A few weeks in Qatar already and I’ve already got accustomed to seeing the beautiful Arabic script around Doha. Being the country’s operational language to all intents and purposes, English is found everywhere. This is clearly convenient for a non Arabic speaker in terms of getting things done, but will remove the challenge in the long term in the sense that it seems unlikely I’ll ever be in a situation where being able to read Arabic is essential. Having said that, if I can maintain the curiosity to want to understand written Arabic, having ubiquitous translations readily available could be a tremendous asset.

I’ve started trying to write the script before learning to recognise it. The logic behind this is that from experience I tend to find it easier to learn (recognise) unfamiliar characters by going through the process of having to write them myself. This was an essential part of learning many hundreds of complex Japanese kanji.

Here’s an early attempt.

I’ve tried only the first 13 ‘letters’. They bear some resemblance to the Japanese hiragana alphabet. I’m aware that these letters are stand-alone form. That is, if they were written together with other letters their form would change. Character formation is difficult because I have no sense of proportion, simply copying them out from a nice sample I found on the Internet. I’m trying to pronounce the phonetic transcription of each letter as I write it but I’m aware that it’s probably way off the mark so this week I’m going to get a colleague to correct my pronunciation of each one. This will be extremely important to get right because having to unlearn bad pronunciation later will be wasteful. Also, as I’m in the process of ‘creating meaning’ in relation to these new letters, it pays to get it right from the start.

So far, I’ve not learnt or picked up any Arabic words at all from day to day activities. It’s going to be down to me to seek out the exposure.

Last post for today, containing the rest of my efforts over the last week or so…

Drawing for some script to go on a customer’s chest, a compass for another guy’s shin, and a photo of this week’s nails…I had a sick day this week so I did a couple of drawings, but I wasn’t feeling very inspired so didn’t get much else done, hence the nail photo ;)

Here is the script tattooed, was his first tattoo:

And the compass – dodgy photo cause it’s on a shin, and there’s also a couple of drawings in there for a customer next week!

So now I’m going to be lazy and put a few things into one post, I’m still pretty new to this blogging thing and I don’t know whether it’s better to do a new post for each topic or not, but oh well!

Here is some script from last week:

And a line drawing for some colour poppies and butterflies to go on a customer’s thigh:

I also got tattooed at the end of last week, by the amazing Schwarz, a portrait of my dog, Vernon <3 It was a long sitting but worth it! :)

Another drawing for a customer, a russian doll with lavender, looking forward to tattooing this!:

I also finished the skull, snake and gypsy lady I started a few months back. Just the underneath to do now!

And finally, one of my lovely customers, Natalie, made me a present! She painted it on canvas and brought it into the shop for me the other day, I love it!! Her grandad was William Hewison, art editor and illustrator for Punch magazine, and I believe she said this is one of his designs reworked :)

[The lights in the room start to flicker as they were turned on, and the interviewer adjusts her eyes into the light and looks at the sight that is in front of her]

Me: Hello there, Mr. Satan. We meet again.

Satan: Why yes, hell-o there. You’re the girl who once thought I was ‘the boogeyman’, am I right?

Me: *cringes* Why, yes. I am that girl. But now, Mr. Satan sir, mind if I ask you a few questions?

Satan: I do mind, actually. I can’t believe I’m having an interview with a peasant. But, since I have nothing better to do anyway, go ahead. And call me Lucifer.

Me: …Okay then.

Me: So, Lucifer… Why is it that you punish those who go to hell when in fact you’re the one who tempts them to do bad in the first place? Wouldn’t it be a common misconception on our part, like, maybe you actually welcome those who go hell with open arms and a celebration party?

Satan: [laughs] Oh, I like your questions. It’s not me who actually tempts your species to cause chaos and destruction in your world. It’s your own consciousness that causes you to think of such things, and that blasted god and I are just there, watching you and every step of your way. It’s funny how people always put the blame on me like ‘Oh, he gave in to the temptation of the devil’ when in fact it was the person’s own sub consciousness who forced him to do it and not me.

[Satan straightens himself up a bit]

Satan: As for punishing people in hell, you probably already know that I was thrown out of the ‘place up there’ because I wanted to be just like God. Now, being the leader in hell I get to be that guy, but actually I find it more entertaining to see them suffer and beg for my mercy more than celebrating the way they follow my footsteps. But we do have a few parties once in a while, to remind us that we’re not alone in being abandoned and punished by a God we once believed in to be so great.

Me: Interesting…

Satan: Obviously.

Me: So, you aren’t actually evil?

Satan: [glares] I AM evil, you peasant. I’m your greatest nightmare, the source of fear and insecurities that lie in your little head. You may have come up with it, but I’m the one who revels in it… making your fear grow bigger and bigger until your puny little heart can’t take it. You may worship me, but I don’t worship anyone but myself.

Satan: And you… you have the ability to become someone like me if you choose to do so. You have the ability to make the world crumble using your own bare hands. [Smirks]

[Satan transforms into the interviewer’s greatest nightmare, she panics and throws a book at Satan... breaking the magical mirror that she had been staring at the whole time.]

The school bell rings shrilly indicating the start of morning classes. At the sound of it, all students from 9th grade to 12th grade becomes frantic. Hastily, they go to their respective first period classes.

Six students head to Ms. Chang’s AP Calculus class. When the students enter her classroom, MS. ALEXA CHANG is already seated at her desk checking papers. DAPHNE ELDRIDGE and HILLARY MILTON are the first to go inside the room. They are chattering excitedly about Miley Cyrus.

DAPHNE

You should have seen it, Hillary. Miley’s concert

in Albany last Saturday was a sure jam-packed!

HILLARY

(widens her eyes in amazement)

Really? Whoa! She’s definitely an epic!

Say the Jonas Bros were there too?

DAPHNE

Uh-huh. (thinking)

And yes, I remember Selena was there, too.

But she didn’t perform ──

(stops at Ms. Chang’s desk)

Good morning, Ms. Chang.

MS. CHANG

(looks up then smiles)

Good morning, Ms. Eldridge. And to you as well, Ms. Milton

HILLARY

(tugs Daphne’s arm impatiently)

Daphne, tell me more.

I’m dying to know what happened.

For more students go inside the room.. Each of them greets Ms. Chang before taking a seat. When all are seated, Ms. Chang rises from her seat. That’s when everybody turns silent.

MS. CHANG

So class, as you can see I’m still checking your quiz yesterday.

I hope you won’t mind giving me a couple of minutes to finish

them so that I can return your papers back to you.

DEXTER

It’s alright with us, Ms. Chang.

DAPHNE

Yes, Ms. Chang. It’s okay with us.

Just take your time.

MS. CHANG

Very well

(gets a chalk and writes two derivative problems

on the chalk board)

Okay. While I’m checking your papers, I want

you to get the derivatives of these two equations I

wrote on the board. In addition to that, you answer Exercise 1

on page 258 of your calculus books. Write all your answers in

a clean sheet of paper. Show your solution, minimize erasures.

Did I make myself clear?

STUDENTS

Yes, Ms. Chang.

Ms. Chang nods her head then she takes a seat and continues checking the test papers.

TRACIE

(talks to Phenna)

I wonder who from among us here will turn out to be

the highest in yesterday’s test.

DAPHNE

(hears what Tracie said)

Puhleeez! Oh, come on, Tracie. You don’t have

to wonder about that. Are you blind or something?

I think it’s rather plain and obvious.

(shoots a glance at Francis)

PHENNA

(writing on her notebook)

Yeah, I think so too.

Phenna looks up to find Daphne looking at her sternly; one eyebrow raised. She returned the look with a bewildered reaction.

PHENNA

What?

DAPHNE

Nothing. (turns back to Tracie)

Anyway, Tracie, I’m sure it would be Francis again.

TRACIE

Really, am I talking to you, Daphne?

Wait. Don’t answer; just save your breath.

Tell you what, Daphne? That’s one of the things I

hate about you. You’re always assuming things!

DAPHNE

Just face it. I’m always right, ain’t I?

If I bet you, I’m damned sure I’ll win. By the way,

better take my suggestion, honey. Just shut up,

will you? (glares at Tracie then turns to Hillary)

Dammit! Tracie Sullivan really has this talent

of destroying my day!

HILLARY

Just chill, Daph. Okay? To brighten up your day

again, why don’t you just look at your Francis?

I know it works. (gives Daphne a wink)

Upon hearing his name, Francis looks up. Daphne meets his eye and smiles flirtatiously. However, Francis ignores her as he turns his attention back to his book.

DAPHNE

(looks at Francis whimsically)

Don’t you think Francis is cute?

HILLARY

Duh! Give me a break, Daph. As far as I can

remember, you’ve asked me that for

thousands of times already. And I’m sure my

answer has always been “yes”.

DAPHNE

I know. I just can’t help gushing on how cute

he is over and over again.

HILLARY

By the way, you got already got a date

for the dance this Friday night.

DAPHNE

Not yet. Jim asked me yesterday but I turned him down.

DEXTER

What?!? Daph, are you nuts?

You said no to the JIM HARREN! Probably

the most popular boy in school… I would have

instantly say “yes” the instant he asks me to.

Dexter’s eyes suddenly become dreamy as if he is imagining Jim Harren swooning him across the dance floor.

HILLARY

Snap out of your illusion, Dex! You know that’ll

never ever happen!

DEXTER

(crosses his arms just as he rolls his eyes annoyingly)

Whatever. Still, Daphne shouldn’t have done that.

You didn’t realize how big your loss is, Girl.

(turns to Daphne)

DAPHNE

So what? I know pretty soon I’ll get a date who

is much more better than Jim.

HILLARY

Oh, Dexter, please. Daphne isn’t the kind of girl

who’d go for athletes and bulky guys. She much

prefer the “wizard” type.

DEXTER

(widens his eyes in understanding)

Oh my —– Francis???

HILLARY

And no one else.

TRACIE

(mumbles)

Oh, Daphne. You’re very much hopeless.

DAPHNE

(turns at Tracie rather pissed)

You saying something?

TRACIE

Forget it.

Miss Chang raps suddenly at her desk to get everyone’s attention.

MS CHANG

Okay. I’m finished checking your test papers and I’m very pleased to

announce that one of you got an impressive score of 100.

Can you guess who it is?

DEXTER

Francis Yñaros

MS CHANG

You guessed it right, Mr. Ames.

PHENNA
There’s no need to guess, Ms. Chang. I mean, it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it. Francis

is a brain of a math wizard. So for sure, he’ll ace any Math test.

MS CHANG

(nods her head)

I see. Well, alright. Once I call your name, you get your

paper in here. Mr. Yñaros, Ms. Sullivan, Ms. Eldridge,

Ms. Milton, Mr. Ames and Ms. Aragorn. Class, continue answering

quietly on your seats while Ms. Aragon and I has some matters to discuss.

Phenna is taken aback upon hearing her name. She stared agape at her Calculus teacher.

MS CHANG

Come over here, Ms. Aragon. There’s something that we need to discuss.

Phenna silently goes to Ms. Chang and stands before her. Ms. Chang takes off her spectacles.

MS CHANG

Phenna, your Math scores are alarming. Look, every time

we have a test, you always fail to get a better mark.

I must tell you this: your math grade at the moment

already puts you in the lowest quartile rank of the whole

11th grade population of Mercersburg If this trend continues,

I have no choice but to give you a grade of F for this semester.

PHENNA

Yes, Ms. Chang. I understand.

MS CHANG

Is something bothering you, Phenna? You see, I’d talk

with your other teachers and they told me you’re doing

great with your other subjects —- except in Calculus unfortunately.

Tell me, Phenna, what makes Mathematics very hard for you?

PHENNA

It’s not really Math, Ms. Chang. Just…. Just Calculus.

I dunno. But it seems that, it’s always like that..

I mean, maybe I was born such a loser in Math. These derivatives

here and stuff? They just don’t make any sense

to me at all. And it’s frustrating

MS. CHANG

Then, you must try —-

PHENNA
Ms Chang, I tried. But somehow, I always seem to fail.

Perhaps, the old myth is true after all. You see, Ms. Chang

I’m rather good with words. That only means that when

it comes to numbers, I’m literally hopeless.

MS CHANG
The old myth? Listen Phenna. You might not be trying hard

enough. If the other students can comprehend what

these derivatives are, then why on earth can’t you? Don’t

believe that old myt that when you’re good with Math, you’ll do

poorly in words or the other way around.. It’s just a matter of

mastery, Phenna. You have to work harder. And most of all,

you’ve got to do something with your grade.

PHENNA

Yes, Ms Chang.

MS. CHANG

You must join the reinforcement sessions in Calculus every

Saturday morning. And I suggest, you sign up at the Tutoring

club and ask if there are available peer tutors who are willing

to help you in Calculus.

PHENNA

Yes, Ms. Chang. Thank you.

MS CHANG

Good. Very well, it’s settled then. I really hope you’ll improve, Phenna.

It’s not yet too late. You may now return to your seat.

Phenna silently returns to her seat. She looks like somebody who underwent a terrible ordeal. As she flips the pages of her book, she exasperatedly blows the strands of hair from her eyes.

FRANCIS
Bad mood?

PHENNA

Like hell.

FRANCIS

Is it because of the score you got from the test yesterday?

PHENNA

Well, what does it matter? After all,

I’m doomed. A complete epic fail.

FRANCIS

You’ll be if you think that way.

(stares at her silently)

Can I see your paper?

PHENNA

No way!

Phenna tries to draw her paper away but Francis has been fast enough to grab it from her.Francis scans her paper disapprovingly.

FRANCIS

10 out of 50. Pretty bad score.

PHENNA

What do you think? Go on. Laugh all you want now.

I couldn’t care less.

FRANCIS

This ain’t a joke Phenna. Getting only 20% correct out

of all the items in here should be enough to give

you the creeps. This stuff is easy, I tell you.

PHENNA

Okay. Well, thanks for your concern, Francis. Really.

But with all due respect, you and I are absolutely different

individuals. Math might be so easy for you. But for me, it’s not

and God knows when it’ll be a piece of cake. You are “wizard”

as they say because you can do magic with numbers. But me —

Look at me. I’m another story. I swear, I can’t find logic to

these numbers here (points to the opened book on her desk).

(shakes her head)

It just don’t make any sense.

FRANCIS

(sighs)

Okay, point taken. But you can’t really be that

dumb, can you? What do you say, we meet at the main building

right after classes this afternoon. I’m willing to tutor you

until you understand these stuffs.

PHENNA

You’ve got to be kidding.

FRANCIS

Do I look like I am?

Phenna searches his face for any sign of mischievousness. Finding none, she sighs, then looks away.

PHENNA

No. Thank you but I’ll be signing up for the Tutoring club.

To Phenna’s surprise, Francis actually smiles but immediately suppresses it when he sees Phenna’s reaction..

FRANCIS

It’s just the same. I happened to be a tutor in

that club, just so you know.

PHENNA

You are?

FRANCIS

I am. So, most likely you’ll still end up being my

tutee since I’m the only one in the club who is available

at the moment to tutor students who are

having problems in Math.

PHENNA
It’s absurd. Surely, there must be more important stuff you —-

FRANCIS

It’s alright. Don’t mention it. Besides, I like helping people.

Really. So we’ll have tutorial sessions right after

classes starting today. That’s final..

PHENNA

Alright. If you say so. Thanks anyway.

Daphne notices the conversation taking place between Francis and Phenna. Jealousy gets the better of her so she decides to steal the spotlight.

DAPHNE
(smiling flirtatiously)

Hey, Francis! You already asked someone

to the dance this Friday night?

Francis is oblivious that Daphne was asking him since he still haven’t taken his gaze away from Phenna. Daphne waves her hand in front of him to snap him back to attention.

DAPHNE

Francis! I was asking you something!

FRANCIS

Huh? You were? Sorry, I didn’t catch it. What was

that you were saying again?

DAPHNE

You already got a date for the dance?

FRANCIS

Uh-huh. Yup. I already have? Why?

DAPHNE

(looks like she just drank something bitter)

Never mind.

TRACIE

(with a mocking expression on her face)

Aaaaaahh… poor Daphne. You shouldn’t

have rejected Jim Harren.

DAPHNE

Will you just shut up, Tracie?

DEXTER

Now, who’s raising her hopes up too high?

The shrill sound of the bell rings again indicating the end of the first period classes.

MS CHANG

All right, class. I understand you are not finish with your work

yet. Therefore, that will just be your homework.

Submit them to me tomorrow. Bye, everyone.

The students start to file out of the door. Daphne approaches Francis again just as he gathers his things inside his bag.

DAPHNE

Uh, Francis, I’m having a pizza party at my place this 5pm.

You know where I live right. I’m kind of

wondering if you’ll be able to go.

FRANCIS

Thanks for the invitation, Daph. But I’m

sorry I can’t go. I have a date later..

DAPHNE

I see…

(forces herself to smile)

Enjoy the rest of the day, then. Let’s go, Hillary.

Daphne leaves the classroom dragging Hillary along with her.

PHENNA

What? You got a date this afternoon?

FRANCIS

Yeah. So?

PHENNA

So you can’t possibly tutor me —-

FRANCIS

A date is some kind of an appointment. And

my appointment is with you, remember?

PHENNA

Oh…I got it. Can’t you just say that in simpler terms?

FRANCIS

That’s simple. By the way, since it seems that everybody

has been talking about this dance on Friday.

we might as well talk about it. Somebody already asked you?

PHENNA

(laughs then shakes her head)

I don’t even think of going. It’s not compulsory anyway, isn’t it?

FRANCIS

Why not?

PHENNA

Firstly time does fly, seriously it does, it’s been over a year since I started doing this sty

Firstly time does fly, seriously it does, it’s been over a year since I started doing this style of battlers and I’m well, actually pretty pleased about it.
Okay reason for this post? Two things, firstly I’m actually making a start on Hulen, one of the early drafts of a battler is actually coming together now. I’ve not been able to make much progress so far because I’ve focused on getting a nice idle pose together.

This has been one of the hardest parts I’ve ever had to animate, a scarf… yep it’s not fully shaded or anything but I thought I’d share it since I couldn’t find a reference at all! So for those wanting to try to do these things yourself here’s a reference gif I hope you’ll find useful to get similar effects:

A little tip would be to not worry too much about the details until you’re happy with the overall look of the frames themselves. Also you’ll notice another reason why I’ve done this first (on a separate layer), he’s not moving. Yep this was hard enough to do BUT imagine doing this whilst he’s bouncing around the frame.

You can see there’s been some alterations to his design from the one previously shown and I’ve also got some nice plans to make this the most versatile animated battler yet! I may be crying in a few weeks because of me saying that but never hurts to try, nine times out of ten.

Number two, a brand new XP script for animated battlers has emerged! That’s right, and you know what? It looks fantastic, Moonpearl has done a brilliant job with this and I hope all you XP users out there give it a good old bug bashing. There’s some features in there which I didn’t think could be done in RGSS, but you can check out Moonpearl’s Animated Battlers right there and see for yourself.

With the DVD, Blu-Ray, and Trilogy Box sets being released December 4, 2012 for the Holidays, it was about time we got something a little new to feed our hunger for probably the greatest film of the year. Thanks to Trailer Park, we get three of the unused posters that were to promote ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. For whatever reason, they were not used.

Click For Full Size

The first two are awesome. They’re definitely better than some of the crappy posters or the UK DVD Cover that was released. The last one, I think I’ve seen it before. Or at least the little Bane drawing.

Own ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on Blu-Ray or DVD OR the Trilogy Box Set on December 4, 2012.

Where I wouldn’t normally do this I couldn’t help but share this with everyone here, I do get a lot of questions about the scripts involved with my battlers and I’m no scripter. Thanks to Passive Lion you can now not only set up my battlers but also learn how to create the skills with their series of YouTube videos.

Don’t forget to subscribe, like and check out the other parts to this brilliant and informative tutorial. Keep an eye out at http://www.passivelion.wix.com/community

I’ll be including the reference links into my VE – Animated battlers section soon. I’ll be honest I’ve never had the time to get to know Victors Animated Battle configuration and have only ever previously used Minkoff Animated Battle, so it was as daunting for me as I’ve seen from others.

There was a loud knock on Anne’s bedroom door. She wanted to open the door and at the same time, wanted to leave Jeremy knocking. She approached her drawer full of blades and started cutting. But Jeremy suddenly went through the window and broke the glass.

Jeremy: What are you doing Anne?!

Jeremy gets the blade from Anne’s bloody hand. Her arm was full of cuts and bruises.

Anne: Stay away from me Jeremy, let me go.
Jeremy: Why are you doing this? Are you insane?!
Anne: JUST STAY AWAY! I DON’T NEED YOU HERE. GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY ROOM, NOW!
Jeremy: What? No.

Jeremy grabbed Anne’s arm and hugged her tightly. Anne was resisting but she eventually stopped and she calmed down under Jeremy’s arms. She was pacified and she stopped shouting and crying.

Jeremy: What’s wrong Anne?
Anne: My life is shit. I don’t want to live anymore. No more. I give up. It’s not my day, my week, my month, my year, my life.
Jeremy: What happened?
Anne: My mom and dad. I caught them, they were high and they’re smoking weed. Not just that, they’re always making my life horrible. They beat me or punch me. It seems like I’m the shit daughter who looks like a punching bag, right Jeremy?
Jeremy: You’re perfect to me Anne. Why do you think they’re doing that?
Anne: I think they wanted me to be dead.
Jeremy: I don’t think so, they’re just not on their minds. You have to report this to the police so they won’t hurt you again.
Anne: I don’t know Jeremy. I love them but I critically hate them right now and no one is here for me.
Jeremy: You still have me, your best friend.

Anne just wept softly and leaned on Jeremy’s shoulder. Even though she knew she’s not alone on her struggle, the desire of killing herself was stronger. She was hungry for death. She reached for the knife under her pillow. She pointed the sharp blade on her heart.

Jeremy: No Anne! Please don’t kill yourself tonight.
Anne: I’m lonely and sad. Broken and can never be fixed. Just say bye.
Jeremy: But you have me and I want you to live.
Anne: you do? I wish I could disappear. You’re my best friend; you know what’s best for me. I’m constantly feeling pain and I wish to end it.
Jeremy: I’m glad you exist. Please stay.
Anne: I’m only a burden, Jeremy.
Jeremy: You are wonderful.
Anne: I could end it right now and die right in front of your eyes.
