but this is another album I really need to get?

So, 1 I don’t like, 1 I don’t know and three I really like, who gets my vote? The Tiny Tings – closely edging out Duffy as the band I’d like to hear more of and whose songs I know I like to hear the most.
