Friday, December 18, 2009
Opera Martini

Week started off well with a Manhasset, 6 parts rye whiskey, ½ part dry vermouth, ½ part sweet vermouth, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice with a twist. I like rye, so was looking forward to this, expecting it to be something like my favorite Manhattan. This was similar, but not exactly like a Manhattan due to the citrus of the lemon juice and twist. In addition to have a citrusy taste, it was not as sweet as a standard Manhattan, given the addition of the dry vermouth. But, all in all, this was drinkable and enjoyable.

Sunday’s drinks were polar opposites in terms of taste and “enjoyability”. The Jack London Martini consisted of 6 parts currant vodka, 2 parts Dubonnet blanc, 1 part maraschino liqueur and a lemon twist. This used up the last of my currant vodka, was not sorry to see the bottle go into the recycle bin. Every time I have currant vodka these last few weeks, the drink has tasted like a form of grape Koolaid. While that may be fine for 10 year olds and Jim Jones, it is not suitable in a cocktail. However, this drink did not taste like grape Koolaid. I had never had Dubonnet blanc, but I do remember the commercials during the holidays when I was a kid—have Dubonnet on the rocks. It sounded so elegant. It is a fortified sweet wine, very sweet. It was not a bad drink, but it was far from memorable.

The Nightmare (6 parts gin, 2 parts Madiera wine, 2 parts cherry brandy and an orange twist) was true to its name. No need to ponder where that name came from. It was bad. I cannot describe it any other way and I only had two sips of it and tossed the rest down the kitchen drain. I am not sure what it was that made this so awful, I guess it was the interplay between the Madeira (which I have had in the past and enjoyed) and the sickly artificial sweetness and color of the cherry brandy. Anyway, yuck. I cannot recommend this drink. My apologies if I have offended anyone.

Monday night brought cocktail relief in the form of the Nutty Martini: 6 parts vodka, 1 part Frangelico and a lemon twist. I like Frangelico, add some vodka, badda bing badda boom. It is sweet, so might work better as an after-dinner refreshment rather than an aperitif, but you would likely not be disappointed.

Tuesday’s drink seemed appropriate as it was called the Oakland Cocktail. I was born and raised in Oakland. It was comprised of 4 parts vodka, 2 parts dry vermouth and 2 parts fresh orange juice. It was the return of the Screwdriver, expect not as sweet. I was never one for Screwdrivers in college or when they were popular in the early 80’s, so I will toss this in the “not-to-make-again file”.

OK, am I going crazy or am I just an absolutely horrible speller who has gotten by relying on SpellCheck too much? I thought the Martini Book listed the drink recipes in alphabetical order. I looked up the next drink on my list, the Parisian Martini, which I would expect BEFORE the Parrothead Martini. “I” still comes before “R”, right? But the order in the book reads Palm Beach, Parrothead, Parisian, Park Avenue and then the Peach Blossom. Maybe I should have been an editor. Nah, I am not that detail oriented. I am starting to sound surly and churlish so I will just go back to the drinks. The Parisian was 6 parts gin, 2 parts dry vermouth and 1 part crème de cassis. I was expecting something like a kir royale. It was a passable drink, the sweetness of cassis balanced out the dry vermouth, although I did use only half the dry vermouth indicated. Given the choice, I would have a kir royale (champagne with a couple drops of crème de cassis) instead of this drink but it would do in a pinch.

I finally broke down and had New Orleans Martini on Thursday night. I was dreading this as it had Pernod. I have bad memories of Pernod from college days. BLECK. I agreed to take this drink in a moment of weakness when I felt guilty because Cathy had taken all the Pernod drinks and she obviously was not enjoying them. So I stepped up to the plate. This drink was 6 parts vanilla vodka, 1 part dry vermouth, 1 part Pernod, 1 dash Angostura bitters and a fresh mint sprig. The vanilla vodka overpowered the Pernod, so I hardly tasted the anise of the Pernod (which is always a good thing to my thinking). The mint spring kept is fresh, which was also a plus. All in all, this was not as bad as I thought, but it had enough of a licorice taste that I will not have this one again. But it was better than the Nightmare.

Friday night as the end of a very, very long week, and an even longer semester. The College is closed next Monday and Tuesday and the campus is closed from next Wednesday (12/23) to January 6, 2010, so I have 2.5 weeks off. Hooray! Granted, half of it is furlough time, but I can hopefully relax a bit. Tonight’s drink was the Opera Martini, 6 parts gin, 2 parts Dubonnet Blanc, 1 part maraschino liqueur and a lemon twist. I do not know if there was more alcohol in this than normal, if I didn’t have enough to eat, or if I was just so exhausted from the last couple of months or what. But I do know that I felt this drink, it put me on my ear ass. My husband called this a “cheap date drink” because it put me under the table. (Cathy’s comment: Probably the wrong place for a good cheap date to end up, I’d think the bed would be more comfortable!)

That’s all for now, thanks for stopping by,
Sue

A Black & Decker cordless drill is one of the most popular exercises in the market today. Now on

A Black & Decker cordless drill is one of the most popular exercises in the market today. Now on the age-old question: Is it really the best?

Just because it is one of the most bought, does not mean it has a good quality. Often marks easily develop a reputation in its name alone, and get bought because her "the only one that heard the consumers.

A Black and Decker drill is used by many Web sites that are sold today, such a result is not a challenge. However, choosing the rightit is somewhat difficult because they have a number of different models. Here is a quick review of two of the fastest-selling models.

CDC120ASB

This is one of the most popular drills, and has a twelve-volt version, the twenty different accessories come with it.

This is extremely stable and easy to use, and is a cordless model, which makes it very convenient. It is in its "build small and actually seventy percent tinier than the previous versions, so you canThey squeeze in a much tighter space.

As I said before, this Black & Decker cordless screwdriver uses a twelve-volt battery and comes with a speed that is up to six hundred and fifty revolutions per minute, which is safe enough for the purposes of most people.

Since it uses a feed, without a key, it makes little change in the extremely simple, and it is also easy to remove the battery. It also works with many different tasks to be done for around the house.

As to usehandle of the drill, you should recharge the battery, it is impossible to use the other battery is recharging during the first one. Basically you have to stop working while waiting to load the battery.

Besides this point, however, all in all it is a very solid device and one would stand behind me.

71-622 122 Piece Drill & Drive Bit Set

The Black & Decker Cordless Drill Driver comes with both flat and Philips head bits that allow you to almost any place you needregardless of the difficulty.

The best thing about this drill is that it is not expensive, selling for only thirty-seven dollars. She usually gets very high marks from customers. However, it is not around to the more durable drill bit.

In other words, it is not as long as you want if you use them every day for your work recently, but if it lasts only about using the plan occasionally around the house for a while. If you are a weekend warrior, this Black & Decker Cordless Drillsenough.

Imperial Martini

Jamie’s Martini

December 5, 2009
Hasty Martini

Still trying to catch up on the backlog here. Good grief. I need to get through writing about these before I inadvertently end up drinking some of them twice! (Usually not necessarily a bad thing, but …).

As you might have guessed by the title, I was less than enamored with all three of these. The Imperial was 6 parts gin, 2 parts dry vermouth (FAIL right there, too much vermouth), 1/2 tsp maraschino liqueur, and 3 to 5 dashes of Angostura bitters. I did cut back the vermouth by about 20% or so when I measured it, and I only used the minimum dashery (my new word du jour) of bitters. Still not a big draw for me. It wasn’t a bad drink, it just also wasn’t a very good drink. I’ll give this one the “Blech” rating of 3.25 stars. Lower the vermouth and maybe just one dash of bitters, it would be decent, I think.

Jamie’s Martini was basically yet another Screwdriver by another name. And you know how I get about those. So this rates an “Ehhh”. 6 parts vodka, 1 part triple sec, 2 parts fresh orange juice, 1/4 teaspoon bar sugar. I mean, as far as Screwdrivers go, this wasn’t a bad one, so I’ll give it a 3.75 rating. I admit that I do tend to use the cheaper vodka when I’m mixing a lot of stuff into it like orange juice and such that is really going to mask any taste and quality differences – I don’t know if that would have helped this drink any. I used the Kirkland vodka from Costco. Which still isn’t exactly rotgut vodka, it’s actually pretty good. But Ketel One it isn’t. And my biggest beef with it is that the bottle it comes in is HUGE – I think the size is 1.75 liters, which isn’t a bad thing, especially since my boyfriend bought it for me while we were at Costco and I didn’t have to pay for it! But the bottle is literally so tall that it doesn’t fit in the freezer. And I don’t have room in there to lay it on its side, so it is the only vodka bottle I have (and I think there are 12 total) that sits on the counter. Even sitting on the counter is a problem because again, it is so tall – any cupboard door that I open bangs into it unless I leave it sitting on my kitchen island, where there are no overhanging cupboards. Perhaps I should make a centerpiece out of it? I could get one of those holly and berry candle rings and pop that around the base, after all, it ’tis the season. Or I could just motivate myself to drink it faster. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Last up is the Hasty Martini, 6 parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth, 3 to 5 dashes of Pernod, and 1 teaspoon grenadine. That damn Pernod again. I only used 3 dashes – I would have cut back more, but I wanted to do justice to the recipe. But you have probably figured out from reading my posts by now that Pernod is NOT one of my favorite additions. To anything. Well, maybe the toilet. And yes, this is the “Icky” rating, I’ll give this one 2.5 stars. I’d rate it lower but I’m sure there is something worse out there, probably one of the ones Sue and I have decided to skip for this blog (that will be a separate post, coming up soon).

Harry! Don't Make Me Drink the Pernod!

There is actually a drink coming up, Sue may have already blogged about it, called the New Orleans martini, that when I saw the recipe for that one included 1 PART Pernod (as opposed to a few DASHES), I knew that either Sue had to take that one or we had to leave it off the list altogether. The prospect of adding that much Pernod to a martini and then drinking it made me feel like Dumbledore must have felt in the cave of the Inferi, having to swill all that nasty potion to get to (what proved to be fake) the Horcrux. Given that I don’t have Harry here to persuade me to consume it, nor do I even have Daniel Radcliffe here to offer to serve it up to me (well, wait, let me rethink this … I suppose I could find SOME way to suddenly pretend I like Pernod, and … isn’t he old enough for a 46-year-old woman by now that I wouldn’t get charged with anything like statuatory rape? Hmmm. Okay, you’re right. I’m old enough to be not only his mother but probably his grandmother if I were really pushing the reproductive barriers. Thanks for rubbing that in.

Cheers,
Cathy

It’s been a long while since I’ve done one of these, but it’s always fun to make a list of all the things I’m learning in my day-to-day life, no textbook required (although sometimes it would be desireable)!

1. Owen is not a screwdriver. He told me so.

2. If you pretend to be Buzz Lightyear, wear a cardboard box for a helmet, and jump off the couch yelling, “to infinity and beyond!”, you will hit your head on the ceiling and possibly take out a light fixture…or two…

3. Dorky family pictures don’t work out so well when you’re the only one who looks dorky in them.

4. You have to wait a really, really long time to get season 8 of the original “Beverly Hills 90210″ from Netflix!

5. The “Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” song is much, much funnier when sung through a paper towel tube.

6. When it’s 9 degrees outside in the middle of the night and your dogs start barking like crazy, take a little time to fully rouse yourself from your slumber. Don’t muddleheadedly run outside in shorts and a tank top! It’s a very rude awakening. Literally.

7. OMG! I am, like, totally the coolest adult my little sister-in-law knows.

8. My little sister-in-law needs to get out more. A LOT more!

9. I don’t like being referred to as an “adult”, even if it’s preceded by the world cool. Come on, everybody knows there’s no such thing as a cool adult!

10. As much as I dislike being called an adult, I dislike it even more when I tell someone that I’ve been married for almost 6 years, and they ask if I’m 19 or 20. I have a feeling that Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler could do a pretty good “REALLY!?” segment about this. (For the Rednecks reading this, that would be “Saturday Night Live’s” version of “Here’s Your Sign”). And by the way, my husband is not that much of a pervert!

December 4, 2009 & November Something-Or-Other, 2009 Frosty Mango Martini In case you were wonde

December 4, 2009 & November Something-Or-Other, 2009
Frosty Mango Martini

In case you were wondering (which I doubt), my bad puns don’t always just roll readily off the tongue. The term “screwdriver” this past week seems to be getting a lot of play in various forms in jokes involving Tiger Woods’ infidelity and types of golf clubs. Ohhh you betcha, I could go there too, but we’ll just stick to Shakespeare for now.

I actually had the Frosty Mango a week or so ago, and naturally didn’t get around to blogging about it, and thus completely forgot my full impression of the drink, and in the interim managed to lose the recipe for it as well. The recipe for this drink is not in my older version of The Martini Book but is in Sue’s newer one, so I had to ask her for the directions when we were divvying up drinks, which she provided. I wrote them down, carried it around on a random piece of paper for awhile, and after making and consuming the drink, promptly lost it again. Sigh. So not only were my recollections of the drink itself fuzzy, I didn’t even have the recipe to share with you.

Thank goodness for the “Archive” feature of Yahoo Instant Messenger, at least on my home computer. Tonight I was able to go on there, scroll through a few days’ worth of IM’s from Sue, and voila! The ingredients for the Frosty Mango. Given that my can of Kern’s Mango Nectar will spoil within another week, I figured, well, heck, might as well make another one to refresh my memory, right? Riiiggggghhht. There’s a good excuse, Cathy.

The ingredients – two ounces mango nectar, two ounces vodka, one ounce triple sec, 1/4 ounce Rose’s lime juice. First time I made this, I mixed it up to the exact proportions. Second time around, I modified it a bit – I put in about 2-1/4 ounces of nectar, 3/4 ounce triple sec, and a bit less lime juice. By jove, I think we’ve got something here. I could probably add a little more vodka next time around, it actually isn’t a very strong drink as it currently stands (well, at least by my cast-iron-liver standards).

Now you’ve probably figured out by now that I’m not really crazy about screwdrivers. The drink, that is. I find the tool very useful. But as for the cocktail, I’m just not a big orange juice fan, it’s too acid for me. Mango nectar is a lot like pineapple orange juice in that regard – sweeter and less acidic. Which makes this martini just about perfect. Now I’m not going to give it 5 stars only because I’m not a big fan of fruity drinks, and I’m still a martini purist. Churchill would be rolling over in his grave at the notion of all that stuff interfering with the vodka, I’m sure. Although there isn’t any vermouth in this drink, so he’d probably be okay with that. Also, I tend to think of a martini as being primarily alcohol (probably the reason I like them) vs. mixers. With non-alcoholic nectar and lime juice, and 40 proof triple sec (although triple sec does also come in a non-alcoholic variety, I honestly didn’t know that until I researched this), this is pretty subdued in terms of alcohol content. So I’ll give it a 4.25 star rating – it is a good cocktail. I suspect it would be tastier when mango is in season and you can actually add the fresh mango slice for the garnish as well. Add some of that mango and sticky coconut rice dessert from a Thai restaurant? YUM. Two thumbs up.

Cheers,
Cathy

Sunday, November 15, 2009
Dirty Martini

Title caught your attention, didn’t it? Too bad the Daydream Martini did not capture mine. This was made with citrus vodka, triple sec and orange juice and bar sugar. Frankly, it tasted like a sweet screwdriver, owing to the triple sec and the extra sugar. I drank it and I think that is pretty much all that I can say about that one. In a previous post, Cathy expressed her views on the infamous screwdriver, and that very much echoes my thoughts so I will move on.

I spent a good part of Sunday at our church, corralling 13-14 years olds in an outreach activity for their youth group, a senior Thanksgiving lunch. My daughter, however, was absent as she was at a high school open house with her father. Somehow I ended up on the Youth Group Advisory Board. This used to happen to me a lot, I “volunteered” for things, like chairing the entire school auction. I used to do this because I was desperate to keep my son at the school and I thought that if I involved myself in these things, they couldn’t possibly kick him out, right? Well, they still complained about him; he is a great kid, but Catholic schools are simply not set up for exuberant children who think outside of the box, or who happen to have ADHD and are dyslexic. Go figure, charity does not necessarily begin at school. After many tears, much research and a bunch of good luck, we found the right school for my son and he is successful and happy.

And I am still “volunteering” for things. Heavy sigh. I actually don’t mind the Youth Group, I do it for my daughter certainly, but also because of the woman who runs it. She does so much for the church and the school, she deserves help—or whatever meager assistance I can lend. Needless to say, after this event, I was looking forward to my cocktail(s). The Daydream failed to impress, but I liked the gin dirty martini. Normally I am not a huge fan of dirty martinis, but this one passed muster. Maybe it was the Bombay Sapphire. Hiccup.

It will be a busy week, thanks for sharing part of yours with us and thanks stopping by,

Sue

I’ve been doing this cleanse with my sister for about 2 weeks (it’s called the Wild Rose Cleanse) and it ended today so I had a screwdriver…or two
It’s actually really fun to IM people when you’re tipsy…I guess it’s because you lose your inhibitions and talk about things you normally wouldn’t. So…..I talked to a few friends I haven’t spoken to in a while (and found out one of them has started smoking weed–) and also went on ICQ. I haven’t been on there in months. Whenever I go on, it definitely makes me feel better about myself because of the things guys say =)
I’m so tired right now. I think I might be hungover tomorrow–or maybe I am right now. I still feel a bit loopy but I have a KILLER headache. I think I’ll try to sleep. Peace and Love ^^.

Hard Candy: a character-driven modern thriller that feels like the most extreme episode of ‘To

Hard Candy: a character-driven modern thriller that feels like the most extreme episode of ‘To Catch A Predator’. Right from the opening IM conversation you know this film will be difficult to watch, and the first 20 minutes are among the most awkward I’ve seen. Because there’s only two characters the story’s very neat and wrapped up tightly: Ellen Page is nothing short of phenomenal and Patrick Wilson was great. David Slade made a good job of making the film feeling cold, minimal and clinical, although colour is used very effectively, and his direction throughout is spot on. Guys will always remember what happens off-screen and there’s a few more scenes that stuck with me since I originally saw it in the cinema. By the end, it begins to feel a little stretched out, and it does make you question how a kid could execute this plan so perfectly. Fantastic feature-length debut, but hard-hitting content will be too uncomfortable for some.

Score: 8/10
