Just me and the sky and a prim When I first came to Second Life, three years ago last Sunday, I was

Just me and the sky and a prim

When I first came to Second Life, three years ago last Sunday, I was mostly intrigued by the idea that you could make things there, in this “virtual world” where the laws of physics would be perhaps kinder, and more mutable, than in the real world.

Although we all know that the difficulty of The First Hour Experience is one of the Big Problems with the platform today, I wasn’t a victim of it: I was hooked after about ninety seconds. A whole, and apparently pretty large and complex and random, world to explore, without having to drive anywhere or get dressed or even get out of bed! And (see above) where anyone could just stick out a hand and build random things! Amazing!

For awhile I and/or it was crashing so much (you kids don’t know how easy you’ve got it these days!) that I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to stand it, but it and I got used to each other, and I stuck around.

It’s been a fascinating three years. As I say probably far too often, I came for the building and scripting and stuff, but stayed for the people. I still love the building and scripting, but I’m pretty sure that I spend less time on that than I do on talking to friends, dancing in clubs, meeting new people, and generally hanging out.

There is for obscure reasons a tradition in some subcultures of Second Life, that involves leaping naked from the sky, holding an umbrella, on one’s rezday.

How sure are we about this?

So there I am, again ‘way up in the virtual sky, on a slightly more sophisticated virtual sky platform (my floating rocks build, which is still up there over the Hughes Rise park), with my virtual umbrella, pondering the drop.

It really is a significant drop, isn't it?

This would be a good place for Deep and Significant Thoughts about Second Life, virtual worlds, the real world, the nature of consciousness, and so on. If any thoughts like that come to me while I’m typing here, I’ll try to pass them along.

Being Dale has, I’m about 100% certain, been a good thing for me. And continues to be. Different people have very different attitudes toward, relationships with, their virtual selves. For me it’s pretty simple: I am Dale Innis. Saying that I identify with my avatar is as much of an understatement (and an overstatement) as saying that I identify with my RL body. (Much more on that thought here.) My Second Life friends are friends of mine, just like my First Life friends are friends of mine. I don’t necessarily know where my SL friends live in RL, or what they do for a living, or whether they are married or have children; but since I can’t remember that sort of fact about my RL friends for more than five minutes either that’s not a very large consideration for me. The main difference, really, is that it’s so much easier to visit the SL ones.

Completely naked?

(Yes, completely naked; don’t complain to me, that’s the tradition.)

I continue to think, as I said all those years ago, that when we eventually look back on these very early days of virtual worlds, we will see it as the beginning of a huge and important change in the ways humans live their lives. Exactly what that change will be, I don’t pretend to know. I used fiction to speculate about it some back in Meaties; I like that story quite a bit (he said modestly), and it’s one possible answer to that question. It might even be something like the right one; time will tell.

It's pretty chilly up here.

Lots of people that I know in SL, and even more people that I know of, have been talking lately about the Good Old Days of Second Life, and how it’s going downhill, and the best parts are over, due to some combination of floods of newcomers and ‘bots, bad media reporting, stupid and/or malicious actions by Linden Lab, drama and trollishness, personal burnout, and whatever else.

I do sympathize with the feelings, and I am often puzzled by how completely clueless Linden Lab seems to be about communicating at least with the more engaged and articulate and clued segments of their customer base. I continue to attribute it to organizational randomness rather than to any self-destructive attempt to drive customers away, or even a desire to replace unruly individual customers with large wealthy better-behaved corporate ones (I think the Lindens would like to have both, and are just not all that good at communicating with the former).

And for myself, I’m still having a great time. I have my first real store-like things, I’ve been exploring lovely places and having adventures with friends, actually enjoying official organized events, and (of course, still, always) building random odd things (and things that build random odd things).

There have certainly been days and nights when I didn’t feel like going inworld; so I didn’t! But in general when the day is done and I have no more chores, and I can settle down into a comfy chair or bed with my laptop (yay, laptop!) on my lap, and fire up a viewer and find myself in my Park, or my Extropia pod, or wherever, and the IMs from friends, and the freebies from last night’s Midnight Mania boards, and the announcements of new Midnight Mania boards, and the scripting questions, and… all begin to flow in, and I open my inventory to decide what to wear and do some token inventory-sorting, it feels kind of like coming home.

Okay, deep breath...

Not that I’m knocking First Life; that’s pretty wonderful also. And when talking about Deep Things I think it’s a mistake for me to think of them as two different things. I have a life, and part of it is spent in Second Life, and part of it is spent in other places. And it’s all good. And, in the Spirit of the Season here in the US and A, I’m thankful for all of it.

One, two, three, WAHOOO!

In Second Life, I can be a boy, a girl, a panda, a child, a tiny elephant, or a bright shiny sphere. I can fly, I can walk under water, I can build a dirigible with my mind. I can meet people from countries I probably couldn’t find on the globe, and I can meet someone from down the street without knowing it. It has its share of people with issues, of griefers and trolls, of misunderstanding and even some cruelty, but well, that’s humanity for ya. I can build, create, explore, do art, try things out, experiment with my own shape and size and color and consciousness, and hang out and talk with other people who are doing the same kinds of things, and also very different ones.

That makes my life richer. Not my First Life, or my Second Life; just my life.

And not only mine.

Plummeting into the unknown future

So to my friends, my friends-to-be, my “would have been friends except we never actually both logged in at the same time”, and everyone else who’s made these last three years such a blast, and who will I’m sure do the same for the next three, five, seven, a million years, my warmest thanks, and if there’s anything I can do to help make your own journey more interesting and enjoyable, just drop me a line…

OK, I’ve had my Google Wave account for a few days now, and played around both by myself and with a friend. Here’s what I’ve discovered.

The first time I used Wave, it wasn’t obvious that adding someone to a wave makes that wave show up in their in-box. Maybe I’m just too used to having a “Send” button, but I’d like seeing feedback that relates my actions to older ways of doing things. Video games frequently have a “training mode” with lots more feedback about what’s happening, and give you a way to take off the training wheels as you begin to understand the idioms.

What’s the best way to IM someone? I guess each participant is supposed to keep adding new blips. Two things that don’t work are having each participant keep updating their own blip and having everyone update a single blip. Both of these work, but aren’t very usable: The former makes it hard to pair statements with responses (especially after the fact), the latter makes it hard to see who said what. But adding new blips all the time seems inconvenient. I guess I’d like a mode where hitting the Enter key opens a new blip at the bottom of the conversation. Is there a gadget for that?

How do I send someone a URL to a wave? Yeah, it’ll be sitting in the Inbox when they look, but some people don’t want to spend every waking moment within Wave. I’d like to see something that I can email or embed that other people can click on and be brought immediately to the conversation. Maybe Wave has this already and it just isn’t obvious. Let’s run a test by dragging something frfom the inbox into this blip: Four Things I Hate About Wave OK, that creates a pseudo URL (googlewave.com!w+4n77V6MDF) that I don’t think can be used anywhere outside of Wave. Fail!

I can make a wave public, but only by allowing the world to edit it. Again, maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I’d like to be able to use Wave as a blog platform. I’m like to make this blip editable only by myself (and maybe a few co-authors), while allowing the possibility of other people making comment blips that are only editable by themselves.

Zombies, a little dudes head, and a beast i saw in the carpet at the ER.

The beast had a zebra-like head, but definitely a feline torso and front paws. The hindquarters degenerated into chaotic weirdness, especially when I drew the flames on it.

Don’t ask me why it’s on fire, it’s just what I saw.

I really like Evernote and the more I use it the more I like it. For anyone who hasn’t used i

I really like Evernote and the more I use it the more I like it. For anyone who hasn’t used it, Evernote is a free piece of software that allows you to capture notes in a variety of formats and synchronise the electronic notebooks it creates with other machines via ‘the cloud’. It has lots of other features, but one thing it doesn’t do is templates.

I subscribe to the Evernote group on FriendFeed and a post from Jim Adams highlighted that “I would love to see some basic templates to use for notes. Could the functionality be added or the possibility to create my own?“. This seemed like a really good idea and whilst I’m sure the Evernote development team will implement a templating system in at least the desktop clients at some point I realised that there is a way to create new notes based on a simple template already.

Okay it isn’t the most elegant of solutions, but I figured that ENScript could be used to insert a text file into Evernote and the text file could effectively be the template. I posted the details of the ENScript syntax a while ago and so I referred back to this to put together a suitable command. A simple batch file made a good proof of concept:

@echo off
enscript createnote /s "C:\Data\Evernote\Templates\template1.txt" /d "C:\Data\Evernote\Databases3\EvernoteDatabasel.exb"

This batch file assumes that the enscript.exe file is in the same folder as the batch file or is included in the Windows PATH environment variable. The /s parameter is the location of a template file (in this case one called ‘template1.txt’). The /d parameter identifies the location of the Evernote database file. Additional parameters can also be added for a default title and tags as well as for which notebook the new note should be created in. When run the batch file inserts the content of the template file into Evernote. You can then edit the exact content of the new note.

If you wanted to expand this you could produce a batch file and template file for each template or a menu system (using your favourite scripting or programming language) that allows you to select which template file you want to insert. You could even add a keyboard shortcut to kick the template creation off to make it a more seamless experience … but at the end of the day this is a crude workaround so keep that in mind.

If you’re not a Windows user there’s also an option to automate Evernote using AppleScript on the Mac, but I don’t run Evernote on a Mac so I’ll let someone with a bit more Mac experience set that one out

Originally, I started making this list as a quick reference page for our Web Design and Development

Originally, I started making this list as a quick reference page for our Web Design and Development group at Google Groups. Unfortunately, real life interrupted and I never got this list done.

So instead of posting the incomplete list of web design and development tutorial resources to the group, I thought I’d post the start of it here. This way, the general public can comment on the resources or even add additional online websites offering tutorial resources.

Note that web design requires more than simply knowing how to code and present information in HTML & CSS. Usually in any such position, highly proficient graphic design skills are required with demonstrable hands-on knowledge of the Photoshop and Illustrator creativity application suites will also be required. Further skills such as Flash, javascript, or php & MySQL coding proficiency, or experience in SEO or online marketing may well also considered an huge asset.

The aforementioned reason is why it’s often hard to find just the type of tutorial you might require, everyone wants something different, and most tutorial resources only cover specific skillsets. One site might be offering HTML tutorials while not offering XHTML tutorials. Another site might cover the CSS standard to version 2 and completely ignore CSS3, etc…

Therefore, I am trying to build a quick reference table of online web design and development tutorial resources. I want it for my own reference as much as for anyone else’s. Technology is always evolving in this industry, so it is great to have reliable up-to-date resources from which to learn and to reference.

The W3C (the WorldWide Web Consortium) is apparently too busy developing standards and defining them with barely understandable legal speak, so do not expect any good tutorials there on the site…

http://www.w3.org/
[Standards Documentation in Legal Speak]

However, If the W3C was surely interested in leading the web technology standards, I think that they would have long ago identified their inability to communicate effectively with the rest of the world as well as addressed this problem with some easier to understand interpretations, examples and tutorials. I personally take exception to some of the things they do, the way they do them, and the way they refuse to explain their lack of reasoning in doing some of the crazy things they do.

Since they don’t recognize this issue we are left to scavenge the web for decent info and tutorials in order to just have decent results. And no one place completely covers any one standard, let along the lot of them. In fact, there is no one decent authority to rely on. Hence, I complied the following list of web design tutorials.

If you’ve got a large number of Windows 7 machines that you’ve already deployed, but now

If you’ve got a large number of Windows 7 machines that you’ve already deployed, but now need to silently deploy the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT), you’re in luck. It’s quite simple to do, and Microsoft provides the necessary tools to automate this deployment.

The RSAT pack is downloaded as a MSU file, so it is more or less treated like other Windows Updates. Normally, you can just double-click an MSU file to install it, but to automate working with MSU Windows Update files, on Vista and later, we use the wusa.exe utility. Once the RSAT is installed, it must be enabled manually by the end user, in the “Programs and Features” Control Panel applet. To automate working with Windows Features, we use the dism.exe (Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool) utility.

Download the RSAT 64-bit or 32-bit file, to a folder on your computer. Create a batch file called InstallRsat64.cmdin the same folder, and open it with your favorite text editor, and place the following in its contents:

This should install all of the available RSAT components for 64-bit Windows. The code below should install the 32-bit version (just call the batch file InstallRsat32.cmd).

I do realize that the line extends way off to the right, but just copy the whole thing, and you will get the entire command-line. If you have any issues with dism.exe, check out the log file located in %WINDIR%\Logs\Dism\dism.log.
