If Thanksgiving is the appointed time for rampant overeating and Black Friday our annual date with discount frenzy, then today could perhaps become enshrined as Hangover Saturday, a good time to reflect on consumption rather than engage in it.

Here a selection of Hangover Saturday thoughts gathered in the course of a restful day:

When people talk about what they are grateful for (on Thursday), they never say, “I’m grateful that I have so much stuff” or “My cup runs over because of those Manolo Blahniks I bought last spring” or “The best thing that ever happened to me is my Lamborghini.” It’s possible they’re just trying not to tip their hand, but I suspect we don’t hear those things because, actually, we all do know better.

Our current economic woes have had one advantage: to clarify the point that consumption is not a selfish indulgence but a patriotic duty, philanthropy flowing ceaselessly towards the wealthy, so that our expenditures can come back to us in the form of jobs, which may be defined as a palliative for massive debt or as a subsidy for patriotic duty, sadly insufficient.

Can't touch that 42% of greenhouse gas tied up in goods and food!

Whoever thought of the slogan “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” was not really clued in to the realities of our economic system. We do our bit to help with recycling at least in some parts of the country, but when we make an (unwilling and modest) start on the “Reduce” component, the whole country goes off the rails. That must be why the EPA report “Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Materials and Land Management Practices”—which is to say “How to Save the World by Tackling Consumption and its After-Effect, Garbage”—declines to estimate the impact on greenhouse gas production if we ate less and bought fewer things. Instead, it tries to figure out what difference it makes if, for example, we were to capture ALL the landfill gas that percolates up from our trash and convert it to electricity or if we recycle ALL the construction and demolition debris coughed up by the never-ending pursuit of bigger and better (as opposed to affordable) homes and gardens.

The opposite of consumption that most easily comes to mind on Hangover Saturday would be abstention. But consumption also has an opposite in creation, which is or can be blameless and much more fun than just saying no. The best place I know to get a feel for the truth of that proposition is S.C.R.A.P. (www.scrap-sf.org), an inspired program in San Francisco that diverts virgin merchandise from the landfill, makes it available for dirt cheap to all those with an urge to create rather than consume, and provides a bunch of jobs into the bargain.

What one might do with scrap

The San Francisco warehouse (on Newcomb between Toland and Selby) is huddled rather inauspiciously under Highway 280, but step inside and be greeted by a carnival of color and texture—papers, fabrics, buttons, doodads, figures, threads and yarn, birds, notions, glass, wood, boxes and containers, table legs and carpet squares,  stickers, ribbons, cards, and vinyl discs. On and on. Not everything leapt out at me as obvious fodder for art, including the industrial-sized potato mashers. For many things, it is immediately obvious why they are not in a store somewhere. In their original identity, the scraps that S.C.R.A.P. offers are not saleable, but as art materials they’re irresistible, guiltless, and very inexpensive.

Over it all hangs an exhibit of unpretentious art: scrap boxes emulating the best of Joseph Cornell, mobiles, a digestive tract laid out in flopping beakers and retorts, quilts, and many other works that demonstrate the virtues and joys of clean salvage.

L’ultimo che ho seguito mi pare sia stato quello del 2006 (o era il 2007?) . Adoro il suo process in questi progetti!

Ho potuto ammirare dal vivo una di queste sue meraviglie al CKU del 2008:

Qualche settimana fa ha proposto sul suo blog questo “December Daily”. Si tratta di un album che contiene una pagina per ogni giorno dal 1 al 25 di dicembre.

Il processo si compone di 3 fasi:

• la raccolta del materiale
• la creazione delle pagine
• lo sviluppo del contenuto durante il mese di dicembre.

Ali si raccomanda di preparare l’album prima dell’inizio del mese di dicembre in modo che ci si potrà concentrare sulle parole e sulle foto da inserire durante i giorni da ricordare.

Beh, sempre grazie a Francesca, ho iniziato a raccogliere il materiale.

Non riesco a mettere le foto del materiale in quanto la batteria della macchina fotografica è scarica e la sto ricaricando ora.

Prevedo di finire le copertine una di queste sere (di giorno è un delirio) in modo che poi mi possa concentrare sulla fase 2 e 3 .

Vi mostrerò man mano l’evoluzione!

…jag är U-S-E-L på att besöka och kommentera i era bloggar för tillfället! Tiden finns helt enkelt inte till. Särskilt inte nu när jag även jobbar fredagar. Hur i helsefyr ska det gå till hösten när jag börjar jobba heltid?!  Nåja, det är inget att gnälla om nu. =)

I dag efter jobbet var jag på Blomsterlandet och köpte 10 nya blommor och några krukor. När jag putsade alla fönster i går em/kväll så såg…..verkligen SÅG hur många hängiga (läs döda) blommor jag hade i fönstrena. Jag var även inne på Rusta och köpte 3 nya adventsgrejor (två stjärnor och en “adventskvistgrej”. Ser så fram emot fredag då jag tänker fuska och tända upp allt. Hur gör ni? Fuskar ni också lite eller är ni ståndaktiga och väntar ända till söndag? =)

Som vanligt har jag varit “tvungen” att skapa lite mitt i kaoset…”scrappa är som balsam för själen” läste jag någonstans för längesedan….so right! =)

Till SWE där utmaningen var att använda sina journalingstickers/stämplar. Utmaningen gick väl egentligen ut på att man skulle skriva en himla massa journaling…men det bidde inte så mycket text från mig. =)

Ett enkelt julkort jag gjorde på scrapträffen i söndags. På 8 timmar gjorde jag 2 st kort…hm…inte särskilt produktivt jag vet. Men jag hade det i alla fall supertrevligt med Henrietta. Tack för sällskapet, vännen! 

Andra kortet jag gjorde på träffen. Inte nog med att jag bara hann/hade inspiration till två kort….de är ju så fasligt avancerade också! =)

Kombinationsutmaning där kraven var rutigt papper (jag använde overlay istället), rubons (blomman och fjärilen) samt stickers (Grattis på din dag).

Materialutmaning “Koka soppa på en spik”. Man skulle leta i skåp och skrymslen efter något som inte är köpt scrapmaterial. Jag hittade detta metallhjärta som suttit på en ljusstake.

Färgutmaning- Röd. =)

Tema- Scrappa om det bästa med någon. Jag har scrappat om Noa och hans härliga humor. =)

Ouille le temps passe a une vitesse en ce moment. J’ai le sentiment de ne pas arrêter. Du coup pas trop de loisirs créatifs en ce moment. Nous profitons du mauvais temps d’automne hivernal suédois actuel pour repeindre le sous-sol de notre maison. Ce sont les premiers vrais travaux depuis que nous avons emménagé il y a un an si on ne compte pas la réorganisation de la cuisine. L’atelier de DH est presque fini avec la couche finale de peinture prévue ce soir en rentrant du boulot. Ensuite ca sera surement les escaliers et le couloir qui sont beaucoup trop sombres a notre gout et dont les couleurs aspirent le peu de lumière que donne l’unique lampe (vert fonce et gris fonce).

En attendant de nouvelles réalisations, je vous montre ma page faite pour le premier tour des JO C&S. Mon épreuve le bobsleigh. Les consignes :

Few days back, someone asked if this blog is dedicated to quilling. The obvious answer was NO. So, I took up the tasks which were submerged under the huge pile of work and the result was our new handmade nameplate.

Today, two years ago, we were united… So thankful for this blessing of having the Beloved in my life. So for Pink Sketches this week, I celebrated our union with this:

What we’re most grateful for this year as we celebrate is….come May next year, we’re having our little one join us…Yes, we’re expecting! So excited! Bub is growing well and having gone through the first trimester of desiring to sleep loads, we’re tremendously grateful for a smooth pregnancy thus far…. So if you had wonder why my posts were fewer in the last couple of months, mummy was resting, praising God for blessing us with our best creation ever…Bub…  I’ve stopped work at the florist, given it best to avoid carrying the heavy buckets of water, and have been spending time reading up on baby and reading to baby and of course, creating. We can’t wait for bub to arrive! Thank you God for everything!

I just got home from choir practice so I’m in a good mood. Have I mentioned how much I love singing in the church gospel choir? I just have to mention it again.

We had a good weekend here this weekend. I got to spend time with my best friend Betsy and chat with my fave cousin Jen. I finally finished the scrapbook of my brother Eric’s wedding to his beautiful bride Brittany also! Yesterday was spent at church, a bit at home, and then the church annual meeting. Does your church have a DJ and red velvet cake at their annual meeting?

It is Thanksgiving week so I’ve got my big to-do-list of what has to happen before we leave our house Wednesday evening for Fergus Falls. There is cleaning, laundry, packing, shopping, and some chex mix to be made! We’ll be spending Thanksgiving Day with 40+ Tungseths at the lake cabin. We’ll be making lefse and Christmas cookies on Friday, and going Christmas Tree cutting on Saturday! Lots of photo ops. No tree for us on Saturday though. We will stick with our artificial tree for another year. We have old wood floors and a male dog, so I don’t think we need to see what kind of disaster a real tree would be, although I would love to have our house filled with the smell of pine!

Today I spent some time organizing photos and putting them in albums. Between all the different online photo sales in the past couple months I was able to only pay the price of shipping for the photos from the past year and a half! I only have one scrap page done of 2008, but at least it’s started! I’ll get back to scrapping that, but also still need to figure out my plan for Christmas cards…

Mosaiken hittade jag på MiMa’s. papper från October Afternoon och Basic Grey. Jag har sprayat med Glimmer Mist “Wild Currant”, maskat med distress ink pad “Worn Lipstick”, och stänkt lite svart akvarellfärg här och där….

Ik ben nu ik meer tijd heb overdag ( met name maandag en vrijdag) begonnen met de kerstkaarten. Eerst even wat in huis doen en dan met de overige tijd aan het knutselen. Lekker met stempels en mijn copics stiften op basis van alcohol. Je kunt er de kleuren heel goed mee mengen ( met name de kleuren uit de zelfde kleurlijn ).

So I took a little detour in writing about some of the large cities I’ve been to in order to bring some attention the small details that make trips last forever.

I enjoy scrapbooking and the hobby has gotten very popular over the years, so whether you are an expert or just a beginner trying to figure out how to organize and display your photos in a special way, there are resources, workshops, camps and online tutorials to fit any time allotment you may have. Though I’ll admit I’m a few years behind on documenting my trips as far as photo scrapbooks go, it is exciting to get to some of the trips or in between family moments I may have forgotten about as life flies by at supersonic speed.

I just returned from a camp experience that I go to at least twice a year at a Camp Ozanam, a Christian Youth Organization camp in Carsonville, Michigan. Here a group of scrapbookers of all experience levels get together to share memories, ideas and the many tools that give your pages that extra pop.

I imagine there are camps/retreats, day-long sessions and even shorter classes giving inspiration to interested scrapbookers all over the U.S. and the world. Since scrapbooking can bring together so many other crafting hobbies such as stamping, card/invitation making, album making and even jewelry making, there are a lot of creative juices flowing at these events that you should definitely get a taste of.

These camps can be at actual youth camp locations, like mine are (all indoor lodging & crafting areas, don’t worry!), or they are often at halls, hotels and even host residences.

(TIP: Check with the organizer to see if there will be electrical outlets available for lighting, Cricut machines, phone chargers, radios etc. Also check to see if any food or drink will be included in the price as scrapping can surely make you work up an appetite!)

ehilà! come state???  Io mi sento moooooolto leggera (sopratutto il mio portafoglio!).. con un dente del giudizio in meno Me lo sono tolta ieri, questo è il terzo, devo toglierli tutti, quindi ormai ci siamo…. ma capperi sembra non finiscano mai!! E poi non sono dei denti i miei… ma dei mostri (parole del chirurgo!).. se c’è una cosa che non auguro a nessuno davvero è di subire questa tortura… sarà che io ODIO il dentista (e ho anche una certa fifa ogni volta!!), mah! Vi risparmio le foto, cmq, per darvi un idea la mia faccia al momento è molto simile a questo personaggio dei griffin…

Ogni volta che mi guardo allo specchio mi vien troppo da ridere, sono davvero comica…e orripilante… 

Vabbè, basta pensarci, ormai il dente non c’è più.. ma la voglia di paciugare, per fortuna, è sempre la stessa.. Essendo a casa da lavoro con tantissime cosine comprate a mondo creativo… cosa c’è di meglio che craftare un pochetto??  Mi sono messa subito all’opera per il concorso indetto da Improne d’autore, in palio ci sono un sacco di premiucci davvero stuzzicanti… e se la card viene anche solo  ammessa al concorso ci sono 2 biglietti gratis per Country life, una fiera che io adoro!! Ecco qui la card, fatta con i timbrini freschi freschi di mondo creativo

E’ la prima volta che faccio uno sfodo con i timbri (la carta bianca con scritto happy holiday) e sono davvero soddisfatta… penso proprio che lo farò più spesso e…anche se dalla foto non si vede.. anche qui ho trovato il modo per usare i miei adorati brillantini..da quando li ho scoperti ne sono diventata dipendente

Ma ora veniamo al capitolo Mondo creativo… la fiera in se quest’anno non mi ha entusiasmato più di tanto, mi sembra ci fosse meno roba….l’esperienza più bella invece  è aver potuto partecipare allo stand dell’ASI come aiutante…  Certo, è stato anche stancante e la confusione che c’era ha messo a dura prova il mio mal di testa… ma la gioia che si ha a fare qualcosa che ti piace, con delle persone fantastiche, condividendo tutte lo stesso hobby è davvero impagabile!! L’aspetto migliore è proprio questo, poter condividere e sentirsi parte di un gruppo, di una squadra ed è con questo spirito che rifarei altre 1000 volte la stessa epserienza! Ovviamente è anche merito di tutte le ragazze con cui sono stata allo stand se mi sono trovata così bene… Adriana, Daniela, Silvana, Sabry, Babo, Barbara S. Loretta, Francesca, Danio, Arianna, Stefania… grazie a tutte per aver contribuito a rendere queste giornate così divertenti!! E come non ringraziare anche Mommy e Sabry, che erano impegnatissime nei propri stand ma non per questo ci hanno tracurato e, anzi, ci sono venute in aiuto nei momenti di bisogno

Peccato davvero non aver portato la macchina fotgrafica.. mi sarebbe piaciuto averne qualcuna  in più… con Francy e Arianna per esempio, compagne di stand con cui mi trovo splendidamente … e con Gloria, Lara, Ely e Silvia  che sono venute  a trovarci allo stand… vabbè, sicuramente conserverò il ricordo di queste giornate nel cuore
