I waited too long to back up my laptop. In fact, I waited close to eight weeks, which is about seve

I waited too long to back up my laptop. In fact, I waited close to eight weeks, which is about seven weeks too long.

You see, I got overwhelmed with taking care of my son, launching a new business, and running a blog. I was sleep deprived and working until utter exhaustion every night. {It’s not quite “my dog ate my homework,” but it’s the absolute truth!}

Somehow, the difficulty involved in backing up each document that I’d updated that week month was far more than my brain could handle. Besides, my current back-up drive was already fairly maxed out on space. It’s not like I could just back up “My Documents;” I had to be selective, which was tedious and time-consuming.

So, what happened next is quite predictable. Actually, I was in the process of turning on my laptop and plugging in my back-up drive to do what I’d procrastinated for so long.

And then, I got the blue screen of death. I never want to have to write another post like that, again. It was dreadful not knowing whether I could recover photos of my son.

Photos like this one taken over the summer…

It’s true that it takes a data loss in order for you to get paranoid about backing things up and avoiding that costly mistake again in the future.

—-

This story does have a happy ending.

—-

I was able to get my data recovered from my hard drive that had somehow become unseated within a certain corrupted sector–whatever that means. It was expensive. PAINfully expensive. But, I needed photos of my sweet son, those marketing brochures I had created from scratch, and 6 weeks worth of electronic patient files that I did not want to re-create. Ugh.

Funny thing is, once the data recovery company retrieved the data, they sent it to me on a Seagate hard drive.

My retrieved data arrived the week after I received a Seagate Replica for review.

Fast

It took 2 minutes to install and register the Replica’s software so that it was ready-to-use. If you can avoid using your computer during the initial back-up, it may take only 3 hours. This complete back-up system backs up everythang, including the operating system, programs, and settings. Oh. YEAH.

Smart

The Replica automatically removes the oldest backed-up versions of files to free up space for newer versions. How clever!

The single greatest benefit of the Replica is that you can leave it plugged into your PC, and it will automatically back-up any newly updated files. It’s got a great memory, so you don’t need to worry about forgetting what to back-up.

Ta-da! Back-ups are completed automatically. How’s that for effortless and extremely valuable?

If you take your laptop with you to the local java house to hammer out a post or a chapter of that book that you’re writing, never fear. Just plug in the Replica when you get home, and it’ll back up everything in a jiffy.

Compact

It’s slim and petite. 5 1/2″ wide, 4″ deep, and 3/4″ tall, it doesn’t take up much room. It weighs just over a half-pound.

Storage-heavy

Weighing in at 250 GB, I won’t be running out of room anytime soon. I can keep photos, videos, and tons of other files on there for years to come. Now, I wish I had one of these 4 months ago. That would have been great.

*The multi-PC version of the Replica ($179.99) has 500 GB of storage space, and a storage dock.

Perfect Gift

Do you know of a blogger, parent who loves to store digital photos of her children, or someone who’s particularly engrossed on working on a PC? The Seagate Replica ($129.99) would make a great gift. You could help someone prevent a considerably expensive and mournful data loss with a simple and easy solution.

Note: The Replica requires Microsoft® Windows® XP (Service pack 2 or higher) OR Windows Vista®.

WIN IT!

One winner will receive a Seagate Replica for Single PC , (retail value $129.99). Stay in-the-know and become a Seagate Fan on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

There’s an old expression I like: “Different isn’t better, it’s just differe

There’s an old expression I like: “Different isn’t better, it’s just different.”

When it comes to SSDs based around a SATA or SAS format — that’s pretty much the case in my view. Yes there are exceptional products suited for enterprise like Pliant and STEC. And, yes — there are more conventional items for consumers like Intel and OCZ (and about 20 others). And yes, the standard pacakge 3.5″ form factor for these devices make them suitable for shared storage as well as for integration into hetreogenous and homogenous storage environments like you might find in a typical data center. Embracing these SSDs you will find the usual manufacturers like EMC, NetApp, SUN, and others. Their use of SSD is evolutionary, easy to digest.

PCIe-based SSDs are very different. For one thing, they sit on the server system bus right next to the CPU. This is a direct attached (DAS) model that has numerous advantages for certain types of processing. We agree that not all PCIe-based SSDs are suitable for all applications — but in terms of applications that can take advantage of bandwidth, throughput, and latency enhancements, these devices are indeed a superior architecture.

There are some challenges:

1) Not all servers are created equal. PCIe-based devices require strict adherance to the PCIe specifications at the server level. Ping if you want to learn more about why this is critical.

2) Many servers do not have enough PCIe slots configure appropriately for PCIe devices. This is especially true when creating HIGH AVAILABILITY (or HA) environments.

3) Only a very few servers have enough of the right type of slots to be meaningful from a value perspective. It makes no sense to refresh a server for a PCIe-based SSD if you have to spend 2x or 3x to get the right slots, power, etc.

4) Applications may not be optimized for SSD DAS. No kidding. OLTP or DBMS applications that can take the most advantage of SSD DAS are optimized for high latency disk access over networks such as NAS. These applications are totally comfortable sending out 1000s or 10s of 1000s of transaction requests to build up a queue depth for the CPUs. The net result of this is that the CPUs appear very busy but in fact aren’t doing very much. These limitations are known and well defined. Over time, application vendors such as SUN, Oracle, and Microsoft will implement fixes to optimize PCIe-based storage.

Aside from these items, there is a discussion regarding suitability of NAND flash devices in the data center as well as the MLC/SLC issue. I’ll tackle those in another post. In my veiw, MySpace and Wine.com are leading the way — and there are many others who have not come forward publicly preferring to keep the ROI and GREEN advantages all to themselves.

The latest announcements from Fusion-io, Texas Memory Systems, Micron and others point out these differences. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a former employe of Fusion-io.

The title of this post pretty much says it all… but let me elaborate. Had the main hard drive

The title of this post pretty much says it all… but let me elaborate.

Had the main hard drive die on my media box the other day. My own fault… dumb setup… one of the first PC’s that I ever built and I failed to put any redundancy into the system (RAID, etc). As a result, I’m facing the daunting task of reloading 1TB (backups of my DVD collection).

A quick side note… for those of you who don’t have a computer hooked to your TV, consider doing it. Once you’ve copied your music and movie collections over to the computer, it is so nice not having to mess with discs anymore. You can just put them in the closet and forget them. You don’t have to worry about scratches, kids getting fingerprints on them, etc.

Anyway, I ordered two new 1TB drives and an 80GB for the OS (stick with Western Digital drives… never had one fail but this is my third Seagate failure)… NewEgg.com is awesome, great price and had them in my hands with free shipping in three days. When they came, I had the sinking realization that I’m out of SATA cables for the two extra drives that I was going to add. I figure “no problem”, I’m going to the gym tonight so I’ll swing by Best Buy which is only two blocks from there.

I get to Best Buy, find two SATA cables on the shelf (price sticker underneath is blank), and head to the checkout. $43… WTF??? Totally pissed, I decline to pay for them, and upon returning home, pull up NewEgg’s website and order a handful of 5-star rated SATA cables for $2 apiece.

Instead of shaking my head in disbelief, I’m just going to chalk this one up to “should have known better”. Let me explain;

As a computer programming major in college, I had a lot of programming software on my machine that I didn’t have on my wife or kid’s computers. So when I suffered a power supply failure my senior year during the middle of a big project, I didn’t have time to wait. I ran to Best Buy and had to bite my tongue while purchasing a 500 watt power supply from them for $100. After getting my computer back up and running, I went to NewEgg’s website knowing that I wasn’t going to like what I saw. Sure, that exact same PS was $60 with free shipping on their site.

Or how about the Dynex (Best Buy proprietary brand) internal USB All-In-One card reader that I bought for my wife for Christmas last year. Spent a day trying to get that thing to work on three different PC’s before finally giving up, returning it, and then going through the frustration again because the replacement didn’t work either.

Or when we bought our new 42″ HD LCD also for Christmas last year. Wasted my time checking Best Buy before finally purchasing the exact same model from NewEgg for almost $300 less and again, free shipping to my door.

Or how about the stack of several hundred Dynex DVD-R’s that my wife bought me for my birthday two years ago when I started backing up our movie and music collections. Sure, she thought she was getting a good deal price-wise, but now they are just sitting in the corner in my office collecting dust because I won’t even bother with them and their 50% burn failure rate anymore. Just pick one up and you’ll realize they are crap… only about 3/4 the thickness of a real DVD.

In summation, Best Buy is DEAD to me. Their prices suck, their proprietary brand is garbage, and my eight year-old knows more about tech than most of their floor staff (I asked one of their salespeople how much memory a particular laptop on their shelf had and he quoted me the hard drive size).

At the risk of sounding like a paid advertisement, shop NewEgg.com for all of your tech needs. The prices are awesome, emailed questions are answered quickly and knowledgeably, shipping is free for a lot of their stuff, and their customer service is great if you do have any issues. Also, they allow customers to leave feedback on all of the items that they sell so that you can see quickly whether people feel that a particular item is a turd or not (I stick with the 5-star rated items and have never had a bad experience).

Fry’s is now offering Western Digital’s Element 1.5TB external USB drive for under $100. That’s about $66 per terabyte. A better deal than the already low $78 price tag for SimpleTech’s 1TB drive.

WD beats Seagate on low price

Our last check on the external 1.5TB drive category showed a Seagate disk for $125.

On the same page today, Fry’s is advertising Seagate’s 1.5TB internal drive for $100; still more expensive than Samsung’s 1.5TB drive that sold for $80 in early October!

For next week’s Black Friday, I expect most of the drive makers to align their price to Western Digital’s and perhaps to go as low as $100 for an external 2TB drive or a whopping $50 a terabyte. Currently, an external 2TB drive costs about $170.

At the current pace, an internal 2TB drive will cost under $100 in about 6 months.

So by the same time next year, it will be as hard to find 1TB drives as it today for 500GB! And I won’t be surprised to find some Black Friday deals for 2TB drives (internal or external) close to the $100 barrier.

Interestingly, the 1.5TB drive category didn’t really had time to establish itself in the market, squeezed by the super low cost 1TB drives and the 2TB drives.

In the 2TB internal drive category, Hitachi – which also owns the low-cost Simpletech brand – and Seagate are the price leaders. For 1TB internal drives, Western Digital is still the company to beat at less than $60.

Thank you all for responding to my previous post! I was going pretty crazy over that, I can tell you, but all the support both here and on FB really allowed my temper to calm!

So, the drive is in Level 3 Data Recovery at the Geek Squad DRD Lab. Apparently, they had to take it apart, re-mount the plates, and try to get stuff off. Please join me in my prayers to St. Anthony and St. Jude that they can get all the information off. It will be weeks before we know but I’m prepared for whatever they tell me now.

Either way, both Seagate and the Geek Squad have been wicked awesome about all of this, even through my hysterical phase. Seagate is even going to replace the drive after all the hulabaloo is done. And the Geek Squad has given me everything that I’ve asked for, and more.

Super companies + Super customer service = much calmer me.

I’ll update y’all when I hear anymore.

Hello world.

Here we have some unboxing pics of a Seagate 1Tb external hard drive. I was contemplating between the Seagate and the Western Digital but since the WD was out of stock I went with the Seagate. It should be known that the WD comes with a 3 year warranty whilst the Seagate only has a 2 year limited warranty, so if you might want to take this into account when purchasing. I believe they both sell for around the same price. There is no software to install and works like any other hard drive, simply drop and drag.

This is a 3.5″ inch drive and requires power in order for it to operate. It spins at 7200rpm and runs comparatively quick to another external hard drive I use. Sorry guys but I won’t be posting any speed tests or anything like that. One thing that I noticed and particularly liked was that there were different socket power plugs for use on every continent all over the world. This would come particularly handy when you travel overseas and take your hard drive with you. There is a small green led next to the Seagate logo that flashes when the device is on.

The hard drive will automatically turn on when plugged into your computer and will turn off when you safely remove it. The cable supplied is a mini usb to usb cable and is sufficiently long as is the power cable. I personally find the hard drive sleek and attractive. The material used on the casing does not attract fingerprints, however the Seagate drive must be positioned flat and cannot be used upright unlike the WD My Book. Overall, I have no gripes with this device and recommend it to anyone looking for a no fuss drive that does what it is supposed to do at a good price.
