When the sun started to play hide and seek, I was listening to the game of waves, cunningly my side look went towards the lovers who all are in the edge of lust, and suddenly the past pulled the flavors of feelings out of the blue. All these emotions at once abruptly broken by his voice, “Sir, want some popcorn?” He left from the place after my “No”. Again my sympathetic look followed his shadow, his young legs violently snubbed the sand and me too.

Vietnam, US boost cooperation in sea ports

QĐND – Monday, November 23, 2009, 16:51 (GMT+7)

Vietnam and the United States have pledged to boost the development of sea ports and transportation services in Can Tho and Houston to raise trade value between the two countries.

A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed on Nov. 20 in Texas by General Director of the Port of Houston Authority Aleg Dryer and Director of Can Tho Port Pham Thanh Tien.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, General Director Dryer said that the Port of Houston Authority would like to expand cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and sea transportation with many countries, especially in Asia. Vietnam is one of the countries in which the Houston municipal authorities have a keen interest.

Vice Chairman of the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee Tran Tuan Anh invited leaders of Houston city to visit Can Tho to realize the recently-signed MoU, paving the way for transportation of goods from Vietnam to the US through the Port of Houston.

The Port of Houston is the US ’s largest port in terms of goods transportation between the US and other countries.

Happy Birthday, Cutty Sark

Today, November 22nd, it is 140 years since the Cutty Sark was launched.

The Cutty Sark was a clipper. Clippers were fast sailing ships, with square sails and multiple masts. They could not carry a particularly large cargo, but specialised in moving freight quickly, especially in transporting tea from China to Britain.

The Cutty Sark was launched in 1869 in Dambarton, Scotland. Initially, she ran the tea trade, but as steamships began to take that role over, she switched to transporting wool from Australia. She was the fastest ship on that route, posting a best time of only 72 days.

She then passed through a succession of owners, eventually being used as a training ship from 1922. She was displayed in 1951 in the Festival of Britain, and then was moved in 1954 to a dry dock in Greenwich. Since then, more than 16 million people have paid her a visit.

To walk inside the Cutty Sark is an amazing experience. As a child, I remember being taken to see her by my grandfather. I can still remember the smell of the wood, and the creaking of the planks. Her external appearance is graceful in the extreme, and it doesn’t take much imagination to think of her skipping through the waves at nearly 30 miles an hour.

Tragically, she was badly damaged by fire in 2007. It turned out however that only a small proportion of the original timbers had been destroyed by the fire, and restoration has been possible, at a cost of £35 million. She is due to re-open to visitors, having been extensively restored, in Spring 2011.

I can’t wait.

4 Tourist In Mecca Die From The Swine Flu Virus

The H1N1 Swine Flu virus knows no borders,has no boundaries, and has absolutely no respect for religious or cultural traditions.

This year at the annual Hajj to Mecca, Four foreign pilgrims have died of swine flu, the Saudi Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

The Saudi Arabia Health Ministry said none of the four foreign victims had been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus, as has been recommended by The Health Ministry.

An official statement released by the ministry said all had underlying health problems, including cancer and respiratory illness, AFP news agency reported.

Three of the victims died in Medina and one in Mecca.

The BBC is reporting that….up to three million Muslims from around the world take part in the holy pilgrimage every year, but health officials have expressed fears that it could provide a breeding ground for the virus.

Authorities had tried to prepare for any outbreaks by installing thermal cameras at airports and sea terminals, deploying 15,000 additional health workers and ensuring hundreds of extra beds were available.

The Hajj (Arabic: حج‎ Ḥaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world,^[1] and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a moral obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (God).^[2] The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. The Health Minister has reported that there are 16 other people that have been diagnosed with swine flu and four remain in hospital in “critical condition”.

He added 12 others had recovered following treatment.

The Saudi government has recommended the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases and children skip the Hajj this year.

The Saudi government has said all pilgrims need a certificate of vaccination before they can apply for a visa.

This is real people, and this disease is spreading worldwide,at a rapid pace.

I encourage everyone to get a H1N1 swine flu shot as soon as you can.The reports of any side effects are exaggerated, and will cause millions of people to perish from the lack of the vaccine.

Any paranoia surrounding any alledged complications from the shot are totally unsubstantiated, and if those people out there insist on not receiving the vaccine, then we as a society should only expect more mounting mass casualties from the swine flu, as exhibited this weekend, unfortunately in Mecca.

If it can happen in Mecca, it can happen anywhere.

Please everyone, wash your hands, and go get the shot.

The rather insane heat wave in the past week was an unwelcome reminder of how hot the Australian summer can be. Scanning through photos of last week’s visit to Sculpture by the Sea I wonder what will power prevented me from flinging myself into the sea rather than be jostled around by the thousands of visitors on the last day of exhibition. This year’s exhibition was bigger than before, stretching along from Bondi to Tamarama.

I met up with Y and B at the beginning of the walk, before quickly losing them within the crowd of sight seers while waiting for T. While waiting, it struck me again how the setting managed to steal the thunder away from the many sculptures around the area. On a beautiful summer day, Bondi with its jeweled coloured sea and blindingly blue sky dominated the setting and it was almost easy to forget why I was there in the first place.

Wandering along the path, it was great to see some familiar work. Keid Moseholm was a regular exhibitor with his easily recognisable sumo like figures in bronze and granite.

I loved Phil Price’s Morpheus, this wind driven sculpture danced with each breeze through a number of fluid, graceful permutation that was mesmerising to watch. Had they install this sculpture in the middle of the city, I would happily spend my lunch time watching it for hours.

Other noticeable sculptures for me was the Big Drink (also known as the straw), Stephen King’s The Eight, Brenner and Medwell’s visual pun of Step by step, inch by inch…towards the precipice made out of sand shoes and Marguerite Derricourt’s delightful rat race.
