Knapp zwei Stunden hausgemachtes D.o.S. auf die Ski Challenge Download-Server, weil man die Download-Datei partout nicht auf kompetente Portale mit performanten Servern verteilen mochte oder mal über Bittorrent nachgedacht hat (ja, sowas ist gerade bei Hochlasten nützlich!) und man beim ORF offenbar nicht den Nutzer und seine Bedürfnisse im Blick hat, sondern das Geschäftsmodell im Vordergrund steht.

Nun gut, die Download-Page vom ORF mit mehreren Mirror-Servern steht. Nach wie vor geht der Download der 45 MByte großen Exe-Datei schleppend langsam voran.

The default Ubuntu screenshot software isnt really something spectacular. Also, it really doesnt have many options. For example, if you want the screenshot of just a window and not of the entire desktop, you’d be pretty much stuck if you were using the default screenshot app, as you would have to use some image editing software like GIMP to modify the screenshot to suit your needs.

No more… Say hello to Shutter! The perfect screenshot tool. Lets you take screenshots of windows, notifications (and even panels!). Has loads of options and is really useful.

This is how you install it:

Go to Ubuntu Software Center from your GNOME menu and search for ‘Shutter’, follow the links and install it! Like so:

Alternate method for users who prefer to use the terminal:

Type the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install shutter

And after the installation, you’ll find Shutter installed in the ‘Accessories’ section of the GNOME menu.

Simple – I used, Chromixfox, Total ReChrome to customize my Firefox to look like Chrome browser.

At least that’s what Facebook tells me. You see, today while I was updating my phone number, I also updated my gender… kind of. You see, the gender with which I identify (neither solely male or female) was offered to me, so I just left it blank, apparently that wasn’t the thing to do.

I then received this lovely message on my News Feed telling me that I may be confusing people:

"No gender on Lauren's Facebook?! I'm so confused about life!"

Now, this to me is funny. Being someone of the genderqueer variety actually does confuse people, at least that is the look they give me when I notify them of the fact. So not only is this notice ignorant, it could also be seen as offensive. Thankfully for Facebook, I run a little blog that I’m sure no administrators read – though that last post about Tila coming out on Twitter was pretty darn good – so I don’t think they’ll be offended by the confusing sarcastic person any time soon.

The Internet thinks of me in a very odd light, I think. Facebook is confused by me, and I am confused, in turn by YouTube and their video suggestions… why do they think I want a Snuggie so badly? Maybe the Snuggie comes in gender neutral, so I can confuse people! Now that, would be sweet.

Amazon has recently released a piece of software that allows users to read books made for the Kindle on their Windows-based PC. The Kindle, Amazon’s e-book reader, retails for $259 USD. And the Kindle DX, which features a larger screen, retails for a whopping $489 USD. This new piece of software allows you to read books made for the Kindle, without having to actually buy the device.

While I’ve had a fairly positive experience with the software, here’s a few things that I didn’t like about it and hope will be available at some point:

• Kindle for PC doesn’t currently support newspapers, magazines, and blogs, which are only available to people who own a Kindle or Kindle DX.

• No Mac or Linux support. While a Mac version will be available soon, no version for Linux is planned.

• The user interface needs a fair amount of work. Even though the software has a nice, clean UI, users should be able to choose their own color scheme. If this is eventually implemented, hopefully it will be done in a way where it doesn’t distract from the reading experience.

The software can sync with the Kindle/Kindle DX, so all of the books you have on there will be downloaded into Kindle for PC. In addition, when someone stops reading somewhere in an e-book on a Kindle or Kindle DX, they can pick up where they left off in Kindle for PC, as it automatically syncs the last page read.

The official download page for the software can be found here. The link also provides information on upcoming Kindle for PC features, like being able to create notes and annotations.

So all in all, Kindle for PC is a fair piece of software. Remember that Kindle for PC is only in beta at the moment, so it isn’t finished yet. If you have a feature request or have found a bug, there’s a feedback button in the main menu.

1. Command + Shift + 3
   Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop.
2. Command + Shift + 4
   Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop.
3. Command + Shift + 4 + Spacebar
   Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop.
4. Command + Control + Shift + 3
   Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it to the clipboard.
5. Command + Control + Shift + 4
   Take a screenshot of an area and save it to the clipboard.
6. Command + Control + Shift + 4 + Spacebar
   Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the clipboard.
7. Command + Shift + A (in Grab.app)
   Take a screenshot of an area and save it in a location of your choice.
