This was made from a single sheet of black paper about 50″ x 40″ and it was one of the most fun projects I did freshman year. It is a hybrid animal parade with a bat-fox, sandpiper-seahorses, a bull-squirrel and hermit-mice.

The lined seahorse varies drastically in both coloration and ornamentation.  Individuals can range from a yellowish color all the way down the spectrum to a nearly black color.  Some may have intricate ornamentation on their backs and their heads.  Additionally, they can change color slightly to match their surroundings.  As with all seahorses, males carry a pouch which they use to hold their young after breeding.  Breeding itself is complicated, it includes a drawn-out ritual of dancing and clicking between the male and female.  At the end of the courtship, females deposit their eggs into the male’s pouch where they are fertilized and held until ready to be released (about 2 weeks).

Lined seahorses vary in color, pattern and ornamentation

Seahorses as a whole are ineffective swimmers.  They only use three of their fins (two pectoral fins and one dorsal fin) to swim.  They beat these fins rapidly to provide propulsion, but it is not enough to keep them stationary in even the most gentle of currents.  It is because of this that they require something to hold on to.  For our local lined seahorses in the Chesapeake, that something is often eel grass, as well as other submerged aquatic vegetation.  These grasses are vital to the seahorses’ ability to hunt, breed and just plain survive.  Seahorses are ambush predators and so they need something to anchor themselves to while hunting.  As they hide, prehensile tails attached to the eel grass, they wait for prey to float by their snouts.

Unfortunately, eel grass is in trouble in the Chesapeake Bay.  Nutrient pollution from farms, sewage and other human activities often leads to large algal blooms, which grow near the surface of the water and block light that the grasses need to grow. Additionally, destructive fishing techniques like bottom trawling can rip up huge swaths of submerged aquatic vegetation, causing wide-spread loss of habitat.  Because they are so specialized in their habitat needs, lined seahorses have little hope of successfully hunting and breeding without the grasses.  These pressures are threatening seahorses worldwide. As a result of these and other conservation pressures, it is estimated that the world’s lined seahorse population has declined by at least 30 percent in the past 10 years. We must begin to take steps to preserve the local habitat, or we risk losing this very interesting and important Chesapeake Bay species.

What you can do to help:  Reduce waste runoff, which pollutes waters like the Chesapeake Bay.  

• Control insects using natural controls instead of pesticides. Americans directly apply 70 million pounds of pesticides to home lawns and gardens each year and, in so doing, kill birds and other wildlife and pollute our precious water resources.
• Dispose of motor oil and anti-freeze through a local service station or recycling center. A one-quart container of oil disposed of at the local landfill can contaminate up to 2 million gallons of drinking water and the water home of our seahorse friends.
• Don’t pour anything down storm drains because they lead to the bay, which connects to the ocean. Most sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants do not remove poisonous cleaners, and yard and car-wash chemicals make their way into local waterways, and, eventually, into our ocean, harming animals along the way. You wouldn’t want to swim in those chemicals, and neither do animals!

Unfortunately his know-it-all big brother has just been reading about them. “I think you’ll find that the female lays the eggs, then the eggs are placed in the male’s pouch. The eggs are basically the baby seahorses, so the mums are the mums and the dads are the dads. Anyway, who do you believe? A real-life book or a kids’ cartoon? I believe a real-life book over Octonauts any day.”

I feel for my youngest son, but this is his argument, not mine. “There’s no such thing as a real-life book. That’s not what they’re called. They’re called…erm…they’re called…”

The professor jumps in. “Well, real-life books is what I choose to call them. Sometimes I like to use different words for the same thing. Like, you are a human but I don’t just call you a human all the time do I? I say boy, or brother, or little menace, or Magoozer. Not just human, that would be boring. This is the point when big brother usually gets thumped, but all is not lost. A lightbulb moment and the red mist clears. Little brother has remembered. “They’re not called real-life books. They’re called non-friction!”

Knysna / Cape seahorse

When males give birth there’d be no morning sickness and not a single stretch mark in sight. That’s how a man does it. Must say, it is mighty smart of the female Knysna seahorse to plant all her eggs in the male’s kangaroo-like pouch for hatching during their mating session.

You go sea girls… you little underwater fillies… let him push out the youngsters; let him be swollen and uncomfortable; let him answer the multi-millionth time heard question, ‘So, how long have you got to go?’

Imagine if us human males had to do this. Man, we wouldn’t stop complaining. We’d be proper bitches. But the male seahorse takes it all in his stride. The gestation period lasts around 3 weeks after which the youngsters are ejected and left to fend for themselves. Go on then, off you go you little lot. Have a nice life now.

No parenting skills required. No trendy movie star names to come up with. No school to book years in advance. Ah, how some lives would be when males give birth.

Love Spreads – The Stone Roses (1994)
This English band broke through with their debut album, and this track, from their sophomore effort, marked their commercial peak on both sides of the Atlantic. But internal strife – and a protracted legal battle with their first label – led to them disbanding in 1996. Guitarist Chris Squire formed a band, The Seahorses (who released an album before breaking up in 1999), and also released a couple solo studio albums. Bassist Gary Mounfield (aka, Mani) joined the band Primal Scream, while front-man Ian Brown enjoyed the greatest solo success: He released six solo albums, five of which reached the UK Top 10. In late 2011, the Stone Roses reunited and announced their intention to return to the studio. They performed at several music festivals this past summer, but no word yet on when they’ll release their third studio album.

Many years have passed since that heady day, and goldfish have swum in, and out of our lives , some of them won at fairs by my talented and less cack-handed offspring but up until now, I have never kept fish in anything grander than a goldfish bowl. Imagine if you will a grown-up woman, a grown-up woman giddy with excitement on taking possession of her first ever aquarium. We are not talking any old fish tank here, oh no my friends, this is a seawater aquarium  – a tiny but perfect microcosm of the rich and diverse marine life that surrounds this island of Java. Complete with corals and shells and oh so many new, and beautiful varieties of tropical sea fish.

Indonesians love their fish and all over Jakarta there are shops and markets selling everything you need to set up your own mini ocean. There are even markets that trade all through the night for fish loving insomniacs so should I suddenly have a burning desire to go and buy some more Nemos for our tank at three in the morning, the world is now my lobster.

Irishman’s and my exotic fish come from a shop down the road in Pancoran. The fish and the tank were not expensive compared to what it would have cost us in the UK, but, and here’s the rub, this new aquarium and it’s occupants are high maintenance so we now have to pay a small fortune each month to get the water changed once a week, the tank cleaned, and all the other million and one things needed to keep Nemo and the seahorses happy.

Hidden Seahorse

Sea is the source of life. Everything started from the sea and we say that just because the first living organism is created there. According to this, we are aware of its immense importance to the existence of our planet. And, we are aware not only to the existence, but also to the importance of future development and progress. However, the sea is interesting for me from a different perspective. I watch it as the most magical space that brings together the most diverse wildlife. Sea is home to countless creatures different in size, color, power, strength, speed and much more. All we can do is to wonder at so much diversity in one place. I was especially fascinated by the sea horses just because the fact that the male delivers cubs and take care of them as the mother does at all other living beings. I like to read everything about them and I do explore a little. But, in my free time I like to relax with a good computer game. Certainly, you can guess again, it is related to seahorses. Hidden Seahorse is amazing hidden object game that will surprise you with its task and beautiful pictures. It means, the depths of the sea are hiding seahorses, try to find them all of them. Maybe you will find out that you love seahorses, as well!

Day 4: We drove down to Monterey and went to the Monterey Aquarium, then we stopped at the beach in Carmel that overlooks Pebble Beach.

To receive your egg you must first click on the mysterious orb which will then deliver your Seahorse egg to you.  Once it arrives you can rezz it out and it will give you the basic stats of your new seahorse.  The thing I love though is that you can actually birth the seahorse and see exactly what it looks like without actually activating it.  I’m a very visual person, so this is great for me.

It is possible to sell them in this form rather than an egg as it gives buyers a true idea of the colours of each part of the seahorse.  For them to become active you simply have to click on them again.

There have been some updates since I last mentioned Odyssey.  There is now a website and forum for breeders to access.  You will find the most recent User Manual on the website also.  There are lots of new coats, such as the Leopard above.

If I had a knack for beading or making jewelry, this little creature is a wonderful inspiration for a necklace! I just had to share this! This is a rainbow seahorse and it is endangered. I never saw one before either! He’s a beauty isn’t he? Enjoy!

I am not particularly talented when it comes to making things. I don’t cook well. I can draw a little and I write.  I am good with ideas though.  I am hoping some enterprising jewelry maker/crafting addict will make a necklace inspired by this little guy!  He could be silver with cz or aurora borealis and rainbow stones in it or something.  As stated in the caption, this rainbow seahorse is an endangered species. My son made a wonderful dinner for us all and I noticed that my grandson, although he’s only 2 months old has a GREAT right hook!  He takes that fist and bats at those toys on his busy gym like they are nothing! LOL!

All in all I realized how truly blessed I am today. I’d rather be right here right now than EVER be 21 again–guaranteed!  I feel more alive right now than I’ve felt in 5 years!  I also have a better outlook on life in general and on the future.  If you are down today, I hope you find some inspiration also!
