Photoshop and Illustrator fun

This weekend I decided to devote some time to practicing various techniques in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Lately I’ve been interested in textile design and pattern repeats, so I thought I’d mess around for a couple of hours. Since I don’t want to bore you, I’ll only share one example.

I started out with this image of a pattern (locate it on the ‘nets here):

Cute, isn’t it? So if I had just used the above square to fill a larger surface, it would look like this:

See the lines/seams? Bad.

Here’s an example of the visible seams when I zoom in:

As you can see, the flowers are cut off in various places.

BUT, I followed this tutorial (combined with bits and pieces from a few others) used some filters, did a few clicks of the clone stamp and created a seamless repeat:

As you can see, there are no seams! Here’s an example of it zoomed in:

Then. Wait, there’s more! I pulled the completed repeat pattern into Illustrator, filled a star with the pattern (because why not), changed the scale and the angle of the pattern, put the star back in Photoshop with the original background behind it, and the seamless repeat behind that, then finally added some filters. Wow. Who’s bored?!

Appropriately titled, craziness.

It’s a real beaut, isn’t it? I think I should reward myself with some yogurt covered pretzels.

White Seamless in the Garage

Here’s a few pics of my white seamless set up in the garage and the results. I think they came out pretty good considering it was my first real attempt. I followed zack’s blog post about setting up the white seamless, and even though i only used 2 canon 430 exII’s, I didn’t really curse that much setting it up. Looking back on it, I should have bumped up the power on the 430’s from 1/8th to maybe 1/4 power since I had to do a little cleanup work to make the white REALLY white. It’s hard to tell in camera how white it really is if you don’t look at the histogram! (oops!). Anyway, I bought the white tile board for $11.00 a sheet at the Depot, and the doors were $30. All in all, it’s a pretty cheap setup and you can make some really neat pictures. I think the color really stands out and looks great against the white, however black and white would give you a nice timeless look which might be good for a more serious type of shot. This was just for fun so I did it in color! I’ve got a shoot with my brother and his pregnant wife tomorrow using this as one of their locations, so we’ll see how it goes. If anyone reading this has any tips with using photoshop to change the composition from vertical to horizontal and adding more white to the sides, let me know. I tried doing this, but it didn’t seem to work like I wanted to. I still have absolutely no clue how to use photoshop so I primarily use Apple’s Aperture program.

Hey everyone! We’ve just gotten back from a great holiday! T & I headed home to FL, where we got to spend time with family, friends, kitties, and all the restaurants we miss! While I was home, I got some great pics of my latest pattern! It is a top-down, seamless baby sweater. The neckline is the same in the front as in the back so moms don’t have to worry which side is which. The pattern is for sizes 0-6, 6-12, and12-24 months, and the wool I used is K1 Yarns Superwash Merino DK – machine washable wool!

Anyone else notice the lack of snow in Washington this Christmas? Here’s what I think ice looks like (It’s been so long, I hardly remember).

Start off by taking a picture of some ice cubes and sizing the picture down to 512×512 pixels in Photoshop.

Eww, mine turned out yellow. That’s ok though, I can open up the color balance screen and get rid of the yellow to add more blue.

There, you’re done! (Just kidding).

Add a plastic wrap filter to it, you lazy moron.

Use a healing brush on the definitive edges

Now tile your image in a 4×4 grid.

That looks terrible! You suck!

I kid, I kid…

To get rid of those ugly seams, you gotta use the healing brush tool.

Set the source point in the top left tile.

Drag the brush down the vertical seam.

Copy and paste the seam to the opposite side of the texture.

Merge all layers from the layers menu.

Copy and paste the top left texture in a 4×4 grid again

Repeat horizontally.

If you were able to comprehend that nonsense, you should end up with a seamless texture.

Tip: follow the red instructions, then the blue.

First public release of the Seaweed Plugin

In the past year I have been developing a JavaScript API called “Seaweed” (The seamless web editor – see http://seaweed-editor.com) for my masters project at the University of Waikato. The API allows people to directly edito content on a web page without switching to edit mode. (It is kinda of like the “contentEditable” attribute – but with more control and better browser support). Play with a demo at http://seaweed-editor.com/demo.

My research is to investigate various aspects of “seamless editing”. I decided to use WordPress to power this investigation by developing a plugin that allows WordPress users to edit their posts/pages/comments directly on their Blog – without the need to use the administrator! Try it now at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seaweed. NOTE: WordPress.com users may have to wait a while for WordPress.com to host the plugin.

Seamless editing is cool, it beats WYSIWYG editing and HTML source editing any day (of coarse there are situations where the old-school way of editing may be more beneficial). When users install this plugin, they must first sign up to my Experiment which gathers usage data. If you have WordPress and you can install plugins – please install mine and sign up now!

First post of the New Year

Hey Folks,

This is the first post of the new year but it is concluding the 365 project of last year. I was shooting a project in Arkansas called the Truly Lovely Project. The project is geared toward the ladies out there who get caught up in trying to meet the impossible standards of beauty that society sets. The project is meant to be an encouragement to them. I got lots of shots there but here are a few of my favorites.

New Photography Studio!

At long last I now have a photography studio! It’s just what I need to get started and can’t wait to schedule more photo sessions in there.

My basic plan is to use the space as-is for now and work on the details as time progresses. The space is fully functional and available for any type of photo shoot. I also plan to rent the space to other photographers and I am in the works on putting together hourly and monthly packages which can include the space by itself, or it can also include a light kit for those who may not have one available to them. If you are interested in using the space for your own photo shoots please contact me and we can work something out!

For now, any type of photo session with me is free, yes, free, no session fees!

I’ve done a couple photo sessions in there to date, so here are a couple photos of the studio and a couple images from those recent photo shoots!

BOOK REVIEW: Photographer Andrew Zuckerman's BIRD and brand soar

Andrew Zuckerman’s latest book Bird (Chronicle Books, ISBN 9780811870986) showcases 200 vividly colorful, intelligently captured studio portraits of 75 exotic bird species. Zuckerman also filmed his photoshoot and posted behind-the-scenes film footage of the plumage. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that near-rhyme.) Along with Zuckerman’s two earlier books, Creature (2008) and Wisdom (2007), Bird is the third in his series of similarly designed “concept” books — 12″x12″square coffee table friendy, one-word titled books, all shot on location in high key studio lighting against white seamless — a recipe that has become Zuckerman’s signature look, his brand. And his brand, like Bird, is soaring.

Still in his early thirties, Zuckerman knows and understands branding. He is co-founder of Late Nights & Weekends (LNW), a creative agency and production company, whose advertising clients include Gap, Puma, BMW, among other brands. His white seamless aesthetic grew out of shooting what he called “still lifes of bags and shoes” on a “perfectly white background” for Vogue magazine, one of his first photography jobs after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

He still shoots on a perfectly white background — a look that has become his brand. In all three of his photography books, Zuckerman’s subjects, both creatures and people, appear in near shadowless wraparound light shot against white seamless. The effect extracts all context, as if his subjects were amputated from their environments by an extraction performed with a precision Photoshop selection plugin. No need for background separations in post-production, here. Zuckerman gets it right in his camera. (Geeks take note: he shoots Hasselblad H2 with a Leaf Aptus 75S digital back and brings Broncolor Grafit portable studio lights on location.) He used the same lighting recipe when he shot animals, reptiles and other critters for Creature and wise people with smart quotes in Wisdom. Creature, now its its fourth printing, features 150 nuanced studio portraits of tigers, baby leopards, a giraffe, chimpanzees, parrots, bears, reptiles, fish and other photogenic creatures. Wisdom, published late last year, still is an international sensation. It was produced with the cooperation of Archibishop Desmond Tutu, who made the initial contact with the book’s subjects, international luminaries over the age of 65 with something to say. The fifty warts-and-all honest portraits include, for example, Dame Judi Dench, Desmond Tutu, Vanessa Redgrave, Ravi Shankar, Clint Eastwood, Andrew Wyeth, Frank Gehry, Edward Kennedy, Chuck Close, Robert Redford, Buzz Aldrin, Vaclav Havel, Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, Graham Nash, and many others.

Fascinating quotes from Zuckerman’s interviews with these iconic men and women are also published in the book and on an included dvd of film footage from these interviews. Zuckerman says that he premised the book on the belief that ”one of the greatest gifts one generation can pass to another is the wisdom it has gained from experience.” Now, with the publication and marketing of Bird, Zuckerman may have set his sights a bit lower than working towards world peace (as he does in Wisdom), but nonetheless he again has proven himself as to be both a talented and insightful artist, a gifted photographer, and a skillful brand manager.

In the same Vogue catalog in which Zuckerman's Chimp sells headphones, his Bald Eagle image hawks ties.

Zuckerman’s uniformly, uncluttered images and signature whitespace backgrounds grant seamless entry points into his varied projects, while giving Zuckerman the ability to combine images from among different projects to create and market his his own branded merchandise (which already includes his line of Creature Wall Calendars, Creature Floor Puzzles, Creature Notecards, etc. The formula also contributes to a stockpile (er… stock archive) of images that Zuckerman draws upon to produce commercials and ads for clients to sell their own products.

That is exactly what Zuckerman did when he used shot footage of chimps in a commercial he created to sell Puma shoes (See Ants,” “Butterflies,” “Chimps”) and when he let Vogue magazine use his chimp and other images from Creature and Bird to sell electronics, jewelry, purses, shoes, and even bars of soap, pencils (or were they cosmetics?), pet carriers, ties, and ice skates in Vogue’s online shopping guide. And circularly, Vogue’s online Holiday shopping guide webpage reciprocally promotes Zuckerman’s Bird book.

Very entrepreneurial. Very synergistic. Zuckerman-branded chimpanzees selling headphones for Vogue? Look, in a down market, you gotta do what you gotta do. Wonder what primatologist Jane Goodall, one of Zuckerman’s articulate portrait subjects in Wisdom, has to say about that.

Hardships

It has been quite some time since I last posted and I’m glad to say the traffic through my small blog has kept up quite nicely. Now Don’t get to bent out of shape at me… I come barring excuses.

1. I quite my job to photograph- This excuse should explain itself. There are many pitfalls one can encounter in such an endeavor.
2. Personal reasons- The long and short of it, I’m now on the coast ( Wilmington, NC ) sleeping on the floor of a friends house. This has now been the situation for about a month.

So, I never thought that this would be easy. I never said I would do well at it… But I’m doing it and that is what matters most. Most people don’t get that far. So with that being said, “Sorry to have taken so long”. But in the midst of tragedy some good work has emerged and I’m in full swing, working on my portfolio.

So, in the next couple weeks I’ll so you my NEW, REAL studio and all of it’s gear, as well as updates on my portfolio shoots… but for now. Some new work. Enjoy.

As you can probably tell, I’m starting to find a style. This however is going to be a long process. Hope you liked it.
