Love and monogamy in the Syngnathid fishes (Hippocampus and related genera) Dr. Calvin Cheung, quack

Love and monogamy in the Syngnathid fishes (Hippocampus and related genera)

Dr. Calvin Cheung, quack PhD

Zoological Research, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta.

Abstract:

Monogamy is defined as a type of mating system in which one male and one female mate exclusively with each other within a breeding season. Although rarely observed among fishes, it has been exceptionally well-documented among the Family Syngnathidae: comprising of the seahorses (Hippocampus) and pipefish (Corythoichthys). Both genera are noted for their peculiar appearance and intriguing behaviour. One of these behaviours includes daily morning greetings, during which the two individuals perform a synchronized dance. This dance has been hypothesized to play an important role in the establishment and maintenance of a long-term pair-bond relationship (Vincent, 1995; Sogabe and Yanagisawa, 2007).

My education is jam-packed with such trivial information, but this one in particular kinda got me thinking. Similar to fishes, monogamy is also extremely rare among mammals. Humans, as we all know, are also mammals and it is interesting to believe that perhaps we, too, may be capable of enveloping this type of relationship much to the demise of the promiscuity of today’s society.

From a non-mammal to mammal concomitance; from fish biology to human society… Monogamy and social behaviour in the Syngnathids may have implications with human behaviour, existing in a philosophical context through parallel evolution or through a distant plesiomorphic trait known as love and emotion.

Because they belong to the sole taxon whose members exhibit the single case of male pregnancy in the entire animal kingdom, this speculation is arguably a bizarre personification of sea horse life history. Be grateful … I’ll spare you the scientific mumbo jumbo behind this fact; you can thank me later. Perhaps the concept is simply a reflection of my background as a zoology ge…er…major … or perhaps I am simply out of my mind … but anyhow …

I watch another pass me by. Year after year I sit on my chair and ponder. I have always believed that true love is forever… that true love is unconditional. Yet, every time I meet someone I think I’ve fallen for, in due time things would never work out the way I picture in my mind, and I ultimately force myself to forget. So what exactly is true love? Contrary to my beliefs, it is clearly not a feeling I have already encountered… but one thing is for sure. With each and every new relationship I feel a little stronger, a little more passionate. I feel as though with every let down I am able to bounce back higher than ever before, and when I meet the one who truly deserves, my heart will shine upon her in its greatest luminescence.

In other words, if every morning I could …

Wake up and enjoy the scenic beauty of the coral reefs in your eyes

Feel the gentleness of a passing stream when you breathe against my neck

Sense the perfect aura of a goddess of the sea at the touch of your fingertips

And taste the sweet tenderness of passion in your lips,

Like a mermaid breathing new life into my being

As I float into the realm of your underwater paradise …

It would make a world of a difference for my future, for my life

Even if you cannot be there for me at this very moment,

With just the very existence of your spirit by my side

And the knowledge of the reciprocation of these very thoughts within your mind

I will have obtained the strength necessary to move forward each stage,

To take the gradual steps leading towards the one day …

Towards the onset we have destined for each other

In the meantime all I have to do is prove my worth

Concentrating on my career, my growth, my development…

I am determined … but most importantly …

I am happy …

If a Hippocampus male can spend years searching an entire ocean for its life-partner, how can I possibly give up now? We Homo sapiens are supposed to be a superior, more intelligent species yet it is a damn shame how often love is taken for granted in society. Personally I hate conformity… so I strive to make a difference.

When I find the one who is right for me, I daresay we will achieve the anthropogenic equivalent to the pair-bond of any seahorse couple, and thus will become inseparable … ‘til death do us part.

And so, whoever you are, wherever you are, I would like you to know that although it has been difficult … in light of it all … everything is beautiful.

From the depths of my heart,

Cal

Just when you thought the animal kingdom couldn’t get any more bizarre, evolution walks up and

Just when you thought the animal kingdom couldn’t get any more bizarre, evolution walks up and slaps you in the face once again. It’s always been a hot topic and as much as I hate to conform, reproductive biology arouses my interest just like the rest of y’all. Take the metatherian way of life for example, that is of marsupials like the kangaroo: an extraordinary gestational process in which extremely underdeveloped young are nursed to its juvenile stages in the protective covering of the mother’s pouch. As a result of millions of years of isolation, this form of viviparity (giving birth) independently evolved, parallel to eutherians (the higher placental mammals like you and I), as the most successful mechanism of parental care.

Though traditionally thought to exist only within the realm of mammals, giving birth to live young actually also occurs in many a clade of fishes including the Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes), the Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fishes), and Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes). If you’ve been keeping up to date with me, then by now it’s probably clicked in your head where I’m going with this. Remember when I said I would spare you all that scientific mumbo-jumbo? Well, hell… I lied. That’s right, the Family Syngnathidae is one of the Actinopterygians to evolve viviparous species… but here’s the catch (drumrolls): … MEN give birth.

Say what?!

Ya mang. In fact, male viviparity has originated just ONCE amongst the evolution of quite a diverse variety of reproductive mechanisms, making the seahorses and pipefishes one of THE strangest creatures on the planet. In spite of the difficulties in maintaining this type of life form, there are over 200 species of Syngnathid fishes that undergo male pregnancy. Though the morphologies differ from one to another, in all species of the family the embryo is incubated within the males in a specialized compartment called the brooding pouch.

What happens is the female transfers her eggs to the male’s pouch, located just above his gonopore. Sperm cells are then shed into the pouch lumen and internal fertilization is achieved. Polyspermy (when more than one sperm fertilizes the egg), one of the aforementioned difficulties associated with male viviparity is avoided by reducing sperm production almost to the point of shooting blanks: a typical seahorse male only produces about 150 sperm cells per nut – thats another world record for Mother Nature.

Then, a bunch of crazy physiological stuff happens in between and the male gives birth. I’ll spare you the details and I really really mean it this time!
…
And that’s this month’s nerdy moment ~ MORE TO COME!

This is the blog of a 25-year-old bookmark. I proudly boast my own Hallmark serial number, 95 HBM 80-1. You’ll probably want to read all about me and my Travelling Companion (the TC) .

Today’s travel notes

The TC got it into her head to drive an open-top Mustang down Highway 1, the coastal route from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Actually, it was the TC-once-removed who put this idea into the TC’s head. Reluctantly I have to report that the TC got a bit carried away with the whole experience and left me cooped up in her bag much of the time. I didn’t even have the chance to get cozy with the pony (that’s what we aficionados call a Mustang) although I had been eagerly anticipating that photo opportunity.

Still, the TC did give me an airing every now and then, so I can report some highlights of the trip.

My impressions? The drive to Los Angeles is just beautiful. LA is a dump. Drive on by.

Travel tip

If you can, spend a few days on the drive. There’s much to do and see.

Here’s another tip from a wise worm: Invest in a GPS. Don’t rely on your TC. If she’s anything like mine, you’ll get lost and end up seeing the, ahem, interesting parts of town. En route from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica, we encountered Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Sod Farm.

Recommended restaurant

Lucia Lodge Restaurant, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean at the southern edge of Big Sur.

Recommended accommodation

Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, 400 Cannery Row, Monterey. Even the TC, bless her cotton socks, deserves a touch of luxury every now and then. But be warned, it’s pricey.

The book I’m in

Moonlit Cage, by Linda Holeman. Highly recommended. This worm felt homesick when the TC finished reading The Linnet Bird, by the same author, so I’m glad to be ensconced in another of Linda’s works.

The photos

Me cozying up to an urn in the Santa Barbara courthouse. Yeah, Keats dude: Leaf-fringed legends, deities and mortals abound. In truth, beauty and all that, I feel that I have a certain unfading charm myself:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Here’s the Mustang backed by a fittingly scenic view:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

The TC keeps remarking with glee how the car took her up and over 100 miles per hour before she had time to glance at the speedometer. Hmm. This worm is sceptical of the “before she had time” part of that tale:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

It’s a 4 litre, 6 cylinder mean machine:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

We started in San Francisco. Here’s that serene city, as seen from the Sausalito ferry a few days before we left:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

We spent our first night in Monterey. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is well worth a visit. It’s housed in a converted sardine canning factory situated at the end of Cannery Row, of John Steinbeck fame:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Me with a seahorse in the aquarium:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

The jellyfish displays are awe-inspiring, dwarfing even the TC’s height:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Here are the jellyfish in motion:

Another sort of jellyfish:

And perhaps the most ethereal yet:

These beasties are seadragons, related to seahorses. These dudes have the art of synchronised swimming down to a T:

Wherever I go, Jonathan is there too. Here he is masquerading as a porpoise, but I spotted him. Is he the most inept spy ever? Double-oh-seagull:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

We stayed at the Monterey Plaza Hotel in the middle of Cannery Row. It’s luxury squared. Here’s the view of the sea at dusk, from our room:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Just a few steps down the Row, two homeless people set up for the night. John Steinbeck would probably recognise their experience of the Row more than ours:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

The scenery from Highway 1 is sometimes breathtaking. This video gives some idea of its beauty. The noise you can hear is the barking of group of elephant seals on the beach at the bottom of the cliff:

Further along the road, you can get up close and personal with more elephant seals.

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Santa Barbara is gorgeous. So impressed was this worm, that I plan to write a blog post dedicated to that city. Here’s a snap to whet your appetite:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Malibu is luxury with a road running through it. Can’t visit your neighbours, for fear of getting run over when you cross the road. Can’t get anywhere without a car. As we approached from the north the TC chirped, “I could live here!” Then Malibu went on and on and on and this worm is pretty sure she changed her mind. Not that the TC would admit such a thing, of course.

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Santa Monica was blowing up a storm when we arrived. Extreme weather. The TC had to duck the kamikaze palmtree fronds. At one stage she was walloped in the middle by a low-flying cardboard box, but seemed to take that in her stride. Even so, Santa Monica greeted us with glitz, glamour and fairy lights:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

Early next morning all was calm and clean again, the palm fronds magically back in their rightful places:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

After a bit of research to find “you know, that beach where you always see people in films rollerblading among the palm trees”, the TC decided on Venice Beach, LA:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

We found this skate hire shop:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

And the TC fulfilled her heart’s desire:

Driving a Mustang from San Francisco to LA

That’s all for today dudes.

Or ketchup, or cat soup…or whatever you like with your fries. This is another handful of older paintings.

This is the oldest…from probably about 6 or 7 years ago. The subject is a cool kid I know, named Jevon. He’s a lot older now, but, as you can see, this was when he was just growing some chompers. Below are the photo and crummy sketch from which I started. If I remember correctly, his mom said something like “You made him look like a monster!” Oh the blindness of a parent’s love…

The rest of these are from the beloved and infamous Studio 2304 days…or daze…both apply. I’m sure I’m getting these dates wrong, but we were there something like 2005 – 2008. I say ‘we’. It was actually Steve Herndon’s studio, but we both painted there many nights a week. And it was pretty common for other friends/artists to drop by as well. Anthony Mata, Brad Abrams and sometimes Laura Abrams all hung out and/or made art there. If you dropped by, chances are you would be handed a brush and be coerced into doing something creative.

The serious gorilla.

The three below were done for Jet, Ryder and Greyson, my friend Heather’s kiddos. Hopefully I’ll get them shipped to them in Colorado before they graduate high school.

And here is a painting I did for an ‘erotic’ art show. At the time, I was painting a LOT of nude females, so I decided to try to capture eroticism without nudity.

I promise to post some newer work soon!

The surfer’s dragged, then dips and dives

Flash floods crash and rip the tide

Weaving past the wash

Ove’ jutted jagged rocks

Carried forward through froth and moss

Taken fast, against the momentary tide

To brake, plunge, wash; then slide

He grasps for hallowed jetties

Seeks out their grained and gory side

Slips his hands through feted silken slime

As gapen mouthed pulled down

To splutter out in diamond droplet spray

And rue that he went out that day

Taken far beneath with every rasping breath

His water-choked lungs pull, rasp

Drawing into him his death

Stretching for the surface, his battered body dashes

But he crashes, brakes and thrashes

As he slithers through the reef

Then is thrust by callous guttering spray

And crashed from open waters deep

Dropped upon the pebbled shorelines shield

His broken body tragically concealed

By wave and glassy hillock, seahorses plume

The sea that once his friend did yet consume

He’s buried now in those drifts of subtle grainy sands

That lies betwixt those death-defying struggles and dry land

I’ve been missing painting and crafting as of late so I made an effort to start working on some art projects again. This is my newest friend, Shawn the Seahorse. It still feels a little weird showing my little paintings when I know so many seriously amazing artists (I did spend a long time in art school — for writing), but perhaps this blog is like my art therapy. I can showcase my fun stuff and not feel so bad about not being Joseph Cornell (he’s my favorite).

Knysna Seahorse The Sedgefield and Knysna lagoons are home to the rarest seahorse on earth, Hippocam

Knysna Seahorse

The Sedgefield and Knysna lagoons are home to the rarest seahorse on earth, Hippocampus capensis. The only known estuarine seahorse, capensis has the most limited distribution and is listed as the most threatened seahorse species in the world.

The story below, from the Independent OnLine, is quite heartbreaking – poor faithful little pregnant man.

A single father of two is having to come to terms with the fact that there will be no more romance in his life after he and his partner were separated earlier.

The gent in question, a Knysna seahorse, was removed from the Garden Route town’s lagoon earlier this year by a concerned member of the public who found him floating, exhausted and barely able to swim.

The seahorse was taken to a National Parks (SANParks) aquarium, where he recovered well and where, less than a month later, he gave birth to a brood of babies.

Male seahorses have incubation pouches and give birth.

Two of the seahorse’s brood flourished and are nearly fully grown – but, says Francois Joubert of Garden Route Aquariums, it’s likely the small steed will not have any more young.

That’s because seahorses mate for life, and the seahorse’s female partner was left behind in the lagoon.

“In this light, we ask that people not make too hasty a judgement if they come across creatures who appear to be struggling in the wild,” Joubert said.

“Our actions, although well intentioned, may have drastic negative implications in the long run. If any animal clearly is in trouble the appropriate authorities should be consulted before intervening.”

The Knysna seahorse, or Hippocampus capensis, is one of 30 species of seahorses found worldwide, Joubert said.

This seahorse is endemic to the Knysna region and can only be found from Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay throughout the Knysna lagoon and up to Swartvlei in Sedgefield.

the guest artist, whom we shall call “R“, strikes again, sparking conversation…

K: OMG. Does R have a job?!? And they have to stop being so good or I’m going to boycott…

A: There should be a rule that guest artists should not have cooler drawings than us! I am going to attempt a deep sea diver once all my redbull has worn off — I should not drink that stuff with my ADD medicine! Holy moly!!!!!!!

L: Seriously, how does he even do that.

L: I can’t believe how good R’s drawings are. I need to practice
