Here is another “birthday shirt” that I finished this week for my friend, Melissa. Her daughter, Morgan, is having a karaoke sleepover and she wanted to have shirts printed for the girls. The design shows a microphone and the text, “I rocked it at Morgan’s 11th Birthday Bash!” I screen-printed 13 hot pink shirts with black ink.

I got in the mail yesterday my commission from Jim Lawson. I asked him after the interview for this

I got in the mail yesterday my commission from Jim Lawson. I asked him after the interview for this stellar drawing. It only cost $60, and the money was more than worth it for this beautiful piece that is now my favorite in my collection. To be just a super creep, I attached the stickers that Lawson wrote my address and his address on to the print on the back for when it’s framed.

I forgot to turn my camera’s resolution up, so some of these pictures are (crisply) blurry.

Some Show and Tell!

Doesn’t that look fantastic! I was so happy when I took this out of the cardboard that I just stared at it for a good ten minutes despite having guests over that I hadn’t seen for a year!

Close up on Leo.

Lawson did such a kickass job on this commission that I’m really considering another one. Maybe I’ll convince my sister to buy me one since she owes me a couple presents for various things.

Oh, I also got a print by Albert Rothstein off of eBay in the mail yesterday. I ordered a bunch of artwork off of eBay in addition to this that I’ll soon be getting in the mail, and I ordered a Michael Dooney Leonardo Sketch!

James Nares, long-time Durham Press friend and collaborator , returned to the studio recently to complete work on his new screenprint, THUMP. This new edition is the 13th print James has created at Durham Press, and he and JP (the master printer here) continue to push the dynamic dimensionality of his painted brushstrokes into amazing, rich, vibrant screenprinted editions. When asked recently about his experience of working at Durham Press and with JP on this process, James said:

Working at Durham Press is really a pleasure. JP’s knowledge of, and experience with the silkscreening process is second to none, and working with him is a collaboration, as with another artist. He has come up with an ingenious method to create screen prints of my brush strokes which have all the body and tones of an actual, painted brush stroke, but without the use of half-tone…

For those maybe unfamiliar with the screenprinting process, creating a halftone is the process of turning all the tone in an image into various sized and spaced dots in order to create the tonal variation. This allows all of the tone to be printed at once and is what you are looking at when you see a black and white photo printed in the newspaper, for example. What gives James’ prints the fluidity, the subtle shift in tone and the overall richness of color is that is is not printed as a halftone, but is rather broken down into 10-15 layers of varied tone and color and then rebuilt, through printing each layer one on top of the other. It is a complicated process, but creates a seamlessness in the color and tonal shifts that would not be possible otherwise.

To see THUMP as well as some of the other work James has produced with Durham Press, please visit our booth at the IFPDA Print Fair in New York City. The fair is held at the Park Avenue Armory and runs from November 5th – November 8th, 2009.

Also, James film Rome in ‘78 is currently being shown at MOMA as part of the film exhibition, Looking at Music: Side 2. The next screening will be on Saturday, November 28th at 7:30 p.m. The film, according to the MOMA website, is “a narrative about the Roman emperor Caligula set in a shabby Manhattan apartment, proposes an analogy between ancient Rome and modern America as cultural empires. The image below is a still from the film.

I got the most wonderful e-mail today! A college student had seen the UNE Peregrine Press show with her class and was asked to contact the artist on a piece she liked to try and get some more information about the work. And she chose my piece! It is a screenprint titled “Doubletop,” She said it was the one that most interested her. I am flattered and excited to have this kind of conversation with an art student about my work. Here are her questions:

"Doubletop" Screenprint, Exhibited at the UNE Art Gallery

1. What inspired your color choice?

2. Does the blue square represent anything?

3. Was this print inspired by a memory?

4. Was this print part of a series?

Here is what I wrote in response:

Dear Abby,
Thanks for seeing our show and liking my print. I hope this answers your questions.

The print was inspired by a discussion on the 3rd century philosopher, Plotinus. In an essay about art, he wrote that religious art should be void of distractions of shading, figure-ground relationships, perspective, and light source. He thought that religious art, to be most clear and understood, should have all objects evenly lit, presented flat and 2-D, and transparent to each other spatially. I thought, that printmaking is the perfect medium to achieve this because printmaking is inherently flat, and by adding a transparent medium the colors become transparent to each other and light. So to answer questions 1, the very transparent, overlapping colors were used in response to the essay by Plotinus. I chose the browns and grays to correspond to the rocks and trees and earth they were representing. The yellow was made to represent the color of sunshine. The white space void of ink. One of my first professors believed a good print should always let some of the paper show through the ink, and that has been adopted into my own atheistic values.

To answer question 2, yes the blue square does represent something. It is a blue blaze, the little blue rectangle painted on trees to mark the trail. The blue blaze is something I use a lot in my work in the past few years. I like the repetition of a blue blaze along the trail and have focused on that repetition in previous work. The blue blaze has also become a symbol to me for my life and the paths I follow in it. You can tell that it is important because I used and opaque ink, with is very different from the transparent inks used everywhere else.

In response to your third question, as I mentioned before, Plotinus made these rules for religious art. So this is my own spiritual art. My religion is often found in nature when I’m hiking. This particularly scene is from a hike in Baxter State Park. A very good friend and I were hiking Doubletop Mountain. This mountain has two peaks, with a little trail between them. This depects that part of the trail between the two peaks, because it was so peaceful and beautiful and unlike anything I’d seen before.

And to answer question 4, this isn’t part of a series, but the blue blaze does come from a series called “Pattern and Path.” You cans see some of that on my site :
http://www.rachelchurch.net/#ppgallery

The series was more abstract, focusing on patterns and repetition, while “Doubletop” I defiantly presented as a recognizable scene. While they are not from the same series, all this work has similar roots in nature, hiking and my relationship with that. I have shown both work together as one cohesive exhibit.

I hope this is helpful!

Rachel

*****

I wonder now if she realizes that the artist she’s talking with is only a few years older than she, and how that would change her opinion of the work.

These background washes are inspired by a trip I took to Portland, OR that I photographed over the summer. I am planning on overlaying a hand drawn aerial map depicting the gardens on top. You can create a watercolor monoprint on your screen by simply painting on watercolors or using watercolor pencils, allowing them to dry, and using transparent base to push the color through. Really cool technique for some interesting effects.

This past weekend I decided to venture on a quest to figure the whole registration thing out with screen printing. It seemed simple enough, I just never really gave it a try. All of my previous prints never really required registration and the ones that did, I just eyeballed it because I was only making one or two prints.

For this print I kept it two colors. I assembled the image using various drawings from my sketchbook that I have been wanting to use for some time now. The registration went rather smoothly thanks to some pointers from Sean Tucker, but the fact that my squeegee was not big enough turned it into a rather frustrating experience. Luckily in the end, I was able to obtain a larger squeegee and finish the prints. I kept the run fairly small and ended up with about 7 decent prints.

Also, be sure to check out Art Walk downtown tomorrow night! Jimmy will apart of AIGA’s Atomic Sketch in the Old Library, and our friend Karen Dessire will be showing her work at the Printing.com store.

I was working on one of my B + W Photo to Screen Print editions, when it became clear that the outcome was going to be a disaster. I think it’s probably the large section of salmon color that I had printed first to be the gum drop shape of the dress. I overlaid a sepia for the vintage look – which just leaves a gross taste in your mouth looking at it. There are definitely cool parts though! The house section, the sky. I ended up drawing on one of the prints and kind of loving to hate it. The rest i’ll use for testing watercolor monoprints.

Remember these critters? Well, way back at the beginning of this year I spent a couple of days at the wonderful Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier (AGA) and made a limited edition screenprint of them. After a nine month gestation period (I’m not sure what they’ve been up to for the past nine months in the dark seclusion of their A1 storage box!) they have finally found their way into the world, and more specifically in to my brand-spanking-new etsy shop.

The AGA is a fully equipped printmaking studio in the centre of Amsterdam, which I am very happy to have found and very grateful to have access to since completing a screenprinting course/workshop there towards the end of last year. The workshop was very informative and a lot of fun, and the studio spaces are fantastic! These two ‘Curiosity Cabinet’ projects are the only things I have printed there since completing the workshop so I am very much hoping to get back to the AGA soon for more printing fun and experimentation… it has been too long!

The Wertzateria *loves* Halloween. Seriously. More than Xmas, more than Thanksgiving. Halloween is the national Weirdo Holiday, and I embrace it fully.

This year, I’m celebrating by doing a small run of these posters for my friends Karl and Larry, who spend all year working on their contribution to the Halloween Madness. It’s called ‘The Driveway Follies‘, and it’s quite a marvel. They set up a small stage in their driveway in which they perform with hand-made marionettes – the kind I loved when I was a kid – and it’s just charming as all get-out. Watch carefully for the clown who rips his own clothes off to reveal his skeleton (without missing a single step of his spooky dance).

Here’s a color sketch for the poster. It’ll be two colors on orange paper. It’s a tribute to Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, Australian Illustrator of children’s books. [edit: The posters are done, and you can getcherself one here!]

Here’s my brother and I in 1972, very much looking forward to bellies bloated with 1000 tiny candy bars (and 300 smarties). We used to spend hours drawing perfect haunted houses (complete with ghosts, graveyards, bats, vampires, etc.) and listening to “Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House“.

To provide the soundtrack for your happy haunts, The Argyll Adventure Tree is serving up some macabre delights on October 1 from 5-7 pm on Ninth Floor Radio. This is a co-broadcast with UB, the theme is “Spooky“, and it should be a hoot and a holler. Give us a listen! Last year’s Halloween show is also up and available for download.

I did a quick search, and came up with some amazing Halloween blogs from folks who are even more obsessed with Halloween than I. Check out the Franklin Mint Blog, or WFMU’s Beware of the Blog.
