Am 6. November 2009 gegen 15.15 Uhr entstand in Vösendorf, im Bereich des Eingangs 7 der SCS, nach durchgeführten Flämmarbeiten ein Glimmbrand in einer Zwischendecke des Einkaufszentrums.

Ein 29jähriger Mitarbeiter einer Sicherheitsfirma, der bis zum Eintreffen der alarmierten Feuerwehr versuchte den Brand mit einem Feuerlöscher zu bekämpfen erlitt durch die starke Rauchentwicklung eine schwere Rauchgasvergiftung und mußte mit einem Notarztwagen in das Landesklinikum Thermenregion Mödling eingeliefert werden. Die Feuerwehr konnte den Brand bis 16.30 Uhr löschen.

SPEAKER: Andrew Large, CN-Pratt-Grinstad Professor of Information Studies and Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Students Faculty of Education, McGill University. ABSTRACT: User-centered design now is a well established principle when the users are adults, but has been slower to emerge when they are young people. And this is particularly the case when the intention is to involve children throughout the design process, from initial planning sessions to a completed prototype. I will present the experiences of researchers at McGill University who created a user-centered design technique they have termed “Bonded Design” in order to develop several IR interfaces for children, working closely with elementary school students as co-members of the design team. I will discuss the team’s progression from its early steps to ascertain children’s technology design ideas via interviews, through use of focus groups, to its latest application of Bonded Design to explore information visualization as a means to displaying hierarchical subject directories in children’s web portals. Lecture series is co-sponsored by University of Pittsburgh’s iSchool, Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries, and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

I run various schools drama groups, and today I started a new term at one of my regulars to be greeted by 20 kids saying “Miss!” (they call me Miss, I try not to take offence) “Miss, did we see you on telly?”

Yeah, they did. I took the dirty advertising dollar and can currently be seen during “60 Minute Makeover” pimping ScS sofas.

You can see my shame here, if you’d like.

I can’t justify it, but the money was good and much-needed at the time, and I certainly wouldn’t let commercial interests sully my own work. Oh, and hey, those sofas are really comfy.

What more can I say? (Buy an ScS sofa.)

Hehe, is there anyone out there that doesn’t love Unity Stamp Co.?  They’ve got the cutest stamps, the best kit club, the most awesome design team and now they’ve got this fabulous contest going on:  the Unity Bachelor.  So this week’s challenge was to make a card, either for Bro or a special guy in your life, inviting them on a date.  PLUS the card had to be in Bro’s fave colors:  black, red and green.  Oh, and of course you have to use Unity stamps…but that’s a given, right?  After watching a cool blog video today (I’ll find the link for you all) I knew exactly what technique I was going to try.  Here’s my date card (and if you were wondering, it’s for my sweet husband):

City Beach will be kicking off the new season of ABS on September 26th.  We are setting over 61 boulder problems for a classic red point comp.  We are also proud to feature the latest holds from the insane minds of the Chancellor bros over at So ILL.  We purchased their entire new line so expect to experience some of the freshest grips when you come to the comp.  Below is our format for the day:

HarrisCom client Scientia Advisors  recommends that the device industry set its sights on the growing neurostimulation market to meet treatment needs of individuals suffering from nerve-related disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and continence.

The advice, based on a Scientia study released today,  comes as electrical stimulation technologies  begin to supplant drugs for treating certain nerve-related disorders.  

According to Scientia managing partner Harry Glorikian: “With an aging population and increasing concern about efficacy and health care costs, there is a growing need for treatments that are quicker, safer,  more effective and less expensive than drug-based therapies,” Glorikian said.

“Neurostimulation can be advantageous to patients because it is not addictive, does not depend on individuals’ genetic makeup, and does not ordinarily cause systemic side effects,” Glorikian said. “By diminishing the need for ongoing medication and treatment, neurostimulation devices could also help reduce overall health care costs. “

In its study, Scientia found that the neurostimulation market has been growing at an average rate of 16 per cent since 2007. Scientia projects growth rates of 14- to-23 percent for certain technologies through 2012.

“Emerging companies are developing exciting new methods for treating a variety of nerve-related disorders.  With added proof of safety and clinical efficacy, we expect that doctors will increasingly recommend surgically implanted devices instead of—or along with– pharmaceuticals for many patients,” Glorikian said.

Scientia projects the most rapid growth for:

• Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), which delivers electrical impulses  to targeted areas of the brain via implanted leads and power sources. DBS is now used in treating six percent of the approximately  6 million US patients who have movement disorders such as Parkinson ’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.  DBS is in the pipeline for use in epilepsy, migraine, major depression, paralysis from stroke, and muscular and cognitive disorders.
• Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), which is used mainly for treating chronic pain. When added to conventional (pharmaceutical) therapy, Scientia reports, SCS decreases pain by 50 percent,  whereas conventional therapy alone decreases pain by just nine percent.
  
• Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS), which is currently used mainly as a last resort in treating serious bladder or fecal incontinence.  In the US, 13 million individuals—including 10 percent of US individuals over age 65– suffer from serious incontinence.  Since 1997, some 50 thousand patients have been treated with implanted SNS devices, worldwide.

 “Currently, the neurostimulation  market is dominated by a few large companies but countless others could prosper by developing or acquiring these exciting new  technologies,” Glorikian said.

Key opportunities and unmet needs include smaller devices that are easier to use,  longer battery life and better feedback mechanisms, the study found.

Scientia Advisors, based in Cambridge, MA and Palo Alto, CA,  specializes in growth strategies for major and emerging companies. Scientia advises companies based on proprietary studies, many of which are self-funded.

Estacionamento no Setor Comercial Sul

Depois de muito tempo sofrendo com a falta de estacionamentos, freqüentadores e trabalhadores do Setor Comercial Sul aguardam o início das obras no local, com mais 20 mil vagas e a resolução do problema dos flanelinhas. Veja aqui a localização do Setor no DF.

             O número de pessoas que freqüenta o Setor Comercial Sul é muito grande, em contrapartida, o número de vagas é insuficiente, o que causa transtornos e estresse aos motoristas.

            Muitos trabalhadores  e freqüentadores do SCS, por falta de tempo para achar uma vaga, deixam seu veículo nas mãos de guardadores, ou com os chamados flanelinhas, mesmo tendo risco do veículo ser multado por ficar estacionado em local proibido ou ser usado pelo guardador indevidamente e envolvendo em algum acidente.

            Raimundo Oliveira busca sua esposa todos os dias no Setor e afirma ser complicado estacionar no local. Ele diz nuca ter vaga e que sempre precisa ficar em fila dupla, mas dentro do carro para não ser multado. Além da falta de vagas Raimundo diz ser perigoso estacionar e deixar a chave com flanelinhas. “Eu vi um flanelinha saindo no carro do cliente e voltando depois de meia hora sem a permissão desse cliente”, afimou Raimundo.

            O motorista, Sérgio de Oliveira diz estar indignado com a falta de estacionamentos e com o comportamento dos guardadores. “Presenciei um flanelinha traficando descaradamente no SCS, colocando a droga em cima da árvore e depois entregando para os usuários e ele ainda fingia estar guardando os carros”, disse Sérgio.             De acordo com o delegado da área central de Brasília, Laércio Rosseto, a população precisa denunciar os abusos dos guardadores.

            A Secretaria de Justiça informou também que estuda uma forma jurídica de padronizar a atividade dos flanelinhas, mas que não pode privatizar os espaços públicos.

            Depois de denúncias e reclamações de motoristas da falta de estacionamentos no SCS e na Zona Central de Brasília, o GDF prometeu liberar em 25 dias o edital para construção das 20 mil vagas no Plano Piloto nos próximos três anos. Serão entre 10 e 12 estacionamentos subterrâneos, sendo três no SCS.

            A empresa que vencer a licitação será a que cobrar menos nos estacionamentos. Ela vai ganhar R$ 600 milhões, além de ter ajuda do Governo em caso de prejuízo. Será uma parceria pública privada e a previsão é que as obras no SCS comecem em dezembro. Veja mais sobre isso.

How do you organize photos of cards on your computer?

At the moment I do it by birthday, thank you, thinking of you, etc. like I do with my finished cards. But the other day I had the idea of doing it my stamp set. I think it would be easier to look for card ideas if I had all the similar ones together, kind of like the gallery at SCS. That way if I’m trying to figure out what to do for a workshop with a specific stamp set it would be a lot easier.

Any ideas?

La puțin timp după trimiterea primului mesaj conexiunea mea a picat. Așa că nu m-am putut ține de cuvânt și nu am putut prezenta real time ce se întâmpla acolo. Voi încerca să fac asta la eliberatica, săptămâna următoare.

Anyway, era cât pe ce să ajung secretar în comisie dar din cauza unui laborator de IV a trebuit să declin această responsabilitate. A trebuit să plec 2 ore ceea ce nu a fost frumos. Revin la ideea de a se declara zilele de scs ca fiind zile în care nu se fac laboratoare și cursuri (sau există motivații pentru participanți). Sau, se poate face orarul în așa fel încât zilele de vineri să fie foarte lejere cât să nu fie prea multe lucruri deranjate. Nu eu aleg care din variante pare mai ușoară, decizia va veni din altă parte.

Back to SCS. Au fost proiecte boring extrem de multe sau proiecte care lăsau clar impresia de încălcare de copyrigth. Au fost proiecte banale dar prezentate ca o prezentare înaintea lucrării de licență. Au fost proiecte prezentate de persoane în ani terminali care nu aveau deloc habar cum trebuie să arate o prezentare sau cum se dă zoom în power point.

Au fost și prezentări fantastice ca idee sau ca mod de prezentare dar nu cred că au fost prea multe care să le înglobeze pe ambele.

În fine, rezultatele se vor afla în curând.

Urmăriți aici și pe twitter ce se întâmplă la sesiunea de comunicări din cadrul Politehnicii, facultatea de Automatică și Calculatoare, secțiunea Inteligență Artificială și Grafică. Deși trebuia să înceapă la 8.30 la ora asta încă nu a început din lipsă de prezentatori și membri în comisie. Deși Hammerfall e ultimul proiect pe listă eu am venit de acum pentru a vedea ce se mai întâmplă dar și pentru că e mai răcoare aici decât la mine în cameră.

Păcat că nu pot sta până la final din cauza unor laboratoare. Mi s-ar părea normal ca atunci când există evenimente de o asemenea amploare în cadrul facultății toate laboratoarele și cursurile să se amâne sau ca asemenea evenimente să se desfășoare sâmbăta. Desigur, e vorba doar de câteva priorități dar cât timp nu se va putea găsi omul care să fie simultan în două locuri sau cât timp vor exista oameni care nu vor putea accepta costuri de oportunitate mai mari decât o anumită valoar va exista această problemă.

Cât timp voi sta aici voi avea un DNS și un DOT și poate voi interacționa și-n pardus. E chiar ciudat că deși am vrut să joc altfel decât în lumea reală, caracterul de acolo a ajuns să-mi semene. Se pare că există aspecte care nu le pot schimba.

SingTel, South East Asia’s biggest telecom company, reported a 17 percent drop in quarterly profit in the fourth quarter. It made S$903 million compared to previous year’s more than S$1.09 billion. For the financial year (ending 31^st March), the group’s net profit dropped 13 percent to S$3.45 billion, compared t o S$3.96 billion in the previous year.

SingTel contributed the drop in net profit to foreign exchange volatility and a good will impairment charge of S$330 million for its regional mobile associates, Warid Telecom and Pacific Bangladesh Telecom. Though, these charges were partially offset by an exceptional gain of S$217 million from Bharti’s dilution of its equity interest in a subsidy.

SingTel continue to reap benefit from its heavy investments in Asia in recent years capturing great share of fast-developing regional markets (Optus in Australia, Advanced Info Service (AIS) in Thailand, the Bharti Telecom Group in India, Globe Telecom in the Philippines, Pacific Bangladesh Telecom (PBTL), Telkomsel in Indonesia and Warid Telecom in Pakistan). Since, its operations outside Singapore accounts for more than two-thirds of its business, the group remains sensitive to currency movements in the region.

SingTel reported 35 percent annual growth in its regional mobile subscriber base. As of March 31, the number of mobile subscribers increased by 64 million from a year earlier to 249.4 million.

According to official statement Australia and Singapore continued strong momentum and showed resilience with their impressive growth despite the economic uncertainties. SingTel has performed particularly well in its home turf to register 12.7 percent revenue growth (including revenue from SCS) and a quarterly net profit of S$428 million (61.3% growth). In Singapore, revenues from its wireless broadband internet customers largely compensated for lower ARPU and minutes of usage (MOU) from mobile business. Its “Mio” service (broadband and IPTV services) too started gaining traction among locals.

In a statement the company mentioned that while its results for the coming financial years will be affected by foreign exchange fluctuations, future earnings growth will not be dependent on acquisition. The company is expected to focus on controlling its costs amid continued market uncertainties and suggested infrastructure sharing as one resort in some markets.

Aplicação do produto inseticida formulado em matéria inerte tipo pó seco sem odor e com reduzido grau tóxico, com alto poder residual, atuando por contato.
A aplicação destina- se exclusivamente aos focos situados em pontos com eletricidade como: eletrodutos, caixas de fusíveis e telefone, centrais elétricas e motores elétricos, luminárias, ou ainda determinados espaços falsos ou vagos como alguns tipos de forrações.

Gel inseticida:
Aplicação de inseticida em forma de Gel tipo isca alimentar, totalmente inodoro e antialérgico, de longa durabilidade e efeito residual, sendo extremamente palatável e atrativo as baratas e formigas. Ele atua por ingestão acaba por tornar- se um controlador rápido e eficiente atuando diretamente nas colônias.
A aplicação destina- se aos focos ou áreas infestadas, pontos de passagem, alimentação e habitat do inseto a se exterminado ou controlado, tornando – se uma ferramenta indispensável para locais onde não seja possível a aplicação de inseticidas em outras formulações ou até pela praticidade como: portas de geladeira e refrigeradores, máquinas e equipamentos de preparo de alimentos de cozinhas e refeitórios, mesas e móveis de escritórios, equipamentos eletroeletrônicos, pontos de luz e centrais elétricas. Ele é extremamente útil também em casos onde não seja possível a remoção do pessoal ou a preparação adequada da área.

Nebulização:
Aplicação de inseticida diluído em água e espargido em forma de névoa com ajuda de aparelhos elétricos.
A aplicação destina- se a depósitos carregados ou salas com muitos móveis onde o acesso com líquido torna- se difícil, ou como complemento e coadjuvante em diversos tipos de controle.

Monitoramento:
Acompanhamento dos resultados por inspeções aos pontos de foco, medindo o controle por área ou seção com auxílio da inspeção técnica, questionário no local e aplicação de armadilhas de captura para controle de nível de infestação.

Kaum zu glauben, aber wahr, heute hab ich es endlich geschafft, mir ein neues Notebook zu besorgen. Es ist ein Notebook Dimotion FastBook F5H1 geworden, in schwarz. Das Notebook lag bei der DiTech-Filiale in der SCS  zum Abholen bereit. Gegen 10 vor 10 war ich da…

Dann allerdings kam der Kampf mit dem Computer. Der wollte und wollte das Teilchen nicht verkaufen und hat Zusatzbarcodes und ähnliches gefordert. Anders als in anderen Elektronikgeschäften gewohnt, nahm der Herr den Kampf couragiert auf, hat zwei Kollegen befragt und es nach ca. 7 Minuten auch geschafft, die elektronischen Hürden zu umgehen. Dabei war er die ganze Zeit freundlich und kommunikativ. Ein richtig freudiges Erlebnis also. Zu guter Letzt hab ich dann noch bemerkt, dass die Filiale sogar bis 19.30 Uhr offen hat. Super, das kannte ich bislang auch nicht. Nun sitze ich da, das viel bewunderte, im Vergleich zu meinem alten Notebook relativ kleine (Displaydiagonale  15,4″) und noch dazu zum super Preis erworbene (599 Euro anstatt 999 wg. “Dienstag ist Ditech Tag”-Aktion), Teilchen vor mir und tippe darauf. Alles funktioniert super, das Ding macht keine Geräusche die nicht sein sollten und das Ganze wirkt sehr hochwertig. Diesen Beitrag tippe ich schon darauf. Hach, wie ist das schön, wenn Wünsche in Erfüllung gehen
