THis bra is pretty disappointing. I purchased it because it was the only affordable nursing bra I could find in my size, 32 G. The band size runs large, the cup size is definitely small. It is comfortable, but it doesn’t give my bust nearly enough support to feel good wearing it out of the house.

I have difficulty finding even non-nursing bras to fit and am generally limited to two or three brands. Bella Materna has been the only nursing bra I’ve found to fit me properly. This bra has less stretch in the band than other bras, but gives a great shape. I think it also runs a little small. In other brands a 32 is a bit loose on me at the smallest hook, but in this brand, it’s a little snug on the loosest hook. I also found that the size chart didn’t work for me, but the company was great at exchanging until I found my right size (I ordered directly from the company’s website). The chart said I should wear a 32D, but I’m actually a 32G, so there was a lot of exchanging before I got it right.

The lack of stretch makes it uncomfortable for lying down (though I did get used to it), but gives it great support, so it’s a bit of a compromise–hence the 4-star rather than 5-star rating. The life of the bra is also good. They’re lasting me about 1 year if I switch among two of them, which is really good for me.

I’d definitely recommend Bella Materna’s products if you’re a difficult-to-fit size. I also have tried the padded bra (runs even smaller in the band and is a little hard to nurse in) and the full-cup nursing gown (a little snug and a little hard to nurse in on the left side only), both of which look fabulous. I might have gone up a band-size in the gown if I were going to sleep in it, for comfort’s sake.

BOOK REVIEW: Photographer Andrew Zuckerman's BIRD and his brand soar (...and no, you don't have to like Audubon to appreciate BIRD)

Brilliant! is one way to describe Andrew Zuckerman’s photographs. Brand savvy! is another. His latest book Bird, published last month (Chronicle Books, ISBN 9780811870986) showcases 200 vividly colorful, intelligently captured studio portraits of 75 exotic bird species — some in mid-flight, others at rest — plumage you don’t have to be an ornithologist to appreciate. And wait… there’s more. Zuckerman also filmed his photoshoot and posted behind-the-scenes film footage of the plumage. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that near-rhyme.) Along with Zuckerman’s two earlier books, Creature (2008) and Wisdom (2007), Bird is the third in his series of “concept” books. All three are artfully designed 12″x12″square coffee table books shot on location in high key studio lighting against white seamless — a recipe that has become Zuckerman’s signature look, his brand. And his brand, like Bird, is soaring.

Still in his early thirties, Zuckerman is an award-winning commercial photographer, an art director, a filmmaker, and co-founder of Late Nights & Weekends (LNW), a creative agency and production company.

After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, one of Zuckerman’s first jobs was shooting what he called “still lifes of bags and shoes” for Vogue magazine. In a Q&A in Fstop magazine, Zuckerman explains that “the Vogue art directors were really specific. We had to have a perfectly white background,” he says. “And it had to be beautifully done.”

Still shooting on a perfectly white background, Zuckerman’s “look” is seamless, literally. In all three of his books, his subjects appear in near shadowless wraparound light shot against white seamless, with the end result appearing as if his subjects were amputated from their environments by an extraction performed with a precision Photoshop selection plugin. No need for background separations in post-production, here. Zuckerman gets it right in his camera. (Geeks take note: he shoots Hasselblad H2 with a Leaf Aptus 75S digital back and brings Broncolor Grafit portable studio lights on location.) He used the same lighting recipe when he shot animals, reptiles and other critters for Creature and wise people with smart quotes in Wisdom. Creature, now its its fourth printing, features 150 nuanced studio portraits of tigers, baby leopards, a giraffe, chimpanzees, parrots, bears, reptiles, fish and other photogenic creatures. Wisdom, published late last year, still is an international sensation. It was produced with the cooperation of Archibishop Desmond Tutu, who made the initial contact with the book’s subjects, international luminaries over the age of 65 with something to say. The fifty warts-and-all honest portraits include, for example, Dame Judi Dench, Desmond Tutu, Vanessa Redgrave, Ravi Shankar, Clint Eastwood, Andrew Wyeth, Frank Gehry, Edward Kennedy, Chuck Close, Robert Redford, Buzz Aldrin, Vaclav Havel, Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, Graham Nash, and many others.

Fascinating quotes from Zuckerman’s interviews with these iconic men and women are also published in the book and on an included dvd of film footage from these interviews. Zuckerman says that he premised the book on the belief that ”one of the greatest gifts one generation can pass to another is the wisdom it has gained from experience.” Now, with the publication and marketing of Bird, Zuckerman may have set his sights a bit lower than working towards world peace (as he does in Wisdom), but nonetheless he again has proven himself as to be both a talented and insightful artist, a gifted photographer, and a skillful brand manager.

In the same Vogue catalog in which Zuckerman's Chimp sells headphones, his Bald Eagle image hawks ties.

Zuckerman’s uniformly, uncluttered images and signature whitespace backgrounds grant seamless entry points into his varied projects, while giving Zuckerman the ability to combine images from among different projects to create and market his his own branded merchandise (which already includes his line of Creature Wall Calendars, Creature Floor Puzzles, Creature Notecards, etc. The formula also contributes to a stockpile (er… stock archive) of images that Zuckerman draws upon to produce commercials and ads for clients to sell their own products.

That is exactly what Zuckerman did when he used shot footage of chimps in a commercial he created to sell Puma shoes (See Ants,” “Butterflies,” “Chimps”) and when he let Vogue magazine use his chimp and other images from Creature and Bird to sell electronics, jewelry, purses, shoes, and even bars of soap, pencils (or were they cosmetics?), pet carriers, ties, and ice skates in Vogue’s online shopping guide. And circularly, Vogue’s online Holiday shopping guide webpage reciprocally promotes Zuckerman’s Bird book.

Very entrepreneurial. Very synergistic. Zuckerman-branded chimpanzees selling headphones for Vogue? Look, in a down market, you gotta do what you gotta do. Wonder what primatologist Jane Goodall, one of Zuckerman’s articulate portrait subjects in Wisdom, has to say about that.

It has been quite some time since I last posted and I’m glad to say the traffic through my small blog has kept up quite nicely. Now Don’t get to bent out of shape at me… I come barring excuses.

1. I quite my job to photograph- This excuse should explain itself. There are many pitfalls one can encounter in such an endeavor.
2. Personal reasons- The long and short of it, I’m now on the coast ( Wilmington, NC ) sleeping on the floor of a friends house. This has now been the situation for about a month.

So, I never thought that this would be easy. I never said I would do well at it… But I’m doing it and that is what matters most. Most people don’t get that far. So with that being said, “Sorry to have taken so long”. But in the midst of tragedy some good work has emerged and I’m in full swing, working on my portfolio.

So, in the next couple weeks I’ll so you my NEW, REAL studio and all of it’s gear, as well as updates on my portfolio shoots… but for now. Some new work. Enjoy.

As you can probably tell, I’m starting to find a style. This however is going to be a long process. Hope you liked it.

Euro Vest '09: 2 Inches a Day!

Although my sister is an excellent knitter, she’s got some other big projects taking up her time these days – like knitting for a baby on the way and taking care of two small children and doing translating work on the side. So she’s outsourced a knitting request to me, and I in turn get to call it a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law. He’s requested a sweater vest, a fine-gauge, classic men’s sweater vest. I found the perfect pattern in British designer Erica Knight’s book Men’s Knits: 20 New Classics. The pattern is called the “Plain Vest” and it is plain, except for some fun full-fashioned shaping details that I’m really looking forward to. It’s just what Maarten wants (I hope). It’s a very Euro looking vest and I’ve been having fun imagining my Dutch brother-in-law wearing it to work.

I broke my own rule about buying the best yarn you can afford and got some Knit Picks Palette – because this time of year that’s the best yarn I can afford. I hope it wears well. The color’s a rich earthy green, but light enough to show off those aforementioned full-fashioned details. It seems like a flexible and versatile color that for some reason resists being photographed accurately. I had to adjust the color levels, and it’s still not right.

I made just two modifications to the pattern so far: I converted it to knit in the round until the armpits by adding the number of stitches for the front and back together, then subtracting four stitches for the selvedge. Since it’s seamless I’m adding a two-stitch cable where the side seams would be to give it some structure. This cable is so discrete it’s almost not there at all, and I think it’s a fun subtle detail.

I calculated that I need to knit about 2 inches every day to get this done in time to mail it off to the Netherlands, with a few other little goodies for Christmas. So let’s see: 292 stitches/round, multiplied by 18 rounds/2 inches = 5,256 stitches per day!?! Can that possibly be right? Please excuse me. I’ve got to go knit a few thousand stitches.

Studio is Ready!

Well…almost! The working end is done and ready to go! We are still working on the “little” things. Last night we finished getting the backdrop anchored and we were ready to take some test shots!

We had used every vehicle to move things to the studio. Shawn was surprised when he realized that he didn’t have transportation to come to the studio, but he was determined to help. Not to be stopped, he searched the garage and dug out a mountain bike! I was shocked when driving down US 1 to see him riding along! But it turned out well as it also provided us the opportunity for another interesting test shot!
