Recently, I am working on a paper sculpture for my second project of VA301 and while I was searching I came across with an amazing sculptor. Bert Simons makes very beautiful 3 dimensional pseudo realistic paper portraits and sculptures. Also, I liked his plain but effective web designs. Click here and see more of his works.

I have got to figure out how to pace myself! Having the ability to concentrate on nothing but art all day, every day, is crazy and I find I am just exhausting myself. Coming in with a plan was great, because it means I can jump in without wasting any time thinking, but I might have dived in a little too deep right from the start. I should probably slow down and build up some studio endurance. But wow does it feel good to be able to live in the studio if I want. And spread out!! I can have separate areas for different materials so stuff doesn’t get contaminated, or have 5 molds in process at the same time, or everything at once if I want. It’s amazing!

And now some images that hint at what I’ve been working on. I did these test casts before leaving Boston:

Earlier, in june this year, Japanese architecture studio Schemata poured color epoxy on the top board of school desks which were used in elementary schools. The now ‘Flat’ desks were before uneven due to time deterioration or scribbling. Although the school desks all have the same shape, they gradually gain individual character through the personal items of the pupil, like a school bag or a hat. However, in this project, the individuality of the desks is regenerated through colors, thanks to the craftsmanship and expertise of Nakamura Shuhei. He reset the the unevenness to ‘flat’ with translucent color epoxy. Deep points are mirrored by dense colors and shallow points by more transparent shades. This project is part of the ‘Flat Project’ series.

Currently schemata is displaying their ‘Flat’ project series in an exhibition at happa gallery, Tokyo.

We finally finished the carrying cases for Optikerne in Copenhagen. They orered 4 of the custom aluminium boxes. All of them featured our trademark crocodile and black leather band.

The engraved crocodiles are actually designs for a sculpture by Royce Milaskey. 4 of them were cast in bronze in Hungray in 2004. They stand on marble bases about 2 meters high and feature either a blown glass lamp or propane flame. They can now be found in Sun Valley Idaho.

Helsinki International Artist-in-Ressidence Program (HIAP) offers accommodation and studio-space for free of charge. The studio complex is located in a Unesco World Heritage -site, Suomenlinna island in Helsinki. It seems like a beautiful island, indeed! Each of the artists’ studios occupy from 80 to 120 sqms of floor space. It is only a 15-minute ferry ride from the heart of the city. They do not mention about the accessibility to materials and tools on their web site, but that is  the least concern for me because I like to make works from what is available at the site. As long as they have beautiful large space, I’m happy. What I also like about their program is that they have the Project Room, which is a 70 m2 multipurpose space for solo and group exhibitions, screenings, concerts, public lectures, workshops and other events.

Application should include CV, project proposal, portfolio or extensive samples of previous work, and full personal and contact information, including email-address.

On their web site, they also have images of works and comments from each artist, who have been to the residency. It’s helpful!

Like the moon, and animals, the skull has been a focus of artistic meditation since as long as our kind has had the luxury of taking a break from hunting and gathering.  This work feels both ancient and completely contemporary.  Jim Skull website has what seems like an endless variety of a meditative jute maze meandering through human history.

And then there is this…the opposite and equal reaction.  I, of course, really respond to the materials, both low on the craft totem pole, almost to the scout project level, which is why I find it captivating.

Creative Boost provides a residency program for both emerging and established artists. It is located in the heart of downtown Montreal, so residents are always accessible to many cultural activities and festivals. They offer residents language courses and activities with other artists from all over the world. You can learn a new language during residency…how efficient!? They are keen on connecting residents to teachers and professors in addition to local and international artists. At the end of residency, they offer their gallery space to exhibit artist’s work for a week. This is one of the few programs that have a fully equipped clay and sculpture studio. If you choose to take a private studios, it will be accessible 24 hours a day. The only concern for me is the expense for the accommodation and the studio space, they seem quite high for my standard. Application includes an application form and your portfolio, with a proposal of projects and activities during the residency period and a list of required materials. Compared to other programs, Creative Boost seems very organized and reliable.
