If you have not seen the movie yet, go rent it. I will go buy it so I can watch it everyday of my life. I LOVE IT! And I got to see it with the most amazing cast ever. That would be the awesome SDS cast of Scuba Lessons. We have the most amazing director and the retreat today was so much fun. I only have 2 words left to say. Catch It!!!!!

Student pressure this year prompted the University of Maryland and 90 other universities to cancel contracts with Russell Athletic for violating labor standards at a factory in Honduras.
Smaller firms have far fewer choices. Too puny to be able to tap capital markets, they are at the mercy of the banks. America’s large firms get 30% of their financing from the banks; its smaller enterprises rely on them for 90% of their financing needs. In Europe small companies are in a similar bind. Bank lending to businesses in the euro zone fell by 1.2% year-on-year in October. True, lower lending volumes reflect weakening demand for bank credit as well as constrained supply.

So my strategy of shorting the Ultrashort was a success. I got into my short position in SDS in Augu

So my strategy of shorting the Ultrashort was a success. I got into my short position in SDS in August at $45, and sold mid-october at $40, for a gain of $5. Nothing too crazy, and I’m not entirely sure how much of the decay in price was due to the decay I mentioned earlier. I would guess most of that is actually a rising S&P. I could have held on a bit longer, but honestly, I am a tad nervous about the frothy stock market and the potential for a big one-day dip a la 1987. So I’m happy with my 10%. It would have been nice to get into that position at the S&P’s lows back in March where you could have opened a short position north of $100.

Another interesting thing to look at, has been the incredible weakness of the dollar. This is especially true against higher-yielding currencies such as the Australian dollar, which it looks is the first major economy to have its central bank raise interest rates. Given the dire employment situation in the US, it looks as though the FED’s printing presses will stay in overdrive for a while – attempting to flood the market with liquidity. What this means in practical terms is that there is no way the US is raising interest rates any time soon, meaning that aside from the use of the dollar as a “safe haven” currency in the event of another panic, the dollar could potentially be a great currency to fund a carry trade. For instance, look at shorting dollars, long australian dollars. The interest rate differential isabout 3%. This can be realized by anyone with the stones to dabble in FX. Look at Oanda for instance: http://fxtrade.oanda.com/tools/statistical_information/oanda_interest_rates.shtml – 2.85% spread. Now assuming you are willing to leverage that a bit, you could find yourself doing quite well – especially if Australia raises rates again.

The thing to watch out for though, is political pressure mounting within Australia given the massive rise in its currency over the last 9 months or so. Another place to look at for high yielding currencies – Turkey, Brazil, and New Zealand.

A RECENT PRESS REPORT about a tomato that was inexpertly tossed in the direction of former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin in the Mall of America recalls a similar incident that occurred in Frankfurt forty-one years ago. That time the thrower not only had a better aim, but her historic toss also helped launch a revolution in the way women and men would see one another in Central Europe for the next four decades and beyond.

A whiff of revolution

Temperatures were rising on West German campuses in the late 1960s. Disgusted at what they perceived as a repressive conservative society wrapped around a loathsome Nazi past, a new generation of university students took to the streets, demanding a revolution in social relations. The movement they created has gone down in history as the “Extraparliamentary Opposition.”

But society fought back. In 1967 a West Berlin policeman shot student Benno Ohnesorg dead during a demonstration against a state visit by the “fascist” Shah of Iran. The following spring, a young neonazi put a bullet through the skull of the young Marxist revolutionary Rudi Dutschke. Fidel Castro and Chairman Mao had by this time supplanted John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King as progressive role models. A range of new organisations sprang up, ranging from gentle pacifist groups dedicated to “free love” all the way to the blooththirsty, bomb-throwing Red Army Faction. Those groups hovering in between, collectively known as Spontis (from the word “spontaneous”), skillfully captured headlines by occupying university buildings and publicly humiliating authority figures from the bourgeois “Establishment” – preferably by lobbing rotten fruit and vegetables at them. But despite their diversity, there is one thing all of these organisations shared in common: they were dominated by men…

The central bank on Nov. 24 cut the benchmark a ninth time since April to a record low 9 percent in an effort to reduce the extra return on ruble investments and cap speculative gains in the currency that are hurting exporters. Even after policy easing, Russia remains a “no-brainer for the short-term carry trade,” Gilman said, as the country’s benchmark is still higher than rates in Brazil, India and China.

We closed out our Citi position and posted a loss of $144.98. We also posted a loss on SDS of $16.98. I can say that SDS is nothing but a shot at the top, which could pay off big on the downside. Our loss was purely on commission today.

We also sold 250 shares of NOG from our holdings for a $.29 share for a profit of $72.50. I’ll book the total profit from the NOG trade when we do finally close all of our holdings. Currently we are holding 300 shares of NOG risk free in a long position. Tomorrow we’ll open our trailing stop at entry and hopefully we’ll see another leg up in energy and continue our run with NOG.

Today we saw new records in commodities sector. Market signals were stubbornly bullish today, showing that we do have more room to the upside as expressed by the higher trading volume.

Buying call options on volatility has rarely looked as attractive as is the case today if this Dubai situation turns into something even fractionally similar to what happened in places like Thailand, Russia or Argentina. Once the complacency is shaken out of the market, which in our view would be a good thing, it is going to give those who have been skeptical over this “liquidity-induced” rally a chance to take out our rulers and sharpen our pencils.

Will the tail wag the dog again? Or, more specifically, will the rise of sovereign credit default swaps drive pricing in government bond markets? The Dubai shock has highlighted disconnects between the two markets. The traditional flight-to-safety bid led U.S. Treasurys and U.K. gilts to rally sharply. But the nature of the shock – a reminder that governments have balance-sheet constraints – pushed up the cost of insuring even high-quality sovereigns against default. That suggests

Over the weekend, Mr Cowen developed the argument in a New York Times piece:

If you were counting on what Glenn Reynolds calls “the retail support brigade” to come riding over the hills, you might want to rethink. After last year turned in one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in decades, people were hoping that things might perk up this year, but Black Friday’s results don’t look too good for retailers. Sales were up a paltry 0.5% from last year, and that only because a lot more people came out bargain-hunting.

And so it starts. Currently we are still in ‘pilot’ phase of the Individual Budget roll-out – the fo

And so it starts. Currently we are still in ‘pilot’ phase of the Individual Budget roll-out – the forefront of the personalisation and self-directed support agenda and if that sentence made little sense to you – you can probably count yourself lucky!

Very basically there is an ideologically welcome move towards more control by users of services around the services they receive which is a very noble and worthy cause. We are trying to work through some of the details and our local authority is trying to put systems together through the pilots that have been running. While I’d like to hide my head in the sand and pretend nothing is changing, not because I don’t think it is a worthy ideal, but rather because of the intense increase in bureaucracy and the time needed to work through the new and somewhat shaky systems being put into place.

I decided that I really needed to be positive and try to actually understand what was to be happening because it isn’t going away and so, in conjunction with a service user and her daughter (main carer) who want to engage with the process and ‘see how it works’, I am doing what I can to work through the systems as they exist.

The main pilots so far have focussed on younger adults with disabilities, people with learning disabilities and older adults with fairly straightforward care packages.

Although at the time, I explained I felt they needed to tackle some of the more complex examples at the time, mental health services were very much left out of the ‘loop’ of information.

Currently, I have assisted in the completion of the self-assessment questionnaires and have validated them. As the service user in question as fairly advanced Alzheimer’s type dementia, there was a significant input from her family and carers and I assisted considerably myself – so the ‘self-assessment’ idea was somewhat lost through that process but I felt it was important to work through the ‘processes’ with a person who has little capacity to engage actively with the assessments and realistically, it will involve many of the users of our service.

I tackled the RAS (Resource Allocation System) although I’m not entirely confident it is ‘correct’ and so my next task is to take the documents to a meeting to discover what the ‘indicative budget’ is and then, assuming all goes well, to return to patient and carer (I am running two different applications side-by-side – one for service user and a different one for carer in her own right).

I might have messed the entire thing up of course, but as I expected to user and carer themselves, the worst thing that could happen at this point is remaining with the status quo while I spend time working things out. The positive outcome would be more flexibility to choose carers and tasks that are more appropriate to their individual circumstances and to have more input into the support packages that provide the best outcomes.

But.. and this is the big but.. so far, getting as far as we have, namely writing up all the documentation and putting the forms, assessments, resource allocations etc has taken me the good part of a couple of days. That’s not including the three specific visits each of at least an hour to work through the actual assessment forms. Which would be fine and dandy if that linked in with the time taken on other work, emergency assessments, people being discharged from hospital, rushing to court to get warrants etc.

Suffice to say the team isn’t overly heartened by the lack of support in implementing these new systems – the local authority has put a lot of support into the Community Care teams with additional workers and weekly support groups but in the bleak and distant mental health teams, we are left increasingly on the periphery and detached further from the general information streams and planning but my thought is that at least by attempting it, we won’t be completely left out and if I make a mess of my attempts, at least I am identifying a genuine training need!

Hopefully, I’ll be able to update the process as I go through it.. .

Trend-following funds are part of a group managing $92 billion that returned 18% last year when broader markets plunged, according to Hedge Fund Research. ETF Portfolio Management’s funds and the broad group of trend-following hedge funds have slightly negative returns in 2009.

Friday 20 Nov

ArtSoc 1213

6pm

Folks from NYC are coming in to chat about the usefulness and recent history of student occupations . . .

Unpacking the radical transformations in higher education over the past decade, we’ll take a look at the corporatization of private universities like the New School, the privatization of public universities in Europe and the United States, and the backlash against the rising costs of tuition, the lack of employment potentials, and the ubiquitous burden of student debt.

Then we’ll talk specifically about the New School and the series of events leading up to the December and April occupations there.

Finally, we discuss occupation as a political tactic and medium of dissent, attempting to answer questions like:

Is occupation a means to an end, or is it a “pure means?”

Is it effective in the sense that it ‘gets something done,’ or is it better employed as an affective form protest?

What is affective protest? And why not lobby for reform, picket, or join the student senate?

Above all, we hope to offer what we’ve learned from our experiences at the New School to other university communities with a desire to resist and affect change.”

WHY STUDENT OCCUPATIONS?

An occupation is a break in capitalist reality that occurs when people directly take control of a space, suspending its normal functions and animating it as a site of struggle and a weapon for autonomous power.

Occupations are a common part of student struggles in France, where for example in 2006 a massive youth movement against the CPE (a new law that would allow employers to fire first-time workers who had been employed for up to 2 years without cause) occupied high schools and universities and blockaded transit routes.

In 1999, the National Autonomous University of Mexico City was occupied for close to a year to prevent tuition from being charged. Both of these struggles were successful.

In Greece and Chile, long and determined student struggles have turned campuses into cop-free zones, which has in turn led to their use as vital organizing spaces for social movement involving other groups like undocumented migrants and indigenous people.
