Scot Sehlhorst published a Blog on ‘The Magic Rule of Seven’ It reports a thread of thin

Scot Sehlhorst published a Blog on ‘The Magic Rule of Seven’

It reports a thread of thinking, developed in the 1960s, that ignores the real content of the original research done in the 1950s. The response is necessarily long and so I have written what I consider to be the correct version of that blog.

In 1956, GA Miller performed a very valuable study on people’s ability to remember degrees of some physical measurement. He took a couple of dozen different judgemental situations; Colours in a spectrum, intensity of light, tone, music notes, music tones, levels of salt and sugar when tasting, temperatures etc. He increased the number of levels of a particular property in successive tests and recorded the point at which most people ceased to reliably remember/distinguish levels in that test. (“The magical number seven.”. The Psychological Review 63: 81–97.)

His analysis techniques were set up to do a different experiment. Despite the use of logarithmic scales etc, it became very clear that these tests caused problems for most people when the number of items to be remembered was within the range of 5 to 9. The distribution was NOT strongly consistent, but given the number of samples, could well have been Gaussian. From this he concluded that most people use about seven cells for storing short-term memory data.

It doesn’t take much more thinking to realise that the variation he perceived, was most likely due to the fact that most experiments were carried out by testing different people. In other words, the variations, as well as being due to different tests, also measured the variation from the timing of the test and the variation between the people taking the test.

This leads to the conclusion that most people do use about seven cells for storing short term memory and that any communicator can expect their audience to have a variation of about plus or minus two for any particular recall of their short term memory.

There are often two views about this rule, both misinterpreting what it says:

One view is given in Sehlhorst’s article “If you have more than seven items in a pull down list, you have failed.”. This sometimes extended to saying the ‘You can get away with nine’.

Amongst those who understand communications, a number of people recognise that the failure point is normally significantly below seven. This group, try to debunk the rule on the grounds that good ergonomics needs to work on a lower number, and the rules is misleading.</blockquote>

Application to Software

If the rule is interpreted statistically, it works rather well. Of course, the number of samples strictly rules out a Gaussian distribution, but as a rough guide, using a Gaussian to explain the rule is pragmatic. We draw a simple Gaussian centered on the value seven, and with a standard deviation of two.

If we draw a vertical line at 7, we cut the shape into two, so that 50% of the population lie below the line and 50% above. This says that if you have seven items in your list, 50% of your users (those above the line) will immediately recognise/remember all the items, The other 50% will struggle.

Now draw a line at 9; that is one standard deviation above seven. Note our statistics is NOT accurately Gaussian and so we only need ‘ball park’ figures. It is therefore good enough to say that 2/3 of the points lie in the range ’seven plus or minus two’; theoretically its 68.?% (Call it 2/3), That leaves 1/6 above the line at nine and 5/6 below it (call it 80%). So if you list nine items, ~20% of the audience will recognise the contents of the list as it opens; 80% will fail.

Now move the line down to 5.; Now 80% recognise the items in a flash and only 20% struggle. Getting better!

Move further down to 3. At this point, we are two standard deviations down; statisticians please forgive me! This occurs when 97.5% or something of this order of the population are
succeeding in a flash and very few ‘fail’.

Set the limit at 1 and almost everyone is firing.

(At this point, the use of Gaussian becomes ridiculous, because it predicts a finite probability of setting the limit at -1 and making sense. But the error is only a percent or two of your population, so do NOT get hung up on it. I use this technique when estimating risk on project work estimates. It is crude, quick and gives consistent, if NOT entirely accurate results.)

So now, the author, screen designer, slide drawer can choose just how much risk of losing their audience they wish to take. We can see why some people say that seven is too big; most people want a more that 50% of their audience keeping up with them.

Professor Herman Bondi, the Chief Scientist in Britain in the 1960s used this approach. He never talked about more than one thing in a lecture, He expanded it a few steps at a time, and you could nearly always remember every part of his lecture the next day. siehlhorst under the banner of ‘Tyler Blain’ actually praised a blog on writing blogs. The general theme was ‘Never include more than one topic in each article’.

Longer Lists

Miller also found another aspect that this theory predicts, and his paper shows that it also works in practice. Let us say that we want to make a list of 25 items or a screen with 25 fields displayed on it. We can break them into five sets of five, where the members within each set are all closely related. Now 80% of the audience can remember the five sets. Further, when they select a set, their short term memory reloads very quickly, and suddenly 80% of them remember the contents of that new set very rapidly. 64% keep up with the presentation of up to 25 items in a list; NOT bad.

The 25 items do NOT have to be divided into sets of 5. Variable numbers in each set give slightly different results for each set, but it still allows a larger number of items to benefit by the seven plus or minus two rule. It is also why we structure our screen designs into blocks of data.

Above about 25, these groupings cease to be so profitable. At this point, the diagram, screen, lecture slide or whatever becomes a ‘Map’. With maps, we find one town and then trace along some path till we get to the one we want to go to. We dont try to remember the routes from all towns to all others. We remember a few and then as we start driving to the destination, the next few turns and landmarks come back into our memory, and we actually can remember quite complex sequences, but now the ’seven plus or minus one rule’ is just a small part of our thought processes. In software, this is the point at which UML diagrams start to become useful; they are maps.

I do like this, it protects the Garmin well. It doest fit the charger in with the Garmin (although a tight fit) but does not fit or have anything that you can put the suction cup in or on. It would be nice if there was room for it or if there was a loop or something so they’re all connected. Other than that, I like it.

Image : http://www.flickr.com Home security screen doors are designed so that you can enjoy the feel

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Home security screen doors are designed so that you can enjoy the feeling of fresh air and cool breezes in summer, while the security of a conventional locked door. But they do the job? Many home security screen doors are easily compromised by a few quick kicks so it pays to do your homework, if it is a contract for the sale.

While all the doors in some form of safety barrier, just because a product is marketed as the marketHome security product that does not mean it is. In fact, if they fall by the internal security with many doors as home security, displays "sold far short of the security industry standards. A point also noted by the National Security Screens Association (NSSA) and the Australian Security Industry Association Limited.

So how do you get a good home security door from a bad one? What you need to search forin a good safety glass door?

When buying a home security, door to door there are several characteristics that are to include the materials of the door frame must be checked out made grille power, mesh type, used to develop the number of hinges and the lock.

From a professional point of view of security is a real home security door should be constructed of heat – strengthened (hardened) aluminum or galvanized and powdercoated steel. Not only are these doors stronger, they also offer greater protection against rust and corrosion, which results from extended exposure to the weather. Double-check the door to make sure it has reinforced corners and that the corner joins are fully welded to the door.

Preferably the home security screen door should have three or more hinges with fixed hinge pins that cannot be removed. For added protection make sure your home security door Hinges are mounted, is the fact the gap between the door and the frame to make the door difficult to minimize to jimmy.

Internal security should be stainless steel wire mesh with glass door and the door frames are attached either with screws made of stainless steel or Pac terminals. The ideal home security, mesh is either marine grade 316 mesh or 304-degree mesh. There are several mesh qualities on the market available, so check the rating to make sure it is at leastthis corresponds to the 316 or 304 degree mesh. The users of different types of mesh are debatable, what is more, but check the above apply and you can not go wrong.

Representatives of the two methods for securing the mesh on the door to argue that their system is superior to the other, but both a great job. The real thing, to ensure your home security door look is strong, the number of staples or rivets fastening the mesh on the door. While in most casescan not see this should be the specific door manufacturer able to build you the information, as most reputable manufacturers monitor home security, pride in their product specifications.

Another feature of a proper home safety glass door is a solid lattice. The grill should be at least 7 mm thick and appeared to be at all connected by the welds. A solid grill is only good if it's good to get attached to the security door. A good indicator of theStrength is to check whether the grill was welded or riveted on, look at the welding, the stronger alternative.

The last aspect is the internal security with door locks. A proper home security door lock should be a five-pin cylinder or equivalent, and operated the key. The strength in the overall strength of the home security door, I recommend a door with a three-point locking. The three-point home security door lock makesit extremely difficult, and the door off its hinges, but also to cut the burden of violence attempted by the person who used to break through the door is spreading.

Home security screen doors would be an important part of your overall home security and the front line of defense against intruders.

Here is part 4 of my 20 second-reviews of all the films we have rented from Lovefilm since our subscription started.

Semi-Pro
30 December 2008

As a BIG fan of Anchorman and Zoolander (and Will Ferrell generally), I was looking forward to this. Whilst Blades of Glory made me laugh a lot, this effort fell short. It was funny, in places, but it had nowhere near the re-watchability (invented word!) that Anchorman has. Woody Harrellson provided some entertainment also but since I am straining to remember anything in the way of plot or jokes, it can’t have been very memborable. As the great Randy Jackson would say, it was just aiit for me, dog. Would watch again without protest but am unlikely to go out of way to do so.

Wanted
13 January 2009

I couldn’t resist this unflattering picture of Angelina – she is pulling a fairly ridiculous face which is fitting because this film is fairly ridiculous. I still really enjoyed it, ridiculousness notwithstanding. James McAvoy is one of those actors that seems to go down well with the ladies despite his less than classic good-looks. He is pretty charming, I suppose. But I think his inclusion in the film help balance things out and made you root for the character more than a Ryan Reynolds or [insert you own superficial action hero here]. It was great fun and I would definitely like to see this again, preferably in HD.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
13 January 2009

I like this a LOT more than I was expecting. At the time I watched it, I only knew Jason Segal from Knocked Up, having never watched How I Met Your Mother or Freak and Geeks (I am remedying the first watching it daily on E4). I hadn’t really watched Veronica Mars either, so seeing the usually perky Kristen Bell as the bitchy and eponymous Sarah Marshall probably did not have the impact it could have had. That said, I DO know Mila Kunis from That 70s Show and Family Guy and I love her. She made this movie for me. It was both funny and sad. Russel Brand was even alright in it although I do cringe whenever there is British stunt casting. Would happily to see again.

Gone Baby Gone
14 February 2009

I am not sure we actually watched this on Valentine’s Day as the date above suggests since these dates are the dates the DVDs are returned to Lovefilm – I hope not since this is not really romantic fair. What it is, though, is bloody good film making from the excellent cast (Casey Affleck was just superb as was Amy Ryan who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the mother whose child goes missing) to the tight script and wonderful direction by Ben Affleck. This film broke my heart a little and stayed with me for ages after. I really want to see this again.

Michael Clayton
18 February 2009

I can’t remember the point at which George Clooney stopped being fun, cute Dr Ross / Ocean’s Eleven cheeky chappie but somewhere along the way, The Cloon became not just respected but credible and powerful. The subject matter was not necessarily that exciting on the surface of it, but before it, I was hooked. Richard Scickel (Time Magazine film review) said this:

A morally alert, persuasively realistic and increasingly suspenseful melodrama, impeccably acted and handsomely staged by Tony Gilroy.

I completely agree! I will watch this again someday I expect – despite how much I liked it, I am bound to be reluctant to watch again for the same reason I was reluctant to watch in the first place – because it seems a very dry subject.

For some time I have been getting my TV online, principally with the BBC IPlayer. I also receive ITV

For some time I have been getting my TV online, principally with the BBC IPlayer. I also receive ITV content, albeit problematically, using the ITV Player. But for some reason I was never able to get the Channel4 4OD service to work.

After selecting a programme to watch I would be presented with an empty video window, a “Loading content” message and nothing else. It didn’t matter whether I used Vista or Linux Mint, Firefox or Internet Explorer, the result was always the same – a sort of black screen of death as shown in this screenshot.

Of course I Googled the problem but found no fix. I could see from the general web chatter that others were having the problem but, clearly, it was a minority issue and there was no obvious solution.

Eventually I saw a reference to a test link that pointed to the url “realmedia.channel4.com” and clicked on it. I expected some kind of test page response or, at worst, perhaps an invalid request or maybe a 404 not found error. Instead nothing happened at all. The click went nowhere. This provided the clue to the problem solution.

After checking my hosts file I found that “realmedia.channel4.com” was being redirected to my localhost at 127.0.0.1 – i.e. nowhere. And this was the reason that 4OD wasn’t working. After commenting out that entry in the hosts file 4OD worked perfectly.

How did this redirection get into the hosts file? I posted a previous blog called “Using The Hosts File To Ward Off Web Attacks” which described how you can download a hosts file from this site to redirect hundreds of well known bad site urls to localhost at 127.0.0.1. This redirection makes these bad sites inaccessible and is a great enhancement to security on the PC generally. However it seems that, for some reason, “realmedia.channel4.com” is included in the hosts file as a bad site url thereby preventing 4OD from working. I’m not sure why the entry for 4OD is considered a bad site that needs to be redirected but it is, as of the date of this post, still being included in the download.

So if you have a problem using the Channel4 4OD service as described above do check your hosts file to see if “realmedia.channel4.com” has been redirected. If you find that this is the case then either removing it or commenting it out will hopefully fix the problem.

Of course now I have to find something on 4OD that I consider worth watching. Sadly, from what I can see, it appears to be some kind of landfill site for the dross that is celebrity culture. But that’s another rant altogether.

The Boris Karloff blogathon is now loose upon the world. You can read more about the week-long event here and the first post here, which includes a message from Boris’ daughter Sara Karloff.

I’ll be contributing at least one post sometime this week, although I hope to get two done if time permits. I do love me some Karloff.

Hope to hear from some of you here or on Facebook, Twitter, or wherever else. And I’m looking forward to reading some of the more than 100 various bloggers who are joining in.
