I have used a few programs in the past that automatically upload screenshots to your website, but I think ScreenGrab, so far, is the best. ScreenGrab is a free piece of software developed my someone named Mikey that I know on the Wyldryde IRC Network. The application, for Mac OS X (Windows and Linux versions are made by a different developer), uploads screenshots automatically to your website. All you have to do is install the software, put in some FTP and set some options as you like it. You can download this software from apps.mikebuntu.info. The screenshot below is the program it self and it automatically uploaded to my website via ScreenGrab.

what i'm not certain about:  does this mean google voice works on the iphone now?

my suspicions is that it does not.  even though it was recently announced that google voice will work on iphones.

my understanding is that google voice will work through a web based app that one navigates to on their iphone.  seems fishy to me.  then again, google has pulled off some miraculous tech.  wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled out another game changer.

Expressive Media Express is a weekend long interactive slate of programs designed to encourage creative use of digital tools and simultaneously showcase Chicago’s energetic New Media community. The opening night of the program will include a screening of Chicago New Media works as part of the Screen Grab series developed by Cates and O’Brien (screengrab.tumblr.com). This series aims to connect the experimental cinema and New Media communities in Chicago by showcasing online work in a traditional cinema venue.

In the first workshop, entitled BentBox, has children circuit bend toys to change the sounds they make, learning to reshape electronics. At the next day’s workshop, Stepmania School, digital music composition and game programming will be taught in the context of making your own DIY (Do It Yourself) games and electronic music.

These software and hardware skills put the basic tools of digital media in the hands of kids at an early stage.

Expressive Media Express is part of Chicago Artists Month 2009, the fourteenth annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community. In October, more than 200 exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks take place at galleries, cultural centers and arts buildings throughout the city. So I’m going to briefly talk about Firefox add ons (also called extensions) today. For those of you living under a rock “Firefox” is a web-browser similar in function to “Internet Explorer” or “Netscape” or “Safari” or “Opera” or “Chrome”. Actually, these days there is a huge selection of web-browsers. Comparisons between them will be left to a future post.

The Firefox web browser allows for the use of “add ons”. Add ons are essentially little programs written by third party companies that work within the Firefox web browser and add extra functionality. I’m going to discuss my favorite add on, which is called Screengrab.

Now there are literally thousands of ad-ons for Firefox. To check them out and instructions for installing them you can go here.

Screengrab allows you to copy an entire web page or a portion of a web page either to the clipboard (which allows you to paste the copied area into a document or another file) or to an image file to save to a drive.

This is helpful for several reasons. When you come across some page on the internet you’d like to save or have for future reference you can easily bookmark the site or copy and save the URL. The problem is that the page may change or be removed in the future. Some pages change daily, while others may stay the same forever. If the web page that your URL link points to is deleted or moved, then essentially its gone.

With Screengrab, you can highlight an area of the page and save it to an image file, so even if the page is removed or changed later, you still have a record of what was there. Very useful for documenting various mistakes or areas of concern on a web page. Think of it like clipping an article from a newspaper. It’s also better than print screen because it can save an image of the entire page. Print screen will only save what’s visible on the monitor and may not keep the formatting correctly. It’s also great if you want to save a portion of an image on a web page, but not the entire thing. Simply select from the Screengrab icon in the lower right corner of the window: Save, Selection. Then highlight the area you’d like to save and let go of the mouse. You can save the resulting image file as either a PNG or JPG.

No Photoshop to edit a ‘Print Screen’ capture? Screengrab is a Firefox add-on that captures what you can see in the bowser, either the entire page, just a selection, or a particular frame. It saves the capture as a decent sized JPG that can then be dropped in a doc to go up to the boss or over to the client.

Got wind of this on Mashable the other day. I’ve used a number of screen-recording tools before, but Screenr is really slick and the files are a decent size. Perfect for recording an instructional video to walk a colleague or client through an unfamiliar set-up.

Need to add subtitles to a video? With nothing to buy or download, dotSUB is a browser-based tool enabling subtitling of videos on the web into and from any language. Highly recommended for an all-too-familiar tricky requirement. They even have ‘Scots’ language on there, though nothing has been uploaded yet. Race you!

Lincoln Christmas Market Website

I’m particularly pleased with the Lincoln Christmas Market website. Launched mid July 2009, it’s self hosted on a WordPress MU install. The idea behind it is to provide a platform to easily release information about the market as it becomes available, be very customisable for the City Council and also promote discussion and involvement. There are plans to use it to liveblog the actual market, posting pictures and video as they are taken. Hopefully I’ll post up about this when it happens as I should be involved!

I’d also like to point out that the pic in this post was taken using the Screengrab! plugin for FireFox. This is a doody little plugin that, with a single click, can take a grab of the current view of any web page, the whole page or a selected portion of the page. This saves you having to trim any unwanted junk out or stitch together a screenshot in Photoshop. Very cool and a real timesaver!

Well, kids, just in time for July 21, I thought I’d share my favorite Firefox add-ons. What do Firefox add-ons have to do with July 21? Not a damned thing. So sit down and shut your pie holes.

Long-time readers know that I’m a Firefox junkie. I migrated over to the open source browser several years ago after Microsoft’s Internet Explorer navigation issues finally annoyed the living piss out of me — the principal nuisance being the freakin’ clicking that sounded whenever I typed a new address into the search bar.

I stayed with Firefox because it offers a sweet butt-load of (often user-created) add-ons. I’ve downloaded and used literally dozens of them over the years. Most ended up getting deleted after a few days of use. Below I share those that have withstood the test of time. (Yeah, that last sentence was lame. Bite me.)

Adblock Plus
This is a must-have. It blocks the majority of irritating invade-your-screen ads that inhabit a good portion of today’s websites. But if you want to load ads on a page, because you want to support a favorite blog or website with advertising, you can change the settings and allow ads for specific sites. It’s biggest limitation? It doesn’t block Flash-based ads.

ScreenGrab!
This is a simple screenshot add-on that lets you snap pictures of the browser screen. You can save the screenshot in png or jpg formats. It’s very handy when you need to copy an on-screen receipt or to keep a record of [insert socially-unacceptable reference here].

Download Helper
Of all the add-ons in this list, this one is my favorite. This sweet little add-on lets you download just about anything that displays in your browser: photos, files and, most importantly, videos. In fact, while I type this, Download Helper is saving eight YouTube videos to my hard drive.

DownThemAll!
Download Helper lets you download hundreds of files at a time. It includes more filter options then I’ll ever have use for — Hey, I just wanna download pictures into my “Horse porn” folder, you know? The really big plus? It’s waaaay faster than Firefox’s native download manager. Sweetness.

Alright, this post has taken way too long to write. So, go install this stuff, or something. Or don’t.

Puede capturar cualquier Java o Flash embebido en una página, pero para ello se requiere de Java en el navegador.

Intro

Screengrab is a Firefox add-in that captures (save or copy) anything in the Firefox browser as a picture. You can save an entire page, what is visible or select what you want to save. In this example we are going to save a Google map as an image.

Install Stronggrab

1. To install go here
2. Select Add to Firefox
3. Select Install
4. Select Restart Firefox
5. Select Screengrab Options to specify whether you want to save it as .png or .jpeg
6. Close the Add-ons window
7. At the bottom right of the browser you will see an icon for Screengrab

Try It – Save large Google maps

1. Go to Google Maps
2. Open a map of the location you want
3. Zoom in and out for the purpose you want the map for
4. Select "link" at the top right of the map display
5. Select "Customize and preview embedded map"in the pop-up window



6. Select "Custom"
7. Specify the width and height you want



8. Scroll down and copy the html code



9. Open your favourite text editor and paste the code in it
10. Save the file in html format e.g. as maps.html
11. Open this file in Firefox. Once loaded you will see the map in the size specified in Step 7.
12. Click on the Screengrab icon at the bottom right of Firefox window
13. Select Save > Complete Page/Frame…



14. A Save screenshot as… dialog box will appear soon. Save the image as JPG or PNG.

Conclusion

That’s it! The map is save.

So, before the Screengrab went belly-up, we posted our consensus list of The Top Ten Best Movies Ever…which prompted our new pal Adam DiLeo to forward his own “shameless, lowbrow list of favorite movies, in no particular order.”  Please to enjoy!

The Thing – The rightly vaunted creature effects still hold up relatively well for the most part, and wunderkind Rob Bottin certainly deserves a medal for churning out all those Gooey McNasties all by himself, but that’s not what hooked me. I found this movie around 2002 when my ex-girlfriend started dating one of my roommates. All our friends (not to mention my other roommate) got caught up in a messy custody battle, trying to stay close to both of us without taking sides, despite my ardent and perfectly rational attempts to demonstrate that she was a demon sent from hell to corrupt all mankind. I got all sorts of withdrawn and paranoid. I took to locking myself in my room and planning elaborate revenge scenarios wherein I would blamelessly get my usurping roommate horrifically maimed while exposing my ex to all the world as the opportunistic succubus she was. And then we’d all go out for pizza. At some point during those fevered months I came across The Thing, which at its core is a movie about working toward a common goal without knowing who you can’t trust. How do you go about getting things done when you can’t do them by yourself, but everyone around you is a potential alien monster/ex-girlfriend sympathizer? I watched it over and over, seeing in the bleak landscapes my own sense of isolation and falling in love with the doomed ensemble needing, but unable, to rely on each other. It got me through a tough winter. Now, years later, any damage the ex did is long forgotten but the movie still has a special place on my shelf.

Rear Window – A Stewart/Hitchcock collaboration is the filmmaking equivalent of pretzel and nacho cheese Combos – they’re perfect for each other, and I always wish there were more. My personal connection is that I spent a hot Brooklyn summer laid up with a broken foot and I totally spied on my neighbors. I got more naked people, but less murders. You win some, you lose some. Oh and for the record: fuck you, Shia LaBeouf. Everything you touch turns to shit.  [Testify! -- Ed.]

Jurassic Park & The Matrix – Sure, they’re separated by a few years and they’re vastly different types of science fiction, but they do have some important things in common. They both boast scores by the wonderful Don Davis. (Thank you, IMDB) but mostly I put these two together because, with the possible exception of Terminator 2, these movies more than any others opened my eyes to the magical possibilities of digital effects. Maybe the cool factor of The Matrix’s cinematic aesthetic was due in large part to fancy camera tricks, and super slo-mo (with liberal amounts of green lighting and black leather), and some of Jurassic Park’s best moments were done with practical effects, but in both cases the blending of the real and the unimaginable proved to me that on film, anything was possible. Or at least it would be soon.

Super Troopers – “Who wants a mustache ride??”

The Last Dragon – Guilty pleasure? Totally. But there is no earthly reason Taimak shouldn’t have become a huge star after this, and Sho Nuff is just about the awesomest character in the history of the universe. I’ve been to Harlem – there are no Shoguns, but there really should be.

Jaws – Robert…effing…Shaw. “You go in the cage? Cage goes in the water? Sharks in the water. Arrrrrr shark…!”

Quigley Down Under – Tom Selleck reminds me of my dad, who is my all-time hero. And in his Quigley we have the ultimate American ideal – tall, tough, quiet and honorable – shown in the starkest relief possible, as a reluctantly imperialistic force of nature, foreshadowing the dominance of American culture and military might with every long-range rifle shot, and doing so with an unwavering benevolence and humility. Here’s hoping someday we can all live up to Quigley’s standards, and my dad’s.

The Goonies– Speaking of parents, when I got sick as a kid, my mom would bring me 7-UP and The Goonies. It still makes me feel better, I can do spot-on impressions of both Chunk and Sloth, and I can sing every word of that Cyndi Lauper song. Try me.

Aliens & Predator – It’s probably no secret at this point, but I’m a giant, steaming pile of nerd. I enjoy even the worst movies as long as they have superheroes, aliens, zombies, alien superhero zombies, or Zac Efron. Just kidding, I don’t even know what Zac Efron looks like. My point here is just that both of these movies melt face from start to finish and badasses kick the crap out of relentless alien killing machines. Predator is obviously a ridiculous movie (“Get to ze chappaaaa!”), but its novel concept and adroit use of camera effects and creepy jungle drums really sell the show, more than making up for the lack of subtlety in dialogue and acting. And Aliens, well, let’s just say I’ve given a lot of thought to tying James Cameron to a bed and forcing him to pitch movie ideas for me day and night. Don’t tell me the ink will smear Jim, I will break your goddamn legs.

Scream – Scream was the first time I saw funny and scary blended together perfectly. Plus after the midnight showing I went to in high school, I got home to a dark house with my parents asleep. As soon as I walked in, the phone rang. But there was no one there. Then it rang again. If it was a friend having a little fun with me, I’m glad they never told me. You can’t put a price on a good scare.

The Usual Suspects – I watched The Usual Suspects again a few months ago with my girlfriend who had never seen it. I was gleefully anticipating her shock and amazement at the final reveal, but I failed to consider that by now everyone knows who Keyser Soze is, and thus she was utterly ambivalent bordering on asleep. Someday I’m gonna trek into the rain forest village of one of those lost tribes with a DVD player and the special editions of Usual Suspects and The Sixth Sense. And a translator. They will be BLOWN AWAY.

Rocky – I probably could have tossed Rudy in with this one; both movies remind me that I’ve probably aged past my chance at the whole improbable-rise-to-glory thing. Still, if I ever hit a home run in my slow-pitch softball league, I am totally screaming, “Adrian!”

Para los que nos dedicamos a bloguear cualquier posibilidad de ahorrar tiempo a la hora de hacer los posts es siempre bienvenida. Desde que me he animado a comentar algunas utilidades de las que me encuentro por internet me está siendo especialmente útil una de las posibilidades que ofrece ScreenGrab, un addon para Firefox.

En realidad lo que todo el mundo comenta sobre este addon es la posibilidad de capturar webs enteras de arriba abajo (incluido lo que no entra en el monitor) convirténdolas en un PNG. Yo a esto la verdad que no le encuentro mucha utilidad. Sin embargo incluye una opción que me encanta: capturar una porción rectángular definida por el usuario. Por ejemplo, si encuentro ScreenGrab mientras navego con Firefox y me interesa para hacer un post sólo tengo que hacer clic derecho para obtener este menú:

A continuación se habilita la utilidad para seleccionar el rectángulo y poder decidir nuestra captura:

Tras decidir dónde se guardará la imagen habremos obtenido sin ningún tipo de intermediarios la imagen que necesitamos para decorar nuestro post. Eso sí, sin posibilidades de aplicarle ningún efecto del tipo sombra, rotación…

En este caso he obtenido este PNG para crear la imagen que encabeza el post.

Lo tengo tanto en Windows XP como en Linux Ubuntu 8.04 y funciona a la perfección en los dos sistemas.
