New School, also. Auschecken! 7/10

Old Pride

Earlier today, I was notified by a friend on last.fm that Pianos Become The Teeth might be playing a show in Columbus in January. I quickly made my way to their MySpace page where my highest hopes were sort of confirmed. While nothing has been finalized yet, I am incredibly excited for this show, especially since there is a rumored Max Levine Ensemble show planned in Columbus for a few days later.

Pianos Become The Teeth is a band from Maryland who recently signed to Topshelf Records (My Heart To Joy, Defeater). They’re an emo band who tint their sound with a lot of ambiance and beautiful soundscapes, not unlike Suis La Lune or Raein. While comparing a band to Raein might set the bar a little high, I think the energy the two bands put out are comparable. Since I’m seeing both bands live within a few weeks of each other, it’ll be interesting to see how the sounds and energy of both bands translate to live performances. Although both albums are full of excellent songs, one major standout is “Houses We Die In” off of Saltwater. The vocals sound so emotionally strained, mixed in with the mid-tempo, post-rock influenced music, that you can’t help but feel some kind of emotion. As I stated before, I’m incredibly excited to see this band live if their show does happen, and if it doesn’t happen in Columbus, I’ll probably travel to see it.

This is what i like! Something I just discovered, that I didn’t think existed in Canada. New Jersey type screamo, all the way out in Victoria, BC. This three piece was around from 1995 to 1998. At the time the band was formed, Paul was still doing Benchwarmer, but not for much longer.

Their first release was a self titled 7″ on Slow to Burn Records in 1995 (I think this may also have been their demo, but I’m not sure). Next year they put out a split with The Republic of Freedom Fighters on Buddy system Records. In 1997, came their big break for out of Canada fans. They recorded a 10 song demo tape, which some songs would end up being released on their second 7″ “The Relationship Between a 1/4 Note and a 1/8 Note” on The Mountain Cooperative. I think the other songs were used for their split with Miracle of 86 (but I’m not sure when that came out), on City Lights Records.
The whole works was compiled into a discography CD in 2007 in Clue #2 Records (I think the label is run by someone of the band, but I don’t know who). This compilation is really amazing. Great digipak with stickers and booklets, etc. I really suggest buying it, even if I posted it here. Totally worth it.

Well hey. I’m the new Brian on the block and music is the tits. It’s all I do and all I am, so I’m happy to join this blogical community to share it with you. In my spare time I enjoy a leisurely walk, making electronical music, playing real drums, and generally being awesome.

Afraid! is a post-hardcore band out of Italy. Upon downloading this I had expected a typical dose of 2000s Euro-Screamo, and, upon hearing the first few seconds of Goa I got something more like 70s psych rock than La Quiete. Megaloklift sounds like The Blood Brothers and Crystal Antlers co-writing the soundtrack to an old vampire sock hop movie. Snaking basslines slither around a guitar sound of hardcore punk riffs and walls of sound that blends with the church organs to create a sound at once both creepy and rock and fucking roll. Singing reverbs mystically around it all as yells like knives pierce the mix, the vocalist playing both the killer and the victim. Afraid! have managed to make a sound like none other, frantic, frightening, and rapid. The album’s a rather short affair, lasting a little over 24 minutes over twelve songs. Pay attention and hold on or the flick will leave the screen before you realize it.

Another of these irregular posts… Firstly, thanks to everyone who has come to any of the shows

Another of these irregular posts…

Firstly, thanks to everyone who has come to any of the shows I’ve been part of organising lately – the Hackett House show, Limited Express and Ni Hao at Jura, and La Quiete show at Jura. If you want to hear recordings from the two Jura shows check out here and here. Shaun Tenzenmen also took some good photos from the La Quiete show which are on flickr and ther’s some photos from the Hackett House show on the myspace.

Also, I have news on when the next Hackett House show is. Its going to be on Sunday 6th December, 1pm like usual and costing only $5 like usual. So far there’s only two bands confirmed – Nunchukka Superfly and Skinpin – but hopefully more will be sorted out very soon.

I’m also sorting out some shows for Tim Holehouse (UK) in December/January and for the Chris Burrows and Phat Meegz tour in late January. You’ll probably find out about them when I have the information.

Other things…

If you’re looking to get out of Sydney this weekend, or are already in Melbourne, Ladyfest is happening all weekend. There’s shows, art exhibitions, workshops and discussion panels. I’m not entirely sure which ones are all ages, at least one of the shows is called “Ladyfest All Ages Show” so that one definitely is. Maybe the exhibitions, discussion, workshops and another show is too? Check out the myspace for the full list of what’s happening and more information on what its all about.

YAPA have set up a new email list called unleashNOW to be a monthly update for subscribers to the Unleash magazine and any other young people who want to stay in touch with youth activism and YAPA staff generally. I’m not sure if there’s a quick way to subscribe to it, but if you go to the Unleash Magazine site and send a message to the contact email there it should work itself out. You can also download a pdf of the magazine too so you know what you’ll be getting yourself into.

Loud! Tribe, that group who organises all that stuff out in the Fairfield area, have recently started a radio show as well. The show is on 89.3FM 2GLF at 4:00 – 6:00pm Wednesdays. They even got a Facebook page up for it. Maybe you can even get them to play your music? Worth a try.

Also on the radio, it seems Indent are putting together a radio version of The Minor Chord on FBi. I don’t know how far they’ve got up to, last thing I know they were looking for people to get involved. Check out this post and maybe you will find all the answers.

Last but not least, friends in Singapore not long ago started up a new all ages venue/studio there called Blackhole212. Check out the blog for inspiration and if you find yourself in Singapore maybe there’s a show you can go to there, or just hang out with them and eat pisang goreng or roti pratha.

Bye bye!!

PS. I’m looking for a job. Anyone know of an option that isn’t Woolworths?

October 26– Hardcore band Miss May I stormed the stage of The Blender Theatre when they opened for Attack Attack! on the Shred Til You’re Dead Tour. Performing a set filled with high octane energy, intense breakdowns, and fierce hair-whipping, this band from Troy, Ohio was a captivating spectacle live.

Miss May I’s live performance can only be described as unique. As vocalist Levi Benton threw down intense guttural growls, he swung his long hair in unison with guitarist Justin Aufdenkampe, all the while bassist Ryan Neff and guitarist B.J. Stead frantically paced and jumped back and forth on stage, and drummer Jerod Boyd feverishly swatted away at his drums and licked his drumsticks– the band’s stage presence was extremely apparent.

Miss May I’s members worked well together on stage. Every member was perfectly on cue and their songs were rocking, for lack of a better term. Their setlist consisted of songs from their debut album, Apologies Are for the Weak, including Architect, Dance of Aera Cura, and newest single Forgive and Forget. They also played their popular cover of hip-hop singer Savage’s song, Swing, which was easily one of the best songs of the entire night– nothing is more entertaining than a metalcore cover of a hip-hop song that opens up a handful of mosh pits and get audience members crowd surfing.

While the band’s genre of music may not be for the feint of heart, they fit in perfectly with the rest of the bands of this tour, and although bands featured in a tour like The Shred Til You’re Dead Tour have a habit of blending in with each other (for example, Our Last Night), Miss May I’s set had the right balance of stage presence and skill to set them apart from the other bands. They played the best set of the night, and I cannot wait to see what they can do on a headlining tour of their own.

October 26– Hardcore quintet Our Last Night recently opened for Attack Attack! on the Shred Til You’re Dead Tour, which stopped at The Blender Theatre at Gramercy. The band put on a decent performance, but were sadly outshone by other bands on the setlist.

Our Last Night’s set was heavily influenced by their first major release, The Ghosts Among Us. Playing great songs, like Symptoms Of A Failing System and single Escape, the band performed fairly well, yet they did not have that much of a stage presence that I thought they would have. The band seemed to lack energy and charisma on stage, which was a disappointment.

Vocalist Trevor Wentworth did a tremendous job with his deathly growls and screams, especially when considering he is not even 18. Wentworth’s brother, Matt, provided clean vocals that broke up the harsh growls while still being extremely melodic and talented in itself.

With a tour like The Shred Til You’re Dead Tour, many bands from the same genre, or even the same label tour together– because of this, many of the bands seem to blend in with each other, unless they offer something to break up the monotony. Unfortunately, Our Last Night seemed to “blend in” with the crowd. They did not play a bad set in any way, yet they did not seem to offer anything that would allow them to have the best set of the night.

If Our Last Night did something to set themselves apart from the rest of the bands on the set, I would give them a high recommendation, as they are talented in what they do; however, their talent was overshadowed by the other bands of the set.

Maths are a band i have a lot of time for. They are, along with a few other select bands, carrying the (sadly limp) British screamo scene forwards into the realms of European standards. I have been listening to this band since their first tour CD release and their 6 song demo with song names borne out of Nietzsche verse. Their record company Holy Roar has been responsible for some of the biggest UK bands in punk territory, such as Gallows and Rolo Tomassi and Maths have only added more credibility to HR’s rostrum. Descent is crafted from sincerity and anxious beauty and is what i would describe as an intricate tapestry of an LP, with each track weaving dynamically around one strong, embittered thread which runs throughout the album. It is obvious that the band have put an awful lot of care and attention into shaping this record into a sonic epic and they have pulled it off with great aplomb – their finest work to date.

Durante setembro e outubro de 2007 a banda esteve em turnê com Escape The Fate, LoveHateHero, Before Their Eyes e Dance Gavin Dance na Black On Black tour. O Blessthefall disponibilizou uma nova música com seu novo vocalista, chamada “To Hell and Back”. (Texto po lastfm.com)

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in Thompson Library when I noticed that a girl sitting a few tables away from me had what I assumed to be a Transistor Transistor sticker on her laptop. After dropping a note off at her desk expressing my affection for Transistor Transistor and notifying her of this blog, I nearly sprinted out of the library, high as a kite on whatever chemical your brain releases after you do gutsy things. Once I was outside and confident any police officers following me would lose me in the crowd, I put my headphones on and turned this album way up.

Erase All Name and Likeness is one of those albums that kind of demands to be listened to at a high volume. Thrashy, technical punk is one of those musical genres that I pretend to profess to be knowledgeable about but in actuality probably know nothing about. I think I know what’s good when I hear it, however, and the song “Power Chord Academy” on this album is definitely a solid track, along with most other songs on this album. The technicality of the instrumentation shouldn’t be a turnoff to people who don’t have much of a background in hardcore, while the sheer power the vocals are delivered with should satisfy even the most devout follower of kvlt underground punx. This is definitely one of my favorite hardcore albums, and since Transistor Transistor keeps company with bands such as Hot Cross, Wolves, Converge, Circle Takes the Square, and Daughters, it’s easy to see that others hold a pretty high opinion of it too. If that doesn’t convince you, be aware that this band is made up of former members of emo legends Orchid and Bucket Full Of Teeth.

Coming back from my mini vacation yesterday, my friend Ben and I listened to punk the whole truck ride to and from the cities and ferry… and the last thing we put on was Alexisonfire, a band oh-so prominent at the end of my high school years and well in to the university days. And while I can’t say I’ve thrown on a screamo record in years (unless At The Drive In counts), hearing this really brought me back. After a day of great cycling and the emotion of saying goodbye to so many people I love and miss dearly, it was the perfect soundtrack; raw and heavy, with a large dose of youth energy. Not something I can listen to on the regular, but certainly welcome in the right time and place.

Heroin <<Heroin>>(1997 Gravity) | Interpunk 8.80달러
